The present study analysed digital literacy issues encountered by elementary school teachers in remote classrooms due to COVID-19. The study sought to derive a plan for cultivating teachers' digital literacy to support students' distance education. To this end, focus group interviews were conducted with five elementary school teachers in charge of upper grades, the results were analysed, and strategies to improve teacher digital literacy were derived. Specifically, three main areas of teacher digital literacy were identified for improvement. The first was providing training to use digital devices and online platforms, develop online content, and strengthen copyright understanding. The second was providing professional development programs to train digital teaching methods or pedagogies by level and by subject characteristics. The third was activating online and offline platforms for information sharing among teachers and establish a digital teaching support system. This study will be of value to teachers and school administrations in preparing for distance education in the era of digital transformation because it presents measures to foster teachers' digital literacy required by future society.

This paper explores recent advancements and implications of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with a specific focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT 3.5, within the realm of higher education. Through a comprehensive review of the academic literature, this paper highlights the unprecedented growth of these models and their widereaching impact across various sectors. The discussion sheds light on the complex issues and potential benefits presented by LLMs, providing a comprehensive overview of the field's current state. In the context of higher education, the paper explores the challenges and opportunities posed by LLMs. These include issues related to educational assessment, potential threats to academic integrity, privacy concerns, the propagation of misinformation, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) aspects, copyright concerns and inherent biases within the models. While these challenges are multifaceted and significant, the paper emphasises the availability of strategies to address them effectively and facilitate the successful adoption of LLMs in educational settings. Furthermore, the paper recognises the potential opportunities to transform higher education. It emphasises the need to update assessment policies, develop guidelines for staff and students, scaffold AI skills development, and find ways to leverage technology in the classroom. By proactively pursuing these steps, higher education institutions (HEIs) can harness the full potential of LLMs while managing their adoption responsibly. In conclusion, the paper urges HEIs to allocate appropriate resources to handle the adoption of LLMs effectively. This includes ensuring staff AI readiness and taking steps to modify their study programmes to align with the evolving educational landscape influenced by emerging technologies.

Hollywood screenwriters worry about Artificial Intelligence (AI) replacements taking over their jobs. Famous museums litigate to protect their art from AI infringement. A major retailer scraps a machine-learning based recruitment program that was biased against women. These are just a few examples of how AI is affecting the world of work, learning, and living. MIS and computer science students are among the professional groups who are embarking into careers with nebulous frontiers obscured by the outcroppings brought on by AI. Computer Science and Information System curriculum task forces have recognized the increasing ethical and professional implications developers' work can have beyond the scope of the programmers' code. In this article, the authors examine the professional, legal, and ethical implications of copyrights and algorithmic bias resulting from development of AI-enhanced applications and offer suggestions for addressing these topics in courses considering changes to the CC2020 and IS2020 Model Curriculum frameworks.

This study investigates how instructors consider resource cost and availability when compiling assignments in their course syllabi. It uses the academic planning model from Lattuca and Stark to frame the influences on instructional material selection. It employs a critical incident technique method, asking instructors to take into account one course syllabus when making assignments. Findings address differences across formats including books, chapters, articles, and video. Findings show differences between disciplines and concerning lack of familiarity with fair use. It concludes that increased consultation with library personnel regarding course books would help provide students with affordable materials in compliance with fair use.

Access to youth culture by adolescents has changed as new communication technologies have found new ways of offering media content to viewers. Adolescents today access more content more frequently. However, the greater their exposure, the higher the likelihood of this leading to risk behaviors such as access to pornography, plagiarism, piracy and copyright violation. The aim of the present study is, therefore, to determine the frequency of these risk behaviors linked to the Internet content accessed and downloaded by minors, analyzing this variable in accordance with gender, age and context (Spain, Italy and Greece). We analyzed the responses provided by 2,529 adolescents (1,264 girls/1,262 boys) aged between 10 and 17 years from Spain, Italy and Greece. In general, adolescent boys, especially those aged 16 and 17 years, reported engaging more frequently in risk behaviors, particularly in reference to accessing youth culture content. Likewise, in terms of context, the highest means were observed among participants from Attica (Greece) and the Madrid Region (Spain), whereas the lowest means were observed in the Marche Region (Italy) and Navarre (Spain). The results revealed statistically significant differences in terms of gender, age and context. Thereby, they highlight the importance of focusing on media education from a gender perspective.

