13. Afrofuturism as Critical Constructionist Design: Building Futures from the Past and Present

Abstract

Society's ability to collectively address global challenges will require efforts to include diverse voices, perspectives, and epistemologies. Building on critical design, which positions these challenges as requiring changes in our values and beliefs, we examine the nature and potential of a critical constructionist design framework within an Afrofuturist aesthetic. This framework invites Black youth to critically examine social, economic, and environmental systems by both connecting to personal and family histories as well as reflecting on local and lived experiences. We ground our discussion of this framework in an implementation where, in consultation with professional designers, artists, and scholars, five Black teen girls designed and produced a collection of critical artifacts. We invited participants to use their personal experiences in the present, as well as their family and cultural histories, to design futuristic artifacts that critique existing social inequities and environmental instability.

Abstract

Background: Grief in parents has been described as a very intense long-lasting experience, characterized by deep sadness, and social isolation, therefore, the recommendation of scientific societies in pediatrics is to provide bereavement care to parents and relatives of deceased children who have previously been cared for by health professionals. Objetive: A bereavement workshop for parents is proposed as an intervention strategy, providing accompaniment to the families of deceased patients who received pediatric palliative care (PPC). Methods: This is a descriptive, qualitative, and exploratory study. Two focal group sessions were performed in 2019 with 23 families who were formal caregivers of pediatric patients in the Programa de Cuidando de ti (Program "Taking Care of You"), Cali, Colombia. These sessions, guided by the pediatric palliative care group. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: 60 families received the personalized letter of condolences with invitation to the workshop, 23 families attended the workshop. From the gratitude activity, families made 49 thank you cards, the following categories were highlighted: Communication, Hope, compassion, acceptance, humanization, learning, gratitude, active listening, coping strategies, regards, faith and humanization. Conclusion: Strategies that favor adequate emotional management of the grieving process should be promoted. This study reflects the perceptions of parents attending a bereavement workshop. It highlights the gratitude, feelings and reflections of the family members during the health process and the death of the child while receiving accompaniment by a pediatric palliative care team. 24. Seismogenic characterization of Colombian Caribbean and its implication over regional tectonics

Abstract

The uncertainties on the calculation of routine seismic event localization at the convergence zone between the Caribbean Plate and Norandean Block are mainly caused by general procedures adopted by seismic agencies such as Red Sismológica Nacional de Colombia (RSNC) and United States Geological Service (USGS). Here we improve the characterization of seismogenic sources of the Colombian Caribbean by estimating and using local velocity models, performing robust regional moment tensor inversion and embodiment of additional geophysical inputs. The sources are spatially constrained as superficial (0-30 km), intermediate (30-70 km) and deep (>70 km). Most significant seismicity in the South American Plate is given by the North Romeral fault (especially along the eastern part of this system), Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (SNSM), northern Bucaramanga Nest and the Panama-Choco Arc. Furthermore, a seismic cluster indicating the interaction between the fault systems of Santa Marta-Bucaramanga (SMB) and Oca-El Pilar (OP) is proposed at its offshore intersection point. The effect of complex seismogenic geometry controlled by the convergence and interaction of three tectonic plates is investigated by means of the analysis of Wadati-Benioff zones through seismic profiles across the study area. For the northernmost part, the Moho’s expression changes due east, and it is described here as a shallowly dipping, ductile and incipient subduction not related to the Paleo-Caribbean Plate that is found southward and striking E-W. In the western part, the “Nazca - Norandean Block - Caribbean Plate” triple point interaction undergoes strong compressional movements as well as tectonic uplifting., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

B cells are known to contribute to the anti-tumor immune response, especially in immunogenic tumors such as melanoma, yet humoral immunity has not been characterized in these cancers to detail. Here we show comprehensive phenotyping in samples of circulating and tumor-resident B cells as well as serum antibodies in melanoma patients. Memory B cells are enriched in tumors compared to blood in paired samples and feature distinct antibody repertoires, linked to specific isotypes. Tumor-associated B cells undergo clonal expansion, class switch recombination, somatic hypermutation and receptor revision. Compared with blood, tumor-associated B cells produce antibodies with proportionally higher levels of unproductive sequences and distinct complementarity determining region 3 properties. The observed features are signs of affinity maturation and polyreactivity and suggest an active and aberrant autoimmune-like reaction in the tumor microenvironment. Consistent with this, tumor-derived antibodies are polyreactive and characterized by autoantigen recognition. Serum antibodies show reactivity to antigens attributed to autoimmune diseases and cancer, and their levels are higher in patients with active disease compared to post-resection state. Our findings thus reveal B cell lineage dysregulation with distinct antibody repertoire and specificity, alongside clonally-expanded tumor-infiltrating B cells with autoimmune-like features, shaping the humoral immune response in melanoma. B cells are playing an active role in shaping the tumour immune microenvironment and the anti-tumour immune response in melanomas. Abstract

