The complete genome sequence of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) was discovered from a rainbow bee-eater ( Merops ornatus ), a species of Coraciiformes . The genome consisted of 1,996 bp encoding two major bidirectional transcribed open reading frames. This is the first evidence of BFDV infection and complete genome characterization for this novel host species.

Forty-one belted kingfishers, Megaceryle alcyon (Linnaeus) (Aves: Coraciiformes: Alcedinidae), from Manitoba, Canada were examined for ectoparasites in 1995–2020. One species of chewing louse, Alcedoffula alcyonae Carriker (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Philopteridae), infested 48.8% of hosts. The mean intensity of infestation was 17.1, and mean abundance was 8.5 lice per bird. Distribution of infestation was highly aggregated. Although female lice outnumbered males, the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1.0. The ratio of nymphs to females was 2.6. An unidentified species of feather mite of the genus Proterothrix Gaud (Acari: Astigmatina: Proctophyllodidae) infested three of 35 hosts (8.6%). No mites were found in the quills of primary feathers from 19 birds, and no nasal mites were collected from 32.

The comparative study of ontogeny and morphological structures of quill mite infrapopulations of a newly described species Peristerophila hirundineus sp. nov. from Merops hirundineus (Coraciiformes: Meropidae), collected in Namibia, D.R. Congo, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania, shows evidence of female dimorphism in the genus Peristerophila Kethley, 1970. This proves that females of quill mite species referred to the genus Peristerophila are homeomorph forms, while those referred to the genus Castosyringophilus Bochkov and Perez, 2003 are heteromorph ones. Therefore, the genus Castosyringophilus syn. nov. is synonymized herein with the genus Peristerophila. The following new combinations for mite species formerly referred to Castosyringophilus are proposed: Peristerophila forpi (Bochkov and Perez, 2002) comb. nov., P. claravis (Skoracki and Glowska 2008) comb. nov., and P. meropis (Skoracki, Hromada and Sikora, 2017) comb. nov. The possible evolutionary sense of the female dimorphism in syringophilid mites is discussed.

The genus Nonnula (Galbuliformes: Bucconidae) includes 6 species of nunlets, understory insectivores of humid Neotropical forest. Like the rest of their lineage (Galbuliformes, Piciformes, Coraciiformes, Bucerotiformes, Trogoniformes, and Leptosomiformes), Nonnula were speculated to nest in cavities or burrows, either underground, in mounds of leaf litter, in trees, or in arboreal termitaria. From 2014 to 2020 we studied 17 nests of Rusty-breasted Nunlet (Nonnula rubecula) at Cruce Caballero Provincial Park in the Atlantic Forest of Misiones, Argentina. From the outside, nests looked like the burrows excavated by relatives in Malacoptila, but nunlets excavated only the floor, carpeted it with leaves, built a roof frame of twigs and rachises, and finally covered the whole structure with leaf litter from the surrounding area. A clutch of 4 (occasionally 3) white eggs with mean dimensions 20.1 (SD 0.8) × 16.8 (SD 0.3) mm (2.8 [SD 0.3] g; n = 5) was laid on alternate days, and incubated 17–18 d. The pink, naked hatchlings, with eyes sealed shut, scrambled around the nest chamber and came to the tunnel entrance by day 3, similar to other Bucconidae. Two secretive adults incubated, brooded, and fed nestlings. Fledglings hopped out of the nest at 17–19 d, sometimes returned before leaving definitively, and apparently could not fly. The probability of a nest surviving the 42 d from laying to fledging was 0.40, comparable to some tree-cavity-nesting birds in our study area (but 95% confidence intervals were large: 0.11–0.69). There is no evidence that any Nonnula use tree cavities or excavate burrows. We propose that Nonnula are unique in their lineage in building a dome-shaped nest at ground level. This habit may have evolved from relatives that excavate underground burrows, surround the entrance with a collar of twigs, and cover the excavation site with leaf litter.

Investigation of the diversity and taxonomy of feather mites of the subfamily Pterodectinae (Astigmata: Proctophyllodidae) on passerines (Passeriformes) and kingfishers (Coraciiformes: Alcedinidae) in Manitoba revealed 19 species in 5 genera. Of them, eight new species are described, seven of these from passerines and one from a kingfisher: Alaudicola eremophila sp. n. from Eremophila alpestris (Alaudidae), Amerodectes icteri sp. n. from Icterus galbula (Icteridae), A. pheucticus sp. n. from Pheucticus ludovicianus (Cardinalidae), A. tiffanyluiae sp. n. from Oporornis agilis (Parulidae), A. tretiakae sp. n. from Molothrus ater (Icteridae), Tyrannidectes sealyi sp. n. from Tyrannus tyrannus (Linnaeus, 1758) (type host) and Tyrannus verticalis Say, and T. empidonicus sp. n. from Empidonax minimus (Tyrannidae), and Proterothrix megaceryle sp. n. from Megaceryle alcyon (Alcedinidae). Additionally, nine pterodectine species are reported for the first time in the fauna of Canada. Based on re-evaluation of diagnostic charcters, new diagnoses are proposed for the genera Amerodectes, Tyrannidectes, and Metapterodectes, and species contents of these genera are revised. Four species are transferred from the genus Amerodectes to Tyrannidectes with the new combinations proposed: T. caribaeus (Mironov and González-Acuña, 2011) comb. n., T. charitomenos (Hernandes, 2018) comb. n., T. pitangi (Mironov, 2008) comb. n., T. vireonis (Hernandes and Pedroso, 2016) comb. n. Six species are transferred from the genus Tyrannidectes to Metapterodectes with the new combinations: M. amaurochalinus (Hernandes and Valim, 2006) comb. n., M. cinclodes (Mironov and González-Acuña, 2011) comb. n., M. crassus (Trouessart, 1885) comb. n., M. falcklandicus (Mironov and González-Acuña, 2011) comb. n., M. fissuratus (Hernandes and Valim, 2005) comb. n., and M. pteroptochi (Mironov and González-Acuña, 2015) comb. n.

Fragmentos urbanos têm se tornado verdadeiros refúgios para animais e plantas que buscam nessas áreas com recursos para a sua sobrevivência apresentando, sobretudo, uma grande importância para a conservação de aves que necessitam de um espaço mínimo para encontrar abrigo, alimento, locais propícios para nidificar e outros indivíduos da mesma espécie para reproduzir. Nesse sentido, o estudo teve como objetivo elaborar uma lista das espécies de aves registradas em um fragmento urbano da Zona da Mata Mineira, assim como avaliar a flutuação de aves aquáticas durante um período de obras no local. Em seis anos de coleta, que foram divididos entre antes, durante e após a obra, foram registradas 160 espécies de aves, com seis espécies novas para a região. Houve variação na riqueza de espécies de aves associadas a ambientes aquáticos durante o estudo e o desaparecimento de Coraciiformes. Os resultados confirmaram o potencial de fragmentos urbanos em abrigar espécies de aves ameaçadas e que vêm enfrentando dificuldades em manter suas populações.
