As a kind of typical lean meat essences and veterinary drugs, ractopamine (RAC) has been frequently detected in agricultural sewage and livestock, posing potential risk to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Despite its widespread occurrence, the environmental fate of RAC remains unclear. Here, the mechanisms underlying the direct and indirect photodegradation of RAC was investigated under UV light irradiation at wavelengths of 275 and 365 nm, respectively. The effect of pH, initial concentration, and co-existing ions were examined. For direct photodegradation, the quantum yield of RAC increased with increasing pH values. In solutions containing dissolved organic matter (DOM), indirect photodegradation of RAC intensified with increasing pH values, and the initial concentration of DOM accelerated the process. The presence of Cu 2+ was found to inhibit both direct and indirect photodegradation of RAC. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry and quenching experiments revealed that direct photodegradation was primarily attributed to the decomposition of the triplet state of RAC. Both the triplet state of DOM ( 3 DOM*) and singlet oxygen contributed to the indirect photodegradation of RAC. LC-MS/MS analysis indicated that oxidation of the phenol group and subsequent decarboxylation were the principal photodegradation processes. The energies of each state of RAC and the active sites of RAC molecules were computed using frontier molecular orbitals and Fukui indices based on density functional theory. Combining the analysis of photoproducts with energy calculation, pathways of the direct and indirect photodegradation of RAC were proposed. Achieving an efficient and inexpensive bactericidal effect is a key point for the design of antibacterial agent. Recent advances have proved molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) as a promising platform for antimicrobial applications, while the combination of metal nanoparticle would promote the antibacterial efficiency. Nevertheless, the dispersivity, cheapness and safety of metal nanoparticle loaded on MoS 2 raised some concerns. In this paper, we successfully realized a uniform decoration of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) on surface of MoS 2 nanosheets, and the size of CuNPs could be controlled below 5 nm. Under 5 min irradiation of 660 nm visible light, the synthesized CuNPs/MoS 2 composite demonstrated superior antibacterial performances (almost 100% bacterial killed) towards both Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus over the single component (Cu or MoS 2 ), while the bactericidal effect could last for at least 6 h. The synergism of photodynamic generated hydroxyl radical (·OH), oxidative stress without reactive oxygen species production and the release of Cu ions was considered as the mechanism for the antibacterial properties of CuNPs/MoS 2 . Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is an important indicator for clinical diagnosis of liver dysfunction, organophosphate toxicity, and poststroke dementia. Point-of-care testing (POCT) of BChE activity is still a challenge, which is a critical requirement for the modern clinical diagnose. A portable photothermal BChE assay is proposed through modulating the photothermal effects of Cu 2 O nanoparticles. BChE can catalyze the decomposition of butyrylcholine, producing thiocholine, which further reduce and coordinate with CuO on surface of Cu 2 O nanoparticle. This leads to higher efficiency of formation of Cu 9 S 8 nanoparticles, through the reaction between Cu 2 O nanoparticle and NaHS, together with the promotion of photothermal conversion efficiency from 3.1 to 59.0%, under the excitation of 1064 nm laser radiation. An excellent linear relationship between the temperature change and the logarithm of BChE concentration is obtained in the range 1.0 to 7.5 U/mL, with a limit of detection of 0.076 U/mL. In addition, the portable photothermal assay shows strong detection robustness, which endows the accurate detection of BChE in human serum, together with the screening and quantification of organophosphorus pesticides. Such a simple, sensitive, and robust assay shows great potential for the applications to clinical BChE detection and brings a new horizon for the development of temperature based POCT., (© 2021. Biofilms formed from the pathogenic bacteria that attach to the surfaces of biomedical devices and implantable materials result in various persistent and chronic bacterial infections, posing serious threats to human health. Compared to the elimination of matured biofilms, prevention of the formation of biofilms is expected to be a more effective way for the treatment of biofilm-associated infections. Herein, we develop a facile method for endowing diverse substrates with long-term antibiofilm property by deposition of a hybrid film composed of tannic acid/Cu ion (TA/Cu) complex and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In this system, the TA/Cu complex acts as a multifunctional building block with three different roles: (i) as a versatile "glue" with universal adherent property for substrate modification, (ii) as a photothermal biocidal agent for bacterial elimination under irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) laser, and (iii) as a potent linker for immobilization of PEG with inherent antifouling property to inhibit adhesion and accumulation of bacteria. The resulted hybrid film shows negligible cytotoxicity and good histocompatibility and could prevent biofilm formation for at least 15 days in vitro and suppress bacterial infection in vivo , showing great potential for practical applications to solve the biofilm-associated problems of biomedical materials and devices.

HKUST-1 MOFs and its derivative HKUST-CuO were coupled with TiO 2 nanoparticles to form the heterogeneous composites of HKUST-1/TiO 2 and HKUST-CuO/TiO 2 based on their well-suitable bandgap energies (Eg). Compared with mono-component HKUST-1 or HKUST-CuO, the prepared composites displayed photoelectrochemical (PEC) response due to the synergistic effect from their heterogeneous structure. Higher photocurrent response was obtained on HKUST-CuO/TiO 2 -modified ITO electrode (HKUST-CuO/TiO 2 /ITO), which could be attributed to the hollow structure with a thin shell of HKUST-CuO greatly enhancing visible spectra harvesting. The CuO component in HKUST-CuO not only could accelerate electron transfer on the heterojunction interface but also effectively separate the photo-generated charge carriers (e -1 /h + ). Based on the excellent PEC performance of prepared photoactive composite material, under visible-light excitation (λ ≥ 420 nm) and with a working potential of 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the S1 (probe DNA)/HKUST-CuO/TiO 2 /ITO PEC platform was successfully fabricated for colitoxin DNA detection without using ascorbic acid (AA) as an electron donor. Compared with the analysis results on S1/HKUST-1/TiO 2 /ITO electrode, S1/HKUST-CuO/TiO 2 /ITO displayed a wider linear response range from 1.0 × 10 -6 to 4.0 × 10 -1  nM with a lower detection limit of 3.73 × 10 -7  nM (S/N = 3), the linear regression equation was ΔI (10 -6 A) =0.5549-0.1858 log (C S2 /M), which confirmed the HKUST-CuO could improve sensitivity because of its prominent PEC property. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the PEC sensor for target DNA detection of 2.0 × 10 -4  nM was 7.4%. The proposed DNA biosensor also possessed good specificity and stability. In situ quantification and imaging of low-level intracellular microRNAs (miRs) are important areas in biosensor research. Herein, DNA-driven Fe x Cu y Se@upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) core@satellite nanostructures were developed to probe microRNA-21 (miR-21). Fe x Cu y Se@UCNP probes displayed dual signals: upconversion luminescence (UCL) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the presence of miR-21, the luminescence signal was restored and the T 2 value was significantly increased because of dissociation of UCNPs from the assemblies. There was a good linear relationship between the dual signals and the expression levels of miR-21 in the range of 0.035-31.824 amol/ng RNA . The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0058 amol/ng RNA for the luminescence intensity and 0.0182 amol/ng RNA for the MRI signal. This method opens a new avenue for intracellular miR-21 detection with high sensitivity and specificity.

