The segmentation of ultra-high resolution images poses challenges such as loss of spatial information or computational inefficiency. In this work, a novel approach that combines encoder-decoder architectures with domain decomposition strategies to address these challenges is proposed. Specifically, a domain decomposition-based U-Net (DDU-Net) architecture is introduced, which partitions input images into non-overlapping patches that can be processed independently on separate devices. A communication network is added to facilitate inter-patch information exchange to enhance the understanding of spatial context. Experimental validation is performed on a synthetic dataset that is designed to measure the effectiveness of the communication network. Then, the performance is tested on the DeepGlobe land cover classification dataset as a real-world benchmark data set. The results demonstrate that the approach, which includes inter-patch communication for images divided into $16\times16$ non-overlapping subimages, achieves a $2-3\,\%$ higher intersection over union (IoU) score compared to the same network without inter-patch communication. The performance of the network which includes communication is equivalent to that of a baseline U-Net trained on the full image, showing that our model provides an effective solution for segmenting ultra-high-resolution images while preserving spatial context. We measure the fluorescence spectrum of broadband emitters in an open optical microcavity with radius of curvature R = 17.7(3) um and finesse F ~= 1000. This geometry enables a combined measurement of emission spectra versus cavity length, which has several benefits over measurements at fixed wavelength or fixed cavity length alone. We demonstrate the role of the optical penetration depths on the cavity modes and provide practical working equations for its analysis. Furthermore, we show the ability to measure the coupling of cavity modes within a small scan range of the cavity length. By measuring these cavity emission spectra as a function of cavity length, we thus obtain a rich and complete picture of the optical microcavity., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) play a vital role in autonomous robotics. Robotic platforms are often resource-constrained, and this limitation motivates resource-efficient SLAM implementations. While sparse visual SLAM algorithms offer good accuracy for modest hardware requirements, even these more scalable sparse approaches face limitations when applied to large-scale and long-term scenarios. A contributing factor is that the point clouds resulting from SLAM are inefficient to use and contain significant redundancy. This paper proposes the use of subset selection algorithms to reduce the map produced by sparse visual SLAM algorithms. Information-theoretic techniques have been applied to simpler related problems before, but they do not scale if applied to the full visual SLAM problem. This paper proposes a number of novel information\hyp{}theoretic utility functions for map point selection and optimises these functions using greedy algorithms. The reduced maps are evaluated using practical data alongside an existing visual SLAM implementation (ORB-SLAM 2). Approximate selection techniques proposed in this paper achieve trajectory accuracy comparable to an offline baseline while being suitable for online use. These techniques enable the practical reduction of maps for visual SLAM with competitive trajectory accuracy. Results also demonstrate that SLAM front-end performance can significantly impact the performance of map point selection. This shows the importance of testing map point selection with a front-end implementation. To exploit this, this paper proposes an approach that includes a model of the front-end in the utility function when additional information is available. This approach outperforms alternatives on applicable datasets and highlights future research directions.

With nearly one million new cases diagnosed worldwide in 2020, head \& neck cancer is a deadly and common malignity. There are challenges to decision making and treatment of such cancer, due to lesions in multiple locations and outcome variability between patients. Therefore, automated segmentation and prognosis estimation approaches can help ensure each patient gets the most effective treatment. This paper presents a framework to perform these functions on arbitrary field of view (FoV) PET and CT registered scans, thus approaching tasks 1 and 2 of the HECKTOR 2022 challenge as team \texttt{VokCow}. The method consists of three stages: localization, segmentation and survival prediction. First, the scans with arbitrary FoV are cropped to the head and neck region and a u-shaped convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained to segment the region of interest. Then, using the obtained regions, another CNN is combined with a support vector machine classifier to obtain the semantic segmentation of the tumours, which results in an aggregated Dice score of 0.57 in task 1. Finally, survival prediction is approached with an ensemble of Weibull accelerated failure times model and deep learning methods. In addition to patient health record data, we explore whether processing graphs of image patches centred at the tumours via graph convolutions can improve the prognostic predictions. Retinal fundus images can be an invaluable diagnosis tool for screening epidemic diseases like hypertension or diabetes. And they become especially useful when the arterioles and venules they depict are clearly identified and annotated. However, manual annotation of these vessels is extremely time demanding and taxing, which calls for automatic segmentation. Although convolutional neural networks can achieve high overlap between predictions and expert annotations, they often fail to produce topologically correct predictions of tubular structures. This situation is exacerbated by the bifurcation versus crossing ambiguity which causes classification mistakes. This paper shows that including a topology preserving term in the loss function improves the continuity of the segmented vessels, although at the expense of artery-vein misclassification and overall lower overlap metrics. However, we show that by including an orientation score guided convolutional module, based on the anisotropic single sided cake wavelet, we reduce such misclassification and further increase the topology correctness of the results. We evaluate our model on public datasets with conveniently chosen metrics to assess both overlap and topology correctness, showing that our model is able to produce results on par with state-of-the-art from the point of view of overlap, while increasing topological accuracy., Comment: To be published in proceedings of SPIE Medical Imaging 2023 Image Processing