This case study describes how two librarians transformed an international information literacy course by creating a scaffolded open pedagogy experience for students to build transferable skills while exploring how information is produced, disseminated, and interpreted across the world. The authors discuss how we collaborated on the project to incorporate open pedagogy, tools, and strategies to enhance learning. The result was a scaffolded course using open pedagogy to help students engage with global information issues. Using Pressbooks, students published multimedia content exploring topics including global news media, censorship, misinformation, and digital divides. Then students chose to either openly license their work, share it publicly while retaining their copyright, or hide it from public view. Additionally, students used Hypothesis to socially annotate reading assignments outside of class. We reflect on our experience revising this course, what worked and what did not, and how we will adapt the course in the future.

This case study describes how the authors incorporated the principles and practices of open pedagogy into a three-credit Honors College course focused on information literacy and undergraduate research. It included using literature review sources to help edit Wikipedia articles, registering a research project proposal with the Open Science Framework (OSF), and the creation of an openly licensed toolkit crowdsourced with students' tips and suggested resources for other students new to research. Students demonstrated improved understanding of several information literacy concepts, such as the role of copyright. The use and benefits of open pedagogy were, however, hindered by unrelated classroom issues, like low enrollment and, at times, a lack of student engagement. Nevertheless, the authors' general approach and the activities and assignments they developed could be adapted and used in other library instruction contexts.

Without interrogation, educators may reproduce hegemonic materials and learning opportunities that are simply easier to access in open educational practices (OEP). Thus, we argue that to effectively engage in OEP, educators must not only possess knowledge, skills and dispositions related to their discipline, but also related to open education, CC licensing, open pedagogy, digital tools that facilitate OEP, and intentionality and care in negotiating openness with students. While there are various frameworks for open education, none have been applied to explain what knowledge, skills and dispositions are needed to engage in OEP. In this manuscript, we seek to conceptualise and provide examples of OEP within the Technological, Pedagogical, Content Knowledge Framework (TPACK) through the intersections of content, technology, and pedagogy with equity, intentionality, and care at the forefront.

In recent years there have been several studies reviewing the benefits and challenges of open pedagogy projects for student engagement and learning. This study adds to that literature by reporting on a survey of students who wrote case studies in three courses in forestry and conservation studies, most of whom agreed to publish publicly and with a Creative Commons license. Our results indicate that many students felt more motivated and engaged in the open pedagogy assignments compared to traditional assignments. Many also reported putting more effort into their assignment to ensure its accuracy and usefulness to others. In addition to improved understanding of copyright and citation practices, students learned how to translate knowledge for a broader audience and demonstrated an increased awareness of scholarly integrity. Still, a number of students reported increased stress with this assignment. We conclude with some recommendations to support students in such projects while reducing stress.

The concept 'literacy crisis' has framed ChatGPT's popularity, its rapid evolution, and its seemingly sophisticated language and knowledge performance. The concept helps scholars and teachers easily enter conversations about artificial intelligence (AI) text generation technologies and how they transform the notions of authorship, research, labor, copyright, and writing. Antonio Byrd uses the literacy crisis as a starting point in this essay but in the opposite direction. By responding to literacy crises with a back-to-basics pedagogy, composition studies has participated in histories of linguistic punishment that have shaped how writers produce, edit, and publish texts; these punishments create the presence of power and ideology in the corpus texts large language models (LLMs) use for training. While learning new literacy practices and teaching strategies with LLMs, there is also the responsibility for participating in the creation of the next iteration of public data that contain contemporary ideologies on language and culture. AI and writing involve critical inquiry on relationships with these corpus texts. Integrating this critical inquiry may maximize students' writing practices with AI and extend their rhetorical awareness of what's at stake when they go public with their writing to participate in cultural and political conversations.

This study explored high school students' perceptions of using AI chatbots in English learning. Specifically, it aimed to gauge the breadth of chatbot utilization and discern perceptions surrounding potential challenges linked to their use. Thirty students from a high school took part in the survey. Data analysis involved frequency, mean and an independent sample t-test. The findings are as follows. First, students recognized the importance and value of chatbots highly and perceived their usability positively. However, their previous experience with chatbots did not sway this perception. Second, students perceived using chatbots in English learning as very beneficial. Especially, those with chatbot usage experience have a more positive perception compared to those without experience. Third, students were relatively aware of potential ethical issues with using chatbots. They were particularly concerned about plagiarism and copyright issues and potential personal information breaches regardless of their experience with chatbots. They also perceived potential educational issues, fearing over-reliance on chatbots might hinder their exploratory learning or lead to copying assignments directly, missing out on learning opportunities. However, those without experience were more skeptical than those with experience. The implications and suggestions derived from these findings are also discussed.

