7. Counting Query Answers over a DL-Lite Knowledge Base (extended version)

Abstract

Counting answers to a query is an operation supported by virtually all database management systems. In this paper we focus on counting answers over a Knowledge Base (KB), which may be viewed as a database enriched with background knowledge about the domain under consideration. In particular, we place our work in the context of Ontology-Mediated Query Answering/Ontology-based Data Access (OMQA/OBDA), where the language used for the ontology is a member of the DL-Lite family and the data is a (usually virtual) set of assertions. We study the data complexity of query answering, for different members of the DL-Lite family that include number restrictions, and for variants of conjunctive queries with counting that differ with respect to their shape (connected, branching, rooted). We improve upon existing results by providing a PTIME and coNP lower bounds, and upper bounds in PTIME and LOGSPACE. For the latter case, we define a novel query rewriting technique into first-order logic with counting.

Abstract

International audience; Formal ontology provides axiomatizations of domain independent principles which, among other applications,can be used to identify modeling errors within a knowledge base. The Ontoclean methodology is probably the best-known illustration of this strategy, but its cost in terms of manual work is often considered dissuasive. This article investigates the applicability of such debugging strategies to Description Logics knowledge bases, showing that even a partial and shallow analysis rapidly performed with a top-level ontology can reveal the presence of violations of common sense, and that the bottleneck, if there is one, may instead reside in the resolution of the resulting inconsistency or incoherence.

Abstract

International audience; The problem investigated is the identification within an input knowledge base of axioms which should be preferably discarded (or amended) in order to restore consistency, coherence, or get rid of undesired consequences. Most existing strategies for this task in Description Logics rely on conflicts, either computing all minimal conflicts beforehand, or generating conflicts on demand, using diagnosis. The article studies how prioritized base revision can be effectively applied in the former case. The first main contribution is the observation that for each axiom appearing in a minimal conflict, two bases can be obtained for a negligible cost, representing what part of the input knowledge must be preserved if this axiom is discarded or retained respectively, and which may serve as a basis to obtain a semantically motivated preference relation over these axioms. The second main contributions is an algorithm which, assuming this preference relation is known, selects some of the maximal consistent/coherent subsets of the input knowledge base accordingly, without the need to compute all of of them.

Abstract

Volcanic eruptions are a widespread force of geological and ecological disturbance and present recurrent opportunities for the study of biological responses to novel habitat formation. However, scientific study of such events is difficult given their short duration and often distant location. Here we report results from opportunistic sampling of unique volcano-generated habitats formed during the 2011 explosive eruption in the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle complex (Chile), when massive amounts of pumice were ejected, creating novel floating substrata that have never before been characterized from a microbiological perspective. DNA sequencing revealed a dynamic community of microbes that came to inhabit the pumice, with a unique composition distinct from that of the lakes’ surface waters and with suggestions of ecological convergence across lakes and sampling times. Furthermore, biogeochemical studies of net nutrient fluxes showed that, while the fresh pumice arriving to the lakes was an initial source of phosphorus (P), colonized pumice had high rates of nitrogen (N) and P uptake and was sufficiently abundant to represent a significant lake-wide nutrient sink. These findings highlight the remarkable versatility of microbes in exploiting novel environments and are consistent with a recent proposal of floating pumice as a favorable environment for the initial origins of life on early Earth.

Abstract

A data base for the comparison of advanced energy conversion systems for utility applications using coal or coal-derived fuels was developed. Estimates of power plant performance (efficiency), capital cost, cost of electricity, natural resource requirements, and environmental intrusion characteristics were made for ten advanced conversion systems. Emphasis was on the energy conversion system in the context of a base loaded utility power plant. All power plant concepts were premised on meeting emission standard requirements. A steam power plant (3500 psig, 1000 F) with a conventional coal-burning furnace-boiler was analyzed as a basis for comparison. Combined cycle gas/steam turbine system results indicated competitive efficiency and a lower cost of electricity compared to the reference steam plant. The Open-Cycle MHD system results indicated the potential for significantly higher efficiency than the reference steam plant but with a higher cost of electricity.

Abstract

The desire to establish an efficient Energy Conversion System to utilize the fossil fuel of the future - coal - has produced many candidate systems. A comparative technical/economic evaluation was performed on the seven most attractive advanced energy conversion systems. The evaluation maintains a cycle-to-cycle consistency in both performance and economic projections. The technical information base can be employed to make program decisions regarding the most attractive concept. A reference steam power plant was analyzed to the same detail and, under the same ground rules, was used as a comparison base. The power plants were all designed to utilize coal or coal-derived fuels and were targeted to meet an environmental standard. The systems evaluated were two advanced steam systems, a potassium topping cycle, a closed cycle helium system, two open cycle gas turbine combined cycles, and an open cycle MHD system.

Abstract

The Open-Cycle Gas Turbine/Steam Turbine Combined Cycle can be an effective energy conversion system for converting coal to electricity. The intermediate step in this energy conversion process is to convert the coal into a fuel acceptable to a gas turbine. This can be accomplished by producing a synthetic gas or liquid, and by removing, in the fuel conversion step, the elements in the fuel that would be harmful to the environment if combusted. In this paper, two open-cycle gas turbine combined systems are evaluated: one employing an integrated low-Btu gasifier, and one utilizing a semi-clean liquid fuel. A consistent technical/economic information base is developed for these two systems, and is compared with a reference steam plant burning coal directly in a conventional furnace.

The objectives to be realized in developing a closed cycle gas turbine are (1) to exploit high temperature gas turbine technology while maintaining a working fluid which is free from combustion gas contamination, (2) to achieve compact turbo-equipment designs through pressurization of the working fluid, and (3) to obtain relatively simple cycle configurations. The technical/economic performance of a specific closed cycle gas turbine system was evaluated through the development of a conceptual plant and system design. This energy conversion system is designed for electric utility service and to utilize coal directly in an environmentally acceptable manner.

Abstract

Lithified microbial structures (microbialites) have been present on Earth for billions of years. Lithification may impose unique constraints on microbes. For instance, when Ca CO3 forms, phosphate may be captured via coprecipitation and/or adsorption and potentially rendered unavailable for biological uptake. Therefore, the growth of microbes associated with Ca CO3 may be phosphorus-limited. In this study, we compared the effects of resource addition on biogeochemical functions of microbial communities associated with microbialites and photoautotrophic microbial communities not associated with Ca CO3 deposition in Río Mesquites, Cuatro Ciénegas, México. We also manipulated rates of Ca CO3 deposition in microbialites to determine whether lithification reduces the bioavailability of phosphorus (P). We found that P additions significantly increased rates of gross primary production ( F2,13 = 103.9, P < 0.001), net primary production ( F2,13 = 129.6, P < 0.0001) and ecosystem respiration ( F2,13 = 6.44, P < 0.05) in the microbialites, while P addition had no effect on photoautotrophic production in the non-Ca CO3-associated microbial communities. Growth of the non-Ca CO3-associated phototrophs was only marginally stimulated when nitrogen and P were added simultaneously ( F1,36 = 3.98, P = 0.053). In the microbialites, resource additions led to some shifts in the abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Cyanobacteria but mostly had little effect on bacterial community composition. Ca2+ uptake rates increased significantly with organic carbon additions ( F1,13 = 8.02, P < 0.05). Lowering of Ca CO3 deposition by decreasing calcium concentrations in the water led to increased microbial biomass accumulation rates in terms of both organic carbon ( F4,48 = 5.23, P < 0.01) and P ( F6,48 = 13.91, P < 0.001).
