In this work, we present a novel emulator of the halo mass function, which we implement in the framework of the e-mantis emulator of $f(R)$ gravity models. We also extend e-mantis to cover a larger cosmological parameter space and to include models of dark energy with a constant equation of state $w$CDM. We use a Latin hypercube sampling of the $w$CDM and $f(R)$CDM cosmological parameter spaces, over a wide range, and realize a large suite of more than $10000$ $N$-body simulations of different volume, mass resolution and random phase of the initial conditions. For each simulation in the suite, we generate halo catalogues using the friends-of-friends halo finder, as well as the spherical overdensity algorithm for different overdensity thresholds. We decompose the corresponding halo mass functions on a B-spline basis, and use this decomposition to train an emulator based on Gaussian processes. The resulting emulator is able to predict the halo mass function for redshifts $\leq 1.5$ and for halo masses $M_h\geq10^{13}\,h^{-1}M_\odot$. The typical HMF errors for SO haloes with $\Delta=200\mathrm{c}$ at $z=0$ in $w$CDM (respectively $f(R)$CDM) are of order of $\epsilon_0\simeq1.5\%$ ($\epsilon_0\simeq4\%$) up to a transition mass $M_t\simeq2\cdot10^{14}\,h^{-1}M_\odot$ ($M_t\simeq6\cdot10^{13}\,h^{-1}M_\odot$). For larger masses, the errors are dominated by shot-noise and scale as $\epsilon_0\cdot\left(M_h/M_t\right)^\alpha$ with $\alpha\simeq0.9$ ($\alpha\simeq0.4$) up to $M_h \sim 10^{15}\,h^{-1}M_\odot$. Independently of this general trend, the emulator is able to provide an estimation of its own error as a function of the cosmological parameters, halo mass, and redshift. The Euclid mission will measure cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. To distinguish between cosmological models, it is essential to generate realistic mock observables from cosmological simulations that were run in both the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm and in many non-standard models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the scientific results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations using non-standard models including dynamical dark energy, k-essence, interacting dark energy, modified gravity, massive neutrinos, and primordial non-Gaussianities. We investigate how these models affect the large-scale-structure formation and evolution in addition to providing synthetic observables that can be used to test and constrain these models with Euclid data. We developed a custom pipeline based on the Rockstar halo finder and the nbodykit large-scale structure toolkit to analyse the particle output of non-standard simulations and generate mock observables such as halo and void catalogues, mass density fields, and power spectra in a consistent way. We compare these observables with those from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and quantify the deviations. We find that non-standard cosmological models can leave significant imprints on the synthetic observables that we have generated. Our results demonstrate that non-standard cosmological N-body simulations provide valuable insights into the physics of dark energy and dark matter, which is essential to maximising the scientific return of Euclid., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. The photometric catalogue of galaxy clusters extracted from ESA Euclid data is expected to be very competitive for cosmological studies. Using state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations, we present systematic analyses simulating the expected weak lensing profiles from clusters in a variety of dynamic states and at wide range of redshifts. In order to derive cluster masses, we use a model consistent with the implementation within the Euclid Consortium of the dedicated processing function and find that, when jointly modelling mass and the concentration parameter of the Navarro-Frenk-White halo profile, the weak lensing masses tend to be, on average, biased low by 5-10% with respect to the true mass, up to z=0.5. Using a fixed value for the concentration $c_{200} = 3$, the mass bias is diminished below 5%, up to z=0.7, along with its relative uncertainty. Simulating the weak lensing signal by projecting along the directions of the axes of the moment of inertia tensor ellipsoid, we find that orientation matters: when clusters are oriented along the major axis, the lensing signal is boosted, and the recovered weak lensing mass is correspondingly overestimated. Typically, the weak lensing mass bias of individual clusters is modulated by the weak lensing signal-to-noise ratio, related to the redshift evolution of the number of galaxies used for weak lensing measurements: the negative mass bias tends to be larger toward higher redshifts. However, when we use a fixed value of the concentration parameter, the redshift evolution trend is reduced. Context. Galaxy cluster masses are usually defined as the mass within a spherical region enclosing a given matter overdensity (in units of the critical density). Converting masses from one overdensity definition to another can have several useful applications. Aims. In this article we present a generic non-parametric formalism that allows one to accurately map the halo mass function between two different mass overdensity definitions using the distribution of halo sparsities defined as the ratio of the two masses. We show that