This article attempts to comprehend the current issues and hurdles that Indian colleges affiliated with Tamil Nadu State Universities encounter when trying to subscribe to a software that detects plagiarism. The study's goals are to determine whether colleges employ anti-plagiarism software, whether they ensure that their student-given assignments are free of copyright infringement, whether tutors teach about academic misconduct, and what people seem to think of anti-plagiarism software. We surveyed for this study and distributed the questionnaires among college administrators, principals, and librarians. The study respondents are 15.9 per cent principals, 64.2 per cent library professionals, and 19.9 per cent college administrators. The survey study report shows that 70.9 per cent of the majority of the colleges did not subscribe. 41.7 per cent gave the reason it is too expensive, and 30.5 per cent of respondents thought that for their college, it is unnecessary to subscribe. However, nobody has confirmed whether or not all colleges possess access to plagiarism detection software. Thus, according to this investigation, further Indian states must be involved in this research to understand the specific context fully. This report advises the UGC to enforce the requirement that colleges have plagiarism detection software; they either provide colleges additional money to subscribe to such software, or the university must grant free access to the affiliated colleges.

According to the author, we are all creators and consumers of media. Technology has made it easy to copy, paste, and transfer anything educators might want to use in their classrooms. As educators, school librarians have an obligation to honor the law and be the role models that learners and other staff members need them to be. So many times the author has heard "Fair use covers me," or "Because I'm a teacher, I'm fine." The author states they were once guilty of this themselves. If educators expect learners to respect and follow copyright rules, they must follow them as well. In most states, the library media specialist degree is one of the only graduate degrees that requires a class on copyright and intellectual property. The author states it is vital to be transparent about one's qualifications and to make it clear that any information provided is based on personal understanding and experiences, rather than professional legal advice. Fair use is a wonderful thing, however it does not provide carte blanche to everything in education. According to the author, this is probably the biggest misconception among educators. Fair use has a four-factor test that one can use in determining if a copyrighted work can be used without permission. These factors are applied on a case-by-case basis, and fair use determinations can vary depending on the specific circumstances of each use. This is a great tool to teach both learners and staff. Fair use is a flexible and context-dependent doctrine. There is no fixed percentage or word count that can be universally considered fair use in all situations. Most of the time, as the author states, we think of copyright as being a standard school librarians teach learners. It is, but if librarians also lead by partnering and supporting classroom teachers, school librarians could build a stronger knowledge of copyright with learners. Librarians should be seen as a resource for both learners and staff. School librarians may not always be able to provide professional development, so be creative on how to send out information. Advocating for copyright does not mean school librarians need to be an expert, but it is essential to promote a fair and balanced approach that respects both creators and consumers.

Text and data mining activities -- that is, the automated processing of digital materials to uncover new knowledge -- have become more frequent in all areas of scientific research. Because they require a massive use of copyrighted work, there are evident conflicts with copyright legislation. Countries at the forefront of research and development have begun to address this issue. This paper presents the basic aspects of legislation applicable to text and data mining activities. It offers a detailed comparative analysis of the norms of the main jurisdictions that have regulated them to date, highlighting in each case the positive and negative aspects. An adequate knowledge of these laws is not only important for researchers but also important for the academic librarians who provide advice and support in these matters.

Fulfilling requests for media content in support of classroom and faculty research activities is demanding for academic libraries. Libraries strive to meet requests for media while working with challenges such as intellectual property license contracts, advances in digital communication technologies and copyright issues. This article provides an in-depth look at the changing demands of collections and services in addressing faculty requests for media, and outlines both a collection and a service strategy developed by librarians at the University of South Florida Libraries to provide faculty and students with access to diverse media titles in formats ranging from physical to streaming.

In 2018, the University of Winnipeg Library introduced the Syllabus Service to improve the course reserves submission process. This initiative has allowed library staff to proactively support copyright in e-reserves and provided opportunities to improve accessibility for students. The service has also encouraged faculty and instructor use of course reserves by reducing the time and effort required to submit requests, and has eased the workload of reserves staff by leveraging the expertise of the Copyright Office.

