Abstract

As a contribution to the prediction of the evolutionary behavior of biocomposites in service conditions, this study focused on the simulation of the hydrothermal aging of short natural fiber reinforced composites made by extrusion/injection molding. We endeavored to model the reversible modifications of the behavior of PLA and PLA/flax composites when immersed in water at different temperatures (20, 35 and 50 {\textdegree}C). A numerical model accounting for the heterogeneous mechanisms involved during aging such as water diffusion and the resulting swelling and plasticizing of polymers was implemented. Simulated data proved to be in perfect accordance with experimental results as long as no irreversible mechanism was occurring. The deviations of the simulated data from experimental results were limited at 35{\textdegree}C but significant at 50{\textdegree}C. Finally, the influence of moisture on the local elastic modulus of flax fibers was inferred thanks to the Halpin-Kardos homogenization model.

Abstract

The use of biocomposites on a daily basis for industrial products brings to light the influence of environmental factors on the evolution of mechanical properties. This aging has a major influence in the lifetime of any product based on such materials. Among biobased composites, poly(lactic acid) reinforced with plant fibers are known to be sensitive to hydrothermal aging due to the intrinsic nature of their components. Although some papers studied the influence of temperature and water absorption on such materials, so far the difference between reversible and irreversible effects of aging has been hardly studied. This distinction is the purpose of this study. Poly(lactic acid) samples reinforced with various content of flax fibers (0%, 10%, and 30%) were immersed in water at different temperature (20, 35, and 50{\textdegree}C) up to 51 days. The physical and chemical phenomena responsible for the changes in the mechanical properties of biocomposites were evaluated. It was observed that these changes were mainly reversible. However, irreversible effects of aging turned out to increase drastically with the amount of fiber and the aging temperature. While hydrolysis drastically deteriorated PLA for longer aging times, the lifetime of biocomposites was significantly extended (+ 230% at 50{\textdegree}C from 0% to 10% in fiber content) by the presence of fibers which postponed the failure of PLA.

Abstract

One of the challenges in the widespread use of biocomposites for engineering applications is the influence of environmental conditions on their mechanical properties, particularly for a combination of aging factors such as temperature, moisture, and mechanical stresses. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to study the influence of coupled aging factors by focusing on a 100% bio-based and biodegradable composites made of flax/poly(lactic acid) with several fiber contents. The development of a specific testing setup enabled continuous in-situ measurements and allowed comparing the effects of combined aging factors to those of uncombined aging factors. It was confirmed that the aging temperature in wet conditions led to a loss of elastic properties, especially for higher fiber fractions. While creep tests in dry conditions resulted in little decrease of elastic properties, it was observed that mechanical loading of the materials combined with water immersion resulted in a strong synergistic effect on the loss of stiffness. Finally, the presence of fibers reduced environmental stress cracking mechanisms and increased the time to failure.

Abstract

The detection of inclusions in soft material is of great interest, especially in the medical field. Traditionally, a biopsy exam is performed after palpation, when necessary. In the present work, a potentially quantitative method, via monitored indentation, is used to mimic palpation. This method consists in investigating the relaxation and stress‐free relaxation responses to an indentation test performed on a silicone block with an inclusion. The aim of the study is to evaluate how a difference in position, size and adhesion of the inclusion can influence the response of the samples to monitored indentation. A finite element model is constructed to conduct comparative studies. The hyper‐viscoelastic parameters of the silicone have been identified experimentally. Results from the simulations showed that the indicators measured during monitored indentation, especially during the stress‐free relaxation phase, are sensitive to adhesive inclusions, while they provide little information regarding their non‐adhesive counterparts. Depths and sizes for which adhesive inclusions are more likely to be detected have been identified. These results are encouraging but are conducted on polymer material and a rigid inclusion; nevertheless, they suggest that the non‐destructive measure of the stress‐free relaxation response of a tissue may help practicians to quantitatively characterize the nature of a nodule. L’effet des hautes températures de l’incendie sur les caractéristiques mécaniques et thermiques du calcaire après refroidissement est évalué. Des mesures mécaniques dynamiques par analyse modale impulsionnelle et par propagation des ondes ultra-sons sont réalisées et comparées à des mesures mécaniques quasi-statiques de compression uni-axiale et de flexion trois points. Abstract

International audience; Current environmental concerns push towards more sustainable and local practices for biomass production. In this regard, agroforestry has been highlighted by researchers and policies as a highly efficient approach for carbon sequestration (between 1.5 and 4 t C/ha/year), and a sustainable alternative to deforestation with many agricultural benefits: deeper rooting of trees in soil, enhanced biomass productivity, crop fertilization... Agroforestry implies regular branch cuts that are processed into wood chips and mostly used as energy wood or soil mulching. New higher added-value chains could be considered such as reinforcements or specific molecules for bio-based materials and chemistry. Besides, since 90’s, Wood-Plastic Composites (WPCs) have experienced significant growth, particularly in building (decking & siding), and constitute the largest share of bio-based composites developed at an industrial scale. Nevertheless, the quality of WPCs and variability in their performance are major technological issues for their implementation in industrial applications. This could be related to the difficulty in tracing the various origin of wood fillers as well as the different processing steps, from wood drying and defibration process to composite manufacturing, that are not well controlled. Indeed, numerous interdependent parameters govern the final properties of WPCs, such as biochemical composition, presence of metallic and chemical contaminants (binders, wood treatment residues, varnishes, etc.), (micro)structure, thermal stability, mechanical properties of wood fillers, and the control of their milling/granulometry and further processing into composite materials. In this context, the development of quality-controlled agroforestry wood fillers in terms of granulometry (size and shape factor), chemical composition and physical (microstructure, mechanical) properties is therefore strategic for their implementation in wood-based products. This work investigates and evidences the influence of wood species (poplar, oak, walnut, chestnut)) and filler size and shape on the microstructure and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) / wood composites manufactured by extrusion/injection moulded. Moreover, wood from three recovery platforms in Brittany (mix of several species) was also investigated to evaluate the potential of existing agroforestry feedstocks.

Abstract

Dans un premier temps, la nature pétrographique et les propriétés physiques de deux terres à bâtir seront caractérisées (analyse granulométrique, densité spécifique, limite de liquidité et indice de plasticité). Les propriétés physiques de deux briques de terre crue (un adobe et une brique de terre compressée stabilisée à la chaux) fabriquées à partir de ces deux terres seront ensuite mesurées (masse volumique apparente, porosité, conductivité thermique, coefficient d’absorption d’eau, isotherme de sorption, comportement au feu).