Conflict prediction is a vital component of path planning for autonomous vehicles. Prediction methods must be accurate for reliable navigation, but also computationally efficient to enable online path planning. Efficient prediction methods are especially crucial when testing large sets of candidate trajectories. We present a prediction method that has the same accuracy as existing methods, but up to an order of magnitude faster. This is achieved by rewriting the conflict prediction problem in terms of the first-passage time distribution using a dimension-reduction transform. First-passage time distributions are analytically derived for a subset of Gaussian processes describing vehicle motion. The proposed method is applicable to 2-D stochastic processes where the mean can be approximated by line segments, and the conflict boundary can be approximated by piece-wise straight lines. The proposed method was tested in simulation and compared to two probability flow methods, as well as a recent instantaneous conflict probability method. We live in a data-centric world where we are heading to generate close to 200 Zettabytes of data by the year 2025. Our data processing requirements have also increased as we push to build data processing frameworks that can process large volumes of data in a short duration, a few milli- and even micro-seconds. In the prevalent computer systems designs, data is stored passively in storage devices which is brought in for processing and then the results are written out. As the volume of data explodes this constant data movement has led to a "data movement wall" which hinders further process and optimizations in data processing systems designs. One promising alternative to this architecture is to push computation to the data (instead of the other way around), and design a computational-storage device or CSD. The idea of CSD is not new and can trace its root to the pioneering work done in the 1970s and 1990s. More recently, with the emergence of non-volatile memory (NVM) storage in the mainstream computing (e.g., NAND flash and Optane), the idea has again gained a lot of traction with multiple academic and commercial prototypes being available now. In this brief survey we present a systematic analysis of work done in the area of computation storage and present future directions.

The Big Data trend is putting strain on modern storage systems, which have to support high-performance I/O accesses for the large quantities of data. With the prevalent Von Neumann computing architecture, this data is constantly moved back and forth between the computing (i.e., CPU) and storage entities (DRAM, Non-Volatile Memory NVM storage). Hence, as the data volume grows, this constant data movement between the CPU and storage devices has emerged as a key performance bottleneck. To improve the situation, researchers have advocated to leverage computational storage devices (CSDs), which offer a programmable interface to run user-defined data processing operations close to the storage without excessive data movement, thus offering performance improvements. However, despite its potential, building CSD-aware applications remains a challenging task due to the lack of exploration and experimentation with the right API and abstraction. This is due to the limited accessibility to latest CSD/NVM devices, emerging device interfaces, and closed-source software internals of the devices. To remedy the situation, in this work we present an open-source CSD prototype over emerging NVMe Zoned Namespaces (ZNS) SSDs and an interface that can be used to explore application designs for CSD/NVM storage devices. In this paper we summarize the current state of the practice with CSD devices, make a case for designing a CSD prototype with the ZNS interface and eBPF (ZCSD), and present our initial findings. This paper provides a review of the job recommender system (JRS) literature published in the past decade (2011-2021). Compared to previous literature reviews, we put more emphasis on contributions that incorporate the temporal and reciprocal nature of job recommendations. Previous studies on JRS suggest that taking such views into account in the design of the JRS can lead to improved model performance. Also, it may lead to a more uniform distribution of candidates over a set of similar jobs. We also consider the literature from the perspective of algorithm fairness. Here we find that this is rarely discussed in the literature, and if it is discussed, many authors wrongly assume that removing the discriminatory feature would be sufficient. With respect to the type of models used in JRS, authors frequently label their method as `hybrid'. Unfortunately, they thereby obscure what these methods entail. Using existing recommender taxonomies, we split this large class of hybrids into subcategories that are easier to analyse. We further find that data availability, and in particular the availability of click data, has a large impact on the choice of method and validation. Last, although the generalizability of JRS across different datasets is infrequently considered, results suggest that error scores may vary across these datasets.