The growth and competitiveness of any business, especially micro and SMEs, will increasingly depend on the ability to apply new knowledge, organisation and working methods, as well as the capacity to engage in the commercialisation of research and development to develop new products, services, or processes. In the information society, the development of new products, services, and processes requires the use of innovations resulting from the intellectual activity of creative people. For creators and successors in title of intellectual property rights (various projects, trademarks, inventions, computer programs, etc.) to be able to successfully develop and market their products, they need a functioning IPR protection system. The research found that it is essential for the company to acquire the rights to the works created during the employment contract, and it would be necessary to reasonably limit the author's right to withdraw the work created during the employment relationship.

This study examined the policies and instructional practices related to academic integrity and copyright literacy in K-12 schools through the lens of school library professionals. Since school librarians play a key role in promoting academic integrity and copyright literacy in schools, they were chosen. An online survey was administered to school library professionals in 85 countries using a mixed methods approach, yielding 569 responses. The results revealed that many K-12 schools lack policies on academic integrity and copyright, and there is variability in the perceived value, implementation and teaching of these literacies. While most school library professionals reported teaching academic integrity and copyright literacy in their schools, implementing effective pedagogies remains challenging. Collaboration between school library professionals and teachers, along with the use of multimedia resources, were identified as potential strategies for practical education and instruction. The study highlights the need for greater attention to be given to these literacies in K-12 education and calls for the development of policies, necessary support and effective teaching methods to ensure students are knowledgeable and well-prepared for higher education.

New technological developments, such as 5G networks, smart and interconnected devices, and the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), lead to a new reality in which the secure flow of data is non-negotiable. In this new reality, blockchain technology can play a crucial role, as it has the ability to provide the necessary background for the safe and inviolable operation of systems. Blockchain is a distributed ledger, in which information and data are stored and verified. These blocks of data do not have to be related to financial transactions but may concern any other type of data that needs to be securely recorded and not changed retrospectively. Although the first application of blockchain technology was about digital currency (Bitcoin), its usefulness is not limited to cryptocurrencies or the field of economics. Blockchain, especially in its last stage v3.0, has many applications in various sectors such as data storage, certification of products and services, government, insurance, health, science, and education. This paper focuses on the current and potential educational applications of blockchain and presents how this technology can be used to solve specific education problems. Nowadays, a variety of blockchain applications concerning the issue and storage of certificates and diplomas, the evaluation of learning outcomes, the support and the academic degree management, the protection of intellectual property, the cooperation between students and their professors, learning accreditation, payment for studies, formation of an academic passport (portfolio) or administration of the educational process are implemented in some HEI and institutions. The paper analyzes the features and advantages of blockchain technology, presents some of the current blockchain applications for education, as well as the benefits and challenges of using blockchain technology in the educational sector. Finally, special reference is made to applications related to the field of language learning.

The worldwide use of open educational resources (OER) has highly increased during the recent years. However, there is no clear idea about how these resources are utilized by teachers in Lebanon. Hence, this study aims at examining the extent to which the concept of OER is well known among the teachers. It also investigates the practices of OER users and explores the barriers to powerful use and sharing of OER among teachers. Nevertheless, this is quantitative research designed for analyzing the data collected from 308 teachers through an online questionnaire. The results showed that 60% of the respondents have heard about OER. Moreover, they revealed that OER users showed misunderstanding of the concept of OER due to their lack of knowledge about the open licenses. Hence, a national policy for e-learning is needed to leverage open education and ignite the power of OER by encouraging teachers to be producers of knowledge.

This paper offers overarching insights into the benefits and drawbacks of Open Educational Resources (OER) for learning communities. A semi-systematic literature review (SSLR) is used as a research approach. Data is gathered from research articles, books, and other published work, and analyzed using thematic analysis. OER and Open Educational Practices (OEP) have the potential to support sustainable educational practices, but these have not yet reached their capacities to benefit wider learning communities. It is not yet known if the global academia is prepared towards embracing OEP due to limited pieces of evidence. OE policies have been successfully adopted by a few countries, but others have failed to accept open policies due to a lack of a supportive environment. MOOCs have benefitted the academic community in many ways, but openness, equality, lifelong learning, and liberation remain major challenges. A vast number of open repositories offer free resources, but learners and teachers have been unsuccessful to develop quality learning resources due to a lack of capacity to adapt and re-use OER. Documentary evidence confirms the use of digital licenses by global learning communities, but lack of awareness, incompatibility of Creative Commons (CC) with the traditional copyright laws, and lack of uniform global policy framework have deterred OEP. The strategic implementation model of OER can potentially accelerate communities of practices in academia through capacity building for the recreation of knowledge.

