A rapid practical new synthesis of multi-substituted pyrrole derivatives with high yields through a novel four-component reaction of sulfonyl azides, terminal alkynes, nitro compounds, and trichloroacetonitril is a remarkable achievement in organic chemistry. This strategy offers a direct and efficient route to access complex molecular structures from readily available starting materials. To expand the work, the reaction of the final product with sulfinate salt under simple conditions and room temperature, poly-substituted pyrroles with sulfone functional group are formed. The combination of available starting materials, catalytic systems, mild reaction conditions, and ease of purification procedures contributes to the attractiveness of this method for the synthesis of diverse multi-substituted pyrrole derivatives. The development of efficient materials for selective and efficient sensing of toxic gases and volatile organic compounds is highly desired, especially for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnosis. Herein, we report two distinct coordination polymers, 2D CuTz1 and 1D CuTz2, synthesized from the same reactant under similar conditions but in varying ratios. Remarkably, 2D CuTz1 features a unique Cu4I4 secondary building unit (SBU), while CuTz2 has a rhomboid Cu2I2 SBU. The 2D CuTz1 was found to be green emissive and semiconducting in nature and exhibits a 2D nanoflake-like morphology. Further, CuTz1 not only shows the change in emission color from green to yellow-orange in the presence of aqueous ammonia vapor, but also, the chemiresistive sensor derived from CuTz1 shows exceptional ammonia sensing capabilities. Excellent sensitivity and selectivity, accompanied by fast dynamic response/recovery time, positions CuTz1 as the most promising material among the reported MOF/CP-based ammonia sensors. In this work, cotton fabric (Ct) impregnated with nanocellulose (NC) was used to create an environmentally friendly, biocompatible and biodegradable elastic and water-repellent smart textile. For its manufacture, an inexpensive nanocellulose hydrogel was obtained by the method of TEMPO-mediated oxidation of an organosolv pulp from stalks of non-wood widespread wild-growing perennial cereal common reed. Then, an 8 µm thick nanostructured layer of promising non-toxic and earth-abundant copper(I) iodide (CuI) thermoelectric semiconductor was deposited by the Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) chemical solution method on the composite Ct/NC fabric. Thus, a smart Ct/NC/CuI thermoelectric textile was obtained. Studies of the crystal structure by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microanalysis and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), and surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed high adhesion of NC to Ct, good absorption of NC by cotton fiber, and penetration of NC into the inner part of Ct fiber, which is important for strengthening and hydrophobization of cotton. Experimental measurements of the thermoelectric parameters of Ct/NC/CuI textile revealed a Seebeck coefficient of 115 μV/K, a conductivity of 4.96 S/cm, a thermoelectric power factor at near room temperatures of 6.56 μW/(m K2), and a specific thermoelectric power 4.5 µW/cm2. These indicators of thermoelectric efficiency allow the Ct/NC/CuI textile obtained here to become the basis for an efficient body-heat-harvesting thermoelectric nanogenerator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

These findings indicate that these thin films hold promise for applications as sensors (with sensitive and reversible detection capability) for volatile halogen-based compounds (VHC). Fungal infections have become a significant public health concern due to their increasing recurrence and harmful effects on plants, animals, and humans. Opportunistic pathogens (among others from the genera Candida and Aspergillus) can be present in indoor air, becoming a risk for people with suppressed immune systems. Engineered nanomaterials are novel alternatives to traditional antifungal therapy. In this work, copper(I) iodide (CuI) and a copper-doped titanium dioxide—copper(I) iodide (TiO2-Cu2+/CuI) composite nanomaterials (NMs)—were synthesized and tested as antifungal agents. The materials were synthesized using sol-gel (TiO2-Cu2+) and co-precipitation (CuI) techniques. The resulting colloids were