Assessing the behaviour and physical attributes of domesticated dogs is critical for predicting the suitability of animals for companionship or specific roles such as hunting, military or service. Common methods of behavioural assessment can be time consuming, labour-intensive, and subject to bias, making large-scale and rapid implementation challenging. Objective, practical and time effective behaviour measures may be facilitated by remote and automated devices such as accelerometers. This study, therefore, aimed to validate the ActiGraph® accelerometer as a tool for behavioural classification. This study used a machine learning method that identified nine dog behaviours with an overall accuracy of 74% (range for each behaviour was 54 to 93%). In addition, overall body dynamic acceleration was found to be correlated with the amount of time spent exhibiting active behaviours (barking, locomotion, scratching, sniffing, and standing; R2 = 0.91, p < 0.001). Machine learning was an effective method to build a model to classify behaviours such as barking, defecating, drinking, eating, locomotion, resting-asleep, resting-alert, sniffing, and standing with high overall accuracy whilst maintaining a large behavioural repertoire. This study examined the suckling behaviour of triplet-rearing ewes for three days post-parturition. Twenty-six ewes were enrolled with 11 being observed for the entire 3-days post-lambing. The behaviour of the ewe, number of lambs present at the end of the event and the behaviour that terminated the event were recorded for each suckling event. The mean suckling event duration increased when additional lambs were present at the end of the suckling event. Ewes that had observations across all three days showed no change in the number of suckling events over time, but suckling events tended to be shorter on day 3 than on days 1 or 2. On day 1 more suckling events were terminated by the ewe walking away from her lambs than on days 2 and 3. The odds of a ewe walking away to terminate the suckling event were greater when three lambs were present compared with two. Ewes showed more inactive behaviours when more lambs were present at the end of the suckling event. The results partially supported the hypothesis that the ewe would be more likely to terminate a suckling event when three lambs were attempting to suck compared with one or two lambs. With decreasing wool values, interest is increasing regarding shedding sheep. To investigate this, two long-term studies introducing Wiltshire genes into Romney flocks were initiated. Data from these two studies provide phenotypic relationships between a range of shedding scores at different ages. The data included shedding scores (on a 0–5 scale) repeated on lambs (∼5 months), hoggets (∼14–18 months) and two-tooths (∼27 months), and lamb fleece weights. Positive relationships between shedding scores on the same animals were observed. Lamb fleece weight was negatively correlated with all shedding scores. Lamb shedding score in February had a correlation of 0.54 (P < 0.001) with the February score as a hogget at Riverside farm. Scoring wool shedding is a laborious activity requiring individual animals to be scored in the shearing position. Therefore, lamb fleece weight was investigated for its relationship with shedding scores, as a potentially easier alternative. Lamb fleece weight had a greater correlation with February hogget shedding score than with the lamb shedding score (−0.76 vs −0.52, P < 0.001). This study indicated that February scores are an accurate predictor of future shedding phenotypes, and when used in conjunction with fleece weight, are a good predictor of phenotypes expressed at later ages. Removal of ewes from a flock before the end of their productive life, sometimes described as ewe wastage, can potentially lead to reduced flock productivity. While the main reasons for culling ewes are largely known, their relative importance to New Zealand farmers and farmers' rational behind their culling decisions are not. Therefore, this study involved semi-structured interviews with 38 sheep farmers from throughout New Zealand to explore their ewe culling decisions. Farmers consistently culled mixed-age and two-tooth ewes who failed to become pregnant or who had a vaginal prolapse. For other culling reasons, farmers' use of them and their rationale for doing so was diverse and varied between farmers based on ewe age-group, severity, season, perceived economic consequences and farmers' personal preference. Surprisingly little is known about how the home environment influences the behaviour of pet cats. This study aimed to determine how factors in the home environment (e.g., with or without outdoor access, urban vs. rural, presence of a child) and the season influences the daily behaviour of cats. Using accelerometer data and a validated machine learning model, behaviours including being active, eating, grooming, littering, lying, scratching, sitting, and standing were quantified for 28 pet cats. Generalized estimating equation models were used to determine the effects of different environmental conditions. Increasing cat age was negatively correlated with time spent active (p < 0.05). Cats with outdoor access (n = 18) were less active in winter than in summer (p < 0.05), but no differences were observed between seasons for indoor-only (n = 10) cats. Cats living in rural areas (n = 7) spent more time eating than cats in urban areas (n = 21; p < 0.05). Cats living in single-cat households (n = 12) spent more time lying but less time sitting than cats living in multi-cat households (n = 16; p < 0.05). Cats in households with at least one child (n = 20) spent more time standing in winter (p < 0.05), and more time lying but less time sitting in summer compared to cats in households with no children (n = 8; p < 0.05). Degenerative joint disease (DJD) has a 90% prevalence in older cats and adversely affects quality of life1 . Long-term administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is usually required but can have adverse effects² . Nutraceuticals have been shown to relieve joint pain in cats without such side effects; however, due to differences in dose rates and formulations