The introduction of open educational resources (OER) provides new opportunities for learners worldwide to access high-quality educational materials at the lowest cost. As a developing country, Vietnam is one of the countries that can most benefit from the OER movement. However, the concept of OER in Vietnam remains little known to the public, with few institutional OER repositories (IOER) developed. This study contends that IOER development in Vietnam is complicated and constrained by many contextual difficulties; it was designed to explore the challenges and opportunities. After a literature review, 20 semi-structured interviews were conducted with relevant stakeholders. Building on the findings from the literature, this study found that IOER development in Vietnam is constrained by five categories of challenges: (a) technological and infrastructure matters, (b) economic constraints, (c) sociocultural characteristics, (d) pedagogical concerns, and (e) legal limitations. Many of these challenges are not identified in the literature and provide insights into potential implications and solutions for future IOER in Vietnam and other countries.

Author contracts in scholarly publishing serve to outline the rights and permissions for each party in the use and redistribution of a work throughout the life of its copyright term. Although rights and licensing expectations for open access publishing--the "open access ethos"--have been detailed in the Budapest Declaration, Plan S Principles, and other documentation, studies that explore the implementation of these ideals in contracts between authors and publishers have been limited in focus and scope. This study seeks to initiate a holistic approach toward evaluating open access journal agreements that is not limited by region or discipline, with the aim of discerning best practices as well as delineating common points of deviation. The authors distributed a survey to contacts from journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), including both journals with and without a DOAJ Seal. The results suggest that DOAJ Seal status is central to alignment with the open access ethos and that there is more misunderstanding about the importance of copyright and licensing terms than shown in previous research. This research contributes to discussions pursuing a future of open access publishing that supports authors' rights as a central tenet.

In European universities, teaching ethics has acquired special relevance with the Bologna Process and changes in curriculum. In Spain, the White Book of the Degree in Information and Documentation incorporates ethics as a specific competence, through the combination of ethical, social, and legal content, as a transversal competence. In this context, this study aimed to detect whether changes in attitude toward ethical values occur in a group of LIS students as a consequence of the training received and to test a qualitative approach to identify these changes. A questionnaire based on the vignette technique was used, presenting students with cases of conflict or ethical dilemmas, in most cases in the context of an information unit. For each vignette, they were asked to assess the performance of the information professional and to explain what they would have done if they were in their place, before and after they received the training. The results obtained showed that the attitude of the students who received training changed from individual ethics to professional ethics. We can consider that the content used for the training was correct, although the knowledge about the different ethical theories and ethical reasoning models for decision making should have been deepened. To the theoretical content, we must add a teaching methodology based on the effective study of cases and scenarios in our work. On the other hand, the application of the vignette technique and content analysis as a methodological approach to the students' discourse is very useful, since it was decisive in identifying the reasons that helped the students make a certain decision, before and after the training session, for checking to see whether this decision was made following their individual ethics or guided by normative ethics, and for knowing the degree of acceptance and depth of the training session.

The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential in the field of education. The study explores three main areas: (1) How did ChatGPT answer questions related to science education? (2) What are some ways educators could utilise ChatGPT in their science pedagogy? and (3) How has ChatGPT been utilised in this study, and what are my reflections about its use as a research tool? This exploratory research applies a self-study methodology to investigate the technology. Impressively, ChatGPT's output often aligned with key themes in the research. However, as it currently stands, ChatGPT runs the risk of positioning itself as the ultimate epistemic authority, where a single truth is assumed without a proper grounding in evidence or presented with sufficient qualifications. Key ethical concerns associated with AI include its potential environmental impact, issues related to content moderation, and the risk of copyright infringement. It is important for educators to model responsible use of ChatGPT, prioritise critical thinking, and be clear about expectations. ChatGPT is likely to be a useful tool for educators designing science units, rubrics, and quizzes. Educators should critically evaluate any AI-generated resource and adapt it to their specific teaching contexts. ChatGPT was used as a research tool for assistance with editing and to experiment with making the research narrative clearer. The intention of the paper is to act as a catalyst for a broader conversation about the use of generative AI in science education.

