As an Aboriginal activist and writer Alexis Wright ties human-induced destruction of the natural world to justice and rights for Australia's Indigenous people who have been silenced, first by colonialism and subsequently by neoliberalism. Although originating in planning theory, the term 'wicked problem' has come to be applied to climate change because it is a fundamentally complex problem that is itself the symptom of closely interconnected systems. Addressing the analyses of Wright's work necessitates a multidisciplinary approach with political ecology, ecocritical, race, indigeneity, and gender lenses cross-cutting directly and indirectly throughout. None of these approaches are fixed in meaning nor are they uncontested particularly when applied to settler countries such as Australia. Evaluation of the unique novelistic form of Wright's award-winning novels Carpentaria and The Swan Book is achieved by blending Aboriginal oral storytelling and Western rhetorical and literary traditions. However, an Australian Indigenous literary criticism has yet to be fully developed and this casts a colonial shadow over evaluations of Indigenously signed fiction. By applying oral storytelling principles to Wright's novels it is possible to demonstrate how an Aboriginal pedagogical methodology can work productively alongside established critical theory in evaluating Wright's fiction. Reading for affect, that is, the capacity of language to incite sensations and feelings in ways that might shift consciousness, was until recently, neglected, partly because of an association with the primitive, the sacred, and the feminine. Renewed interest in affect argues for it as an analytic of power. This thesis aims to show that by paying attention to Wright's aesthetics her fiction can be read as affective narratives with the potential to shift our (ecological) consciousness and is a necessary response to a warming world.

Distance learning can be understood as a translation of traditional teaching and not just as its imperfect and evanescent copy. This article discusses the possibility for the human and the educative to insinuate themselves and take a solid place within the mental, conceptual and hermeneutic gap that opens up in the virtual space of a logistical but not relational distance, such as that involved in elearning. 4. "It's Just Business": Michael Jackson's Purchase of the Beatles Catalog as Counterpunch, Copia, and Rhythmic Reparations.

- Abstract
According to Black Twitter community members, who were active online just after rock 'n' roll artist Little Richard's passing in 2020, Michael Jackson's purchase of the Beatles catalog (thirty-five years prior) was viewed as what Twitter user and academic author DJ Scholarship calls "rhythmic reparations," offering restitution for Black artists like Little Richard who were never compensated fairly in a white industry. The purchase of Sony/ATV then became more than just a business transaction; it worked rhetorically as a pop culture object to amplify and change narratives about race, music, money, and power. I rely on two concepts of rhetoric—counterpunch and copia—to reexamine language surrounding Jackson's initial purchase and the conversation about Jackson occurring in the wake of Little Richard's death. I also explain how this conversation on Black Twitter led me to revise my knowledge of popular culture and music history and to confront my own white privilege. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A complete telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome has been a longstanding goal in the field of genomic research. By integrating high-coverage and precise long-read sequencing data using multiple assembly strategies, we present here the first T2T gap-free genome assembly of Ganoderma leucocontextum strain GL72, a Tibetan medicinal mushroom. The T2T genome, with a size of 46.69 Mb, consists 13 complete nuclear chromosomes and typical telomeric repeats (CCCTAA)n were detected at both ends of 13 chromosomes. The high mapping rate, uniform genome coverage, a complete BUSCOs of 99.7%, and base accuracy exceeding 99.999% indicate that this assembly represents the highest level of completeness and quality. Regions characterized by distinct structural attributes, including highest Hi-C interaction intensity, high repeat content, decreased gene density, low GC content, and minimal or no transcription levels across all chromosomes may represent potential centromeres. Sequence analysis revealed the first Copia centromeric retrotransposon in macro-fungi genome. Phylogenomic analysis identified that G. leucocontextum and G. tsugae diverged from the other Ganoderma species approximately 9.8–17.9 MYA. The prediction of secondary metabolic clusters confirmed the capability of this fungus to produce a substantial quantity of metabolites. This T2T gap-free genome will contribute to the genomic 'dark matter' elucidation and server as a great reference for genetics, genomics, and evolutionary studies of G. leucocontextum. Conditional gene regulation in Drosophila through binary expression systems like the LexA-LexAop system provides a superb tool for investigating gene and tissue function. To increase the availability of defined LexA enhancer trap insertions, we present molecular, genetic, and tissue expression studies of 301 novel Stan-X LexA enhancer traps derived from mobilization of the index SX4 line. This includes insertions into distinct loci on the X, II, and III chromosomes that were not previously associated with enhancer traps or targeted LexA constructs, an insertion into ptc, and seventeen insertions into natural transposons. A subset of enhancer traps was expressed in CNS neurons known to produce and secrete insulin, an essential regulator of growth, development, and metabolism. Fly lines described here were generated and characterized through studies by students and teachers in an international network of genetics classes at public, independent high schools, and universities serving a diversity of students, including those underrepresented in science. Thus, a unique partnership between secondary schools and university-based programs has produced and characterized novel resources in Drosophila, establishing instructional paradigms devoted to unscripted experimental science. 12. The Long Speech: Rhetorical Abundance in Circulation.