there is no consensus as to their efficacy. Most studies have utilized subjective insensitive measures such as veterinary or owner-assessed changes in activity. Accelerometers can provide objective data on cat activity and can identify specific behaviors³ .Triaxial accelerometers (ActiGraph, Pensacola, FL) were fitted to the collars of 16 cats (aged 11 to 16 yr; Massey University, Palmerston North, NZ) for 20 wk to assess their activity and behavior. The cats were fed the same diet (Chef: Kraft Heinz Wattie’s Ltd., Hastings, NZ) for 4 wk to collect baseline acceleration data, before being divided into two groups balanced for physical activity. After 4 wk, a blood sample were taken from all of the cats to establish their baseline levels of a range of inflammatory markers (e.g., IL-6, TNFα, INF- γ, SDF-1). The test group (n = 8) then received a joint supplement added to the baseline diet while the control group (n = 8) were fed the diet unsupplemented for 16 wk. The commercial joint supplement contained glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, and green-lipped mussel (Tandem, Wellington, NZ), at daily doses shown previously to be effective in cats4,5,6. The aim of the work was to assess the efficacy of the joint supplement in maintaining or promoting activity and specific behaviors in the cats. At the end of the period of supplementation a second blood sample was taken and assessed for the same range of inflammatory markers. Overall physical activity was not different between groups at baseline but was greater over the study in the test group compared with the control (P < 0.03). Grooming, as identified by the algorithm, showed a tendency (P = 0.051) to be greater in the test group than the control. These results suggest that the supplement had a positive effect on both overall activity and more specifically on grooming behavior in old cats. However, no differences in the range of inflammatory markers were seen before or after supplementation. The current study investigated the effects of growing ewe lambs to a heavier live weight at breeding on their subsequent reproductive performance and live weight at two and three years of age, and the growth of their progeny to weaning. Two groups of ewe lambs were bred at seven months of age at an average pre-breeding live weight of either 47.9 ± 0.36 kg (Heavy; n = 135) or 44.9 ± 0.49 kg (Control; n = 135). Breeding performance, fertility, litter size, lambing percentage, ewe wither height, live weight, progeny survival, and live weight were recorded at two and three years of age. None of the variables measured differed between the Heavy and Control ewes at either two or three years of age (P > 0.10). This suggests that farmers can breed their Romney-type ewe lambs at an average live weight of 48 kg without any negative impacts on reproductive performance at two or three years of age nor on their progeny's live weight or growth to weaning. Although breeding heavier ewe lambs improved reproductive performance during their first year, further investigations are needed to assess their overall lamb production and efficiency over multiple breeding seasons. Ewe lamb live weight at first mating (7 months of age) is positively associated with reproductive performance and led to the recommendation of a minimum mating live weight of 40 kg. This experiment examined the effects of heavier mating live weight of ewe lambs on their live weight, fertility, lambing percentage and their progeny performance to weaning. Ewe lambs (n = 270) were randomly allocated to one of two treatments. The Heavy group (n = 135) was preferentially fed until mating, achieving 47.9 ± 0.36 kg, while the Control group (n = 135) had an average mating live weight of 44.9 ± 0.49 kg. Fertility, lambing percentage, ewe live weights, the survival and live weights of their progeny were recorded. There was a 28% increase in fertility and a 59% increase in lambing percentage in the Heavy group compared to the Control group. Progeny survival and live weights did not differ (P >.05) by treatment. A curvilinear relationship between fertility and ewe live weight at mating was identified, suggesting that ewe lambs should be mated at a live weight of 50–55 kg to maximise fertility and lambing percentage without reducing ewe live weight nor the progeny performance. The use of alternative herbage types such as herb-clover mixes and lucerne can improve the weaning weight of twin and triplet lambs born to mature ewes and single lambs born to ewe hoggets. The aim of this study was to compare the live weights of twin bearing ewe hoggets and their progeny grazed on either ad libitum permanent pasture (ryegrass white clover), lucerne or plantain-clover during lactation over two years. In both years of the study, twin bearing hoggets and their lambs grazed on lucerne or plantain-clover were heavier at weaning than those on pasture. Lambs grazed on lucerne had greater live weights at weaning than plantain-clover, however, among ewe hoggets differences were seen only in the first year of the study. In conclusion, both lucerne and the plantain-clover resulted in increased mean live weights of ewe hoggets and their lambs at weaning compared with those on pasture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This experiment investigated the feasibility of using herb-clover mixes to enable early weaning of lambs at ∼60 days of age. Over two years, twin lambs weighing more than 16 kg were allocated to three treatments: ryegrass pastures until 90 days-of-age, herb-clover mix until 90 days-of-age or weaned at ∼60 days of age onto herb-clover mix. In 2014, lambs offered the herb-clover mix, weaned at 60 or 90 days, were heavier at 90 days than lambs grazing on pasture with their dams. In 2015, lambs that weaned early onto the herb-clover mix were lighter at the same age as lambs that remained with their dam, but they still achieved a commercial weight. Ewes weaned early were heavier at weaning than ewes suckling lambs on ryegrass pasture in both years. Under some conditions, early weaning of lambs onto a herb-clover mix can be an effective alternative to conventional weaning on ryegrass pasture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