changing mass definitions reduces to modelling the distribution of halo sparsities. Methods. Using standard transformation rules of random variates, we derive relations between the halo mass function at different overdensities and the distribution of halo sparsities. Results. We show that these relations reproduce the N-body halo mass functions from the Uchuu simulation within the statistical errors at a few percent level. Furthermore, these relations allow the halo mass functions at different overdensities to be related to parametric descriptions of the halo density profile. In particular, we discuss the case of the concentration-mass relation of the Navarro-Frenk-White profile. Finally, we show that the use of such relations allows us to predict the distribution of sparsities of a sample of haloes of a given mass, thus opening the way to inferring cosmological constraints from individual galaxy cluster sparsity measurements., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, Accepted in A&A

Euclid's photometric galaxy cluster survey has the potential to be a very competitive cosmological probe. The main cosmological probe with observations of clusters is their number count, within which the halo mass function (HMF) is a key theoretical quantity. We present a new calibration of the analytic HMF, at the level of accuracy and precision required for the uncertainty in this quantity to be subdominant with respect to other sources of uncertainty in recovering cosmological parameters from Euclid cluster counts. Our model is calibrated against a suite of N-body simulations using a Bayesian approach taking into account systematic errors arising from numerical effects in the simulation. First, we test the convergence of HMF predictions from different N-body codes, by using initial conditions generated with different orders of Lagrangian Perturbation theory, and adopting different simulation box sizes and mass resolution. Then, we quantify the effect of using different halo-finder algorithms, and how the resulting differences propagate to the cosmological constraints. In order to trace the violation of universality in the HMF, we also analyse simulations based on initial conditions characterised by scale-free power spectra with different spectral indexes, assuming both Einstein--de Sitter and standard $\Lambda$CDM expansion histories. Based on these results, we construct a fitting function for the HMF that we demonstrate to be sub-percent accurate in reproducing results from 9 different variants of the $\Lambda$CDM model including massive neutrinos cosmologies. The calibration systematic uncertainty is largely sub-dominant with respect to the expected precision of future mass-observation relations; with the only notable exception of the effect due to the halo finder, that could lead to biased cosmological inference., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables, 3 appendixes; v2 matches published version

The dark matter halo sparsity, i.e. the ratio between spherical halo masses enclosing two different overdensities, provides a non-parametric proxy of the halo mass distribution which has been shown to be a sensitive probe of the cosmological imprint encoded in the mass profile of haloes hosting galaxy clusters. Mass estimations at several overdensities would allow for multiple sparsity measurements, that can potentially retrieve the entirety of the cosmological information imprinted on the halo profile. Here, we investigate the impact of multiple sparsity measurements on the cosmological model parameter inference. For this purpose, we analyse N-body halo catalogues from the Raygal and M2Csims simulations and evaluate the correlations among six different sparsities from Spherical Overdensity halo masses at $\Delta=200,500,1000$ and $2500$ (in units of the critical density). Remarkably, sparsities associated to distinct halo mass shells are not highly correlated. This is not the case for sparsities obtained using halo masses estimated from the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) best-fit profile, that artificially correlates different sparsities to order one. This implies that there is additional information in the mass profile beyond the NFW parametrization and that it can be exploited with multiple sparsities. In particular, from a likelihood analysis of synthetic average sparsity data, we show that cosmological parameter constraints significantly improve when increasing the number of sparsity combinations, though the constraints saturate beyond four sparsity estimates. Numerical simulations have shown that massive dark matter haloes, which today host galaxy clusters, assemble their mass over time alternating periods of quiescent accretion and phases of rapid growth associated with major merger episodes. Observations of such events in clusters can provide insights on the astrophysical processes that characterise the properties of the intra-cluster medium, as well as the gravitational processes that contribute to their assembly. It is therefore of prime interest to devise a fast and reliable way of detecting such perturbed systems. We present a novel approach to identifying and timing major mergers in clusters characterised by large values of halo sparsity. Using halo catalogues from the MultiDark-Planck2 simulation, we show that major merger events disrupt the radial mass distribution of haloes, thus leaving a distinct universal imprint