Abstract

This paper focuses on the simulation analysis and the experimental implementation of a Rule-Based (RB) control strategy for on-board energy management of a Hybrid Solar Vehicle (HSV), consisting in a series hybrid electric vehicle assisted by photovoltaic panels. The RB strategy consists of two tasks: one external, which determines the final battery State of Charge (SOC) to be reached at the end of the driving schedule to allow full exploitation of solar energy during parking phase; the other internal, whose aim is to define the optimal Electric Generator (ICE-EG) power trajectory and SOC oscillation around the final value. This control strategy has been implemented in a real time NI® cRIO control unit, thus allowing to perform experimental tests for energy management validation on a real HSV prototype developed at the University of Salerno. Ce document présente l’analyse et la mise en oeuvre d’expérimentation de règles bases RB (Rule Base) de stratégie de contrôle pour la gestion d’énergie à bord d’un véhicule hybride solaire HSV (Hybrid Solar Vehicle) qui est constitué d’un véhicule hybride électrique fabriqué en série et alimenté par des panneaux photovoltaïques. La stratégie RB se compose de deux tâches : l’une externe, qui détermine l’état final de charge de la batterie (SOC, State of Charge) qui doit être atteint à la fin du cycle de conduite pour permettre la pleine exploitation de l’énergie solaire pendant la phase de stationnement, l’autre interne, dont le but est de définir le générateur électrique optimal (ICEEG, Internal Combustion Engine – Electric Generator), la trajectoire de la puissance et l’oscillation du SOC autour de la valeur finale. Cette stratégie de contrôle a été mise en oeuvre en temps réel dans une unité de contrôle NI®cRIO (National Instruments compact RIO), permettant ainsi d’effectuer des essais expérimentaux pour la validation de la gestion d’énergie sur un prototype réel HSV développé par l’Université de Salerne.

Abstract

Background/Aim: A much-debated topic relating to patients at risk of local prostate cancer recurrence, but with post-operative leveIs of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) lower than 0.2 ng/ml, concerns the best timing of postoperative radiotherapy (RT), adjuvant or salvage? The present monocentric, retrospective study aimed to investigate the best PSA value at which to plan salvage RT for patients with recurrent prostate cancer. Patients and Methods: From January 2011 to December 2019, 158 patients were treated with adjuvant RT at Pisa University Hospital, whilst 91 patients underwent salvage RT. We grouped the patients treated with salvage RT using their PSA values at the time of salvage RT: PSA >0.5 ng/ml, PSA between 0 and 0.5 ng/ml, and PSA ≤0.2 ng/ml. The median follow-up was 63 months. Biochemical recurrence-free survival (BFS) measured from surgery was the primary endpoint. Results: Salvage RT led to shorter BFS compared to adjuvant RT considering the whole cohort of patients, with a hazard ratio of 3.195 (95% confidence interval=1.534-6.655, p=0.002). However, analysing only the group of patients with PSA ≤0.2 ng/ml at the time of salvage RT, salvage RT led to BFS similar to that achieved with adjuvant RT (p=0.35). Conclusion: Our results suggest that when scheduled for patients with a PSA ≤0.2 ng/ml, salvage RT results in equivalent biochemical control to that with adjuvant RT.

Abstract

Background: In the last years, functional imaging has given a significant contribution to the clinical decision-making of biochemically relapsed prostate cancer (PCa). Hereby, we present a prospective study aiming to validate the role of [18F]Fluoro-Methyl Choline ([18F]FMCH) PET/CT in the selection of PCa patients suitable for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Methods: Patients with biochemical recurrence limited up to three lesions revealed by [18F]FMCH PET/CT were enrolled in the present study and treated with SBRT on all active lesions. Systemic therapy-free survival since the [18F]FMCH PET/CT was considered as the primary endpoint. Results: Forty-six patients were evaluated, and a total of 67 lesions were treated. After a median follow-up of 28.9 months, systemic therapy was started in 30 patients (65.2%) and median systemic therapy-free survival was 39.1 months (95% CI 6.5–68.6); 6, 12, and 24-month ratios were 93.5%, 73.9%, and 63.1%, respectively. At univariate Cox regression analysis, Delta PSA demonstrated an impact on systemic therapy-free survival (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Based on our findings, [18F]FMCH PET/CT can identify oligometastatic prostate cancer patients suitable for SBRT, resulting in a systemic therapy-free survival of 39.1 months.