Multimodal nanotherapeutic cancer treatments are widely studied but are often limited by their costly and complex syntheses that are not easily scaled up. Herein, a simple formulation of glucose-oxidase-coated CuS nanoparticles was demonstrated to be highly effective for melanoma treatment, acting through a synergistic combination of glucose starvation, photothermal therapy, and synergistic advanced chemodynamic therapy enabled by near-infrared irradiation coupled with Fenton-like reactions that were enhanced by endogenous chloride.

2D metal-organic framework (MOF) film as the active layer show promising application prospects in various fields including sensors, catalysis, and electronic devices. However, exploring the application of 2D MOF film in the field of artificial synapses has not been implemented yet. In this work, we fabricated a novel 2D MOF film (Cu-THPP, THPP=5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine), and further used it as an active layer to explore the application in the simulation of human brain synapses. It shows excellent light-stimulated synaptic plasticity properties, and exhibits the foundation function of synapses such as long-term plasticity (LTP), short-term plasticity (STP), and the conversion of STP to LTP. Most critically, the MOF based artificial synaptic device exhibits an excellent stability in atmosphere. The antimicrobial potential of two ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes, [Ru(phen) 2 L1] 2+ and [Ru(phen) 2 L2] 2+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) containing the 4,4'-(2,5,8,11,14-pentaaza[15])-2,2'-bipyridilophane (L1) and the 4,4'-bis-[methylen-(1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane)]-2,2' bipyridine (L2) units, is herein investigated. These peculiar polyamine frameworks afford the formation of highly charged species in solution, influence the DNA-binding and cleavage properties of compounds, but they do not undermine their singlet oxygen sensitizing capacities, thus making these complexes attractive 1 O 2 generators in aqueous solution. L1 and L2 also permit to stably host Fenton -active Cu 2+ ion/s, leading to the formation of mixed Ru 2+ /Cu 2+ forms capable to further strengthen the oxidative damages to biological targets. Herein, following a characterization of the Cu 2+ binding ability by [Ru(phen) 2 L2] 2+ , the water-octanol distribution coefficients, the DNA binding, cleavage and 1 O 2 sensitizing properties of [Ru(phen) 2 L2] 2+ and [Cu 2 Ru(phen) 2 L2] 6+ were analysed and compared with those of [Ru(phen) 2 L1] 2+ and [CuRu(phen) 2 L1] 4+ . The antimicrobial activity of all compounds was evaluated against B. subtilis, chosen as a model for gram-positive bacteria, both under dark and upon light-activation. Our results unveil a notable phototoxicity of [Ru(phen) 2 L2] 2+ and [Cu 2 Ru(phen) 2 L2] 6+ , with MIC (minimal inhibitory concentrations) values of 3.12 μM. In order to solve two issues of chlorine-resistant bacteria (CRB) and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in tap water after the chlorine-containing treatment process, an innovative core-sheath nanostructured Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 was designed and synthesized. The fabrication mechanism of the materials was then systematically analyzed to determine the component and valence state. The properties of CRB inactivation together with trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) photodegradation by Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 were investigated in detail. It was found that Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 displayed excellent antibacterial activity with a relatively low cytotoxicity concentration due to its synergism of nanowire structure, ion release, and reactive oxygen species generation. Furthermore, the Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite also exhibited outstanding photocatalytic degradation activity on TCAA under simulated sunlight irradiation, which was verified to be dominated by the surface reaction through kinetic analysis. More interestingly, the cell growth rate of Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 was determined to be 50% and 10% higher than those of Cu/Cu 2 O and Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO after 10 h incubation, respectively, manifesting a weaker cytotoxicity. Therefore, the designed Cu/Cu 2 O-ZnO-Fe 3 O 4 could be a promising agent for tap water treatment.

Hypoxia in a tumor microenvironment (TME) has inhibited the photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy. Here, Ni 3 S 2 /Cu 1.8 S nanoheterostructures were synthesized as a new photosensitizer, which also realizes the intracellular photocatalytic O 2 evolution to relieve hypoxia in TME and enhance PDT as well. With the narrow band gap (below 1.5 eV), the near infrared (NIR) (808 nm) can stimulate their separation of the electron-hole. The novel Z-scheme nanoheterostructures, testified by experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, possess a higher redox ability, endowing the photoexited holes with sufficient potential to oxide H 2 O into O 2 , directly. Meanwhile, the photostimulated electrons can capture the dissolved O 2 to form a toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, Ni 3 S 2 /Cu 1.8 S nanocomposites also possess the catalase-/peroxidase-like activity to convert the endogenous H 2 O 2 into ·OH and O 2 , which not only cause chemodynamic therapy (CDT) but also alleviate hypoxia to assist the PDT as well. In addition, owing to the narrow band gap, they possess a high NIR harvest and great photothermal conversion efficiency (49.5%). It is noted that the nanocomposites also exhibit novel biodegradation and can be metabolized and eliminated via feces and urine within 2 weeks. The present single electrons in Ni/Cu ions induce the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability for Ni 3 S 2 /Cu 1.8 S. To make sure that the cancer cells were specifically targeted, hyaluronic acid (HA) was grafted outside and Ni 3 S 2 /Cu 1.8 S@HA integrated photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT) to exhibit the great anticancer efficiency for hypoxic tumor elimination.