on the evolution of halo sparsity over a period not exceeding two dynamical times. We exploit this feature using numerically calibrated distributions to test whether an observed galaxy cluster with given sparsity measurements has undergone a recent major merger and to eventually estimate when such an event occurred. We implement these statistical tools in a specifically developed public python library \textsc{lammas}, which we apply to the analysis of Abell 383 and Abell 2345 as test cases. Finding that, for example, Abell 2345 had a major merger about $2.1\pm 0.2$ Gyr ago. General Relativistic effects on the clustering of matter in the universe provide a sensitive probe of cosmology and gravity theories that can be tested with the upcoming generation of galaxy surveys. Here, we present a suite of large volume high-resolution N-body simulations specifically designed to generate light-cone data for the study of relativistic effects on lensing-matter observables. RayGalGroupSims (or in short RayGal) consists of two N-body simulations of $(2625\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc})^3$ volume with $4096^3$ particles of a standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model and a non-standard $w$CDM phantom dark energy model. Light-cone data from the simulations have been generated using a parallel ray-tracing algorithm that has accurately solved billion geodesic equations. Catalogues and maps with relativistic weak-lensing which include post-Born effects, magnification bias (MB) and redshift space distortions (RSD) due to gravitational redshift, Doppler, transverse Doppler, Integrated Sachs-Wolfe/Rees-Sciama effects, are publicly released. Using this dataset, we are able to reproduce the linear and quasi-linear predictions from the Class relativistic code for the 10 (cross-)power spectra (3$\times$2 points) of the matter density fluctuation field and the gravitational convergence at $z=0.7$ and $z=1.8$. We find $1-30\%$ level contribution from both MB and RSD to the matter power spectrum, while the Fingers-of-God effect is visible at lower redshift in the non-linear regime. MB contributes at the $10-30\%$ level to the convergence power spectrum leading to a deviation between the shear power-spectrum and the convergence power-spectrum. MB also plays a significant role in the galaxy-galaxy lensing by decreasing the density-convergence spectra by $20\%$, while coupling non-trivial configurations (such as the one with the convergence at the same or even lower redshift than the density field)., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures, minor modifications to match A&A version, RayGal data available at https://cosmo.obspm.fr/public-datasets

Large samples of galaxy clusters provide knowledge of both astrophysics in the most massive virialised environments and the properties of the cosmological model that defines our Universe. However, an important issue that affects the interpretation of galaxy cluster samples is the role played by the selection waveband and the potential for this to introduce a bias in the physical properties of clusters thus selected. We aim to investigate waveband-dependent selection effects in the identification of galaxy clusters by comparing the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) Ultimate Extra-galactic Survey (XXL) and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) CAMIRA cluster samples identified from a common 22.6 deg2 sky area. We compare 150 XXL and 270 CAMIRA clusters in a common parameter space defined by X-ray aperture brightness and optical richness. We find that 71/150 XXL clusters are matched to the location of a CAMIRA cluster, the majority of which (67/71) display richness values N>15 that exceed the CAMIRA catalogue richness threshold. We find that 67/270 CAMIRA clusters are matched to the location of an XXL cluster (defined within XXL as an extended X-ray source). Of the unmatched CAMIRA clusters, the majority display low X-ray fluxes consistent with the lack of an XXL counterpart. However, a significant fraction (64/107) CAMIRA clusters that display high X-ray fluxes are not asociated with an extended source in the XXL catalogue. In recent years, the availability of large, complete cluster samples has enabled numerous cosmological parameter inference analyses using cluster number counts. These have provided constraints on the cosmic matter density $\Omega_m$ and the amplitude of matter density fluctuations $\sigma_8$ alternative to those obtained from other standard probes. However, systematics uncertainties, such as the mass calibration bias and selection effects, may still significantly affect these data analyses. Hence, it is timely to explore other proxies of galaxy cluster cosmology that can provide cosmological constraints complementary to those obtained from cluster number counts. Here, we use measurements of the cluster sparsity from weak lensing mass estimates of the LC$^2$-{\it single} and HSC-XXL cluster catalogs to infer constraints on a flat $\Lambda$CDM model. The cluster sparsity has the advantage of being insensitive to selection and mass calibration bias. On the other hand, it primarily constrains a degenerate combination of $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$ (along approximately constant curves of $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3}$), and to less extent the reduced Hubble parameter $h$. Hence, in order to