Abstract

Background/Aim: In the last years, the use of Image Guided Stereotactic Radiotherapy (IG-SBRT) in patients with metastatic prostate cancer has increased. In this study, we aimed to assess the role of IG-SBRT in terms of local control and safety in patients with metastatic prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: Primary and secondary endpoints of this prospective observational study were local control and safety related to IG-SBRT. All lesions were treated with 24 Gy as a single fraction or 27 Gy in 3 fractions. After SBRT, Systemic therapies were administered only after the occurrence of more than three synchronous active lesions in oligometastatic patients (patients with less than 4 active synchronous lesions) or new lesions occurrence in patients with more than 3 synchronous lesions. Results: From April 2011 to June 2017, 78 metastatic lesions (32 bone and 46 node) from 51 patients with prostate cancer were treated. After a median follow-up of 18.5 months (range=3-103 months), only 2 lesions (4%) relapsed inside the radiation field. All local recurrences were located on the bone. Estimated 12 and 24 months local control ratios were 98.7 and 97.4%, respectively. Except for one case, toxicity greater than G2 was not recorded. Conclusion: IG-SBRT is safe and can be considered as a valid therapy in patients with metastatic prostate cancer requiring a long-lasting metastases control.

Abstract

The raising of the transport infrastructure sector through the digital transformation of roads is a factor for sustainable and intelligent development of the Country, in order to create safer, cheaper, better-used and fruited infrastructures generating data and services for a better travel experience for citizens, facilitating freight transport and helping to determine a technology-friendly ecosystem for businesses. A specific need for the digital transformation of roadways consists in acquiring the geometric features of existing roads. The process is known as reverse engineering, or Scan to BIM, and generates object models that can be implemented and usable on BIM platforms. BIM is the tool that best suits these operational needs in the various fields and in all the advancing stages of the life cycle of the work, from conception to disposal. The case study shows the solid parametric modeling of the rural road SP430 "Cilentana" (SS18VAR), one of the main route for the Southern areas of Campania Region. The BIM platform provides the ability to extract road alignment, profiles and cross sections from the 3D model at any time. Processes can be dynamically updated as a result of any modifications made to the model for extraordinary adjustments and/or maintenance of the road. Autodesk Software packages Civil 3D and Infraworks were used in a combined approach.

It is noted that the use of combustible gases is much more efficient and cleaner compared to the one based on the coal conversion in the production of DRI.

Abstract

Background: The role of radiolabeled choline (Cho) in patients with biochemical recurrence after radical treatment for prostate cancer (PCA) is well established. Its widespread clinical use has prompted the depiction of incidentalomas, unusual sites of metastatic lesions, as well as false positive and negative cases. We reported a series of patients affected by biochemical recurrence of PCA imaged by [18F]Cho positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) which resulted suspected for a second malignancy. Case presentation: [18F]Cho PET/CT was performed in patients with biochemical PCA recurrence. From an internal clinical database we identified patients in which PET/CT resulted suspected for a second malignancy. A second malignancy was suspected in presence of "unusual" site of [18F]Cho uptake not consistent with clinical-instrumental history. Histology was used as reference standard for final diagnosis. Seven PCA patients (76 years, 71-84 years) with the suspicion of a second tumor based on [18F]Cho PET/CT findings were identified. Mean value of PSA at the time of [18F]Cho PET/CT was 2,37 ng/mL. The median time between PCA diagnosis and PET/CT was 6 years (range 0-14 years). In two cases history of a second malignancy (lung cancer and cutaneous basocellular carcinoma) was known (diagnosed 12 and 6 years after PCA, respectively). PET/CT identified 13 sites of [18F]Cho uptake (lung = 5, lymph node = 7, bone = 1). Final diagnosis was consistent with lung cancer in 5/7 cases (first diagnosis = 4/5, recurrence = 1/5), colorectal cancer and nodal metastases from melanoma in 1 case each. Conclusions: Although the clinical usefulness of Cho PET/CT for detecting cancer lesions other than prostate origin is known, for those patients who undergo this examination according to indication, the diagnosis of a second tumor has a significant impact on their therapeutic management.