- Abstract
This essay analyzes excessively long speeches in order to argue that circulation naturalizes rhetorical processes that govern meaning within texts. In our view, abundant acts of address unsettle dominant models of speech and circulation, presenting an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between rhetorical forms and circulatory transfigurations. We focus on Strom Thurmond's twenty-four-hour filibuster of the 1957 Civil Rights Act and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's 1927 speech to the Turkish Parliament, which lasted thirty-six hours over six days. We bring together these otherwise unrelated long speeches to outline three fictions of text and circulation: textual unity, speaker persona, and implied audience. We argue that these fictions stand in for the excessive address in circulation and, in turn, forms of circulatory abbreviation naturalize rhetorical constructions internal to the speech. In this way, we offer a rhetorical account of circulation that connects textual processes to circulatory forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article seeks to explain the meaning and function of Mersenne's exhaustive lists of note permutations. As is true for all of Mersenne's labors, the permutations are at their deepest level explicable in terms of his religious commitments—in this case, his faith in the ineffable plenitude of God's creation. Yet, Mersenne also intended the permutations and the combinatorial procedures that generate them to serve as the foundation of a pedagogy of compositional invention. That pedagogy, this article proposes, is tacitly informed by the rhetorical notion of copia, most comprehensively theorized by Erasmus in his influential De copia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Erasmus' sceptical attitude towards the discipline of dialectic in his early writings is well known. In this article, I revisit Erasmus' relationship with the arts of reasoning, tracing a trajectory from The Praise of Folly and De Copia to his final work, Ecclesiastes. Erasmus' treatise on preaching, I suggest, develops a new approach to copious speech and writing by combining the resources of rhetoric and dialectic, in dialogue with the textbooks on the arts of discourse that had appeared in the 25 years since the composition of The Praise of Folly.

This paper reveals the cult of Saint Veronica in the Cathedral of Seville. It was developed around a copy of the Santa Face of Jaén which was donated in 1629 and which aroused great fervour among the faithful, both in its original location in the main sacristy and in the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, where it was placed in 1690 in a silver reliquary, to be replaced in 1739 by the tabernacle that still guards it today.

The article addresses related issues surrounding the artistic biography and production of Gregorio Vásquez, the most important painter of colonial Colombia, active in the latter part of the seventeenth and the first decade of the eighteenth century. Vásquez is a unique figure in Latin American art historiography because local historians researched and wrote about his life and works since at least the nineteenth century. His vast catalogue consists of almost five hundred paintings and includes a unique corpus of over a hundred drawings. Based on published and unpublished primary sources and chronicles, and the analysis of his painterly style and drawing techniques, it is argued that the painter's abundant production and fame were both the means and result of artistic strategies devised by Vásquez and his followers throughout the eighteenth century in order to capitalize on the painter's regional success.

A resposta parece indecidível.