break the internal parameter degeneracies we perform a combined likelihood analysis of cluster sparsities with cluster gas mass fraction measurements and BAO data. We find marginal constraints that are competitive with those from other standard cosmic probes: $\Omega_m=0.316\pm 0.013$, $\sigma_8=0.757\pm 0.067$ (corresponding to $S_8=0.776\pm 0.064$) and $h=0.696\pm 0.017$ at $1\sigma$. Moreover, assuming a conservative Gaussian prior on the mass bias of gas mass fraction data, we find a lower limit on the gas depletion factor $Y_{b,500c}\gtrsim 0.89$., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. The Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE) is a three mega-second Multi-Year Heritage Programme to obtain X-ray observations of a minimally-biased, signal-to-noise limited sample of 118 galaxy clusters detected by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The programme, described in detail in this paper, aims to study the ultimate products of structure formation in time and mass. It is composed of a census of the most recent objects to have formed (Tier-1: 0.05 < z < 0.2; 2 x 10e14 M_sun < M_500 < 9 x 10e14 M_sun), together with a sample of the highest-mass objects in the Universe (Tier-2: z < 0.6; M_500 > 7.25 x 10e14 M_sun). The programme will yield an accurate vision of the statistical properties of the underlying population, measure how the gas properties are shaped by collapse into the dark matter halo, uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating, and resolve the major uncertainties in mass determination that limit the use of clusters for cosmological parameter estimation. We will acquire X-ray exposures of uniform depth, designed to obtain individual mass measurements accurate to 15-20% under the hydrostatic assumption. The linear point (LP), defined as the mid-point between the dip and the peak of the two-point clustering correlation function (TPCF), has been shown to be an excellent standard ruler for cosmology. In fact, it is nearly redshift-independent, being weakly sensitive to non-linearities, scale-dependent halo bias and redshift-space distortions. So far, these findings were tested assuming that neutrinos are massless; in this paper we extend the analysis to massive-neutrino cosmologies. In particular, we examine if the scale-dependent growth induced by neutrinos affects the LP position and if it is possible to detect the neutrino masses using the shift of the LP compared to the massless-neutrino case. For our purposes, we employ two sets of state-of-the-art $N$-body simulations with massive neutrinos. For each of them we measure the TPCF of cold dark matter (CDM) and halos and, to estimate the LP, fit the TPCF with a model-independent parametric fit in the range of scales of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). Overall, we find that the LP retains its features as a standard ruler even when neutrinos are massive. Modified Gravity (MG) scenarios have been advocated to account for the dark energy phenomenon in the universe. These models predict departures from General Relativity on large cosmic scales that can be tested through a variety of probes such as observations of galaxy clusters among others. Here, we investigate the imprint of MG models on the internal mass distribution of cluster-like halos as probed by the dark matter halo sparsity. To this purpose we perform a comparative analysis of the properties of the halo sparsity using N-body simulation halo catalogs of a standard flat $\Lambda$CDM model and MG scenarios from the DUSTGRAIN-pathfinder simulation suite. We find that the onset of the screening mechanism leaves a distinct signature in the redshift evolution of the ensemble average halos sparsity. Measurements of the sparsity of galaxy clusters from currently available mass estimates are unable to test MG models due to the large uncertainties on the cluster masses. We show that this should be possible in the future provided large cluster samples with cluster masses determined to better than $30\%$ accuracy level., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. We present a new cosmological probe for galaxy clusters, the halo sparsity. This characterises halos in terms of the ratio of halo masses measured at two different radii and carries cosmological information encoded in the halo mass profile. Building upon the work of Balmes et al. (2014) we test the properties of the sparsity using halo catalogs from a numerical N-body simulation of ($2.6$ Gpc/h)$^3$ volume with $4096^3$ particles. We show that at a given redshift the average sparsity can be predicted from prior knowledge of the halo mass function. This provides a quantitative framework to infer cosmological parameter constraints using measurements of the sparsity of galaxy clusters. We show this point by performing a likelihood analysis of synthetic datasets with no systematics, from which we recover the input fiducial cosmology. We also perform a preliminary analysis of potential systematic errors and provide an estimate of the impact of baryonic effects on sparsity measurements. We evaluate the sparsity for a sample of 104 clusters with hydrostatic masses from X-ray observations and derive constraints on the cosmic matter density $\Omega_m$ and the normalisation amplitude of density fluctuations at the $8$ Mpc h$^{-1}$ scale, $\sigma_8$. Assuming no systematics, we find $\Omega_m=0.42\pm 0.17$ and $\sigma_8=0.80\pm 