evaluated as antifungal agents against Candida parapsilosis and Aspergillus niger strains. The NMs were characterized by XRD, HRTEM, AFM, and DLS to evaluate their physicochemical properties. The NMs present a high size dispersion and different geometrical shapes of agglomerates. The antifungal capacity of the NMs by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) was below 15 µg/mL against Candida parapsilosis and below 600 µg/mL against Aspergillus niger for both NMs. Holotomography microscopy showed that the NMs could penetrate cell membranes causing cell death through its rupture and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Cytotoxicity tests showed that NMs could be safe to use at low concentrations. The synthesized nanomaterials could be potential antifungal agents for biomedical or environmental applications. CuI‐mediated 11C‐cyanation was evaluated by synthesizing [11C]perampanel ([11C]5) as a model compound and compared with previous reports. To a DMF solution with 5′‐(2‐bromophenyl)‐1′‐phenyl‐[2,3′‐bipyridin]‐6′(1′H)‐one (4) and CuI, [11C]NH4CN in a stream of ammonia/nitrogen (5:95, v/v) gas was bubbled. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was heated at 180°C for 5 min. After HPLC purification, [11C]5 was obtained in 7.2 ± 1.0% (n = 4) non‐decay corrected radiochemical yield with >99% radiochemical purity and a molar activity of 98 ± 28 GBq/μmol. In vivo evaluations of [11C]5 were performed using small animals. PET scans to check the kinetics of [11C]5 in the whole body of mice suggested that [11C]5 spreads rapidly into the brain, heart, and lungs and then accumulates in the small intestine. To evaluate the performance of CuI‐mediated 11C‐cyanation reaction, bromobenzene (6a) was selected as the model compound; however, it failed. Therefore, optimization of the reaction conditions has been performed, and consequently, the addition of K2CO3 and prolonging the reaction time improved the radiochemical yield about double. With this improved method, CuI‐mediated 11C‐cyanation of various (hetero)aromatic bromides was performed to exhibit the tolerance of most functional groups and to provide 11C‐cyanated products in good to moderate radiochemical yields. Thietanes are vital aliphatic four-membered rings associated with various pharmaceuticals, building blocks and synthons of intermediates used in the total synthesis of natural products and biomolecules. Also, 4-thiazolidinone is a core pharmacophore of many drug molecules. Based on their various applications in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis, an effort has been made to achieve a thietane ring on 4-thiazolidinone nucleus via quasi-benzylic acid-type intramolecular rearrangement using elemental sulfur, benzyl bromide and Cu(I). The designed methodology is environmentally benign, cheap, and easily accessible, with a broad range of substrate scopes and carried out by the employment of earth-abundant metal catalysts like copper. Abstract Copper iodide (CuI) is a high‐performance p‐type transparent semiconductor that can be used in numerous applications, such as transistors, diodes, and solar cells. However, the lack of conformal and scalable methods to deposit CuI thin films limits its establishment in applications that involve complex‐shaped and/or large substrate areas. In this work, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is employed to enable scalable and conformal thin film deposition. A two‐step approach relying on ALD of CuO and its subsequent conversion to CuI via exposure to HI vapor at room temperature is demonstrated. The resulting CuI films are phase‐pure, uniform, and of high purity. Furthermore, CuI films on several substrates such as Si, amorphous Al2O3, n‐type TiO2, and γ‐CsPbI3 perovskite are prepared. With the resulting n‐TiO2/p‐CuI structure, the easy and straightforward fabrication of a diode structure as a proof‐of‐concept device is demonstrated. Moreover, the successful deposition of CuI on γ‐CsPbI3 proves the compatibility of the process for using CuI as the hole transport layer in perovskite solar cell applications in the nip‐configuration. It is believed that the ALD‐based approach described in this work will offer a viable alternative for depositing transparent conductive p‐type CuI thin films in applications that involve complex high aspect ratio structures and large substrate areas.

