Abstract

This paper presents the building heating demand prediction model with occupancy profile and operational heating power level characteristics in short time horizon (a couple of days) using artificial neural network. In addition, novel pseudo dynamic transitional model is introduced, which consider time dependent attributes of operational power level characteristics and its effect in the overall model performance is outlined. Pseudo dynamic model is applied to a case study of French Institution building and compared its results with static and other pseudo dynamic neural network models. The results show the coefficients of correlation in static and pseudo dynamic neural network model of 0.82 and 0.89 (with energy consumption error of 0.02%) during the learning phase, and 0.61 and 0.85 during the prediction phase respectively. Further, orthogonal array design is applied to the pseudo dynamic model to check the schedule of occupancy profile and operational heating power level characteristics. The results show the new schedule and provide the robust design for pseudo dynamic model. Due to prediction in short time horizon, it finds application for Energy Services Company (ESCOs) to manage the heating load for dynamic control of heat production system.

Abstract

Ethanol steam reforming was performed in a catalytic membrane reactor (CMR) containing Pd-Ag membrane tubes selective to hydrogen and Pd-Rh/CeO2 catalyst. Experiments were performed at 923 K, 6-10 bar, and fuel flow rates of 50 to 200 µl/min using a mixture of ethanol and distilled water with steam to carbon ratio of 3. Moreover, dynamic experiments were carried out to observe the behavior of the CMR and obtain the time constant in case of desired pressure or fuel flow rate adjustment. A static model for the catalytic zone based on the experimental results was derived from the Arrhenius law as a function of fuel flow rate and operating pressure to simulate the production of H2 in the CMR. Based on the static model, pure hydrogen production rate was also simulated and a dynamic zonal model was proposed under ideal gas law assumptions to simulate the behavior of the CMR system regarding the production of pure hydrogen in isothermal conditions. This model resembled hydrogen flow rate adjustments needed to set the electric load of a fuel cell fed by the studied CMR system.

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$ ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

23. Energetic and exergetic analysis of a low- Temperature based district heating substation for low energy buildings

Abstract

District Heating (DH) technology contributes to the low GHG emissions energy system, facilitates a renewable energy usage, and increases the overall system efficiency, while providing the necessary heating services to the built environment. However, the existing DH technology may not be technically and economically effective to service buildings with low-energy demands. Here, low- Temperature based district heating (LTDH) provides a better match between supply and demand in terms of energy quality. This paper deals with the energy and exergy analyses of a LTDH substation supplying a secondary LTDH network as a subnet of the existing DH system. The substation is supplied with a mix of supply and return flows from the main DH network. An energy and exergy analysis was employed based on modelling and simulation to compare the performance of two proposed substation configurations to that of a conventional DH substation operating at low- Temperature. The study was performed for a year round outdoor temperatures scenario under steady-state conditions. The exergy destruction at the system components was identified and compared. The results of this analysis show that by using the low- Temperature flow from the DH return pipe, the final exergy efficiency of the overall system is increased. On the other hand, assuming an adiabatic system the energy performance stays the same. As compared with the conventional DH network, the integration of the proposed LTDH substation reduced the share of energy demand covered by the main DH supply by 20-25% and improved the overall exergy efficiency from 79% to 85-87% depending on the substation configuration. Abstract

In a context of increasing use of renewable sources, it is of importance to correctly evaluate the actual sustainability of their implementation. Emergy analysis is one of the possible methods useful for such an assessment. This work aims to demonstrate how the emergy approach can be used to assess the sustainability of wind energy resource in Europe. The Emergy Index of Sustainability (EIS) and the Emergy Yield Ratio (EYR) are used to analyze 90 stations of European regions for three types of wind turbines. To do so, the simplified Chou wind turbine model is used for different set of parameters as: nominal power and size of the wind turbines, and cut-in and cut-out wind speeds. Based on the calculation of the emergy indices, a mapping is proposed to identify the most appropriate locations for an implementation of wind turbines in European regions.The influence of the wind turbine type on the sustainability is also analyzed, in link with the local wind resource. Abstract

Planck is a scientific satellite that represents the next milestone in space-based research related to the cosmic microwave background, and in many other astrophysical fields. Planck was launched on 14 May of 2009 and is now operational. The uncertainty in the optical response of its detectors is a key factor allowing Planck to achieve its scientific objectives. More than a decade of analysis and measurements have gone into achieving the required performances. In this paper, we describe the main aspects of the Planck optics that are relevant to science, and the estimated in-flight performance, based on the knowledge available at the time of launch. We also briefly describe the impact of the major systematic effects of optical origin, and the concept of in-flight optical calibration. Detailed discussions of related areas are provided in accompanying papers.

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity ( ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

Abstract

District Heating (DH) technology is an efficient and cost-effective solution to provide heating services to the built environment. However, the existing DH technology may not be technically and economically effective to service buildings with low energy demands. Here, low-temperature based district heating (LTDH) can provide a better match between supply and demand in terms of energy quality and quantity. This paper deals with the energy and exergy analyses of a LTDH substation supplying a secondary LTDH network as a subnet of the existing DH system. In order to improve the temperature match, a mix of supply and return streams from the primary DH network are used to supply the substation. Based on modelling and simulation, an energy and exergy analysis is employed to compare the performance of two proposed substation configurations to that of a conventional DH substation operating at low temperatures. The results show that the proposed LTDH substation reduced the share of the yearly energy demand of the LTDH network that is covered by the primary DH supply flow by 20% to 25%; the rest being supplied by the primary DH return flow. Likewise, by using the flow from the main DH return pipe, the final exergy efficiency of the overall system increased by 5% on average. The exergy destruction occurring at the system components was also identified and compared: during high heat demand periods the substation heat exchanger is responsible for the largest share of exergy destruction, whereas for low heat demands, it is due to the pumping effort. Based on these results, the proposed system is seen as an effective approach to increase the quality and quantity match between the low-temperature network and the conventional supply. Abstract

This paper describes a CFD study of the steam-reforming process (SRP) of methanol in a short pseudo-contact time reactor of fixed bed type, in axi-symmetric conditions. The SRP is important sake for hydrogen production, and the design /scale-up/control of the industrial processes in the future are supported by a reliable knowledge and prediction of the catalytic reaction. The difficulty of determining the reaction scheme and the associated constants is wellknown, due to the necessity of identifying the reaction kinetics in purely chemical regime, meaning with a perfect homogeneity and flow independence. Practically these ideal conditions, albeit assumed, are not fulfilled so that the intrinsic chemical kinetics is not reached. For the case of SRP, we have attempted here to validate the Peppley's model by a numerical modelling reproducing exactly the local conditions in the experimental duct, accounting for gradients in the cross section. The numerical results show the same trends than the experimental one, but with a slight shift of 20% as a consequence of the reactor heterogeneity. This result seems acceptable to validate the use of the Peepley's model for further studies in other types of complex flow reactors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