0.31$ at $1\sigma$, corresponding to $S_8\equiv \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m}=0.48\pm 0.11$. Future cluster surveys may provide opportunities for precise measurements of the sparsity. We use state-of-art measurements of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) at z=6, 7 and 8 to derive constraints on warm dark matter (WDM), late-forming dark matter (LFDM) and ultra-light axion dark matter (ULADM) models alternative to the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm. To this purpose we have run a suite of high-resolution N-body simulations to accurately characterise the low mass-end of the halo mass function and derive DM model predictions of the high-z luminosity function. In order to convert halo masses into UV-magnitudes we introduce an empirical approach based on halo abundance matching which allows us to model the LF in terms of the amplitude and scatter of the ensemble average star formation rate halo mass relation of each DM model, $\langle {\rm SFR}({\rm M_{ h}},z)\rangle$. We find that independent of the DM scenario the average SFR at fixed halo mass increases from z=6 to 8, while the scatter remains constant. At halo mass ${\rm M_{h}}\gtrsim 10^{12}\,{\rm M}_\odot$ h$^{-1}$ the average SFR as function of halo mass follows a double power law trend that is common to all models, while differences occur at smaller masses. In particular, we find that models with a suppressed low-mass halo abundance exhibit higher SFR compared to the CDM results. Using deviance statistics we obtain a lower limit on the WDM thermal relic particle mass, $m_{\rm WDM}\gtrsim 1.5$ keV at $2\sigma$. In the case of LFDM models, the phase transition redshift parameter is bounded to $z_t\gtrsim 8\cdot 10^5$ at $2\sigma$. We find ULADM best-fit models with axion mass $m_a\gtrsim 1.6\cdot 10^{-22}$ eV to be well within $2\sigma$ of the deviance statistics. We remark that measurements at $z=6$ slightly favour a flattening of the LF at faint UV-magnitudes. This tends to prefer some of the non-CDM models in our simulation suite, although not at a statistically significant level to distinguish them from CDM., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures; added separate analysis using LF data at z=6 from Livermore et al. The XXL survey currently covers two 25 sq. deg. patches with XMM observations of ~10ks. We summarise the scientific results associated with the first release of the XXL data set, that occurred mid 2016. We review several arguments for increasing the survey depth to 40 ks during the next decade of XMM operations. X-ray (z<2) cluster, (z<4) AGN and cosmic background survey science will then benefit from an extraordinary data reservoir. This, combined with deep multi-$\lambda$ observations, will lead to solid standalone cosmological constraints and provide a wealth of information on the formation and evolution of AGN, clusters and the X-ray background. In particular, it will offer a unique opportunity to pinpoint the z>1 cluster density. We discuss an extension of the Coyote emulator to predict non-linear matter power spectra of dark energy (DE) models with a scale factor dependent equation of state of the form w = w_0 + ( 1 - a )w_a . The extension is based on the mapping rule between non-linear spectra of DE models with constant equation of state and those with time varying one originally introduced in ref. [40]. Using a series of N-body simulations we show that the spectral equivalence is accurate to sub-percent level across the same range of modes and redshift covered by the Coyote suite. Thus, the extended emulator provides a very efficient and accurate tool to predict non-linear power spectra for DE models with w_0 - w_a parametrization. According to the same criteria we have developed a numerical code, and we have implemented in a dedicated module for the CAMB code, that can be used in combination with the Coyote Emulator in likelihood analyses of non-linear matter power spectrum measurements. We present the XXL Survey, the largest XMM programme totaling some 6.9 Ms to date and involving an international consortium of roughly 100 members. The XXL Survey covers two extragalactic areas of 25 deg2 each at a point-source sensitivity of ~ 5E-15 erg/sec/cm2 in the [0.5-2] keV band (completeness limit). The survey's main goals are to provide constraints on the dark energy equation of state from the space-time distribution of clusters of galaxies and to serve as a pathfinder for future, wide-area X-ray missions. We review science objectives, including cluster studies, AGN evolution, and large-scale structure, that are being conducted with the support of approximately 30 follow-up programmes. We describe the 542 XMM observations along with the associated multi-lambda and numerical simulation programmes. We give a detailed account of the X-ray processing steps and describe innovative tools being developed for the cosmological analysis. The paper provides a thorough evaluation of the X-ray data, including quality controls, photon statistics, exposure and background maps, and sky coverage. Source catalogue construction and multi-lambda associations are briefly described. This material will be the basis for the calculation of the cluster and AGN selection functions, critical elements of the cosmological and science analyses. The XXL multi-lambda data set will have a unique lasting legacy value for cosmological and extragalactic