A comprehensive study of the Russenes postglacial fjord-side fan delta and landslide complex has been undertaken in inner Balsfjord, Troms county, northern Norway. High-resolution bathymetric data, digital terrain models, aerial photography, ground penetrating radar profiling, radiocarbon dating and field mapping have been used to determine the geometry, structure, lithofacies and evolution of the Russenes fjord-side fan delta. A 1:10 000 scale Quaternary Geological Map of the Russenes fjord-side fan delta and associated deglacial landforms has been produced during this study. Previously unrecognised deglacial ice-contact landforms have been mapped above the Russenes fjord-side fan delta. These landforms provide new insights into the deglaciation history of Balsfjord because they indicate that there was a halt in the retreat of the Balsfjord glacier at Russenes. Radiocarbon dating of Balanus shells located within these deglacial ice-contact landforms provides a minimum age for the glacier standstill of 10 884 ± 96 cal. yr BP (1σ). Detailed field investigation of a distinctive rock-avalanche complex located immediately above the Russenes fjord-side fan delta suggests that it was deposited by multiple rock-avalanche events. The composition of the boulders in the lower section indicates that they have been sourced from outside the catchment area, transported on the Balsfjord glacier and subsequently, deposited along with the ice-contact landforms. The composition of the rock-avalanche boulders in the upper section of the rock-avalanche complex indicates another rock-avalanche event was triggered on the mountains located directly above the Russenes fjord-side fan delta. Investigation of the present-day morphology and structure of the fjord-side fan delta indicates there are two distinct depositional environments within the postglacial fan delta: (1) a subaerial alluvial fan; and (2) a subaqueous Gilbert-type delta. Within both environments sediment transport occurs during episodic high-energy flood events. The subaerial alluvial fan contains two perennial river channels that migrate over the fan via channel back-filling and avulsion processes. Additionally, the subaqueous component of the fan delta can be further divided into three depositional environments: (1) a flatly lying intertidal delta platform; (2) a steeply dipping subaqueous delta slope; and (3) a deep, subaqueous, gently dipping prodelta region. Investigation of the deltaic subsurface reveals the delta has a Gilbert-type tripartite structure composed of bottomset, foreset and topset units and the relationship between the subsurface structure and the present-day fan delta morphology has been discussed. The surficial morphology and subsurface structure of the postglacial fjord-side fan delta has been used to determine the progradational and aggradational history of the fan delta. Finally, the response of the Russenes fjord-side fan delta to variations in climate, sea level and sediment supply over the Holocene has been investigated.

Det norske fjord- og dallandskapet består høye fjell og bratte dalsider som er preget av skredaktivitet. Økende krav til framkommelighet langs vegnettet fører til at infrastrukturen er i stadig utvikling, og i mange tilfeller må vegbanen flyttes til mer skredsikre områder. Statens vegvesen er i gang med arbeidet for å flytte dagens Europaveg 6 gjennom Setså, Saltdal kommune, Nordland bort fra de skredutsatte fjellsidene langs fjorden til et mer skredsikkert terreng lengre inn i dalområdene. Målet med oppgaven har vært å utføre en geomorfologisk analyse av løsmassene i Setså-området basert på en digital høydemodell fra LiDAR-data for å få en dypere forståelse av dannelsen og utbredelsen av dalfyllsedimenter, samt kartlegge utbredelsen av jordskred og steinsprang i samme område, for å få en dypere forståelse av skredmekanikk og utløsende årsaker for skred. Sedimentologiske og geomorfologiske data ble innhentet under feltarbeid høsten 2016. Videre geomorfologisk analyse er utført ved hjelp av ortofoto og en digital høydemodell i ArcGIS. Analysene er sammenlignet, og har resultert i utarbeidelsen av et kvartærgeologisk kart for studieområdet. Det er kartlagt tre brerandavsetninger i studieområdet. Disse er sammenlignet med tidligere studier og brerekonstruksjoner som er utført i området, og har ført til endringer i tolkningen av breens utbredelse i områdene rundt Saltdalsfjorden. I dalmunningen er det kartlagt tre terrassenivåer av ulik høyde. To av disse sammenfaller med lokale nivåer for marin grense og Tapes-transgresjonen, mens den siste består av en brerandavsetning dekket av marine sedimenter som har overflatehøyde mellom marin grense og Tapes-terrassene. Kartleggingen av skred viser at marmorbergartene som er utbredt i studieområdet er sensitive for mekanisk forvitring i form av frostsprengning. Jordskredene utløses hovedsakelig på grunn av økning i poretrykk ved utsettelse for store nedbørsmengder eller på grunn av undergraving fra elve- eller bekkeløp.