The consolidation of nanovectors with biological membranes has recently been a subject of interest owing to the prolonged systemic circulation time and delayed clearance by the reticuloendothelial system of such systems. Among the different biomembranes, the macrophage membrane has a similar systemic circulation time, with an additional chemotactic aptitude, targeting integrin proteins. In this study, we aimed to establish a laser-activated, disintegrable, and deeply tumor-penetrative nanoplatform. We used a highly tumor-ablative and laser-responsive disintegrable copper sulfide nanoparticle, loaded it with paclitaxel, and camouflaged it with the macrophage membrane for the fabrication of PTX@CuS@MMNPs. The in vitro paclitaxel release profile was favorable for release in the tumor microenvironment, and the release was accelerated after laser exposure. Cellular internalization was improved by membrane encapsulation. Cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, reactive oxygen species generation, and apoptosis induction of PTX@CuS@MMNPs were further improved upon laser exposure, and boosted permeation was achieved by co-administration of the tumor-penetrating peptide iRGD. In vivo tumor accumulation, tumor inhibition rate, and apoptotic marker expression induced by PTX@CuS@MMNPs were significantly improved by laser irradiation and iRGD co-administration. PTX@CuS@MMNPs induced downregulation of cellular proliferation and angiogenic markers but no significant changes in body weight, survival, or significant toxicities in vital organs after laser exposure, suggesting their biocompatibility. The disintegrability of the nanosystem, accredited to biodegradability, favored efficient elimination from the body. In conclusion, PTX@CuS@MMNPs showed promising traits in combination therapies for excellent tumor eradication.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are needed in various fields, especially in the biomedical field. CuO NPs was obtained from Aspergillus terreus filtrate. CuO NPs structure was confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, as well as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD offers the nanoparticles purity of CuO biosynthesis. CuO NPs are spherical when examined with TEM. The average size of CuO NPs from TEM was 15.75 ± 3.95 nm. New composite of P (AA-AN)-NPs CuO was synthesized by biotechnology and the induced γ-radiation. The distribution coefficient value (K d ) of 47 Sc(III) as well as 47 Ca(II) ions for the synthetic new composite was determined by batch technique. Radiochemical separation of 47 Sc(III) from irradiated calcium target was studied using chromatographic column packed with the new composite material. The recovery yield of 78 ± 1.2% for 47 Sc(III) was obtained using 1 M HCl. The quality control tests (chemical, radionuclide and radiochemical purities) of the eluted 47 Sc confirmed that it's adequate for nuclear medicine applications., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In the present study, the biogenic synthesis of an ecofriendly and non-toxic chitosan (CS) coated copper oxide NPs (CS-CuO nanocomposite) using Psidium guajava aqueous leaf extract. The biogenic synthesized CS-CuO nanocomposite was characterized by using UV-vis spectroscopy analysis (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FE-SEM-EDS), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The prepared CS-CuO nanocomposite was evaluated for antibacterial activity by agar well diffusion method as well as minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were assessed against both Gram-positive Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Gram-negative Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis with good inhibition effects on Gram-negative bacteria than the Gram-positive bacteria. A photoelectrochemical platform for thrombin determination was developed based on Au-rGO-CuS as multiple signal amplification elements. CuInS 2 QDs was used to sensitize burr-shape TiO 2 (b-TiO 2 ) to obtain a strong photocurrent. Under the specific recognition between aptamer and thrombin, a sandwichlike structure was formed and the Au-rGO-CuS-labeled aptamer (S2@Au-rGO-CuS) was immobilized on the electrode surface. This induced a sharp decrease in photocurrent. The phenomenon is mainly due to the fact that CuS NPs can competitively consume the light energy and electron donor with CuInS 2 /b-TiO 2 . The rGO can increase the amount of CuS NPs and the Au NPs can accelerate charge transferring which depress the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in CuS to further enhance the competitive capacity of CuS. The sandwichlike structure has a steric hindrance effect. Therefore, the S2@Au-rGO-CuS has a multiple signal amplification function for thrombin determination. Under optimal conditions, the PEC aptasensor exhibited a wide linear concentration range from 0.1 pM to 10 nM with a low detection limit of 30 fM (S/N = 3) for thrombin. Besides, the designed aptasensor performed well in the assay of human serum sample, indicating good potential for the determination of thrombin in real samples. Graphical abstract.

Carbohydrates, one of the three primary macromolecules of living organisms, play significant roles in various biological processes such as intercellular communication, cell recognition, and immune activity. While the majority of established methods for the installation of carbohydrates through the anomeric carbon rely on nucleophilic displacement, anomeric radicals represent an attractive alternative because of their functional group compatibility and high anomeric selectivities. Herein, we demonstrate that anomeric nucleophiles such as C1 stannanes can be converted into anomeric radicals by merging Cu(I) catalysis with blue light irradiation to achieve highly stereoselective C(sp 3 )-S cross-coupling reactions. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations revealed that the C-S bond-forming step occurs via the transfer of the anomeric radical directly to a sulfur electrophile bound to Cu(II) species. This pathway complements a radical chain observed for photochemical metal-free conditions where a disulfide initiator can be activated by a Lewis base additive. Both strategies utilize anomeric nucleophiles as efficient radical donors and achieve a switch from an ionic to a radical pathway. Taken together, the stability of glycosyl nucleophiles, a broad substrate scope, and high anomeric selectivities observed for the thermal and photochemical protocols make this novel C-S cross coupling a practical tool for late-stage glycodiversification of bioactive natural products and drug candidates.

As a newly emerging treatment strategy for many diseases, hydrogen therapy has attracted a lot of attention because of its excellent biosafety. However, the high diffusivity and low solubility of hydrogen make it difficult to accumulate in local lesions. Herein, we develop a H 2 self-generation nanoplatform by in situ water splitting driven by near-infrared (NIR) laser. In this work, core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) of NaGdF 4 :Yb,Tm/g-C 3 N 4 /Cu 3 P (UCC) nanocomposites as core encapsulated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified with folic acid as shell are designed and synthesized. Due to the acid-responsive ZIF-8 shell, enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, and folate receptor-mediated endocytosis, CSNPs are selectively captured by tumor cells. Upon 980 nm laser irradiation, CSNPs exhibit a high production capacity of H 2 and active oxygen species (ROS), as well as an appropriate photothermal conversion temperature. Furthermore, rising temperature increases the Fenton reaction rate of Cu(I) with H 2 O 2 and strengthens the curative effect of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). The excess glutathione (GSH) in tumor microenvironment (TME) can deplete positive holes produced in the valence band of g-C 3 N 4 in the g-C 3 N 4 /Cu 3 P Z-scheme heterojunction. GSH also can reduce Cu(II) to Cu(I), ensuring a continuous Fenton reaction. Thus, a NIR-driven H 2 production nanoplatform is constructed for H 2 -mediated cascade-amplifying multimodal synergetic therapy.