Objective: Determine the association between intimate partner violence against Peruvian women and adequate regulation of the emotions and behaviors of children between 24 and 59 months old. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed secondary data obtained from the ENDES-2019. The dependent variable was the regulation of emotions and behaviors in 24 to 59-month-old children. The independent variable was partner violence (physical, sexual, verbal or psychological) against mothers at some point in their life. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated and adjusted with their 95% confidence interval (CI) to evaluate the association between intimate partner violence and adequate regulation of emotions and behaviors. Results: Data from 8,473, 15 to 49-year-old mothers and their children aged 24 to 59 months were analyzed. Intimate partner violence was reported by 57.1% of the women, and 31.6% of the children showed adequate regulation of emotions and behaviors. The probability of children of mothers who were victims of intimate partner violence adequately regulating their emotions and behaviors was low (aPR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.75–0.88), with an aPR = 0.82 (95% CI: 0.76–0.89) and an aPR = 0.84 (95% CI: 0.76–0.93) for those with mothers suffering psychological or physical violence, respectively, with no differences in children of mothers suffering sexual violence by their partner. Conclusions: Six out of 10 Peruvian women have suffered partner violence at some point in their life, and only three out of 10 children between 24 and 59 months old adequately regulate their emotions and behaviors. Abstract

This article explores material-led research as a posthumanist methodology for practitionerresearchers in the learning sciences to study their own making practices, methods, and outputs. Unlike other first-person methodologies, material-led research aims to challenge and decenter the practitioner's perspective through curious attention to the role of materials in their practice. Using the case of the first author's engagement in biomaking--where living materials mingle with other ones--we illustrate a method for following the materials by attending to material assemblages, noticing what materials do, and reading them longitudinally. We discuss how, by granting materials an active participation in making practices, we allow ourselves to appreciate how they disrupt, influence, and offer new possibilities for making and learning. 39. Eficiencia de la telemedicina en la mejora de los resultados postquirúrgicos

Abstract

La telemedicina en la atención quirúrgica, se ha utilizado para proporcionar cuidados y educación en todas las fases del proceso quirúrgico. Para los sanitarios, las tecnologías digitales pueden mejorar la comunicación y la transferencia de información entre los equipos médicos y la población. Para los pacientes, las tecnologías digitales pueden mejorar la educación sanitaria, la comunicación con los médicos y capacitarlos para que desempeñen un papel activo en su propio cuidado. Esta revisión sistemática, trata de analizar la bibliografía existente acerca de las diferentes herramientas de la telemedicina que predominan en la atención postquirúrgica entre los pacientes y los profesiones sanitarios. Y además, indicar empíricamente la influencia beneficiosa de este tipo de atención en los cuidados postquirúrgicos para los pacientes y para el personal sanitario proveedor de la salud. Los medios empleados más comunes para proporcionar atención después de las intervenciones quirúrgicas hallados fueron las aplicaciones para móviles, telemonitores y videollamadas. Los determinantes fundamentales y las condiciones facilitadoras que influyen en la intención de uso, la adopción y el uso real de los servicios, son principalmente aspectos de calidad de la atención sanitaria y de facilidad de uso a la hora de aplicarla. Los determinantes que influyen en la satisfacción de los dos grupos de usuarios incluyen factores técnicos, sanitarios, económicos, sociales y de seguridad. Los resultados clínicos favorables observados con la telemedicina, combinados con los beneficios que ofrece al sistema de atención médica y la alta satisfacción reportada de pacientes y proveedores, subrayan los beneficios de la telemedicina y oportunidades reales para su uso ampliado. Telemedicine in surgical care has been used to provide care and education in all phases of the surgical process. For healthcare professionals, digital technologies can improve communication and information transfer between medical teams and the population. For patients, digital technologies can improve health education, communication with physicians, and empower them to play an active role in their own care. This systematic review attempts to analyze the existing bibliography about the different telemedicine tools that predominate in post-surgical care among patients and the health professions. And also, empirically indicate the beneficial influence of this type of care in post-surgical care for patients and health care providers. The most common means used to provide care after surgical interventions found were mobile applications, telemonitors and video calls. The fundamental determinants and facilitating conditions that influence the intention to use, the adoption and the actual use of services are mainly aspects of quality of health care and ease of use when applying it. The determinants that influence the satisfaction of the two user groups include technical, health, economic, social and safety factors. The favorable clinical outcomes seen with telemedicine, combined with the benefits it offers to the healthcare system and the high reported patient and provider satisfaction, underscore the benefits of telemedicine and real opportunities for its expanded use. La telemedicina en l'atenció quirúrgica, s'ha utilitzat per proporcionar cures i educació en totes les fases de l'procés quirúrgic. Per als sanitaris, les tecnologies digitals poden millorar la comunicació i la transferència d'informació entre els equips mèdics i la població. Per als pacients, les tecnologies digitals poden millorar l'educació sanitària, la comunicació amb els metges i capacitar-los perquè tinguin un paper actiu en el seu propi compte. Aquesta revisió sistemàtica, tracta d'analitzar la bibliografia existent sobre les diferents eines de la telemedicina que predominen en l'atenció postquirúrgica entre els pacients i els professions sanitàries. I a més, indicar empíricament la influència beneficiosa d'aquest tipus d'atenció en les cures postquirúrgiques per als pacients i per al personal sanitari proveïdor de la salut. Els mitjans emprats més comuns per proporcionar atenció després de les intervencions quirúrgiques trobats van ser les aplicacions per a mòbils, telemonitores i videotrucades. Els determinants fonamentals i les condicions facilitadores que influeixen en la intenció d'ús, l'adopció i l'ús real dels serveis, són principalment aspectes de qualitat de l'atenció sanitària i de facilitat d'ús a l'hora d'aplicar-la. Els determinants que influeixen en la satisfacció dels dos grups d'usuaris inclouen factors tècnics, sanitaris, econòmics, socials i de seguretat. Els resultats clínics favorables observats amb la telemedicina, combinats amb els beneficis que ofereix a el sistema d'atenció mèdica i l'alta satisfacció reportada de pacients i proveïdors, subratllen els beneficis de la telemedicina i oportunitats reals per al seu ús ampliat.