Norway is particularly susceptible to large rockslides due to its many fjords and steep mountains. One of the most dangerous hazards related to rock slope failures are tsunamis that can lead to large loss of life. Many rockslides are clustered east of the Storfjord and Lyngen fjord in Troms county, northern Norway, where several mapped unstable rock slopes occur within the zone of sporadic permafrost. Among these, the Nordnes rockslide has been classified as high-risk due to the severe consequences should catastrophic failure occur. In order to fully understand the kinematics and geometric configurations susceptible for sliding, it is imperative to obtain precise measurements of the stability of potential unstable rock slopes. Multi-temporal satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques involve comparing the phase information from multiple spaceborne SAR images, produced at different times, to detect millimeter to centimeter scale ground deformation patterns. However, the satellite radar is only capable of measuring displacement that has a component in the radar line-of-sight (LOS). By combining InSAR data acquired in both ascending and descending orbits, it is possible to extract more information about the true displacement vector, increasing the interpretability of the displacement patterns. In this thesis, multi-temporal InSAR methods are applied to an extensive time series of TerraSAR-X data collected in both ascending and descending geometries during the summer seasons in the period 2009-2012. The estimated deformation rates from the ascending and descending geometries are decomposed into 2D InSAR data consisting of deformation in the vertical and east/west directions, dip angle and total displacement. The computed 2D InSAR displacement data are validated with GPS data from the Nordnes rockslide. For the study area, the 2D InSAR are related to geomorphological- and structural elements in different slope processes; a rock glacier, solifluction tongues, a fast moving rockslide (Gamanjunni3) and the Nordnes rockslide. Findings suggest that 2D InSAR data give a more adequate and comprehensible presentation of displacement in slope processes, with increased sensitivity to displacement. Produced 2D InSAR data show numerous examples of correlation between geomorphological- and structural elements and pattern observed in the 2D InSAR data. This includes identifying elements like solifluction tongues, outer extents of and ridge formations on rock glaciers, back fractures, fractures separating blocks and lateral borders of rockslides. 2D InSAR data have the possibility to enlighten the inner dynamics of slope processes. E.g. make prediction about displacement patterns for blocks, to what extent they are fragmenting or moving as one body and to what extent the displacement pattern in a slope process are controlled by the slope gradient. Displacement patterns originating from rotation of fault blocks, caused by a listric detachment fault or toe-zone compression uplifting the front of the fault block (thrust duplex) have been observed. There are good indications that 2D InSAR data can contribute to classification of slides, revealing listric of planar fault geometry and to state the controlling factors of rockslides.

Sedimentologiske og stratigrafiske data er innsamlet fra et lakustrint deltakompleks på Tolokonka i NV-Russland. De innsamlede data fra et 4,2 km langt og 30 m høyt elvesnitt har bidratt til en bedre forståelse av glasiasjonshistorien og bredemte sjøer i NV-Russland gjennom weichsel. Basert på sedimentologiske og stratigrafiske data består faciesfordelingen av sandige facies, vekslinger av kryssjiktet sand, heterolittisks sand og en diamikton. Facies er fordelt innenfor enhetene: A,B,C,D1,D2, E, F og G. Enhetene danner grunnlaget for et utviklingsmiljø fra fluvialt til deltaisk som gradvis endres til et glasilakustrint basseng og til slutt et glasialt miljø. Stratigrafiske grenser har dannet grunnlaget for en miljøtolkning av Tolokonka gjennom weichsel. Ut fra tidligere arbeid er det postulert at en bredemt sjø ble demmet opp i Hvitehavsbassenget av Barents- og Karahavisdekket (ca 70-65 ka BP) i weichsel. Glasilakustrine sedimenter på Tolokonka er i denne oppgaven beskrevet og tolket til å være avsetninger fra denne postulerte bredemte Hvitehavsinnsjøen.