Some new kinds of antibiotics-free antibacterial agents are required to deal with bacterial infections due to the occurrence of drug-resistance. In this work, Cu-based metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) embedded with CuS NPs were fabricated via a simple in-situ sulfuration process. The synthesized MOFs exhibited an highly effective disinfection efficacy of 99.70 % and 99.80 % against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli within 20 min irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) light, respectively, which was ascribed to the cooperative effects of photodynamic and photothermal effects of the composites. A certain amount of Cu 2+ ions of the MOFs were reacted to form CuS NPs, which endowed this composite with outstanding photocatalytic and photothermal performance during NIR light irradiation. Moreover, HKUST-1 that composed of low toxic organic ligand 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) coordinating copper ions could be a controllable carrier that imposed certain constraint on the NPs. A facile and sensitive self-powered cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor is reported for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) based on CuO-Cu 2 O nanowire array grown on Cu mesh (CuO-Cu 2 O NWA/CM) as electrode. The mixed narrow band gaps of the CuO-Cu 2 O heterostructure ensured its wide absorption band, effective electron/hole separation, and high photocatalytic activity in the visible region. In addition, nanowires directly grown on the substrate provided high specific surface area and exposed abundant active sites, thus guaranteeing its high photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, the self-powered sensor exhibited favorable analytical performance with fast response, wide linear ranges of 0.01 to 5 ng/mL and 5 to 100 ng/mL, an acceptable detection limit of 3 pg/mL, and reasonable selectivity and stability. The proposed CuO-Cu 2 O NWA/CM can be considered a promising visible light-responsive photoactive material for fabrication of PEC aptasensor with high performance. Nerve tissues are one of the most difficult tissues to repair due to the limited source of neural stem cells and the difficulty in promoting the neural differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells by growth factors. Electromagnetic field has been proved to have the ability to regulate stem cell differentiation. Although some research studies promoted the neural differentiation of stem cells using an external power source, it is still a big challenge to realize nerve repair in bodies because of the unwieldiness and complexity of the power supply equipment. Surface plasmons (SP) are electromagnetic oscillations caused by the interaction of free electrons and photons on a metal surface, and almost no one has used these localized electromagnetic oscillations to regulate stem cell differentiation. In this study, based on the concept proposed by our group that "the stem cell fate can be regulated by nanostructure mediated physical signals", the localized electromagnetic oscillation generated by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of copper sulfide (CuS) nanostructures irradiated with near-infrared light has been proved to have positive regulation on stem cell maturation and neuron-like cell differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs). This regulation method avoids the use of wire connection of an external power source, which realizes the stem cell fate regulation by an external field. In addition, this work demonstrated that it is promising to realize the light promoted nerve repair in bodies by using an implantable plasmonic nanomaterial with absorption in the near-infrared region within a human "optical window", which has important academic value and application prospect. As we know, this is the first time to use semiconductor nanostructures as a medium to regulate stem cell neuron-like cell differentiation by near-infrared light and the LSPR of a plasmonic nanomaterial, which will have great influence on biomedical engineering and attract broad attention from nanomaterials scientists, neurobiologists, and neurosurgeons.

Demands for chemical-free treatments for controlling insect pests are increasing worldwide. One such treatment is microwave heating; however, two critical issues arise when using microwaves as a heat source: intensive labor and excessive energy-consumption. Optimization is thus required to reduce energy consumption while effectively killing insects. Currently, the lethal effect of microwaves on insects is considered to be due to the temperature of the irradiated materials. This study examines how the conditions of irradiation, such as resonance or traveling mode, changed the conversion of electromagnetic energy into heat when 2.45 GHz microwaves penetrated the body of the termite, C. formosanus. Our results indicated that it is possible to heat and kill termites with microwaves under resonance condition. Termites were however found to be very tolerant to microwave irradiation as the permittivity of the insect was low compared with other reported insects and plants. Electron spin resonance revealed that termites contained several paramagnetic substances in their bodies, such as Fe 3+ , Cu 2+ , Mn 2+ , and organic radicals. Interestingly, irradiation with traveling microwaves hardly produced heat, but increased the organic radicals in termite bodies indicating non-thermal effects of microwaves.

The method of pulsed laser processing with a nanosecond pulse duration was employed to obtain a nanotexture on the surface of copper alloys. The effect of the obtained micro- and nanotexture on the bactericidal properties of the surface upon its contact with suspensions containing of E. coli K12 C600 or K. pneumoniae 811 cells in a nutrient medium were studied. The evolution of cell morphology after on the nanotextured surface was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and changes in biological fluid during this contact were studied by mass spectrometry. It was shown that massive death of bacterial cells both in the suspension and on the nanotextured surface was determined by combined toxic effects of the hierarchically textured surface and high concentration of Cu 2+ ions in the medium.