Abstract

Background: A new entity of patients with recurrent prostate cancer limited to a small number of active metastatic lesions is having growing interest: the oligometastatic patients. Patients with oligometastatic disease could eventually be managed by treating all the active lesions with local therapy, i.e. either surgery or ablative stereotactic body radiotherapy. This study aims to assess the impact of [18F]Choline ([18F]FMCH) PET/CT and the use stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in patients (pts) with oligometastatic prostate cancer (PCa). Methods: Twenty-nine pts with oligometastatic PCa (≤3 synchronous active lesions detected with [18F]FMCHPET/CT) were treated with repeated salvage SBRT until disease progression (development of > three active synchronous metastases). Primary endpoint was systemic therapy-free survival measured from the baseline [18F]FMCHPET/CT. Results: A total of 45 lesions were treated with SBRT. After a median follow-up of 11.5 months (range 3-40 months), 20 pts were still in the study and did not receive any systemic therapy. Nine pts started systemic therapy, and the median time of the primary endpoint was 39.7 months (CI 12.20-62.14 months). No grade 3 or 4 toxicity was recorded. Conclusions: Repeated salvage [18F]FMCHPET/CT-guided SBRT is well tolerated and could defer the beginning of systemic therapy in selected patients with oligometastatic PCa.

Abstract

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancies and main causes of cancer death in Western countries. In the presence of metastatic disease, systemic treatment remains the main clinical option. However, since the introduction of highly sensitive imaging techniques, a new clinical 'entity' of metastatic patients with a limited number of lesions has been defined: oligometastatic patients. In this patient group, the use of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) or other local therapies against all active sites of disease revealed by 18F-choline positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) could achieve sufficient prostate-specific antigen (PSA) control. However, a clear benefit of this procedure in terms of significant endpoints is yet to be demonstrated. This case report describes our experience with treating a castration-resistant PCa patient with 18F-choline PET/CT-guided SBRT. Because of the occurrence of 5 metachronous lesions over 4 years, the pattern of recurrence was defined by the local multidisciplinary team as oligometastatic disease, and the patient was treated with 5 courses of SBRT which yielded good PSA control. He started systemic therapy with abiraterone acetate almost 5 years after the diagnosis of recurrent PCa.