studies and will serve as a calibration resource for future dark energy studies with clusters and other X-ray selected sources. With the present article, we release the XMM XXL photon and smoothed images along with the corresponding exposure maps. We show how cross-correlating a high redshift external tracer field, such as the 21cm neutral hydrogen distribution and product maps involving Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarisation fields, that probe mixed bispectrum involving these fields, can help to determine the reionization history of the Universe, beyond what can be achieved from cross-spectrum analysis. Taking clues from recent studies for the detection of primordial non-Gaussianity (Munshi & Heavens 2010), we develop a set of estimators that can study reionization using a power spectrum associated with the bispectrum (or skew-spectrum). We use the matched filtering inherent in this method to investigate different reionization histories. We check to what extent they can be used to rule out various models of reionization and study cross contamination from different sources such as the lensing of the CMB. The estimators can be fine-tuned to optimize study of a specific reionization history. We consider three different types of tracers in our study, namely: proto-galaxies; 21cm maps of neutral hydrogen; quasars. We also consider four alternative models of reionization. We find that the cumulative signal-to-noise (S/N) for detection at $\ell_{max}=2000$ can reach $\mathcal{O}(70)$ for cosmic variance limited all-sky experiments. Combining 100GHz, 143GHz and 217GHz channels of the Planck experiment, we find that the (S/N) lies in the range $\mathcal{O}(5)-\mathcal{O}(35)$. The (S/N) depends on the specific choice of a tracer field, and multiple tracers can be effectively used to map out the entire reionization history with reasonable S/N. The excursion set approach provides a framework for predicting how the abundance of dark matter halos depends on the initial conditions. A key ingredient of this formalism comes from the physics of halo formation: the specification of a critical overdensity threshold (barrier) which protohalos must exceed if they are to form bound virialized halos at a later time. Another ingredient is statistical, as it requires the specification of the appropriate statistical ensemble over which to average when making predictions. The excursion set approach explicitly averages over all initial positions, thus implicitly assuming that the appropriate ensemble is that associated with randomly chosen positions in space, rather than special positions such as peaks of the initial density field. Since halos are known to collapse around special positions, it is not clear that the physical and statistical assumptions which underlie the excursion set approach are self-consistent. We argue that they are at least for low mass halos, and illustrate by comparing our excursion set predictions with numerical data from the DEUS simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We use the Excursion Set formalism to compute the properties of the halo mass distribution for a stochastic barrier model which encapsulates the main features of the ellipsoidal collapse of dark matter halos. Non-markovian corrections due to the sharp filtering of the linear density field in real space are computed with the path-integral technique introduced by Maggiore & Riotto (2010). Here, we provide a detailed derivation of the results presented in Corasaniti & Achitouv (2011) and extend the mass function analysis to higher redshift. We also derive an analytical expression for the linear halo bias. We find the analytically derived mass function to be in remarkable agreement with N-body simulation data from Tinker et al. (2008) with differences smaller than ~5% over the range of mass probed by the simulations. The excursion set solution from Monte Carlo generated random walks shows the same level of agreement, thus confirming the validity of the path-integral approach for the barrier model considered here. Similarly the analysis of the linear halo bias shows deviations no greater than 20%. We explore the cosmological constraints expected from wide area XMM-type cluster surveys covering 50-200 deg2, under realistic observing conditions. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis based on cluster number counts in combination with estimates of the 2-point cluster correlation function. The effect of the survey design is implemented through an observationally well tested cluster selection function. Special attention is given to the modelling of the shot noise and sample variance, which we estimate by applying our selection function to numerically simulated surveys. We then infer the constraints on the equation of state of the dark energy considering various survey configurations. In this "Invisible Universe" proceedings, we introduce the Dark Energy Universe Simulation Series (DEUSS) which aim at investigating the imprints of realistic dark energy models on cosmic structure formation. It represents the largest dynamical dark energy simulation suite to date in term of spatial dynamics. We first present the 3 realistic dark energy models (calibrated on latest SNIa and CMB data): LambdaCDM, quintessence with Ratra-Peebles potential, and quintessence with Sugra potential. We then isolate various contributions for non-linear matter power spectra from a series of