Abstract

Water scarcity is a major concern in agriculture worldwide. Fruit trees are severely affected by water deprivation in terms of growth, fruit yield, and quality. Plant monitoring combined with efficient irrigation is pivotal to achieve good quality standards and improve agricultural sustainability. This study reports the use of in vivo sensing technology to monitor fruit tree species continuously, in real time and in vivo, through an Organic Electrochemical Transistor (OECT)-based biosensor called Bioristor. The sensor was applied to grapevines, apples, and kiwis, revealing its capability to trace the plant water status for the whole productive cycle. A correlation between the sensor response index (R) and environmental parameters such as air humidity and temperature were recorded for fruit species. The day/night oscillation of the ionic content in the transpiration stream varies during plant growth and fruit maturation and during severe drought stress. Bioristor promptly detected the occurrence of drought stress. The gate current (Igs) trend supports the reduction in the saturation of the system due to the lower water availability. The use of Bioristor-acquired indices can be used to improve precision irrigation techniques according to the real plant needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. Functionalization effects in vapour-phase grown ZnO nanostructures coupled with CdS nanoparticles

Abstract

It is well known that the enormous potentiality of this ZnO rises not simply from the possibility to combine all its functional properties with the large variety of available ZnO nanostructures, but mainly from the nearly infinite number of possible surface functionalizations by different materials thet can add, modify or improve its intrinsic properties. Authors previously reported about the optimized vapor phase synthesis of different ZnO nanostructures [1-3]. Among the possible functionalizations, a detailed study on cadmium sulphide (CdS) deposition over ZnO nanorods and tetrapods is here reported. At first, a focused optimization of CdS synthesis process have been faced in order to avoid the typical damaging of ZnO surfaces in alkaline solutions, that are generally used for the synthesis of calcogenide nanostructures. This damaging can be responsible, indeed, for bad charge carriers transfer in among the materials coupled in heterojunction. The best results, from has been achieved with a DMFA solution based chemical process that allowed authors to control the heteronucleation of CdS nanoparticles directly on the ZnO surface. Then fundamental and functional characterizations, such as SEM, TEM, XRD, PL, photo-induced currents, photocatalytic activity and gas sensing properties, have been performed in order to study the effects of materials coupling on ZnO chemical and physical properties. In particular, some evidence of excitonic charge transfer and a selective inversion of the response towards specific gases in the obtained CdS-functionalized ZnO nanostructures have been observed and discussed.

Abstract

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures are studied for a large number of applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, gas and bio-sensing, piezoelectric devices, photocatalysis, spintronics, etc. Recently this group has successfully reported the optimized not-catalyzed synthesis processes for producing single morphologies of ZnO nanostructures (i.e. nanowires [1], aligned nanorods [2], and nanotetrapods [3]) among the many different ones that are generally obtained in vapor phase reactions. The proper combination of metal thermal evaporation and controlled oxidation has produced good quality nanostructures, whose properties were not affected by contamination from catalysts or precursors. The great potential of these nanostructures, however, can be fully explored when they are functionalized with different organic or inorganic materials for tailoring ZnO intrinsic properties towards the final application. In this work authors report some meaningful examples of surface functionalization of ZnO nanostructures by inorganic (calcogenides) and organic (phthalocyanines and porphyrins) semiconductors for applications in gas sensing, photovoltaics and photocatalitic degradation of water and gas pollutants. Although different techniques were used (an optimized chemical bath deposition - CBD - process and a supersonic molecular beam deposition - SuMBD - apparatus), in both cases particular attention has been devoted to the interface formation in the coupled compounds, in order to obtain working heterostructures where charge carriers can be efficiently separated and transferred. The obtained functionalized ZnO nanotructures have been characterized by electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical measurements (optical absorption, photoluminescence, and cathodoluminescence). The heterostructure properties have been also studied by functional characterizations such as chemo-resistive gas sensing tests, photocurrent and photocatalytic activity measurements. In particular the CdS/ZnO interface show good optical properties (exciton separation and quench of CdS luminescence), unexpected gas-sensing behavior (enhanced selectivity by inversion of chemoresistive response) and enhanced photocatalytic activity

The correlation between structural and functional properties has then been discussed. In the case of functionalization with CdS, for example, a thickness dependent effect of charge transfer to the ZnO nanostructure has been demonstrated, together with an enhancement of the photocatalytic properties, and the modification of the gas sensing response mechanisms. In the case of functionalization with organics, different emission spectra have been observed together with different morphologies of the obtained depositions. These phenomena have been discussed in terms of distinct molecular bonding of phthalocyanines and porphyrins at the interface with the oxide nanostructures.

32. Microtexturing of the conductive PEDOT:PSS Polymer for superhydrophobic organic electrochemical transistors

Abstract

Superhydrophobic surfaces are bioinspired, nanotechnology artifacts, which feature a reduced friction coefficient, whereby they can be used for a number of very practical applications including, on the medical side, the manipulation of biological solutions. In this work, we integrated superhydrophobic patterns with the conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS, one of the most used polymers in organic electronics because highly sensitive to ionized species in solution. In doing so, we combined geometry and materials science to obtain an advanced device where, on account of the superhydrophobicity of the system, the solutions of interest can be manipulated and, on account of the conductive PEDOT:PSS polymer, the charged molecules dispersed inside can be quantitatively measured. This original substrate preparation allowed to perform electrochemical measurements on ionized species in solution with decreasing concentration down to 10 -7 molar. Moreover, it was demonstrated the ability of the device of realizing specific, combined time and space resolved analysis of the sample. Collectively, these results demonstrate how a tight, interweaving integration of different disciplines can provide realistic tools for the detection of pathologies. Abstract

Recently big efforts have been addressed to the development of techniques for sensing and characterization of nanoparticles (NPs), especially in aqueous environment, due to their possible harmfulness related to their nanometric size. In this work we describe a real time detection of NPs based on organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). OECTs were employed to detect core-shell super-paramagnetic NPs (Fe3O4) functionalized with different polymeric coatings. The OECT response resulted to be a function of the density of NPs suspended in the solution, with sensitivity down to tens of µg/ml. The data, interpreted in terms of the effective gate voltage shift induced by the NPs, indicate that the sensing mechanism is correlated to the electrostatic interaction of NPs with the PEDOT:PSS transistor channel.
