Abstract

Intrusion Tolerant Systems (ITSs) are a necessary component for cyber-services/infrastructures. Additionally, as cyberattacks follow a multi-domain attack surface, a similar defensive approach should be applied, namely, the use of an evolving multi-disciplinary solution that combines ITS, cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI). With the increased popularity of AI solutions, due to Big Data use-case scenarios and decision support and automation scenarios, new opportunities to apply Machine Learning (ML) algorithms have emerged, namely ITS empowerment. Using ML algorithms, an ITS can augment its intrusion tolerance capability, by learning from previous attacks and from known vulnerabilities. As such, this work's contribution is twofold: (1) an ITS architecture (Skynet) based on the state-of-the-art and incorporates new components to increase its intrusion tolerance capability and its adaptability to new adversaries; (2) an improved Risk Manager design that leverages AI to improve ITSs by automatically assessing OS risks to intrusions, and advise with safer configurations. One of the reasons that intrusions are successful is due to bad configurations or slow adaptability to new threats. This can be caused by the dependency that systems have for human intervention. One of the characteristics in Skynet and HAL 9000 design is the removal of human intervention. Being fully automatized lowers the chance of successful intrusions caused by human error. Our experiments using Skynet, shows that HAL is able to choose 15% safer configurations than the state-of-the-art risk manager., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Since its first introduction in late 90s, the use of marketplaces has continued to grow, today virtually everything from physical assets to services can be purchased on digital marketplaces, real estate is not an exception. Some marketplaces allow acclaimed asset owners to advertise their products, to which the services gets commission/percentage from proceeds of sale/lease. Despite the success recorded in the use of the marketplaces, they are not without limitations which include identity and property fraud, impersonation and the use of centralised technology with trusted parties that are prone to single point of failures (SPOF). Being one of the most valuable assets, real estate has been a target for marketplace fraud as impersonators take pictures of properties they do not own, upload them on marketplace with promising prices that lures innocent or naive buyers. This paper addresses these issues by proposing a self sovereign identity (SSI) and smart contract based framework for identity verification and verified transaction management on secure digital marketplaces. First, the use of SSI technology enable methods for acquiring verified credential (VC) that are verifiable on a decentralised blockchain registry to identify both real estate owner(s) and real estate property. Second, the smart contracts are used to negotiate the secure transfer of real estate property deeds on the marketplace. 13. Integrated approach to improve numerical and geostatistical performance on a naturally fractured carbonate reservoir.

Abstract

The numerical simulation of carbonate reservoirs, while keeping the heterogeneous behavior in a reasonable development time, is a challenge. This study introduces a new method to improve simulation of complex carbonate reservoirs, balancing speed and accuracy by using multiple stochastic techniques and hierarchical upscaling. The methodology has five main steps: (1) develop the geological model, (2) hierarchical upscaling and numerical validation, (3) define the probabilistic workflow, (4) Discretized Latin Hypercube combined with geostatistical realizations, and (5) computational cost. The methodology is applied to a Brazilian pre-salt field. The time consumption for the numerical simulation and geomodelling of the proposed workflow was compared against conventional procedures. Notably, the hierarchical upscaling approach allowed the use of a reference model for the dynamic matching procedure. Innovative elements include implicit modeling of small-scale fractures within the matrix domain using analytical averaging techniques, the incorporation of pseudo-functions, and the direct integration of the discrete fracture network into the simulation grid. These advancements result in a remarkable reduction of 20% in simulation time and a 60% decrease in the time required to generate new geostatistical images. 21. Physical Activity in Mild Vascular Cognitive Impairment: Results of the AFIVASC Randomized Controlled Trial at 6 Months.