pre-DEUSS high-resolution simulations (130 million particles). Finally, we introduce DEUSS which consist in 9 Grand Challenge runs with 1 billion particles each thus probing scales from 4 Gpc down to 3 kpc at z=0. We present N-body cosmological numerical simulations including a primordial non-Gaussianity in the density fluctuation field quantified by the non-linear parameter $f_{NL}$. We have used MPGRAFIC code to produce initial conditions and the Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) code RAMSES to evolve the large scale structure formation. The universality of the halo mass function is investigated in the context of dark energy cosmologies. This widely used approximation assumes that the mass function can be expressed as a function of the matter density omega_m and the rms linear density fluctuation sigma only, with no explicit dependence on the properties of dark energy or redshift. In order to test this hypothesis we run a series of 15 high-resolution N-body simulations for different cosmological models. These consists of three LCDM cosmologies best fitting WMAP-1, 3 and 5 years data, and three toy-models characterized by a Ratra-Peebles quintessence potential with different slopes and amounts of dark energy density. These toy models have very different evolutionary histories at the background and linear level, but share the same sigma8 value. For each of these models we measure the mass function from catalogues of halos identified in the simulations using the Friend-of-Friend (FoF) algorithm. We find redshift dependent deviations from a universal behaviour, well above numerical uncertainties and of non-stochastic origin, which are correlated with the linear growth factor of the investigated cosmologies. Using the spherical collapse as guidance, we show that such deviations are caused by the cosmology dependence of the non-linear collapse and virialization process. For practical applications, we provide a fitting formula of the mass function accurate to 5 percents over the all range of investigated cosmologies. We also derive an empirical relation between the FoF linking parameter and the virial overdensity which can account for most of the deviations from an exact universal behavior. Dark energy as a quintessence component causes a typical modification of the background cosmic expansion, which in addition to its clustering properties, can leave a potentially distinctive signature on large scale structures. Many previous studies have investigated this topic, particularly in relation to the non-linear regime of structure formation. However, no careful pre-selection of viable quintessence models with high precision cosmological data was performed. Here we show that this has led to a misinterpretation (and underestimation) of the imprint of quintessence on the distribution of large scale structures. To this purpose we perform a likelihood analysis of the combined Supernova Ia UNION dataset and WMAP5-years data to identify realistic quintessence models. Differences from the vanilla LambdaCDM are especially manifest in the predicted amplitude and shape of the linear matter power spectrum, though these remain within the uncertainties of the SDSS data. We use these models as benchmark for studying the clustering properties of dark matter halos by performing a series of high resolution N-body simulations. We find that realistic quintessence models allow for relevant differences of the dark matter distribution with the respect to the LambdaCDM scenario well into the non-linear regime, with deviations up to 40% in the non-linear power spectrum. Such differences are shown to depend on the nature of DE, as well as the scale and epoch considered. At small scales (k~1-5 h Mpc^{-1}, depending on the redshift) the structure formation process is about 20% more efficient than in LambdaCDM. We show that these imprints are a specific record of the cosmic structure formation history in DE cosmologies and therefore cannot be accounted in standard fitting functions of the non-linear matter power spectrum., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures. While large scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies involve a combination of the scalar and tensor fluctuations, the scalar amplitude can be independently determined through the CMB-galaxy cross-correlation. Using recently measured cross-correlation amplitudes, arising from the cross-correlation between galaxies and the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect in CMB anisotropies, we obtain a constraint r < 0.5 at 68% confidence level on the tensor-to-scalar fluctuation amplitude ratio. The data also allow us to exclude gravity waves at a level of a few percent, relative to the density field, in a low - Lambda dominated universe(Omega_Lambda~0.5). In future, joining cross-correlation ISW measurements, which captures cosmological parameter information, with independent determinations of the matter density and CMB anisotropy power spectrum, may constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio to a level above 0.05. We investigate the possibility of constraining dark energy with the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect recently detected by cross-correlating the WMAP maps with several Large Scale Structure surveys. In agreement with previous works, we found that, under the assumption of a flat universe, the ISW signal is a promising tool for constraining dark energy. Current available data put weak limits on a constant dark energy equation of state w. We also find no constraints on the dark energy sound speed c_e^2. For quintessence-like dark energy (c_e^2=1) we find w<-0.53, while tighter bounds are possible only if the dark energy is ``clustered'' (c_e^2=0), in such a case -1.94