Desiderius Erasmus' "Copia" is not only inscribed with rhetorical interpretations but also implied with semiotic meanings. This paper starts from the definition, components, and functions of "Copia" and then analyzes Nights at the Circus from two aspects: the abundance of expression and the abundance of subject-matter, through discussing the employment of metaphor and antonomasia, the dividing of a whole into parts, and the tracing of causes in this novel. This research finds that the use of "Copia" can not only contribute to the richness and variety of style but also highlight the characters' personalities and enable Angela Carter to discuss political and social issues such as patriarchy and individual rights. From a perspective of Bakhtin's cultural semiotics, the paper aims to explore "Copia" semiotic meanings in literary classics and provide alternative interpretations of this conception in literary criticism. pedagogy ,Women's Studies ,composition ,women writers ,Cavendish ,copia ,Education - Abstract
Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673) lived, wrote, and published during the tumultuous decades of the mid-seventeenth century. With the lingering effects of Renaissance Humanism still guiding the curricular and pedagogical decisions made by the grammar schools and universities of England, the works of Sir Francis Bacon extended learning beyond the literature of the ancients towards inductive reasoning, experiential learning, careful observation, and experimentation. Several educational reformers—including John Amos Comenius and Samuel Hartlib—worked to streamline and systematize these changes through a series of publications and appeals to parliament mid-century. Such reforms, although pushed forward haltingly, resulted in a general expansion of access to education while creating and undergirding disciplinary distinctions related to knowledge creation and distribution. It was amidst these changes, that Cavendish wrote and published her many books. This dissertation examines Cavendish’s engagement with educational reforms by exploring her use of copia as both an aesthetic and a methodology. Cavendish models this linguistic copia, or verbal variety, after her own feminized (and feminist) theory regarding the complexity and abundance of Nature. She presents herself as a role model for women, while actively exploring the many potentialities that she believed ought to exist for all early modern women. This dissertation thus distills and contextualizes Cavendish’s use of copia to argue that in addition to being a prolific published author and natural philosopher, she was also an educational philosopher. As such, Cavendish offers a substantial critique of the extant patriarchal institutions of learning, while advocating for alternate paradigms that would ultimately benefit both sexes. Indeed, Cavendish breaks open the patriarchal traditions of her day and offers pedagogical and curricular alternatives that are demonstrably modern: she does this by advocating for increased access to education, differentiated instruction, scaffolding for the unlearned, and symbolic models for teaching through her texts., As a secondary focus, this dissertation addresses four key pedagogical issues that arise when teaching Cavendish’s expansive corpus: her complicated reception history, her complex and often contradictory authorial persona, the interdisciplinary nature of her writing, and the tremendous size of her corpus and changing access to her many books. By improving access to, and knowledge of, Cavendish’s writing amongst non-specialists, this dissertation plays a role in addressing the persistent inequity of representation between male and female authors in the English literary canon and offers an alternative to the ill-fitting paradigm of masculine authorship commonly taught at the post-secondary level. The flow of chapters follows a logic and methodology of abundance., Chapter One, “Developing a Feminist Pedagogy” makes the case for Cavendish as a feminist pedagogue who developed her own theories of the mind, while repeatedly advocating for women’s education. By contextualizing her place in the development of educational reforms in England, this chapter puts Cavendish in conversation with humanists like Desiderius Erasmus, Sir Thomas More, and Roger Ascham as well as later educational reformers such as Francis Bacon, John Amos Comenius, Samuel Hartlib, and John Milton. In doing so, it argues that Cavendish explored numerous alternatives to what she considered the problematic elitism, tedium, and pointlessness of extant patriarchal models of learning., Chapter Two, “Managing a Mythos” outlines Cavendish’s problematic reception, particularly as it pertains to feminist literary history. It then details the resultant myth of her madness and corrects some of the lingering misconceptions regarding Cavendish and her career. It argues that her long reception history, with the accompanying editorial distortion of her work, has resulted in a lack of critical attention to much of her corpus. In terms of teaching, this means that some of her most compelling work has gone unnoticed by traditional educators., Chapter Three, “Establishing an Authorial Ethos” reveals Cavendish’s strategic use of paratextual materials to redefine female authorship, to establish her authorial ethos as a natural genius, and to present herself as a complex subject, whose books function both as pedagogical tools and her legacy. This chapter argues that her many prefaces and frontispieces are the key to understanding Cavendish’s constructed authorial persona and concludes with a brief discussion regarding Cavendish as a model of a woman’s potential fulfilled., Chapter Four, “Constructing a Theory of Writing and Authorship” delves deeper into Cavendish’s paratextual materials—as well as a few literary texts—to explore the ways in which she challenges the patriarchal traditions of scholasticism, humanism, and the new science while forming her own unique compositional theory situated in creative freedom and abundance. This chapter moves beyond the work of previous scholars—several of whom address the rhetoric of Cavendish’s philosophical treatises—by incorporating a consideration of her prefaces and literary texts. In doing so, this chapter argues that we gain a more complete sense of Cavendish’s compositional style., Chapter Five, “Examining a Legacy” brings the dissertation full circle by demonstrating the rich pedagogical opportunities that Cavendish’s corpus affords. It does so by detailing her surviving corpus and offering a detailed case study of a single physical codex, Natures Picture (1671). This physical book, which resides in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, contains layers of marginalia that indicate a rich history of reader engagement. By exploring this book and its early readers, this chapter reveals how such materials can be used in the classroom to underscore Cavendish’s meaningful and enduring legacy.