Abstract

Background: Vascular cognitive impairment is frequent, in mild (mVCI) or severe forms (vascular dementia). Objective: To do a randomized controlled-trial to evaluate the impact of physical activity on cognition (primary outcome), neurocognitive measures, quality of life, functional status, and physical function (secondary outcomes), in patients with mVCI. Methods: A hundred and four patients with mVCI (mean age 71.2 years; 53 women) were randomized for a six-month intervention of moderate physical activity (60-minute sessions, 3 times/week) (n = 53) or best-practice "usual care" (n = 51). Comprehensive evaluations of primary and secondary outcomes included an objective measure of physical activity through accelerometry at baseline and after intervention. Results: Mean session attendance was 58%. Adverse events were negligible. After 6 months, no significant primary outcome change was observed, either in the intervention or 'usual care' group. The intervention group improved significantly in some secondary outcomes in physical function - aerobic capacity (U = 403; p = 0.000) and agility (U = 453; p = 0.005) after 6 months. Regardless of randomization arm, a post-hoc analysis based on fulfilling at least 21.5 minutes/day of moderate or 10.7 minutes/day of vigorous physical activity (World Health Organization-WHO standards) revealed improvements. These were not only in motor capacity but also on the global measure of cognition, executive functions and memory. Conclusions: Physical activity was safe and beneficial regarding domains of physical function. No significant cognitive decline was registered over 6-months, regardless of intervention allocation. Larger samples, longer follow-ups and focus on intervention adherence are needed to fully analyze the impact of WHO recommendations for physical activity in mVCI populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines a "small moments" writing strategy to nurture reflection in undergraduate college students participating in a course-based service-learning activity. Using grounded theory methodology to analyze reflection journal entries, the authors identified themes that indicate that, by writing "small moments" reflection journal entries, undergraduate students demonstrate awareness that can build insight, identify discrepancies, increase awareness of community, solve problems, and build confidence. Writing "small moments" reflections allowed the constructivist nature of student learning in a service-learning setting to become visible and evident to both the students and the instructors.

Abstract

Approaching reflection from the perspective of a teachable skill set implies that research may inform how to help students reflect. Employing a framework of making connections often used in reading comprehension, this study aimed to characterize how making connections between the service-learning experience (SLE) and prior experiences in similar settings, personal life experiences, and knowledge gained in the world, helped students make better sense of their SLE. We also discovered that particular words and phrases--reflection markers--are useful in teaching students how to write reflections. The study concludes with practical suggestions for service-learning instructors to facilitate quality student reflections.

29. Service Learning: Building Commitment to Becoming Teachers

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an early field experience program for undergraduate university students called classroom tutors in this project (CTs). Purpose: This study aims to measure the effects on CTs after their participation in Willing Workers in Classrooms (WWC). A second aim was to begin to develop a model for service learning specific to the needs of a bilingual school and university. Setting: The study took place at two elementary schools with a formal agreement to implement a service-learning project at the schools involving a total of 400 elementary students. Study Sample: Study participants included 40 university students (CTs) and 20 classroom teachers. Teams were formed including the classroom teacher, two university undergraduate classroom tutors (CTs), and a university supervisor (authors). Intervention: Teams provided instruction in classrooms one morning each week from 7.45 to 11 am over a 13 week period. Immediately following the classroom experience, all CTs and the university supervisor met in the professional development room on the school site to discuss their experiences. Research Design: Descriptive; Qualitative. Data Collection and Analysis: Participants kept reflective journals throughout the study. Weekly entries were made electronically through a journal portal tool on Blackboard, a web-based course management system. Post data sources included CT self-assessment of their participation, Classroom Teacher evaluations of the CTs and the CTs feedback about the strengths and areas needing improvement in the service learning project. Other data sources included CT electronic portfolios and philosophy of education statements, supervisors' observations and fieldnotes of classroom activities involving CTs and elementary students, as well as some digital photos. Grounded theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1997) techniques were used to negotiate meaning and develop explanatory models. Findings: Working in teams increased collegial support and resulted in increased confidence of CTs to both share their classroom experiences and to engage for effectively with elementary students. Reflections focused on verbal and written discourse, improving CTs tutoring practices and elementary student learning. Elementary student verbal responses and written work were important evidence to CTs that their teaching was making a difference to student learning. In addition, evidence of students' trust in CTs became a very important motivational element in their expressed desires to pursue a teaching career. Conclusion: Due to this study, strategies have been developed to improve the service learning project for the next year of the project that can lead to a sustainable service learning approach to the early field experience course. These strategies include: (a) continuing CTs working in pairs in the classroom; (b) lengthening meeting time immediately after the experience to reflect, discuss, and collaborate; (c) holding regular meetings with the principal, teachers and university supervisor to discuss and modify the project in progress; and (d) encouraging parental involvement in the project.

Abstract

This article discusses why Boethius pays attention to indefinite terms and how he interprets them in his writings on Aristotle's logic. The author proposes five reasons to explain this issue: Firstly, Aristotle himself is concerned with indefinite terms in his logic. Secondly, indefinite terms are necessary to prove that each affirmation has its negation. Thirdly, they are necessary for the definition of obversion. Fourthly, they are essential to avoid ambiguity in the formula of negation of the categorical or simple proposition. Lastly, they are vital to extending Aristotelian logic and proving the logical rules of obversion and contraposition. The article suggests that these reasons are not Boethius's ideas, but part of a long tradition of commentary that attempts to consistently incorporate indefinite terms in Aristotelian logic.