Detecting dark energy dynamics is the main quest of current dark energy research. Addressing the issue demands a fully consistent analysis of CMB, large scale structure and SN-Ia data with multi-parameter freedom valid for all redshifts. Here we undertake a ten parameter analysis of general dark energy confronted with the first year WMAP, 2dF galaxy survey and latest SN-Ia data. Despite the huge freedom in dark energy dynamics there are no new degeneracies with standard cosmic parameters apart from a mild degeneracy between reionisation and the redshift of acceleration, both of which effectively suppress small scale power. Breaking this degeneracy will help significantly in detecting dynamics, if it exists. Our best-fit model to the data has significant late-time evolution at z<1.5. Phantom models are also considered and we find that the best-fit crosses w=-1 which, if confirmed, would be a clear signal for radically new physics. Treatment of such rapidly varying models requires careful integration of the dark energy density usually not implemented in standard codes, leading to crucial errors of up to 5%. Nevertheless cosmic variance means that standard LCDM models are still a very good fit to the data and evidence for dynamics is currently very weak. Independent tests of reionisation or the epoch of acceleration (e.g. ISW-LSS correlations) or reduction of cosmic variance at large scales (e.g. cluster polarisation at high redshift) may prove key in the hunt for dynamics., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures. We study the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect using a model-independent parameterization of the dark energy equation of state. Cosmic variance severely restricts the class of models distinguishable from Lambda-CDM. In particular if the present value of the equation of state satisfies w_Q^o <-0.8, the only distinguishable models are those with a rapidly varying equation of state, characterized by a late transition occurring at redshifts z<3. Due to the degeneracy with other cosmological parameters, models with a slowly varying behavior cannot be differentiated from each other or from a cosmological constant using even cosmic variance-limited CMB measurements. The consensus of opinion in cosmology is that the Universe is currently undergoing a period of accelerated expansion. With current and proposed high precision experiments it offers the hope of being able to discriminate between the two competing models that are being suggested to explain the observations, namely a cosmological constant or a time dependent `Quintessence' model. The latter suffers from a plethora of scalar field potentials all leading to similar late time behaviour of the universe, hence to a lack of predictability. In this paper, we develop a model independent approach which simply involves parameterizing the dark energy equation of state in terms of known observables. Quintessence has been introduced as an alternative to the cosmological constant scenario to account for the current acceleration of the universe. This new dark energy component allows values of the equation of state parameter $w_{Q}^0\geq-1$, and in principle measurements of cosmological distances to Type Ia supernovae can be used to distinguish between these two types of models. Assuming a flat universe, we use the supernovae data and measurements of the position of the acoustic peaks in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectra to constrain a rather general class of Quintessence potentials, including inverse power law models and recently proposed Supergravity inspired potentials. In particular we use a likelihood analysis, marginalizing over the dark energy density $\Omega_{Q}$, the physical baryon density $\Omega_{b}h^2$ and the scalar spectral index $n$, to constrain the slopes of our Quintessence potential. Considering only the first Doppler peak the best fit in our range of models gives $w_{Q}^0\sim-0.8$. However, including the SnIa data and the three peaks, we find an upper limit on the present value of the equation of state parameter, $-1\leq w_{Q}^0\leq-0.93$ at $2\sigma$, a result that appears to rule out a class of recently proposed potentials., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in PRD, 7 pages, 6 figures. The analysis of the CMB anisotropies is a rich source of cosmological informations. In our study, we simulated the signals produced by the relics of a first order phase transition occured during an inflationary epoch in the early Universe. These relics are bubbles of true vacuum that leave a characteristic non-Gaussian imprint on the CMB. We use different statistical estimators in order to evaluate this non-Gaussianity. We obtain some limits on the allowed values of the bubble parameters comparing our results with the experimental data. The existence of large scale voids in several galaxy surveys suggests the occurence of an inflationary first order phase transition. This process generates primordial bubbles that, before evolving into the present voids, leave at decoupling a non-Gaussian imprint on the CMB.