Here, a novel CuBi 2 O 4 /Bi 2 MoO 6 (CBO/BMO) p-n heterojunction was fabricated and exhibited markedly improved photocatalytic inactivation capacity of E. coli cells under visible light excitation (λ > 420 nm) compared with pure CuBi 2 O 4 and Bi 2 MoO 6 . The CBO/BMO-0.5 hybrid displayed the highest photoinactivation ability which could completely inactivate the E. coli cellswithin 4 h. The mechanism of photocatalytic disinfection towards E. coli of CBO/BMO heterojunctions was attributed to the disruption of cell-membrane, leakage and damage of cellular content including total protein and DNA as verified with SEM, fluorescence-base dead/live stain, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electropheresis (SDS-PAGE) and agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE). Additionally, the scavenge experiments showed that the reactive species h + , e - and •O 2 - play the predominant role in the photocatalytic system of CBO/BMO hybrids. The improved photocatalytic activity of CBO/BMO composites was mainly attributed to the promotion of spatial separation and migration rate of photoproduced electron-hole pairs, enhancement of visible light absorption and more generation of reactive species (•O 2 - ) on the interface of catalyst and water which was demonstrated by nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) and EPR. The labelling and imaging of mitochondria and nucleolus have attracted great attention because of the involvement of these cellular organelles in critical cellular activities. Therefore, a large number of mitochondria- or nucleolus-labelling probes have been developed throughout the world. However, in the current study, we successfully developed two pyrazole-based, copper-linked triphenylphosphine-coupled emissive metallo-complexes (C1 and C2) for the simultaneous visualization of mitochondria and nucleolus in a single run. These complexes were very inexpensive and could be synthesized by a simple one-pot multicomponent reaction scheme. The complexes were very specific, and only a small concentration of 5 μM was found to be sufficient to probe both the organelles efficiently. Additionally, even under a shorter incubation period (half hour), the fluorescence intensity from the cells was appreciable. Also, both the compounds were found to be photostable when torched with 10% of a 100 mW laser for up to 10 min. All these results indicate that both the complexes may contribute towards the future development of cell imaging tools. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the development of multifunctional live cell imaging tools for simultaneous mitochondria and nucleolus imaging and within the shortest incubation time of about 30 minutes.

Copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) is a novel sensitizer that can be excited by ultraviolet (UV) light, microwave (MW), ultrasound, and X-rays to generate highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) for cancer cell destruction. The purpose of this study is to present a facile method for the synthesis of Cu-Cy nanoparticles. Interestingly, we were able to decrease both the stirring and heating time by about 24 and 6 times, respectively, thus making Cu-Cy nanoparticles more economical than what was reported before. 1,4-Diazabicylo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), a well-known singlet oxygen quencher, showed that the majority of ROS produced by Cu-Cy nanoparticles upon UV and MW exposure were singlet oxygen. Moreover, ROS generated by Cu-Cy nanoparticles upon UV and MW exposure were confirmed by a known ROS tracking agent, dihydrorhodamine 123, further serving as an additional piece of evidence that Cu-Cy is a promising ROS generating agent to destroy cancer cells as well as bacteria or viruses by a radical therapeutic approach. Additionally, for the first time, the hydroxyl radical (˙OH) produced by Cu-Cy nanoparticles upon MW activation was proved by a photoluminescence (PL) technique using coumarin as a probe molecule. Remarkably, newly synthesized nanoparticles were found to be much more effective for producing ROS and killing cancer cells, suggesting that the new method may have increased the reactivity of the Cu-Cy nanoparticles due to an overall size reduction. Overall, the new method not only reduced the synthesis time but also enhanced the effectiveness of Cu-Cy nanoparticles for photodynamic therapy.

The abuse of antibiotics has led to widespread antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and environmental pollution. In order to solve these problems, a lot of studies have been carried out mainly focusing on the modification and recombination of organic reagents, but bacteria are still easy to adapt to it, so they cannot be thoroughly solved. Here, we present an integrated pollution-free synergistic antibacterial nanotechnology using inorganic nano-Cu 2 O, which could not only enhance the efficacy of aminoglycoside antibiotics, but also eliminate their environmental pollution by photocatalytic degradation. It was found that Cu 2 O showed significantly synergistic antibacterial effect (1+1>2) when combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics against Escherichia coli. The inhibition zone area increased by 59.0% when Cu 2 O combined with neomycin. This reduces dosage and the risk of AMR, and does not pollute the environment after degradation. Next, to explore the synergistic mechanisms, we have studied the interaction of antibiotics with nanoparticles, as well as the interaction of antibacterial agents with bacteria. A photocathode is described for the determination of microRNA-21 by using CuInS 2 as an active photocathode material. Exonuclease III assisted target recycling amplification was employed to enhance the detection sensitivity. The TATA-binding protein (TBP) was applied to enhance steric hindrance which decreases the photoelectrochemical intensity. This strategy is designed by combining the anti-interference photocathode material, enzyme assisted target recycling amplification and TBP induced signal off, showing remarkable amplification efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit for microRNA-21 is as low as 0.47 fM, and a linear range was got from 1.0 × 10 -15  M to 1.0 × 10 -6  M. Zea mays L. dry husk extract was used to bio synthesize copper oxide nanoparticles. Red coloured cubic Cu 2 O nanoparticles were obtained for the first time via this simple, eco- friendly, green synthesis route. The Cu 2 O nanoparticles were thermally oxidized to pure monoclinic CuO nanoparticles at 600 °C. The phases of the copper oxides were confirmed from the x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The nanoparticle sizes as obtained from high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) analysis range from 10 to 26 nm, 36-73 nm and 30-90 nm for the unannealed Cu 2 O, 300 °C and 600 °C annealed CuO respectively. The values of the bandgap energies obtained from diffuse reflectance of the nanoparticles are 2.0, 1.30 and 1.42 eV respectively for the unannealed, 300 °C, and 600 °C annealed copper oxide nanoparticles. The 600 °C annealed copper oxide nanoparticles showed 91% and 90% degradation ability for methylene blue dye (BM) and textile effluent (TE) respectively under visible light irradiation. While CuO_300 is more effective to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli 518,133 and Staphylococcus aureus 9144, Cu 2 O is better for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus licheniformis. Copper oxidative addition into organohalides is a challenging two-electron process. In contrast, formal oxidative addition of copper to C sp 2 carbon-bromine bonds can be accomplished by employing latent silyl radicals under photoredox conditions. This novel paradigm for copper oxidative addition has now been applied to a Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling of C sp 3 -bromides. Specifically, a copper/photoredox dual catalytic system for the coupling of alkyl bromides with trifluoromethyl groups is presented. This operationally simple and robust protocol successfully converts a variety of alkyl, allyl, benzyl, and heterobenzyl bromides into the corresponding alkyl trifluoromethanes.

