Imaging water pathways in the human body provides an excellent way of measuring accurately the blood flow directed to different organs. This makes it a powerful diagnostic tool for a wide range of diseases that are related to perfusion and oxygenation. Although water PET has a long history, its true potential has not made it into regular clinical practice. The article highlights the potential of water PET in molecular imaging and suggests its prospective role in becoming an essential tool for the 21st century precision medicine in different domains ranging from preclinical to clinical research and practice. The recent technical advances in high-sensitivity PET imaging can play a key accelerating role in empowering this technique, though there are still several challenges to overcome.

Main body: This commentary of highlights has resulted in 21 different topics selected by each coauthoring Editorial Board member addressing a variety of aspects ranging from novel radiochemistry to first in man application of novel radiopharmaceuticals. Conclusion: Trends in radiochemistry and radiopharmacy are highlighted demonstrating the progress in the research field in various topics including new PET-labelling methods, FAPI-tracers and imaging, and radionuclide therapy being the scope of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry.

In het vorige artikel van het AVB-tweeluik (Bijenhouden 2021 (5): 4-5) keken we naar de verschijningsvormen van Amerikaans vuilbroed. Nu gaan we terug naar de praktijksituatie in Nederland. De laatste jaren kwam een onevenredig groot deel van de uitbraken in het noordoosten van Nederland voor. Hoe komt dit en is dit uniek? In opdracht van het ministerie van LNV maakten we een quickscan van de situatie in Nederland in de periode 1990 tot 2019. Een uitbraak van Amerikaans vuilbroed komt niet heel regelmatig voor. Gelukkig maar, want het is een ingrijpende gebeurtenis voor de getroffen bijenhouders. De bijenstand moet gesaneerd worden en het geeft toch een gevoel dat men ‘iets’ niet goed gedaan heeft. Het is zeker zo dat bijenhouders een rol spelen bij de verspreiding van de ziekteverwekker (Paenibacillus larvae), maar waarom een infectie tot een uitbraak met klinische verschijnselen leidt is niet geheel duidelijk. Er zijn jaren waarin er geen enkele uitbraak gemeld wordt en er zijn regio’s in Nederland waar nog nooit een uitbraak is gemeld. Tegelijkertijd zijn er plekken waar een uitbraak regelmatig voorkomt.

Iedereen weet wel van de bloemetjes en de bijtjes, maar wie weet nu eigenlijk van de bodem en de bijtjes? Een groot deel van de in Nederland voorkomende bijensoorten bouwt zijn nest in de bodem. Eén of twee weken in het jaar bestuiven ze bloemen en de rest van het jaar vertoeven ze in de bodem. Ook in de stad kun je ze aantreffen. In dit artikel vertel ik het verhaal van de grondnestelende bijen aan de hand van de extravagante pluimvoetbij.

In de laatste anderhalf jaar heeft vrijwel iedereen kennis gemaakt met de swab, het speciale wattenstaafje waarmee testmateriaal wordt afgenomen. Wij hebben onderzoek gedaan naar het gebruik van swabs, om hiermee ziekteverwekkers van de honingbij aan te tonen. De swab past niet in de monddelen van de bij, maar wel in de bijenkast. Deze bemonsteringsmethode is eenvoudig en niet-destructief.

Niet veel mensen komen in hun carrière als imker in aanraking met Amerikaans vuilbroed (AVB). Gelukkig maar; de status als meldingsplichtige ziekte maakt de afwikkeling van een uitbraak een netelige zaak, die de getroffenen niet in de kouwe kleren gaat zitten. In Nederland komt een uitbraak van AVB niet vaak voor, zeker als dit vergeleken wordt met bijvoorbeeld Duitsland, dat ongeveer tien keer zoveel uitbraken per bijenhouder heeft (persoonlijke communicatie Marc Schäfer, 2020). Maar door het ontbreken van een regelmatige screening en epidemiologische studies is het moeilijk te zeggen wat de status van AVB in Nederland is. Daar komt bij dat de aandacht begrijpelijkerwijs uitgaat naar klinische symptomen die we allen kennen van de basiscursus. Dit terwijl AVB meerdere verschijningsvormen heeft. In een tweetal artikelen zullen we het voorkomen en de verspreiding van Amerikaans vuilbroed in Nederland behandelen en stilstaan bij de twee verschijningsvormen die Nederland (liever kwijt dan) rijk is.

In het eerste deel van dit artikel (Bijenhouden 2021-1) stonden we stil bij de vraag hoe de wintersterfte-enquête wordt uitgevoerd en bij de basisgetallen van de bijenhouderij. In dit tweede deel gaan we verder met de COLOSS-vragen, die ook in internationaal verband gebruikt worden voor een vergelijking van resultaten tussen deelnemende landen. Voor COLOSS geldt dat responsen alleen gebruikt kunnen worden als op alle ‘verplichte’ COLOSS-vragen een antwoord is gegeven. We houden dan de gegevens van 1.857 respondenten over voor verdere analyse. We kunnen in dit verslag niet op alle vragen ingaan, maar pakken de belangrijkste zaken eruit.