This project report describes a playful approach to teaching copyright through a newly developed game entitled Copyright Dough. As copyright literacy has become increasingly important in scholarly communication, this paper explores how a more engaging teaching method is essential for getting researchers, students, academics, and library staff to feel comfortable and confident in discussing copyright, a topic that is often met with anxiety. Drawing upon the existing literature on play, games, and active learning, this paper highlights how incorporating these concepts together can lead to a welcoming and safe space, bringing open and honest discussion. In achieving these goals, it is shown that not only is engagement with copyright increased, but learning objectives are also achieved in a meaningful and memorable way.

It is thought that the compulsory distance education (Covid-19 pandemic) process may have some advantages as well as some disadvantages for learners and teachers. From this point of view, the present study is designed to investigate the technology integration levels of the pre-service teachers and the effect of the compulsory distance education process on the technology integration levels. The explanatory design, which is one of the mixed method research types in which quantitative and qualitative data are used together, was used in the study. The quantitative dimension of the research is an example of the survey study, which was planned and conducted by the single survey model. In the qualitative dimension, the views of pre-service teachers about the effect of the compulsory distance education process on technology integration levels were analysed through the interview technique. A total of 414 students of the Faculty of Education were included in the study through convenience sampling. In the study, "Indicators for Teachers' Technology Integration (TEG) Scale", "Personal Information Form", and "Semi-Structured Interview Form" were used as data collection tools. The data were analysed by the SPSS program and the level of significance was accepted as 0.05. According to the results of the research, the technology integration levels of the pre-service teachers in the compulsory distance education process were found to be high. Furthermore, it was found that the compulsory distance education process has a catalytic effect on pre-service teachers' technology integration levels.

Purpose: The present study aims to develop a scale based on the Graded Response Model, one of the Item Response Theory models to determine university students' attitudes towards pirated content. Most of the data collection tools on attitudes towards piracy and pirated content have not been developed as a scale, and an attitude scale towards pirated content based on Item Response Theory (IRT) does not exist in the literature. Research Methods: In accordance with this purpose, the data collected from 438 university students studying at two public universities were used in this study. First, the estimation of the Item Response Theory was tested, and then item parameters were estimated according to the Graded Response Model by analyzing the item-model compatibility. Findings: The findings obtained in this study showed that a 17-item Likert-type unidimensional scale was developed based on the Graded Response Model to determine the university students' attitudes towards pirated content. Upon the analysis of the information function of the scale, the findings showed that the scale provided more information for individuals between trait levels -1.5 and 1.5 and that the scale provided a very reliable measurement for the individuals with trait levels -2 and 3. Moreover, the scale showed measurement invariance and DIF-free according to gender. Implications for Research and Practice: Using this scale in further studies on pirated content, group-independent measurement results can be obtained. Furthermore, through studies, such as differential item functioning (DIF) and computerized adaptive testing (CAT), the practicality of the scale can be increased.

This paper focuses on the ways educators can work within the guidelines of copyright while using digital media to develop educational content in legal and ethical ways by exploring several key contemporary trends in digital content creation. Educators need not create learning materials from scratch, as the pool of resources available via the internet, from educational publishers, or physically stored within schools serve as resources for the development of contextually relevant learning materials. Educators are increasingly becoming content creators, and with the development of digital literacies to support content creation, they can combine resources from multiple sources to meet the needs of their learners. This may be done to ensure a lesson is current, meet the needs of differentiated instruction and universal design for learning, to design learning materials that are engaging, and those that can be shared widely. In this digital media landscape, it is important for educators to know how to navigate digital media for use in developing curriculum or learning materials. By drawing on the digital literacies associated with copyright and open educational practices, educators can work within the guidelines of fair use, link and embed content, recognize and use openly licensed content, and explore resources from the public domain in legal and technically appropriate ways while developing learning materials. These approaches may impact educators' design processes, while also demonstrating and modelling to learners the creative ways one can remix and share resources found on the web.

The digital transformation of knowledge dissemination and academic publishing have sparked copyright disputes in the educational sector related to the scope of fair dealing. This study contributes (a) an empirical basis for such discussions by analyzing 3,391 course syllabuses (2015-2020) from 34 Canadian universities, and (b) a potential resolution to the disputes to which this analysis is applied. Among the reading types, 26.6% of the syllabuses had readings from academic sources, while 8.3% of the syllabuses had media articles and trade book chapters (with some overlap). The syllabus data are used to calculate a per-page royalty charge, which is used to demonstrate a proposed three-step syllabus rule to avoid double-charging students for academic materials (amounting to 90.1% of readings by pages), while fairly compensating professional authors and their publishers (9.9% of readings by pages). The three-step syllabus rule provides a sound rationale for charging each student $1.40 per year to cover royalty charges for readings assigned in Canadian university courses.