Photothermal effects (PTEs) have been greatly concerned with the fast development of new photothermal nanomaterials. Herein we propose a photothermal immunoassay (PTIA) by taking mycotoxins (AFB 1 ) as an example based on the PTEs of plasmonic Cu 2- x Se nanocrystals (NCs). By loading plasmonic Cu 2- x Se NCs into liposomes to form photothermal soft nanoballs (ptSNBs), on which aptamer of AFB 1 previously assembled, a sandwich structure of AFB 1 could be formed with the aptamer on ptSNBs and capture antibody. The heat released from the ptSNBs under NIR irradiation, owing to the plasmonic photothermal light-to-heat conversion through photon-electron-phonon coupling, makes the temperature of substrate solution increased, and the increased temperature has a linear relationship with the AFB 1 content. Owing to the large amounts of plasmonic Cu 2- x Se NCs in the ptSNBs, the PTEs get amplified, making AFB 1 higher than 1 ng/mL detectable in food even if with a rough homemade immunothermometer. The proposal of PTIA opens a new field of immunoassay including developing photothermal nanostructures, new thermometers, PTIA theory, and so on.

Intracellular microRNA (miRNA) imaging remains a key challenge due to its low abundance. Herein, we integrate a rationally designed elegant entropy-driven DNA probe with assisted DNA fuel on hollow copper sulfide nanoparticles (HCuSNPs) for intracellular miRNA imaging. The anchored assisted DNA fuel strand could be efficiently released by a NIR-II laser irradiation induced photothermal effect of the HCuSNPs. The DNA machine was activated by target miRNA binding and powered by NIR-responsive released DNA fuel through toehold-mediated strand displacement reactions, accomplished by strong fluorescence recovery. It demonstrated 2 orders of magnitude improvement in the detection sensitivity compared to molecular beacons (MBs). Reliable intracellular low-abundance miRNA imaging among different cells and monitoring of down-regulated miRNA was realized without external enzyme or fuel addition. Oncogenic miRNA imaging in vivo was also realized. The entropy-driven DNA machine system provides a facile and powerful tool for intracellular miRNA analysis and related biomedical applications.

Removal of antibiotics from aqueous solutions by photocatalysis is an advanced technology for environmental remediation. Herein, we have fabricated a series of AgX (X = I, Br)/CuBi 2 O 4 composites through an in-situ precipitation method. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained photocatalysts was measured by the degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). All the AgX (X = I, Br)/CuBi 2 O 4 composites exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity than that of pure CuBi 2 O 4 . The enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the efficient interfacial charge separation and migration in the AgX (X = I, Br)/CuBi 2 O 4 heterojunctions. Meanwhile, AgX (X = I, Br)/CuBi 2 O 4 heterojunctions display excellent photocatalytic stability, and the photocatalytic degradation rates were not obvious decreased even after five successive cycles. Based on the energy band structure, the radicals trapping and electronic spin resonance (ESR) experiments, the Z-scheme mechanism of AgBr/CuBi 2 O 4 and type II mechanism of AgI/CuBi 2 O 4 heterojunction photocatalysts were tentatively discussed, respectively., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Mono-dispersed copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were constructed using cheap polysaccharides (citrus pectin, chitosan, and sodium alginate), and by appropriating aqueous fermented fenugreek powder (FFP) under the action of Pleurotus ostreatus (as reducing and preserving means), through the influence of gamma irradiation. The synthesized CuNPs are described by UV-Vis. spectroscopy TEM, DLS, XRD, and FT-IR. XRD study of the CuNPs confirmed the generation of metallic CuNPs. The nucleation and the production mechanism of CuNPs are moreover explained. TEM unveiled that, the ordinary diameter of CuNPs incorporated by various polysaccharides, and FFP taken in the range of 31.0 and 36.0 nm respectively. CuNPs size is influenced by many parameters such as the variety of stabilizer, pH within the organization and applied gamma dose. Evaluation of the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of CuNPs was performed against some selected wound pathogens. The results showed that, CuNPs were a strong antimicrobial agents against microbes caused burn skin infection such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans (16.0, 15.0, and 15.0 mm ZOI, respectively). Additionally, CuNPs have a strong antioxidant with 70% scavenging activity against DPPH. So, due to unique characteristics of CuNPs (cost-effective with continued-term stabilization and effective features), they can recover reasonable potential in biomedical, industrial, agricultural, cosmetics, dermal products and pharmaceutical purposes., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. We proposed the use of copper (Cu) doping to modify the mechanical properties of gold nanorods (AuNRs) and demonstrated the triggering of the cytotoxicity of Cu-doped AuNRs with ultrasonic wave. The mechanical properties of Cu-doped AuNRs were analyzed theoretically by using the density-function calculation and it was found that Cu-Au bond is much weaker than Au-Au bond. In experiments, AuNRs without and with Cu doping were synthesized and they were found to be low cytotoxic to both human liver hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells and normal liver cells (L02). It was found that Cu-doped AuNRs can be broken into small gold nanoparticles (<5 nm) under high-power ultrasonic wave while undoped AuNRs were quite stable, although the amount of Cu doped into AuNRs was quite small (0.2%). The small gold nanoparticles are found to be with high toxicity to HepG2 cells. The cellular viability of the HepG2 cells dropped to nearly zero after being incubated with Cu-doped AuNRs (50 nM), which had been treated with a 300-W ultrasonic wave. Bare and photosensitized copper iodides were tested in photocatalysed degradation of an organic dye (Acid Red 1) and inactivation of fungi (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). CuI, with the band gap energy slightly lower than that of TiO 2 , appeared to be highly efficient in these processes. Sensitization of copper iodide was achieved by surface modification with [Cu(SCN) 2 (phen) 2 ]. The photosensitization mechanism encompasses a metal to metal charge transfer, Cu I → Cu II . The applied photosensitizer binds to CuI through thiocyanate ligands resulting in the formation of an active Cu II /Cu I hybrid photocatalyst ([Cu II (SCN) 2 (phen) 2 ]@Cu I I). Its absorption edge is red shifted towards a lower energy when compared with bare CuI, resulting in enhanced visible light induced photocatalytic activity. The studied materials appeared to be photoactive in current generation, degradation of organic compounds and inactivation of fungi.