Abstract

El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación consiste en el diseño y desarrollo de herramientas y mecanismos tecnológicos que permitan mejorar los procesos de aprendizaje mediante la utilización de tecnologías disruptivas. Para ello se utilizarán tecnologías como la realidad virtual o la realidad aumentada, para que el estudiante pueda llevar a cabo un aprendizaje mucho más atractivo e interactivo, ya que estas tecnologías brindan la oportunidad de poder vivirlo en primera persona. Se utilizarán técnicas de gamificación y se analizarán diferentes mecanismos para las detecciones de emociones mediante análisis de patrones en imágenes.

Abstract

Los modelos geológicos inicial (MGI) y de físicas de rocas (MFR) son herramientas importantes en los procesos de inversión geofísica (tomografías eléctricas) e interpretación de estas, cuando se usan con el objeto de lograr la caracterización estratigráfica e hidrogeológica de una zona de estudio. Los MGI y MFR se construyen a partir del procesamiento de información primaria y/o secundaria, generando una representación esquemática de la zona la cual aporta al entendimiento de las propiedades físicas de los materiales. Dichos modelos iniciales deben ser implementados para la interpretación de datos en geofísica somera, en el caso de las tomografías eléctricas las interpretaciones dependen en gran parte de la calidad de los datos de campo, el procesamiento y la cantidad de información geológica disponible. La implementación de MGI y MFR es una herramienta fundamental para disminuir la incertidumbre relacionada al problema de la no-unicidad en inversiones geoeléctricas. Para la construcción del MGI de la zona de estudio se tuvo en cuenta la cartografía geológica disponible y columnas estratigráficas, dicha información permitió realizar correlaciones estratigráficas y cortes geológicos. Mientras que para el MRF se utilizó información de resistividades aparentes de materiales de la zona de estudio y sus características granulométricas. Los cortes geológicos, las correlaciones estratigráficas y los rangos de resistividad esperados en los materiales de la zona de estudio son los parámetros más importantes en la interpretación de las tomografías eléctricas. Este trabajo analiza el caso del acuífero libre del Valle De Aburrá definido por AMVA y UdeA (2012), AMVA y UdeA (2013) de la zona suroccidental, donde se compone principalmente por depósitos no consolidados. Mediante la interpretación geofísica se encontró que los materiales que componen dichos depósitos en el sector presentan variaciones texturales y, por ende, su clasificación y su comportamiento hidrogeológico result, The initial geological (IGM) and rock physics (RPM) models are important tools in the processes of geophysical inversion (electrical resistivity tomography) and their interpretation, when they are used in order to achieve the stratigraphic and hydrogeological characterization of a zone of study. The IGMI and RPM are built from the processing of primary and / or secondary information, generating a schematic representation of the area which contributes to the understanding of the physical properties of the materials. These initial models must be implemented for the interpretation of data in shallow geophysics. In the case of electrical tomography, the interpretations depend largely on the quality of the field data, the processing and the amount of geological information available. The implementation of IGM and RPM is a fundamental tool to reduce the uncertainty related to the problem of non-uniqueness in geoelectric investments. For the construction of the IGM of the study area, the available geological cartography and stratigraphic columns were considered, this information allowed to perform stratigraphic correlations and geological profiles. While for the RPM, the information used was apparent resistivities of materials in the study area and their granulometric characteristics. Geological sections, stratigraphic correlations, and expected resistivity ranges in the materials in the study area are the most important parameters in the interpretation of electrical tomography. This study analyzes the case of the unconfined aquifer of Valle De Aburrá defined by AMVA and UdeA (2012), AMVA and UdeA (2013) of the southwestern zone, where it is mainly composed of unconsolidated deposits. Through geophysical interpretation it was found that the materials that composed these deposits in the study area have textural variations and, therefore, their classification and their hydrogeological behavior are heterogeneous.
