11. Cyberbullying Victimisation and Mental Distress: Testing the Moderating Role of Attachment Security, Social Support, and Coping Styles

Abstract

Although it has been well established that cyberbullying leads to mental health problems, less is known about the factors that confer resilience to the adverse effects of cyberbullying among young people. To address this gap, adolescents aged 13-19 years (n = 476) completed a survey measuring cyberbullying victimisation, attachment styles, perceived social support, coping styles, and mental distress. Compared to non-victims, victims of cyberbullying experienced higher levels of depression and anxiety and endorsed more self-statements indicative of attachment anxiety. Peer support, security in attachment relationships, and the endorsement of positive coping strategies attenuated the positive relationship between cyberbullying victimisation and mental health difficulties. Family support did not appear to buffer adolescents from mental distress in this context. However, family support was the strongest bivariate predictor of reduced mental distress. Although peer relations should be the target of intervention programmes within school settings, the findings highlight the importance of including families in cyberbullying prevention programmes.

Abstract

Practice-based case studies that describe learning from implementation are a useful source of evidence for policy makers, practitioners and researchers. Despite the value of narratives developed in context as a form of experiential or applied evidence, little is known about appropriate qualitative review and synthesis methods to deal with multiple practice-based case studies. This paper reports on a methodological study to develop and pilot a synthesis method using a sample of community wellbeing case studies focused on interventions to improve community infrastructure. The study was conducted in four interlinked phases: (i) literature review to scope synthesis methods (ii) piloting search and selection methods to identify a sample of relevant practice-based case studies that reported experiential learning (iii) undertaking cross case analysis and qualitative synthesis based on framework analysis methods (iv) review and reflection to produce a summative account of the method and agreed definition. The main output from the study was a staged approach to qualitative synthesis of practice-based case studies based on seven steps, which move from identification of a conceptual framework through to producing a narrative report. The potential transferability of this approach and its application in research and policy are critically discussed. Synthesis of case studies derived from community-based interventions could address knowledge gaps in the formal evidence base. While further methodological development is warranted, it is argued that study results form a credible qualitative framework for synthesising practice-based evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. COVID-19 risk mitigation in reopening mass cultural events: population-based observational study for the UK Events Research Programme in Liverpool City Region.

Abstract

Objectives: To understand severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission risks, perceived risks and the feasibility of risk mitigations from experimental mass cultural events before coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) restrictions were lifted. Design: Prospective, population-wide observational study. Setting: Four events (two nightclubs, an outdoor music festival and a business conference) open to Liverpool City Region UK residents, requiring a negative lateral flow test (LFT) within the 36 h before the event, but not requiring social distancing or face-coverings. Participants: A total of 12,256 individuals attending one or more events between 28 April and 2 May 2021. Main outcome measures: SARS-CoV-2 infections detected using audience self-swabbed (5–7 days post-event) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, with viral genomic analysis of cases, plus linked National Health Service COVID-19 testing data. Audience experiences were gathered via questionnaires, focus groups and social media. Indoor CO2 concentrations were monitored. Results: A total of 12 PCR-positive cases (likely 4 index, 8 primary or secondary), 10 from the nightclubs. Two further cases had positive LFTs but no PCR. A total of 11,896 (97.1%) participants with scanned tickets were matched to a negative pre-event LFT: 4972 (40.6%) returned a PCR within a week. CO2 concentrations showed areas for improving ventilation at the nightclubs. Population infection rates were low, yet with a concurrent outbreak of >50 linked cases around a local swimming pool without equivalent risk mitigations. Audience anxiety was low and enjoyment high. Conclusions: We observed minor SARS-CoV-2 transmission and low perceived risks around events when prevalence was low and risk mitigations prominent. Partnership between audiences, event organisers and public health services, supported by information systems with real-time linked data, can improve health security for mass cultural events. Abstract

Objective Given the paucity of evidence-based research investigating different suicidal ideation profiles and trajectories, this project sought to investigate health and socio-economic factors associated with the presence of suicidal ideation and changes in ideation over time. Design Longitudinal cohort design, using logistic regression analysis. Setting A public health survey was administered at two timepoints in a community setting across the North West of England. In the 2015/2016 survey, participants were recruited from high (n=20) and low (n=8) deprivation neighbourhoods. In the 2018 survey, only the 20 high-deprivation neighbourhoods were included. Participants 4287 people were recruited in 2015/2016 and 3361 were recruited in 2018. The 2018 sample was subdivided into those who responded only in 2018 (n=2494: replication sample) and those who responded at both timepoints (n=867: longitudinal sample). Primary outcome measures Suicide ideation was the dependent variable which was assessed using item 9 of the Patient Health Questionnaire instrument. Results The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 11% (n=454/4319) at 2015/2016 and 16% (n=546/3361) at 2018. Replication study results highlighted: persistent debilitation from physical ill health and/or medication side effects; demographic factors (ie, middle-aged, single or never married); and personal coping strategies (ie, smoking) as risk factors for suicidal ideation. A static/improved financial position and high levels of empathy were protective factors. Longitudinal study results confirmed three suicidal ideation trajectories: ‘onset’, ‘remission’ and ‘persistence’. Similar findings to the replication study were evidenced for the onset and persistence trajectories. Persistent suicidal ideation was synonymous with higher levels of practical support which may correspond to the higher levels of debilitation and functional disability reported within this group. 37. The assessment, meaning and amelioration of everyday memory difficulties in people with epilepsy

Abstract

The project was inspired by a frequent, if rather paradoxical, clinical observation. While patients with epilepsy frequently reported disruptive memory difficulties, neuropsychological testing often failed to confirm the serious nature of the patients' complaints. It had previously been assumed that patients were overstating their difficulties. However, the same anomalous pattern has been noted elsewhere, notably in elderly and head-injured samples. This investigation was therefore undertaken to assess further the nature and degree of everyday memory difficulties in people with epilepsy. The first study assessed subjects' beliefs about the incidence of memory failures using self-report techniques. Seven hundred and sixty patients with epilepsy and one hundred and forty-six subjects without epilepsy participated in the study. The level of patients' complaints was explored with respect to epilepsy, treatment and psychological factors. Findings demonstrated significantly more perceived memory failures in the subjects with epilepsy. Factors which were related to this increased vulnerability to failures included later onset of the condition, elevated levels of negative moods and, to a lesser extent, perhaps a less efficient use of preventative memory strategies. In study two the relationship between subjects' beliefs and the prospective recording of memory failures was examined. Results indicated that subjects with epilepsy are underestimating the level of memory failures on the retrospective questionnaire. Study three examined the relationship between memory complaints and actual test performance in a subsample of patients with epilepsy, thirty of whom were classified as complainers and thirty non-complainers. Relationships between performance measures and beliefs were weak. Only 'two memory tests were predictive of self-report indices. Contrary to expectation, tests of planning and organisation were not found to be sensitive to prospective memory performance. Finally, two small scale interventions aimed at ameliorating memory difficulties in this population were conducted. Results were promising though variable with motivational factors contributing greatly.