Al 14 jaar op rij wordt jaarlijks de wintersterfte-enquête in opdracht van het ministerie van LNV gehouden, sinds 2018 uitgevoerd door Bijen@wur. Daarbij vragen we niet alleen naar de wintersterfte, maar ook naar mogelijke onderliggende factoren en informatie over de bijenhouderij. Zo krijgen we jaar op jaar een beeld van wat er speelt en kunnen we kijken naar trends.

Het Symposium Bijengezondheid gaat in 2020 niet fysiek door. Wel kun je de presentaties digitaal bekijken. Bram Cornelissen (van bijen@wur) vertelt over de kans dat de kleine bijenkastkever deze zomer naar Nederland komt en hoe je daar alert op kunt zijn.

This article presents managed honey bee colony loss rates over winter 2018/19 resulting from using the standardised COLOSS questionnaire in 35 countries (31 in Europe). In total, 28,629 beekeepers supplying valid loss data wintered 738,233 colonies, and reported 29,912 (4.1%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.0–4.1%) colonies with unsolvable queen problems, 79,146 (10.7%, 95% CI 10.5–10.9%) dead colonies after winter and 13,895 colonies (1.9%, 95% CI 1.8–2.0%) lost through natural disaster. This gave an overall colony winter loss rate of 16.7% (95% CI 16.4–16.9%), varying greatly between countries, from 5.8% to 32.0%. We modelled the risk of loss as a dead/empty colony or from unresolvable queen problems, and found that, overall, larger beekeeping operations with more than 150 colonies experienced significantly lower losses (p < 0.001), consistent with earlier studies. Additionally, beekeepers included in this survey who did not migrate their colonies at least once in 2018 had significantly lower losses than those migrating (p < 0.001). The percentage of new queens from 2018 in wintered colonies was also examined as a potential risk factor. The percentage of colonies going into winter with a new queen was estimated as 55.0% over all countries. Higher percentages of young queens corresponded to lower overall losses (excluding losses from natural disaster), but also lower losses from unresolvable queen problems, and lower losses from winter mortality (p < 0.001). Detailed results for each country and overall are given in a table, and a map shows relative risks of winter loss at regional level.

Spatial patterns formed through the process of self‐organization are found in nature across a variety of ecosystems. Pattern formation may reduce the costs of competition while maximizing the benefits of group living, and thus promote ecosystem persistence. This leads to the prediction that self‐organizing to obtain locally intermediate densities will be the optimal solution to balance costs and benefits. However, despite much evidence documenting pattern formation in natural ecosystems, there is limited empirical evidence of how these patterns both influence and are influenced by tradeoffs between costs and benefits. Using mussels as a model system, we coupled field observations in mussel‐culture plots with manipulative laboratory experiments to address the following hypotheses: 1) labyrinthine spatial patterns, characteristically found at intermediate to high patch densities, are the most persistent over time; this is because labyrinthine patterns 2) result in adequately heavy patches that can maximize resistance to dislodgement while 3) increasing water turbulence with spacing, which will maximize food delivery processes. In the field, we observed that labyrinthine ‘stripes’ patterns are indeed the most persistent over time, confirming our first hypothesis. Furthermore, with laboratory experiments, we found the ‘stripes’ pattern to be highly resistant to dislodgement, confirming the second hypothesis. Finally, with regards to the third hypothesis, we found positive effects of this pattern on local turbulence. These results suggest that the mechanisms of intraspecific facilitation not only depend on initial organism densities, but may also be influenced by spatial patterning. We hence recommend taking into account spatial patterns to maximize productivity and persistence in shellfish‐cultivation practices and to increase the restoration success of ecosystems with self‐organizing properties.

Climate change and biological invasions are two major global environmental challenges. Both may interact, e.g. via altered impact and distribution of invasive alien species. Even though invasive species play a key role for compromising the health of honey bees, the impact of climate change on the severity of such species is still unknown. The small hive beetle (SHB, Aethina tumida, Murray) is a parasite of honey bee colonies. It is endemic to sub‐Saharan Africa and has established populations on all continents except Antarctica. Since SHBs pupate in soil, pupation performance is governed foremost by two abiotic factors, soil temperature and moisture, which will be affected by climate change. Here, we investigated SHB invasion risk globally under current and future climate scenarios. We modelled survival and development time during pupation (=pupal performance) in response to soil temperature and soil moisture using published and novel experimental data. Presence data on SHB distribution were used for model validation. We then linked the model with global soil data in order to classify areas (resolution: 10 arcmin; i.e. 18.6 km at the equator) as unsuitable, marginal and suitable for SHB pupation performance. Under the current climate, the results show that many areas globally yet uninvaded are actually suitable, suggesting considerable SHB invasion risk. Future scenarios of global warming project a vehement increase in climatic suitability for SHB and corresponding potential for invasion, especially in the temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere, thereby creating demand for enhanced and adapted mitigation and management. Our analysis shows, for the first time, effects of global warming on a honey bee pest and will help areas at risk to prepare adequately. In conclusion, this is a clear case for global warming promoting biological invasion of a pest species with severe potential to harm important pollinator species globally.