Given the vital importance of search engines to find digital information, there has been much scientific attention on how users interact with search engines, and how such behavior can be modeled. Many models on user - search engine interaction, which in the literature are known as click models, come in the form of Dynamic Bayesian Networks. Although many authors have used the resemblance between the different click models to derive estimation procedures for these models, in particular in the form of expectation maximization (EM), still this commonly requires considerable work, in particular when it comes to deriving the E-step. What we propose in this paper, is that this derivation is commonly unnecessary: many existing click models can in fact, under certain assumptions, be optimized as they were Input-Output Hidden Markov Models (IO-HMMs), for which the forward-backward equations immediately provide this E-step. To arrive at that conclusion, we will present the Generalized Cascade Model (GCM) and show how this model can be estimated using the IO-HMM EM framework, and provide two examples of how existing click models can be mapped to GCM. Our GCM approach to estimating click models has also been implemented in the gecasmo Python package.

Path planners based on basic rapidly-exploring random trees (RRTs) are quick and efficient, and thus favourable for real-time robot path planning, but are almost-surely suboptimal. In contrast, the optimal RRT (RRT*) converges to the optimal solution, but may be expensive in practice. Recent work has focused on accelerating the RRT*'s convergence rate. The most successful strategies are informed sampling, path optimisation, and a combination thereof. However, informed sampling and its combination with path optimisation have not been applied to the basic RRT. Moreover, while a number of path optimisers can be used to accelerate the convergence rate, a comparison of their effectiveness is lacking. This paper investigates the use of informed sampling and path optimisation to accelerate planners based on both the basic RRT and the RRT*, resulting in a family of algorithms known as optimised informed RRTs. We apply different path optimisers and compare their effectiveness. The goal is to ascertain if applying informed sampling and path optimisation can help the quick, though almost-surely suboptimal, path planners based on the basic RRT attain comparable or better performance than RRT*-based planners. For mobile robots to operate autonomously in general environments, perception is required in the form of a dense metric map. For this purpose, we present the stochastic triangular mesh (STM) mapping technique: a 2.5-D representation of the surface of the environment using a continuous mesh of triangular surface elements, where each surface element models the mean plane and roughness of the underlying surface. In contrast to existing mapping techniques, a STM map models the structure of the environment by ensuring a continuous model, while also being able to be incrementally updated with linear computational cost in the number of measurements. We reduce the effect of uncertainty in the robot pose (position and orientation) by using landmark-relative submaps. The uncertainty in the measurements and robot pose are accounted for by the use of Bayesian inference techniques during the map update. We demonstrate that a STM map can be used with sensors that generate point measurements, such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors and stereo cameras. We show that a STM map is a more accurate model than the only comparable online surface mapping technique$\unicode{x2014}$a standard elevation map$\unicode{x2014}$and we also provide qualitative results on practical datasets.