Background. The synthesis of low-toxic heterocyclic compounds, the study of their biological activity and the search for substances with pharmacological activity are relevant. Studies are being carried out with five-membered heterocyclic compounds containing 3 nitrogen atoms. Among them there are preparations with herbicidal, fungicidal, insecticidal activity. Purpose. Synthesis of ortho-propargyloxybenzaldehyde, aromatic azides, (2-((1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3,-triazol-4-yl)methoxy)) benzaldehyde and its derivatives based on the reaction of mutual 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with participation of the Cu2I2 catalyst. Analysis of the structure of the obtained substances. Methodology. Ortho-propargyloxybenzaldehyde was synthesized based on salicylaldehyde and propargyl bromide. The reactions of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the obtained substance with some aromatic azides in the presence of a catalyst were studied. 2-((1-Phenyl-1H-1,2,3,-triazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde derivatives were obtained, the structure of which was proved by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectral methods. Originality. Derivatives of 2-((1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde were synthesized for the first time on the basis of mutual cycloaddition reactions of orthopropargyloxybenzaldehyde and some aromatic azides. It has been proven that only 1,4-isomers are formed during the reaction under the influence of a copper (I) iodide catalyst. The factors influencing the course of the reaction were determined. Findings. 2-((1-Phenyl-1Н-1,2,3,-triazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde derivatives were synthesized in higher yields. Copper(I) iodide complexes are well known for displaying a diverse array of structural features even when only small changes in ligand design are made. This structural diversity is well displayed by five copper(I) iodide compounds reported here with closely related piperidine-2,6-dithione (SNS), isoindoline-1,3-dithione (SNS6), and 6-thioxopiperidin-2-one (SNO) ligands: di-μ-iodido-bis[(acetonitrile-κN)(6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κS)copper(I)], [Cu2I2(CH3CN)2(C5H7NOS)2] (I), bis(acetonitrile-κN)tetra-μ3-iodido-bis(6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κS)-tetrahedro-tetracopper(I), [Cu4I4(CH3CN)4(C5H7NOS)4] (II), catena-poly[[(μ-6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ2O:S)copper(I)]-μ3-iodido], [CuI(C5H7NOS)]n (III), poly[[(piperidine-2,6-dithione-κS)copper(I)]-μ3-iodido], [CuI(C5H7NS2)]n (IV), and poly[[(μ-isoindoline-1,3-dithione-κ2S:S)copper(I)]-μ3-iodido], [CuI(C8H5NS2)]n (V). Compounds I and II crystallize as discrete dimeric and tetrameric complexes, whereas III, IV, and V crystallize as polymeric two-dimensional sheets. To the best of our knowledge, compound III is the first instance of an extended hexagonal [Cu3I3] structure that is not supported by bridging ligands. Structures I, II, and IV display weak to moderately strong Cu...Cu cuprophilic interactions [Cu...Cu internuclear distances range between 2.5803 (10) and 2.8485 (14) Å]. All structures except III display weak hydrogen-bonding interactions between the N—H of the ligand and the μ2 and μ3-I− atoms. Structure III contains classical N–H...O interactions between the SNO ligands that connect the molecules in a three-dimensional framework. Complex V features π–π stacking interactions between the aryl rings of the SNS6 ligands within the same polymeric sheet. In structure IV, there were three partially occupied solvent molecules of dichloromethane and one partially occupied molecule of acetonitrile present in the asymmetric unit. The SQUEEZE routine [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18] was used to correct the diffraction data for diffuse scattering effects and to identify the solvent molecules. [Display omitted] 1D coordination polymers [Cu 2 I 2 (AsPh 3) 2 (L)] n (L = 4,4 ' -bi-pyridine, pyrazine) were synthesized via the reaction of CuI with AsPh 3 and N , N' -ditopic co-ligand s L. Two copper(I) iodide tetramers, namely, [μ2‐1,3‐bis(diphenylphosphanyl)propane‐κ2P:P′]di‐μ3‐iodido‐di‐μ2‐iodido‐[1‐(pyridin‐3‐yl)ethan‐1‐one‐κN]tetracopper(I) dichloromethane disolvate, [Cu4I4(C6H7NO)2(C27H26P2)2]·2CH2Cl2 (CuL3), and [μ2‐1,3‐bis(diphenylphosphanyl)propane‐κ2P:P′]di‐μ3‐iodido‐di‐μ2‐iodido‐[1‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)ethan‐1‐one‐κN]tetracopper(I), [Cu4I4(C6H7NO)2(C27H26P2)2] (CuL4), have been synthesized from reactions of CuI, 1,3‐bis(diphenylphosphanyl)propane (dppp) and 3‐ or 4‐acetylpyridine (3/4‐acepy). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (XRD), powder XRD and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Both complexes possess a stair‐step [Cu4I4] cluster structure with a crystallographic inversion centre located in the middle of a Cu2I2 ring (Z′ =). The dppp ligands each adopt a bidentate coordination mode that bridges two CuI centres on one side of the [Cu4I4] cluster and the acepy ligands act as terminal ligands. The solid‐state samples of similar complexes show highly efficiency thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) at room temperature. At ambient temperature, both CuL3 and CuL4 exhibit photoluminescence, with a maximum emission in the region 560–580 nm and with short emissive decay times, but only phosphorescence was observed at 77 K. The narrow gaps between the higher lying singlet state and the triplet state, ΔE(S1 − T1), also confirm the presence of TADF. Structure analysis and consideration of photoluminescence indicates that the position of the acetyl group on the heterocyclic ligand has an obvious influence on the structural arrangement, on intermolecular interactions and on the observed photophysical properties. The reaction of ligand 3,4,8,10,11,13-hexahydro-1H,6H-bis([1,4]dithiocino)[6,7-b:6′,7′-e]pyrazine (L) with CuI led to the formation of a two-dimensional coordination polymer, incorporating a [Cu2I2] motif. These units are linked via the four S atoms of the ligand to form the title two-dimensional coordination polymer, poly[[μ4-3,4,8,10,11,13-hexahydro-1H,6H-bis([1,4]dithiocino)[6,7-b:6′,7′-e]pyrazine]di-μ-iodido-dicopper(I)], [Cu2I2(C12H16N2S4)]n, (I). The asymmetric unit is composed of a ligand molecule, two copper(I) atoms and two I− ions. Both copper(I) atoms are fourfold S2I2 coordinate with almost regular trigonal-pyramidal environments. In the crystal, the layers, lying parallel to (102), are linked by C—H...I hydrogen bonds, forming a supramolecular framework.

The reaction of ligand 5,7-dihydro-1H,3H-dithieno[3,4-b:3′,4′-e]pyrazine (L) with CuI lead to the formation of a three-dimensional coordination polymer, incorporating the well known [CuxIx]n staircase motif (x = 4). These polymer [Cu4I4]n chains are linked via the N and S atoms of the ligand to form the three-dimensional coordination polymer poly[(μ4-5,7-dihydro-1H,3H-dithieno[3,4-b:3′,4′-e]pyrazine-κ4N:N′:S:S′)tetra-μ3-iodido-tetracopper], [Cu4I4(C8H8N2S2)]n (I). The asymmetric unit is composed of half a ligand molecule, with the pyrazine ring located about a center of symmetry, and two independent copper(I) atoms and two independent I− ions forming the staircase motif via centers of inversion symmetry. The framework is consolidated by C—H...I hydrogen bonds.

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical investigations of CuI complexes with a disilanylene-bridged bispyridine ligand 1 are herein presented. Dinuclear (2) and ladder-like (3) octanuclear copper(I) complexes were straightforwardly prepared by exactly controlling the ratio of CuI/ligand 1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed that dinuclear complex 2 had no apparent π…π stacking whereas octanuclear complex 3 had π…π stacking in the crystal packing. In the solid state, the complexes display yellow-green (λem = 519 nm, Φ = 0.60, τ = 11 µs, 2) and blue (λem = 478 nm, Φ = 0.04, τ = 2.6 µs, 3) phosphorescence, respectively. The density functional theory calculations validate the differences in their optical properties. The difference in the luminescence efficiency between 2 and 3 is attributed to the presence of π…π stacking and the different luminescence processes.

The reaction of copper(I) iodide with 1-[2-(cyclohexylsulfanyl)ethyl]pyridin-2(1H)-one (L, C13H19NOS) in acetonitrile/dichloromethane results in a crystalline coordination polymer, namely poly[bis{μ2-1-[2-(cyclohexylsulfanyl)ethyl]pyridin-2(1H)-one}tetra-μ3-iodidotetracopper(I)], [Cu4I4L2]n. The asymmetric unit comprises two ligand molecules, four copper(I) ions and four iodide ions. Interestingly, the O atoms are bound to the soft copper(I) ions. The stair-step clusters of Cu and I atoms in the asymmetric unit are linked repeatedly, giving rise to infinite chains along [100]. Neighbouring infinite chains are linked through the L molecules, forming a two-dimensional brick-wall structure. These two-dimensional networks are stacked alternately along [001]. Additionally, there are intermolecular C—H...I hydrogen bonds and C—H...π interactions between the ligands.

