The original descriptions of nine monodontid and 21 delphinid nominal taxa were revisited, thereby revealing necessary addenda and corrigenda elucidating and solving earlier problems of cetacean nomenclature. This report provides further notes and is an addition to the 2021 work of Jefferson entitled Nomenclature of the Dolphins, Porpoises, and Small Whales: A Review and Guide to the Early Taxonomic Literature (NOAA Professional Paper NMFS 21). Abstract

Aquila Legionis volumes 24-25 (2021-2022) were a special issue publishing the Database of Military Inscriptions and Papyri of Early Roman Palestine, collecting 406 different inscriptions and papyri from or relating to Palestine in the period 63 BCE-130 CE. One of the more exciting things about the study of antiquity is discoveries that cast new light upon existing theories. There is a plan to annually collect relevant discoveries and any corrigenda in the latest issue of Aquila Legionis. This is the first such supplement to DMIPERP. There is a more concerted effort to adhere to the standards of the Leiden conventions henceforth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Table S1 in the Supplementary Material (Phenolic compounds identified in yarrow samples by using HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS) in the original paper [1] was updated after a revision of the chromatographic identification. The update adds additional information, which affects some of the previously reported MS/MS ions (m/z), as some of them were omitted (e.g., vicenin 2), contained typographical errors (e.g., apigenin, diosmetin), or included an inaccurate m/z or abundance of the detected ions (e.g., amentoflavone, apigenin-C-hexoside-C-pentoside, chlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, schaftoside, schaftoside isomer). In addition, the classification of vitexin was inappropriate and was updated (moved from flavonols to the flavones section), as was the accurate mass (m/z) of ferulic acid, which was reported with a typographical error. The authors state that the changes made only affect the results shown in Table S1 and enhance the information given therein, without affecting in any way the scientific conclusions of the published work. The authors would like to thank Franski et al. for their comments, which have allowed us to correct these minor issues in Table S1. Table S1 was updated on 4 July 2023.

Abstract

In the original publication [1], the information contained in Table 1 concerning the Sequence Type (ST) and host of some of the Xylella fastidiosa strains was not correct. Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex strains RH1 and LM10 belong to ST 7 instead of ST 6. Xylella fastidiosa subspecies multiplex Fillmore belongs to ST 81 instead of ST 6. Regarding to Xylella fastidiosa, subsp. multiplex ST 6 IVIA6586-2 was isolated from Helicrysum italicum, and IVIA6629 was isolated from Rhamnus alaternus instead of Prunus dulcis, as it is said in the original table. This mistake does not affect the results or information provided in the main body of the manuscript.

Abstract

The authors regret that the formula for calculation of the Growth Dominance Coefficient (GDC) of the original article (page 5) had a mistake, misleading if used for further studies. The correct expression of the GDC is the following: [Formula presented] where n is the number of trees in the stand, k represents the relative position (rank) of a tree in ascending order of tree volumes, whereas cvk and civk denote the cumulative proportion of trees ranked 1 to k in the total stand volume and in the total stand volume increment, respectively. This error only exists in the published article and does not affect the results and conclusions of the study. The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Abstract

Following publication of the original article [1], the authors reported that the last two sentences were mistakenly placed at the end of the Results section in the Abstract which should have been placed at the beginning of this section. The original Results section in the Abstract was: From the 20 differentially expressed miRNAs, 19 up-regulated in UF-EVs (bta-miR-134, bta-miR-151-3p, bta-miR-155, bta-miR-188, bta-miR-181b, bta-miR-181d, bta-miR-224, bta-miR-23b-3p, bta-miR-24-3p, bta-miR-27a-3p, bta-miR-29a, bta-miR-324, bta-miR-326, bta-miR-345-3p, bta-miR-410, bta-miR-652, bta-miR-677, bta-miR-873 and bta-miR-708) and one (bta-miR-148b) in OF-EVs. These miRNAs were predicted to modulate several pathways such as Wnt, Hippo, MAPK, and lipid metabolism and degradation. Differences in miRNAs found in OF-EVs from the early luteal phase and UF-EVs from mid-luteal phase may reflect different environments to meet the changing needs of the embryo. Additionally, miRNAs may be involved, particularly in the uterus, in the regulation of embryo lipid metabolism, immune system, and implantation. This study evaluated miRNA cargo in OF-EVs from the early luteal phase and UF-EVs from the mid-luteal phase, coinciding with embryo transit within oviduct and uterus in vivo, and its possible influence on LMGs and signaling pathways crucial for early embryo development. The UN recourse to “reissues for technical reasons” for translation corrections and the growing number of corrigenda to EU legal acts and their implications for translation quality assurance and legal certainty are further contextualized and discussed drawing on both corpus analysis and consultations with institutional informants.