Hollar “copied” Leonardo: The use of ‘carta lucida’ for incisions on a 1:1 scale Hollar “copied” Leonardo for Lord Arundel and, as already demonstrated, in some cases he did it in real size (1:1). In this work process Hollar, following a technique already described by Cennino Cennino in his Book of Art, uses carta lucida: a sheet of paper made transparent through the use of oils that allows him to have an exact copy on the real size of any works of art. An example of this working process can be one drawing attributed to the Follower of Leonardo da Vinci now at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem (inv. A 5). It is an ink drawing on carta lucida with the copy in the real size of a man seen in profile, from the left side of a drawing of Leonardo with a couple of men represented en face (Windsor, RL 12490). The size of the male figure reproduced in Leonardo’s autograph, in the Harlem copy as well as in the Hollar’s engraving is always almost identical. A dimensional match that allows to formulate a new proposal for attribution and to include the Haarlem’s drawing in the corpus of Hollar’s drawings as an example of his workflow.

Abstract Background The three superfamilies of Long Terminal Repeat (LTR) retrotransposons are a widespread kind of transposable element and a major factor in eukaryotic genome evolution. In metazoans, recent studies suggested that Copia LTR-retrotransposons display specific dynamic compared to the more abundant and diverse Gypsy elements. Indeed, Copia elements show a relative scarcity and the prevalence of only a few clades in specific hosts. Thus, BEL/Pao seems to be the second most abundant superfamily. However, the generality of these assumptions remains to be assessed. Therefore, we carried out the first large-scale comparative genomic analysis of LTR-retrotransposons in molluscs. The aim of this study was to analyse the diversity, copy numbers, genomic proportions and distribution of LTR-retrotransposons in a large host phylum. Results We compare nine genomes of molluscs and further added LTR-retrotransposons sequences detected in databases for 47 additional species. We identified 1709 families, which enabled us to define 31 clades. We show that clade richness was highly dependent on the considered superfamily. We found only three Copia clades, including GalEa and Hydra which appear to be widely distributed and highly dominant as they account for 96% of the characterised Copia elements. Among the seven BEL/Pao clades identified, Sparrow and Surcouf are characterised for the first time. We find no BEL or Pao elements, but the rare clades Dan and Flow are present in molluscs. Finally, we characterised 21 Gypsy clades, only five of which had been previously described, the C-clade being the most abundant one. Even if they are found in the same number of host species, Copia elements are clearly less abundant than BEL/Pao elements in copy number or genomic proportions, while Gypsy elements are always the most abundant ones whatever the parameter considered. Conclusions Our analysis confirms the contrasting dynamics of Copia and Gypsy elements in metazoans and indicates that BEL/Pao represents the second most abundant superfamily, probably reflecting an intermediate dynamic. Altogether, the data obtained in several taxa highly suggest that these patterns can be generalised for most metazoans. Finally, we highlight the importance of using database information in complement of genome analyses when analyzing transposable element diversity.