This paper thoroughly investigates a range of popular DE configurations to identify components responsible for the emergence of structural bias - recently identified tendency of the algorithm to prefer some regions of the search space for reasons directly unrelated to the objective function values. Such tendency was already studied in GA and PSO where a connection was established between the strength of structural bias and population sizes and potential weaknesses of these algorithms was highlighted. For DE, this study goes further and extends the range of aspects that can contribute to presence of structural bias by including algorithmic component which is usually overlooked - constraint handling technique. A wide range of DE configurations were subjected to the protocol for testing for bias. Results suggest that triggering mechanism for the bias in DE differs to the one previously found for GA and PSO - no clear dependency on population size exists. Setting of DE parameters is based on a separate study which on its own leads to interesting directions of new research. Quantum hardware continues to advance, yet finding new quantum algorithms - quantum software - remains a challenge, with classically trained computer programmers having little intuition of how computational tasks may be performed in the quantum realm. As such, the idea of developing automated tools for algorithm development is even more appealing for quantum computing than for classical. Here we develop a robust, multi-objective evolutionary search strategy to design quantum circuits 'from scratch', by combining and parameterizing a task-generic library of quantum circuit elements. When applied to 'ab initio' design of quantum circuits for the input/output mapping requirements of the quantum Fourier transform and Grover's search algorithm, it finds textbook circuit designs, along with alternative structures that achieve the same functionality. Exploiting its multi-objective nature, the discovery algorithm can trade off performance measures such as accuracy, circuit width or depth, gate count, or implementability - a crucial requirement for first-generation quantum processors and applications., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are population-based metaheuristics, originally inspired by aspects of natural evolution. Modern varieties incorporate a broad mixture of search mechanisms, and tend to blend inspiration from nature with pragmatic engineering concerns; however, all EAs essentially operate by maintaining a population of potential solutions and in some way artificially 'evolving' that population over time. Particularly well-known categories of EAs include genetic algorithms (GAs), Genetic Programming (GP), and Evolution Strategies (ES). EAs have proven very successful in practical applications, particularly those requiring solutions to combinatorial problems. EAs are highly flexible and can be configured to address any optimization task, without the requirements for reformulation and/or simplification that would be needed for other techniques. However, this flexibility goes hand in hand with a cost: the tailoring of an EA's configuration and parameters, so as to provide robust performance for a given class of tasks, is often a complex and time-consuming process. Hyper-parameters play a major role in the learning and inference process of latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). In order to begin the LDA latent variables learning process, these hyper-parameters values need to be pre-determined. We propose an extension for LDA that we call 'Latent Dirichlet allocation Gibbs Newton' (LDA-GN), which places non-informative priors over these hyper-parameters and uses Gibbs sampling to learn appropriate values for them. At the heart of LDA-GN is our proposed 'Gibbs-Newton' algorithm, which is a new technique for learning the parameters of multivariate Polya distributions. We report Gibbs-Newton performance results compared with two prominent existing approaches to the latter task: Minka's fixed-point iteration method and the Moments method. We then evaluate LDA-GN in two ways: (i) by comparing it with standard LDA in terms of the ability of the resulting topic models to generalize to unseen documents; (ii) by comparing it with standard LDA in its performance on a binary classification task.

We implement methods from computational homology to obtain a topological signal of singularity formation in a selection of geometries evolved numerically by Ricci flow. Our approach, based on persistent homology, produces precise, quantitative measures describing the behavior of an entire collection of data across a discrete sample of times. We analyze the topological signals of geometric criticality obtained numerically from the application of persistent homology to models manifesting singularities under Ricci flow. The results we obtain for these numerical models suggest that the topological signals distinguish global singularity formation (collapse to a round point) from local singularity formation (neckpinch). Challenging optimisation problems are abundant in all areas of science. Since the 1950s, scientists have developed ever-diversifying families of black box optimisation algorithms designed to address any optimisation problem, requiring only that quality of a candidate solution is calculated via a fitness function specific to the problem. For such algorithms to be successful, at least three properties are required: an effective informed sampling strategy, that guides generation of new candidates on the basis of fitnesses and locations of previously visited candidates; mechanisms to ensure efficiency, so that same candidates are not repeatedly visited; absence of structural bias, which, if present, would predispose the algorithm towards limiting its search to some regions of solution space. The first two of these properties have been extensively investigated, however the third is little understood. In this article we provide theoretical and empirical analyses that contribute to the understanding of structural bias. We prove a theorem concerning dynamics of population variance in the case of real-valued search spaces. This reveals how structural bias can manifest as non-uniform clustering of population over time. Theory predicts that structural bias is exacerbated with increasing population size and problem difficulty. These predictions reveal two previously unrecognised aspects of structural bias. Respectively, increasing population size, though ostensibly promoting diversity, will magnify any inherent structural bias, and effects of structural bias are more apparent when faced with difficult problems. Our theoretical result also suggests that two commonly used approaches to enhancing exploration, increasing population size and increasing disruptiveness of search operators, have quite distinct implications in terms of structural bias.

Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF) equations were recently expressed in terms of the edge lengths of a d-dimensional piecewise linear (PL) simplicial geometry, for d greater than or equal to 2. The structure of the simplicial Ricci flow (SRF) equations are dimensionally agnostic. These SRF equations were tested numerically and analytically in 3D for simple models and reproduced qualitatively the solution of continuum RF equations including a Type-1 neckpinch singularity. Here we examine a continuum limit of the SRF equations for 3D neck pinch geometries with an arbitrary radial profile. We examine a Type-1 neck pinch singularity in simplicial Ricci flow (SRF) for an axisymmetric piecewise flat 3-dimensional geometry with 3-sphere topology. SRF was recently introduced as an unstructured mesh formulation of Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF). It describes the RF of a piecewise-flat simplicial geometry. In this paper, we apply the SRF equations to a representative double-lobed axisymmetric piecewise flat geometry with mirror symmetry at the neck similar to the geometry studied by Angenent and Knopf (A-K). We choose a specific radial profile and compare the SRF equations with the corresponding finite-difference solution of the continuum A-K RF equations. The piecewise-flat 3-geometries considered here are built of isosceles-triangle-based frustum blocks. The axial symmetry of this model allows us to use frustum blocks instead of tetrahedra. The 2-sphere cross-sectional geometries in our model are regular icosahedra. We demonstrate that, under a suitably-pinched initial geometry, the SRF equations for this relatively low-resolution discrete geometry yield the canonical Type-1 neck pinch singularity found in the corresponding continuum solution. We adaptively remesh during the evolution to keep the circumcentric dual lattice well-centered. Without such remeshing, we cannot evolve the discrete geometry to neck pinch. New product development needs new engineering approaches. Knowledge is a key resource that impacts traditional, organisational, economic and innovative models. Through NICT (New Information and Communication Technologies), globalisation encourages the emergence of networks that overcome traditional organisation boundaries. International enterprises, European-Community Networks of Excellence or Clusters (competitiveness poles) indicate the need to define a new way of thinking. This new way moves towards an agile, continuous innovative use of knowledge. Based on an epistemic study of knowledge management best practices, four examples show the barriers that can be encountered today. This paper aims defining the key elements that enhance collaborative networks. The analysis of best practices from collaborative environments enables the design of high standard information systems and initiate knowledge ecosystems. A balance between formalism required to share knowledge and fuzziness of social networks triggers new initiatives. This ensures the validity of information exchange through virtual collaboration. It helps to maintain group coherence despite exceeding the natural maximum number of collaborators. Finally the main success or failure factors are highlights and commented to ease the transition from economic-driven to expertise-driven models is then facilitated.

We consider the subject of self--binding in static, spherically symmetric objects consisting of a charged fluid. We have shown previously that in the case of a perfect fluid, only the localized part of the mass contributes to gravitational self--binding of such objects and that in the limiting case of objects comprised purely of electromagnetic mass, there is no gravitational binding. Here, we extend this result to the more general case of an anisotropic fluid. Our inspection of the Oppenheimer--Volkov equation allows tracking of both gravitational and non-gravitational contributions to binding of spherically symmetric objects and shows that those with pure electromagnetic mass cannot exist., Comment: 11 pages, no figures

The research area of evolutionary multiobjective optimization (EMO) is reaching better understandings of the properties and capabilities of EMO algorithms, and accumulating much evidence of their worth in practical scenarios. An urgent emerging issue is that the favoured EMO algorithms scale poorly when problems have many (e.g. five or more) objectives. One of the chief reasons for this is believed to be that, in many-objective EMO search, populations are likely to be largely composed of nondominated solutions. In turn, this means that the commonly-used algorithms cannot distinguish between these for selective purposes. However, there are methods that can be used validly to rank points in a nondominated set, and may therefore usefully underpin selection in EMO search. Here we discuss and compare several such methods. The energy--momentum tensor in general relativity contains only localized contributions to the total energy--momentum. Here, we consider a static, spherically symmetric object consisting of a charged perfect fluid. For this object, the total gravitational mass contains a non--localizable contribution of electric coupling (ordinarily associated with electromagnetic mass). We derive an explicit expression for the total mass which implies that the non--localizable contribution of electric coupling is not bound together by gravity, thus ruling out existence of the objects with pure Lorentz electromagnetic mass in general relativity., Comment: 7 pages, no figures