A p-n junction based Cu2O-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays (Cu2O-TNAs) were synthesized and used as a working anode in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system. The results revealed that the Cu2O-TNAs were dominated by the anatase phase and responded significantly to visible light. XPS analyses indicated that with an amount of 24.79% Cu doping into the structure, the band gap of Cu2O-TNAs was greatly reduced. SEM images revealed that the supported TiO2 nanotubes had diameters of approximately 80nm and lengths of about 2.63μm. Upon doping with Cu2O, the TiO2 nanotubes maintained their structural integrity, exhibiting no significant morphological change, favoring PEC applications. Under illumination, the photocurrent from Cu2O/TNAs was 2.4 times larger than that from TNAs, implying that doping with Cu2O significantly improved electron mobility by reducing the rate of recombination of electron-hole pairs. The EIS and Bode plot revealed that the estimated electron lifetimes, τel, of TNAs and Cu2O/TNAs were 6.91 and 26.26ms, respectively. In this study, [2-(2-morpholin-4-ylethoxy)ethoxy] group substituted zinc(ii), manganese(iii) and copper(ii) phthalocyanines 2-4 and their water soluble derivatives 2a, 3a and 4a were synthesized and the interactions of compounds 2a, 3a and 4a with CT-DNA and supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA were investigated. The results of binding experiments showed that these compounds were able to interact with CT-DNA via intercalative mode with a strong binding affinity in the order 3a > 2a > 4a. DNA-photocleavage activities of compounds 2a, 3a and 4a were determined. These compounds cleaved supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA efficiently under irradiation at 650 nm for 2a and 4a, and at 750 nm for 3a. These compounds displayed remarkable inhibitory activities against topoisomerase I enzyme in a dose-dependent manner. All of these results suggest that these phthalocyanines might be suitable anticancer agents due to their strong binding affinities, significant cleavage activities and effective topoisomerase I inhibition.

Symmetries are the underlying principles of fundamental interactions in nature. Chaos in a quantum system may emerge from breaking these symmetries. Compared to vacuum, crystals are attractive for studying quantum chaos, as they not only break spatial isotropy, but also lead to novel quasiparticles with modified interactions. Here we study yellow Rydberg excitons in cuprous oxide which couple strongly to the vacuum light field and interact significantly with crystal phonons, leading to inversion symmetry breaking. In a magnetic field, time-reversal symmetry is also broken and the exciton states show a complex splitting pattern, resulting in quadratic level repulsion for small splittings. In contrast to atomic chaotic systems in a magnetic field, which show only a linear level repulsion, this is a signature of a system where all anti-unitary symmetries are broken simultaneously. This behaviour can otherwise be found only for the electro-weak interaction or engineered billiards.

Exploiting photocatalysts respond to visible light is of huge challenge for photocatalytic H2 production. Here, we synthesize a new composite material consisting of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets grown on CuInS2 surface as an efficient photocatalyst for solar H2 generation. The photocatalytic results demonstrate that the 3 wt % MoS2 /CuInS2 photocatalyst exhibits the highest H2 generation rate of 316 μmol h(-1)  g(-1) under visible light irradiation, which is almost 28 times higher than that of CuInS2 . Importantly, the MoS2 /CuInS2 photocatalyst shows a much higher photocatalytic activity than that of Pt-loaded CuInS2 photocatalyst. The enhanced photocatalytic activities of MoS2 /CuInS2 photocatalysts can be attributed to the improved charge separation at the interface of MoS2 and CuInS2, which is demonstrated by the significant enhancement of photocurrent responses in MoS2 /CuInS2 photoelectrodes. BaTiO3/Cu2O and BaTiO3/Cu2O/Au complexes were prepared from CuCl2, HAuCl4 solution, and BaTiO3 by the solution method. BaTiO3 particles were dispersed in a CuCl2 solution, and the BaTiO3/CuO complex was produced through crystallization of CuO onto the BaTiO3 surface by hydrolysis of CuCl2 in the first stage. After the reaction, CuO was reduced to Cu2O by treatment with glucose, thereby yielding the BaTiO3/Cu2O complex. The BaTiO3/Cu2O/Au complex was prepared by treating the BaTiO3/Cu2O particles with HAuCl4. Under visible light, the obtained BaTiO3/Cu2O0/Au complex showed higher photocatalytic activity than the Degussa P-25sample. In addition, the BaTiO3/Cu2O complex showed excellent antipathogenic effect.

Assisted by three-dimensional printing technology, we proposed and demonstrated a full spectrum visible light activated antibacterial system by using a combination of 500 nm sized Cu2O crystals and light-emitting diode (LED) lamps. Further improved antibacterial ratios were achieved, for the first time, with pure Cu2O for both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria among all of the six different color LED lamps. For practical antibacterial applications, we revealed that the nonwoven fabric could act as excellent carrier for Cu2O crystals and provide impressive antibacterial performance. Furthermore, integrated with our self-developed app, the poly(ethylene terephthalate) film loaded with Cu2O crystals also showed significant antibacterial property, thus making it possible to be applied in field of touch screen. The present research not only provided a healthier alternative to traditional ultraviolet-based sterilization but also opened an auto-response manner to decrease the rate of microbial contamination on billions of touch screen devices.

Quantitative comparison of different aqueous media on the phototoxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) is crucial for understanding their ecological effects. In this study, the phototoxicity of CuO NPs toward the green fluorescent protein-expressing Escherichia coli (GFP-E. coli) under UV irradiation (365 nm) was investigated in Luria-Bertani medium (LB), NaCl solution, deionized water (DI) and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The phototoxicity of CuO NPs toward GFP-E. coli decreased in the order of DI>NaCl>PBS>LB because of different released concentrations of Cu(2+). The 3h released Cu(2+) concentrations by 10mg/L CuO NPs in DI water, NaCl solution, LB medium, and PBS were 1946.3 ± 75.6, 1242.5 ± 47.6, 1023.4 ± 41.2, and 1162.1 ± 41.9 μg/L, respectively. Transmission electron microscope and laser scanning confocal microscope images of E. coli exposed to CuO NPs demonstrated that the released Cu(2+) resulted in fragmentation of bacterial cell walls, leakage of intracellular components, and finally death of bacteria in four media after UV light irradiation. In each medium, the bacterial mortality rate logarithmically increased with the releasing concentrations of Cu(2+) by CuO NPs (R(2)>0.90) exposed to 3h UV light. Cross-section calculations and transport models for Monte Carlo track structure codes are discussed as well as the simulation of secondary electron emission yields from thin metal foils. A simple and facile method was developed to synthesize well-dispersed cuprous oxide nanospheres with uniform morphology and the size in the range of 400-600 nm. Cuprous oxide nanospheres were obtained through the chemical reduction of copper acetate by fructose in the presence of ethylene glycol and de-ionized water. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to characterize the obtained nanoparticles. The influence of time, temperature and the solvent on the formation of cuprous oxide was investigated. The growth process of cuprous oxide was analyzed and the mechanism of crystal growth was proposed. The photocatalytic activity of degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation was also investigated. It was found that the product of cuprous oxide had efficient catalytic for degradation MO.