Abstract

An expression of concern (EoC) alerts readers to new considerations or concerns about a paper, usually at the post-publication stage. Authors and readers are left in a state of uncertainty as they await a resolution. This uncertainty might create a state of stress or anxiety for some authors. The paper's findings may be either validated and confirmed, resolving the EoC, or the paper's validity or loss of integrity is confirmed, leading to an erratum or retraction. Academics wanting to cite a paper to which an EoC is associated might decide not to cite it. If an EoC is reversed, i.e., if the post-publication findings annul the initial concerns, then the authors and journal may suffer a “loss” of citations. Conversely, if concerns are confirmed post-publication, and the EoC develops into a retraction, then any citations that were rewarded while the paper was in a state of uncertainty were rewarded unfairly. In such a case, both author- and journal-based metrics should be adjusted. Using the Retraction Watch database until April 20, 2021, we assessed 20 cases of EoCs in the neuroscience literature to appreciate how EoCs have been processed. After excluding one author-issued EoC, from 19 editor-issued EoCs, 10 were resolved in an average of 220 days while nine remain unresolved. In this article, we suggest the need to make the processes associated with an EoC more visible and transparent to the academic community, allowing editors to make the correct decisions regarding its resolution.

The discussion on the results of Fig. 7 of the primary manuscript is completely valid also for the new results, but a slightly different discussion is given on the new results showed in Fig. S2. Nevertheless, the conclusions of the original manuscript are not affected at all.

Abstract

Background Selected molecular biomarkers were incorporated into the US cancer registry reporting for patients with brain tumors beginning in 2018. We investigated the completeness and validity of these variables and described the epidemiology of molecularly defined brain tumor types. Methods Brain tumor patients with histopathologically confirmed diagnosis in 2018 were identified within the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States and NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Incidence databases. The brain molecular markers (BMM) site-specific data item was assessed for coding completeness and validity. 1p/19q status, MGMT promoter methylation, WHO grade data items, and new ICD-O-3 codes were additionally evaluated. These data were used to profile the characteristics and age-adjusted incidence rates per 100 000 population of molecularly defined brain tumors with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results BMM completeness across the applicable tumor types was 75%-92% and demonstrated favorable coding validity. IDH-wildtype glioblastomas’ incidence rate was 1.74 (95% CI: 1.69-1.78), as compared to 0.14 for WHO grade 2 (95% CI: 0.12-0.15), 0.15 for grade 3 (95% CI: 0.14-0.16), and 0.07 for grade 4 (95% CI: 0.06-0.08) IDH-mutant astrocytomas. Irrespective of WHO grade, IDH mutation prevalence was highest in adolescent and young adult patients, and IDH-mutant astrocytomas were more frequently MGMT promoter methylated. Among pediatric-type tumors, the incidence rate was 0.06 for H3K27M-mutant diffuse midline gliomas (95% CI: 0.05-0.07), 0.03 for SHH-activated/TP53-wildtype medulloblastomas (95% CI: 0.02-0.03), and Conclusions Our findings illustrate the success of developing a dedicated, integrated diagnosis variable, which provides critical molecular information about brain tumors related to accurate diagnosis.

Abstract

Aims To evaluate the effect of ultrasound-targeted simvastatin-loaded microbubble destruction (UTMD SV ) for alleviation of the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) in rabbits through modulation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPARγ). Methods In vitro, OA chondrocytes were treated with ultrasound (US), US-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD), simvastatin (SV), and UTMD SV on alternate days for four weeks. Chondrocytes were also treated with PPARγ inhibitor, PPARγ inhibitor+ UTMD SV , and UTMD SV . The cholesterol efflux rate and triglyceride levels were measured using an assay kit and oil red O staining, respectively. In vivo, the OA rabbits were treated with a single intra-articular injection of UTMD, SV, and UTMD SV every seven days for four weeks. Cartilage histopathology was assessed by safranin-O staining and the Mankin score. Total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in rabbit knee synovial fluid were detected by enzyme-marker assay. Aggrecan, collagen II, and PPARγ expression levels were analyzed by Western blotting (WB). Results In vitro, UTMD SV significantly increased the cholesterol efflux rate and aggrecan, collagen II, and PPARγ levels in OA chondrocytes; these effects were blocked by the PPARγ inhibitor. In vivo, UTMD SV significantly increased aggrecan, collagen II, PPARγ, and HDL-C levels, while TC levels and Mankin scores were decreased compared with the UTMD, SV, OA, and control groups. Abstract

The largest stable photosystem II (PSII) supercomplex in land plants (C2S2M2) consists of a core complex dimer (C2), two strongly (S2) and two moderately (M2) bound light-harvesting protein (LHCB) trimers attached to C2 via monomeric antenna proteins LHCB4–6. Recently, we have shown that LHCB3 and LHCB6, presumably essential for land plants, are missing in Norway spruce (Picea abies), which results in a unique structure of its C2S2M2 supercomplex. Here, we performed structure–function characterization of PSII supercomplexes in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mutants lhcb3, lhcb6, and lhcb3 lhcb6 to examine the possibility of the formation of the “spruce-type” PSII supercomplex in angiosperms. Unlike in spruce, in Arabidopsis both LHCB3 and LHCB6 are necessary for stable binding of the M trimer to PSII core. The “spruce-type” PSII supercomplex was observed with low abundance only in the lhcb3 plants and its formation did not require the presence of LHCB4.3, the only LHCB4-type protein in spruce. Electron microscopy analysis of grana membranes revealed that the majority of PSII in lhcb6 and namely in lhcb3 lhcb6 mutants were arranged into C2S2 semi-crystalline arrays, some of which appeared to structurally restrict plastoquinone diffusion. Mutants without LHCB6 were characterized by fast induction of non-photochemical quenching and, on the contrary to the previous lhcb6 study, by only transient slowdown of electron transport between PSII and PSI. We hypothesize that these functional changes, associated with the arrangement of PSII into C2S2 arrays in thylakoids, may be important for the photoprotection of both PSI and PSII upon abrupt high-light exposure., Photosystem II supercomplexes in Arabidopsis lacking antenna proteins LHCB3 and LHCB6 differ from their spruce counterparts and form potentially photoprotective semi-crystalline arrays in thylakoids.