The Externally-Fired Gas-Turbine (EFGT) technology represents a promising solution for the decentralized use of solid biomass in the power generation. In order to investigate the operating flexibility and the effects of the fuel quality on the operating parameters, EnelIngegneria e Ricerca carried out a detailed long-term experimental characterization of a 70-kWe EFGT power plant with four different biomass fuels: high-quality wood chips, olive kernel, chips of urban green waste, chips of giant reed (Arundodonax L.).For each tested fuel, a large number of operating parameters were monitored, included: main pollutant emissions, concentration of the acidic gases HCl and HF, fine-particulate concentration and size-distribution. Part of the experimental activity were also in­flame measurements of temperature and chemistry as well as laboratory analyses of fuels and ash, included SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy-Dispersive X-ray) spectroscopy of the fine particulate.A proper process simulation performed in Aspen Plus®allowed the validation of the experimental data and the calculation of heat and mass balances.The experimental activity was also significant in highlighting the main operational issues. Initial work in the OnCord project has started. A Kick-off meeting was held and all partners had the opportunity to introduce themselves and to discuss their role in the project. The project website was set up, and a data-sharing system provided to enhance communication among the partners. The requirements for common test fuels, i.e. coals, biomass and SRF materials and a database of fuel properties were agreed. The arrangements for the procurement and distribution of the fuel samples were planned. The analysis and initial testing of some of the fuels has been done and the data are available to partners. The requirements for online corrosion sensors and other instrumentation (flue gas analysis, online particle measurement system, deposit probes etc.) were discussed. The relevant test materials to be mounted on the corrosion sensors and material loss probes have also been discussed. The small-scale test facilities are being prepared for the experiments planned in the first part of the project, and the initial steps of planning for the subsequent larger scale tests has commenced. Boundary conditions, geometric data and model parameters have been collected for modelling of the pulverized fuel systems. Initial discussions were held on the modelling activities on the circulating fluidized bed site of the project. The identification of the host sites for the plant scale testwork has commenced, and discussions are being held with the site operators. The new partner Bilfinger (Babcock Borsig Steinmueller, BBS) has been integrated in the project and will take over the part of Corrmoran (Corr).

Abstract

The purpose of the project was to evaluate traffic-calming treatments on major roads through small Italian communities using either single-measure, low-cost or gateway treatments. For this portion of the project, gateway traffic-calming treatments were evaluated in Giffoni Sei Casali, Salerno. The main street through many small rural Italian communities is a state or local highway with high speeds outside the city limits and a reduced speed section through the rural community. Consequently, drivers passing through the community often enter at high speeds and then maintain those speeds throughout. When speeds in rural communities are problematic, traffic calming provides a potential solution. However, trafficcalming measures are generally used in larger urban areas; their effectiveness in small communities is unknown. Speeds decreased at all of the data-collection locations and decreases remained constant over the data collection period. Many rural communities do not have the resources to implement high-cost, elaborate traffic-calming measures. The measures used in Giffoni Sei Casali were low cost and simply involved painting the roadway and new signs. The traffic-calming treatments in Giffoni Sei Casali, Salerno could easily be implemented in other rural communities. Keywords

The feeding of biomass shares to coal­fired power plants is widely recognized as a relatively efficient solution for the power generation in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions with contained capital costs. The biomass pre­treatment by means of torrefaction can even increase the advantages of the co­firing technology providing a fuel with increased heating value, reduced specific volume, improved grindability. In order to evaluate the effects of torrefied biomass shares in coal power plants in terms of combustion efficiency, fouling tendency and conventional pollutant emissions, Enel Ingegneria e Ricerca (Enel E&R) and the International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF) carried out an experimental campaign on a 500­kWt pilot­scale furnace located in the Enel E&R Experimental Area in Leghorn (Italy). Biomass thermal shares up to 27% were tested with different oxygen excesses. The combustion chamber temperature and the fouling tendency were respectively measured by means of a pyrometer developed by IFRF and a probe developed by Enel E&R. Abstract

Coal combustion is investigated in both air and oxy-fuel conditions in a pilot-scale entrained flow reactor able to provide high temperatures, heating rates and residence times. Measurements are carried out with different levels of complexity and are aimed at: assessing the thermal field inside the reactor; evaluating conversions of devolatilization or char combustion tests; identifying phenomena such as volatiles ignition and measuring the ignition delay time. Computational Fluid Dynamics was also used in order to provide a better understanding of the experimental evidences. Among the results, the ignition delay time was found to be larger in oxy-fuel conditions than in air, mainly because of the larger specific heat of the oxy-fuel environment. The proposed investigation may help the qualification of advanced experimental apparatus as entrained flow reactors, with the purpose to make them suitable for heterogeneous kinetics studies in oxy-fuel conditions.