A size and shape tuned, multifunctional metal chalcogenide, Cu2S-based nanotheranostic agent is developed for trimodal imaging and multimodal therapeutics against brain cancer cells. This theranostic agent was highly efficient in optical, photoacoustic and X-ray contrast imaging systems. The folate targeted NIR-responsive photothermal ablation in synergism with the chemotherapeutic action of doxorubicin proved to be a rapid precision guided cancer-killing module. The multi-stimuli, i.e., pH-, thermo- and photo-responsive drug release behavior of the nanoconjugates opens up a wider corridor for on-demand triggered drug administration. The simple synthesis protocol, combined with the multitudes of interesting features packed into a single nanoformulation, clearly demonstrates the competing role of this Cu2S nanosystem in future cancer treatment strategies.

The catalytic role of Cu(II) in the reduction of Cr(VI) by citric acid with simulated solar light was investigated. The results demonstrated that Cu(II) could significantly accelerate Cr(VI) reduction and the reaction obeyed to pseudo zero-order kinetics with respect to Cr(VI). The removal of Cr(VI) was related to the initial concentrations of Cu(II), citric acid, and the types of organic acids. The optimal removal of Cr(VI) was achieved at pH 4, and the rates of Cu(II) photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by organic acids were in the order: tartaric acid (two α-OH groups, two -COOH groups)>citric acid (one α-OH group, three -COOH groups)>malic acid (one α-OH group, two -COOH groups)>lactic acid (one α-OH group, one -COOH group)≫succinic acid (two -COOH groups), suggesting that the number of α-OH was the key factor for the reaction, followed by the number of -COOH. The formation of Cu(II)-citric acid complex could generate Cu(I) and radicals through a pathway of metal-ligand-electron transfer, promoting the reduction of Cr(VI). Simultaneous photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation of cyanides and recovery of copper in a PEC reactor with a Bi(2)MoO(6) photoanode was investigated at alkaline conditions under visible light irradiation. The surface variation of the Bi(2)MoO(6) photoanode and titanium cathode was characterized. The Cu mass distribution onto the anode, in the solution, and onto the cathode was fully investigated. In the individual PEC oxidation of copper cyanides, the formation of a black copper oxide on the anode occurred. By keeping the initial cyanide concentration at 0.01 mM, the effect of EDTA/K(4)P(2)O(7) was examined at different molar ratios of EDTA/K(4)P(2)O(7) to cyanide. It was indicated that the oxidation of cyanides increased and simultaneous copper electrodeposition with zero value onto the cathode was feasible at pH 11. Under the optimal conditions, the total cyanide concentration was lowered from 250 to 5.0 mg/L, and the Cu recovery efficiency deposited onto the cathode was higher than 90%. Cyanate was the only product. The role of the photogenerated hole in the oxidation of cyanide ions was confirmed.

The 3-D thermoluminescence spectra and glow curves of LiF:Mg,Cu,Si, LiF:Mg,Cu, LiF:Mg,Si and LiF:Cu,Si with low concentrations of Mg and Cu were measured and were compared with those with high concentrations to investigate further the role of dopants in LiF:Mg,Cu,Si material. The shape of glow curves of the four samples is similar; however, LiF:Cu,Si sample had no Mg dopant. It is concluded that the TL emission to be from self-trapped excitons in LiF, and this emission could be enhanced and altered by Mg, Cu and Si dopants in LiF:Mg,Cu,Si; all three dopants are necessary to obtain the bright TL emission and may be involved in the luminescence process; Mg seems to be the most essential dopant and Cu is involved in the trapping although the role of Mg dominates; both Cu and Si play a role in the main emission process and Cu also plays a role in reducing the emission around 610 nm., (© The Author 2014. (99)Mo photonuclear yield was measured using high-energy electrons from Laser Plasma Accelerators and natural molybdenum. Spectroscopically resolved electron beams allow comparisons to Monte Carlo calculations using known (100)Mo(γ,n)(99)Mo cross sections. Yields are consistent with published low-energy data, and higher energy data are well predicted from the calculations. The measured yield is (15±2)×10(-5) atoms/electron (0.92±0.11 GBq/μA) for 25 mm targets at 33.7 MeV, rising to (1391±20)×10(-5) atoms/electron (87±2 GBq/μA) for 54 mm/ 1.7 GeV, with peak power-normalized yield at 150 MeV., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The relationships between D, K and Kcol are of fundamental importance in radiation dosimetry. These relationships are critically influenced by secondary electron transport, which makes Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation indispensable; we have used MC codes DOSRZnrc and FLURZnrc. Computations of the ratios D/K and D/Kcol in three materials (water, aluminum and copper) for large field sizes with energies from 50 keV to 25 MeV (including 6-15 MV) are presented. Beyond the depth of maximum dose D/K is almost always less than or equal to unity and D/Kcol greater than unity, and these ratios are virtually constant with increasing depth. The difference between K and Kcol increases with energy and with the atomic number of the irradiated materials. D/K in 'sub-equilibrium' small megavoltage photon fields decreases rapidly with decreasing field size. A simple analytical expression for X̅, the distance 'upstream' from a given voxel to the mean origin of the secondary electrons depositing their energy in this voxel, is proposed: X̅(emp) ≈ 0.5R(csda)(E̅(0)), where E̅(0) is the mean initial secondary electron energy. These X̅(emp) agree well with 'exact' MC-derived values for photon energies from 5-25 MeV for water and aluminum. An analytical expression for D/K is also presented and evaluated for 50 keV-25 MeV photons in the three materials, showing close agreement with the MC-derived values.