Orphan works are works that are still protected by copyright and whose owners cannot be identified or located by prospective users for copyright clearance. Many countries have addressed this issue since the emergence of the problem, and it remains a legitimate subject of inquiry in this present day. However, Malaysia is yet to initiate public consultations and formulate legislative and non-legislative solutions to the orphan work problem. Hence, this paper aspires to underline the challenges and obstacles in exploiting the orphan works in Malaysia. It starts with a brief introduction to the orphan works problem and its causes. It further highlights the legal and policy uncertainties about the orphan work phenomenon in Malaysia and its implication to higher learning education. Besides, this paper also examines the current practices in the United Kingdom and Canada. Finally, this paper proposes some suggestions into what Parliament and policymakers have to do and avoid when solving Malaysia's orphan work phenomenon. It is hoped that the access to the orphan works in Malaysia would not be problematised, thereby liberating them from the copyright orphanage.

During (and after) the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic, educational communities have employed distance education to reach their students. However, not all districts are aware of the legal requirements of using instructional materials in a virtual setting. In recognition of the growth of virtual learning environments, Congress passed the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act in 2002 with the goal of redefining the circumstances and rules under which nonprofit and educational institutions might digitally use copyright protected materials. For districts exploring or expanding opportunities in distance education, understanding the laws that pertain to the use of digital, copyrighted materials is of critical importance. This article explores and explains these requirements for policymakers, site and district leadership, and classroom instructors.

Multimedia technologies are increasingly used by university lecturers to stay relevant in contemporary media-saturated society. Across disciplines, using multimedia in teaching often means integrating videos, including feature films and/or television series (FF/TV), into learning activities and assessments. Like other media technologies, effective integration of FF/TV into teaching can be achieved through coordinated training and practice. This study explores formal and informal venues of academic development (AD) to understand how lecturers learn to teach with film. A model of four key aspects is proposed as a research outcome, detailing lecturers' requirements and considerations regarding teaching with FF/TV for future AD options.

Information literacy is a crucial topic in the library science profession. The information needs and perceptions of the information literacy of preservice and early-career school librarians were explored in this research using a survey and interviews distributed nationally over a 5-month time frame. These participants, who have been employed in the field for 5 years or less or are currently completing coursework, were queried about their perceptions of information literacy and how the profession had changed through the course of their graduate work and early-career experiences. Participants felt well prepared and believed their schooling met their need for information in the areas of readers' advisory and the use of copyright and fair use and for for teaching these topics to students. They also reported that they were well prepared for teaching with educational technology. Participants were least prepared in the area of facilitation of classroom teacher/school librarian collaborations, even though this aspect of their library school experience was highly emphasized. Once graduates were in a library position, they met their information needs by reaching out to mentors, more experienced school librarians, and their professional learning community.

This study aims to discuss the fundamentals of music copywriting in music education and identify pathways for integrating musical compositions into the learning process without infringing copyright and prohibiting the use of specific music pieces. To achieve this goal, the authors used methods of analysis to identify the available resources in the field of music copywriting and education. The study reports that 35% of students give their preference to classical music, 32% want to use traditional Chinese music, and only 22% consider it possible to play modern melodies. To avoid copyright infringement in the presentation of theory that is available on the Internet, authors should document their original approach to learning and publish the data in books and monographs. The authors found that the use of classical music in the classroom was not an infringement of copyright because the statute of limitations had expired. The findings suggested that the students whose similarity scores ranged from 0 to 24% in the music compositions got better knowledge, with the coefficient of effectiveness of 2.5.

Open Access Repositories (OARs) are viewed as a new channel of scholarly communication and a way for scholars to disseminate their work faster to a broader audience. Finding a solution to low faculty participation in OARs is an intricate task that requires a deeper understanding of faculty perceptions of OARs. Previous studies have investigated the motivating and hindering factors using different forms of surveys that focussed on external factors, which were either social or technological in context. The goal of this qualitative study was to provide an understanding of the psychology of the faculty reluctance towards their participation in OARs. The results reveal that while close to half of the faculty support the OA principles and are willing to share their work in Open Access (OA), a little over half of faculty seem to be unfamiliar with the OA goals and the purpose of OARs. In addition, faculty comments reveal a wide range of perceived concerns regarding OARs, from submission process, plagiarism, and copyright concerns to the perception of OARs as low-quality publishing venues that can have a negative impact on their academic careers. Thus, to better address faculty needs and concerns, it is crucial for OAR staff to take a multifaceted approach, targeting each faculty concern independently.