A copper(I) iodine catalyzed sulfenylation of 1,3-dicarbonyl substrates in the presence of MeCN is presented. Various β-keto esters and β-keto amide substrates can react with disulfides to afford their corresponding products in good to excellent yields. A double Ullmann coupling reaction successfully takes place between 4,5-diaryl-2-(2-bromophenyl)-1 H -imidazoles and 2-bromophenols in the presence of Cs2 CO3. This procedure is catalyzed by copper(I) iodide and o -phenanthroline and provides an efficient method for the synthesis of dibenzo[ b , f ]imidazo[1,2- d ][1,4]oxazepine derivatives in good yields. A novel and convenient copper(I)-catalyzed thiolation of C-H bonds of pyrroles and indoles is developed for the synthesis of sulfenyl pyrroles and indoles. Dual C-H thiolation reactions are observed for pyrroles. A wide range of pyrroles and indoles undergo the C-H thiolation smoothly with various disulfides and diselenides to generate the corresponding heteroaryl thioethers in moderate to excellent yields. Two products of the reactions of CuI with 1‐benzoyl‐3‐(4‐bromophenyl)thiourea and with 1‐benzoyl‐3‐(2‐iodophenyl)thiourea have been obtained and characterized, namely poly[[[1‐benzoyl‐3‐(4‐bromophenyl)thiourea‐κS]‐μ3‐iodido‐copper(I)] acetone hemisolvate], {[CuI(C14H11BrN2OS)]·0.5C3H6O}n, and poly[μ4‐iodido‐μ3‐iodido‐[N‐(benzo[d]thiazol‐2‐yl)benzamide‐κN]dicopper(I)], [Cu2I2(C14H10N2OS)]n. Their structures, determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis, exhibit different stoichiometries and molecular organizations; however, both compounds are polymeric and possess close Cu...Cu contacts. The first product contains a (CuI)n double chain supported by the thiourea derivative coordinated via the S atom. In the second case, the ligand undergoes dehalogenation and cyclization to form N‐(benzo[d]thiazol‐2‐yl)benzamide that serves as the N‐donor ligand which is connected to both sides of a (CuI)n quadruple chain. In both hybrid inorganic chains, I atoms bridge three or four Cu atoms. The coordination centres adopt more or less distorted tetrahedral geometries. The structures of the (CuI)n kernels of the ribbons are similar to fragments of the layers in high‐pressure phase V copper(I) iodide. Only weak S...O, C—H...O, C—H...I and π–π interactions hold the ribbons together, allowing the formation of crystals. Double and quadruple ribbons of copper(I) iodide coordinated with thiourea‐derived organic ligands have been synthesized and characterized. The CuI atom is coordinated by two S atoms and two I atoms, adopting a distorted tetrahedral environment. The μ2-bridging mode of the I atoms gives rise to chains extending parallel to [010]. C—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions between the chains lead to a three-dimensional network.