Abstract

The Lazarus effect is a rare condition that happens when someone seemingly dead shows signs of life. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) represents a target in the fatal neoplasm glioblastoma (GBM) that through a series of negative clinical trials has prompted a vocal subset of the neuro-oncology community to declare this target dead. However, an argument can be made that the core tenets of precision oncology were overlooked in the initial clinical enthusiasm over EGFR as a therapeutic target in GBM. Namely, the wrong drugs were tested on the wrong patients at the wrong time. Furthermore, new insights into the biology of EGFR in GBM vis-à-vis other EGFR-driven neoplasms, such as non-small cell lung cancer, and development of novel GBM-specific EGFR therapeutics resurrects this target for future studies. Here, we will examine the distinct EGFR biology in GBM, how it exacerbates the challenge of treating a CNS neoplasm, how these unique challenges have influenced past and present EGFR-targeted therapeutic design and clinical trials, and what adjustments are needed to therapeutically exploit EGFR in this devastating disease.

48. Palliative care and end-of-life care in adults with malignant brain tumors

Abstract

Background This systematic review provides updated insights, from the published literature in the past 5 years, based on the 2017 European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO) guidelines for palliative care in adults with malignant brain tumors. It provides an overview of palliative care options, including during the end-of-life phase for patients with malignant brain tumors. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted from 2016 to 2021 focusing on four main topics: (1) symptom management, (2) caregiver needs, (3) early palliative care, and (4) care in the end-of-life phase. An international panel of palliative care experts in neuro-oncology synthesized the literature and reported the most relevant updates. A total of 140 articles were included. Results New insights include that: Hippocampal avoidance and stereotactic radiosurgery results in a lower risk of neurocognitive decline in patients with brain metastases; levetiracetam is more efficacious in reducing seizures than valproic acid as first-line monotherapy antiseizure drug (ASD) in glioma patients; lacosamide and perampanel seem well-tolerated and efficacious add-on ASDs; and a comprehensive framework of palliative and supportive care for high-grade glioma patients and their caregivers was proposed. No pharmacological agents have been shown in randomized controlled trials to significantly improve fatigue or neurocognition. Conclusions Since the 2017 EANO palliative care guidelines, new insights have been reported regarding symptom management and end-of-life care, however, most recommendations remain unchanged. Early palliative care interventions are essential to define goals of care and minimize symptom burden in a timely fashion. Interventional studies that address pain, fatigue, and psychiatric symptoms as well as (the timing of) early palliative care are urgently needed.

Abstract

Activated coagulation factor XI (FXIa) contributes to the development and propagation of thrombosis but plays only a minor role in hemostasis; therefore, it is an attractive antithrombotic target.To evaluate the pharmacology of asundexian (BAY 2433334), a small molecule inhibitor targeting FXIa, in vitro and in various rabbit models.The effects of asundexian on FXIa activity, selectivity versus other proteases, plasma thrombin generation, and clotting assays were evaluated. Antithrombotic effects were determined in FeClAsundexian inhibited human FXIa with high potency and selectivity. It reduced FXIa activity, thrombin generation triggered by contact activation or low concentrations of tissue factor, and prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time in human, rabbit, and various other species, but not in rodents. In the FeClAsundexian is a potent oral FXIa inhibitor with antithrombotic efficacy in arterial and venous thrombosis models in prevention and intervention settings, without increasing bleeding.

Abstract

DNA nanotechnology offers a versatile toolbox for precise spatial and temporal manipulation of matter on the nanoscale. However, rendering DNA-based systems responsive to light has remained challenging. Herein, we describe the remote manipulation of native (non-photoresponsive) chiral plasmonic molecules (CPMs) using light. Our strategy is based on the use of a photoresponsive medium comprising a merocyanine-based photoacid. Upon exposure to visible light, the medium decreases its pH, inducing the formation of DNA triplex links, leading to a spatial reconfiguration of the CPMs. The process can be reversed simply by turning the light off and it can be repeated for multiple cycles. The degree of the overall chirality change in an ensemble of CPMs depends on the CPM fraction undergoing reconfiguration, which, remarkably, depends on and can be tuned by the intensity of incident light. Such a dynamic, remotely controlled system could aid in further advancing DNA-based devices and nanomaterials.