The authors present two classroom experiments on technology licensing. The first classroom experiment introduces the concept of royalty stacking. Students learn that noncooperative pricing of royalties for complementary intellectual property rights leads to a double-marginalization effect. Cooperation solves the problem and is welfare-improving. The second classroom experiment introduces students to cross-licensing. It shows that reciprocal royalty payments dampen competition. The classroom experiments stimulate discussions of technology licensing, intellectual property rights, different royalty structures, patent pools, and technology standards. The authors present the experimental procedures and suggest routes for the discussion.

With anatomical education becoming a global endeavor, free online resources offered via the Internet or other electronic venues are of increasing importance for teaching and learning communities worldwide. Students and instructors from developing countries, often limited in access to modern instructional resources by infrastructural and financial constraints, are frequent users of such online learning tools. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic when all academic institutions were forced to quickly switch to a non-contact mode of teaching, free online instructional resources were often essential for continuing the educational mission. However, there are a number of obstacles and issues that need to be considered when creating and offering such learning resources. These include the type, quality, and completeness of the content, their educational purpose, access to technical and financial resources, copyright and ethical issues, and more. Educators, who plan to generate and maintain free online resources, should also be aware that such projects usually require a considerable long-term time commitment. In this article, these issues are discussed using the Michigan Histology website as an example. The discussion also addresses how e-learning resources like the Michigan Histology website supported online learning during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Copyright intersects with every field of Library and Information Science (LIS) from archival and preservation practices to reference services and academic librarianship. However, copyright instruction is still lacking in many Information Science programs across the country (Cross & Edwards, 2011; Schmidt & English, 2015). The sudden move to remote online education in the spring of 2020 due to a global pandemic highlighted the importance of understanding copyright exceptions and, especially, the power of fair use to quickly provide resources to a wide variety of patrons with novel needs. The need for accessible copyright education for all information professionals has never been stronger. However, engaging with copyright often provokes cognitive as well as affective uncertainty, likely due to the fear and anxiety that can come from the threat of serious financial and reputational consequences. Logically, it seems that librarians might feel less anxious about copyright if they had participated in formalized training about copyright focused on legal issues impacting library and information professionals. To understand this likely correlation, the researchers queried students using a qualitative survey both before and after taking an eight-week intensive copyright course that paired legal expertise with an everyday approach to material designed to demystify the law. Using phenomenographic methodology, the investigators asked their information science students how they attempt to answer copyright questions and how they feel about doing so. The results provide evidence supporting the need for more robust copyright education in schools of information science, as such training to help future librarians to feel more prepared to answer copyright questions and less anxious about intersections between copyright and their field of librarianship before they enter the workforce.

In this paper, I critically examine platformized music education on YouTube. I suggest YouTube's platform mechanisms influence music teaching and learning on the platform. The influence is present throughout the production, distribution, and monetization structures that YouTube-based music educators experience. I discuss how creators make videos with broad autonomy over what they produce but with a need to conform to platform affordances and to foment interaction with their content due to platform mechanisms such as datafication and commodification. Distribution is crucial to their work, yet YouTube's algorithm and governance structures operate in powerful and opaque ways forcing music educators to navigate platform influences on their livelihoods and teaching. Finally, as creators earn money through their work, they encounter monetization structures and programs heavily entrenched in YouTube's business model and have little agency or voice in shaping these structures and programs. The use of documentary, and in turn the value of documentary, is well established in formal education contexts. In addition to an established pedagogical value, this article examines the cultural and economic value of documentary in education through both national legislative reviews (the Australian Law Reform Commission's (ALRC's) "Copyright and the Digital Economy") and a specific learning resource in the form of study guides. Within this research, study guides function as a means to explore the plurality of ways in which documentary may be valued through several stakeholders invested in sustaining educational engagement with the form. Most notably among these stakeholders is copyright collection agency Screenrights, which bridges the valuing of documentary between screen and education sectors alongside national funding agency Screen Australia and the Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM), an independent, non-profit, professional association promoting the study of media in education. ATOM in particular is synonymous with the creation of study guides for documentary films. Investigating the educative, cultural and economic value of study guides offers a discrete albeit valuable study of the ways in which documentary functions within Australian education contexts.