A practical and efficient strategy for the chemoselective C–S cross-coupling of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole derivatives with a range of substituted aryl iodides is described. Under the optimized conditions of 5 mol% CuI and 100 °C, a variety of S-arylated products were obtained in good to excellent yields (up to 92 %) without the need for assisting ligands. A concise one-pot three-component reaction of organic halides, terminal acetylenes, and sodium azide provided an efficient route for the synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles. A new one-dimensional coordination polymer, [Cu I I(3-Py-CHO)] n (3-Py-CHO = 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde), consisting of an infinite copper(I)-iodide ladder chain and a pendant ligand, 3-Py-CHO, was prepared and structurally characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis. This material shows semiconducting properties with a relatively small activation energy, as shown by impedance measurements. We report on a new crystal modification of (CuIPy) (Py = pyridine), a compound first reported by White et al. In contrast to White's orthorhombic structure, which is comprised of rhomboid iodide-bridged dimers, CuIPy, our new tetragonal crystal structure in space group P422 is disordered and can be interpreted as either iodide-bridged dimers or helical chains. To determine the structure type, variable temperature X-ray diffraction and luminescence measurements were carried out. The photoluminescence spectrum shows a distinct cluster-centered transition at high excitation energies which is consistent with the dimer structure. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed to explain the difference between the emission spectrum at high energies compared to low energies. Furthermore, correlation of the luminescence spectrum with the X-ray results as temperature is varied demonstrates that the cluster-centered luminescence band in CuIPy arises from close Cu⋯Cu distances which vary with temperature. A low temperature X-ray crystallographic redetermination of the cubane tetrameric CuIPy is also presented. Both CuIPy and CuIPy structures show distortion of the CuI core cluster at low temperature resulting in reduced Cu⋯Cu distances, but with I⋯I distances roughly unchanged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we have focused on the preparation and characterization of copper oxide nanoparticles by solid state thermal decomposition of copper(I) iodide in the presence of thiosemicarbazone ligands without the need for a catalyst, employing toxic solvent, template or surfactant and complicated equipment, which makes it efficient, one-step, simple and environment-friendly. CuO nanoparticles were achieved at 600 ˚C for 3 h as black products and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The FT-IR spectra of black powders prepared show absorption maxima at ≈ 525 cm-1 which are due to Cu-O stretching mode. Also, all the X-ray diffraction peaks could be readily assigned to those of crystalline CuO. The absence of any residual ligand traces or other phases in the FT-IR spectra and XRD patterns confirmed the preparation of high purity and single phase copper oxide nanoparticles. The TEM images show that the synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles are of plate like shape with average diameters of 10 – 20 nm. On the basis of the above results, the use of thiosemicarbazone ligands at the presence of suitable transition metal ions is potentially capable of forming other transition metal oxide nanoparticles by solid state thermal decomposition.

CuI-mediated 11 C-cyanation was evaluated by synthesizing [ 11 C]perampanel ([ 11 C]5) as a model compound and compared with previous reports. To a DMF solution with 5'-(2-bromophenyl)-1'-phenyl-[2,3'-bipyridin]-6'(1'H)-one (4) and CuI, [ 11 C]NH 4 CN in a stream of ammonia/nitrogen (5:95, v/v) gas was bubbled. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was heated at 180°C for 5 min. After HPLC purification, [ 11 C]5 was obtained in 7.2 ± 1.0% (n = 4) non-decay corrected radiochemical yield with >99% radiochemical purity and a molar activity of 98 ± 28 GBq/μmol. In vivo evaluations of [ 11 C]5 were performed using small animals. PET scans to check the kinetics of [ 11 C]5 in the whole body of mice suggested that [ 11 C]5 spreads rapidly into the brain, heart, and lungs and then accumulates in the small intestine. To evaluate the performance of CuI-mediated 11 C-cyanation reaction, bromobenzene (6a) was selected as the model compound; however, it failed. Therefore, optimization of the reaction conditions has been performed, and consequently, the addition of K 2 CO 3 and prolonging the reaction time improved the radiochemical yield about double. With this improved method, CuI-mediated 11 C-cyanation of various (hetero)aromatic bromides was performed to exhibit the tolerance of most functional groups and to provide 11 C-cyanated products in good to moderate radiochemical yields., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

A p-type semiconductor, CuI, has been synthesized, characterized, and tested as a photocatalyst for CO2 reduction under UV/Vis irradiation in presence of isopropanol as a hole scavenger. Formation of CO, CH4, and/or HCOOH was observed. The photocatalytic activity of CuI was attributed to the very low potential of the conduction band edge (i.e., -2.28 V vs. NHE). Photocurrents generated by the studied material confirm a high efficiency of the photoinduced interfacial electrontransfer processes. Our studies show that p-type semiconductors may be effective photocatalysts for CO2 reduction, even better than extensively studied n-type titanium dioxide, owing to the low potential of the conduction band edge.
