Abstract

Acinetobacter baumannii, worldwide is considered an opportunistic microorganism, present in several cases of hospital-acquired infections. In the Caja Petrolera de Salud of Obrajes Hospital was made the isolation of four Acinetobacter baumannii strains. Identification was confirmed by biochemical tests. Then, the PFGE molecular technique was applied for the identification of genomic fingerprints using Apa I restriction en-zyme.

2. Frameworks for a Federal Student-Level Data Network: Considerations for Using the Common Education Data Standards (CEDS)

Abstract

As support continues to grow across the country and across the political spectrum for the federal student-level data network (SLDN) proposed in the College Transparency Act (CTA), IHEP partnered with AEM Education Services, with input from RTI International, to further build out a roadmap to support the implementation of the SLDN. "Frameworks for a Federal Student-Level Data Network: Considerations for Using the Common Education Data Standards (CEDS)" examines how the vocabulary, data models, and more than 550 postsecondary-specific elements already in the Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) can streamline implementation of an SLDN, which would bridge the current gaps in data that currently exclude countless students and their outcomes from higher education decision-making. This brief builds on other research to facilitate the implementation of an SLDN that would finally deliver accurate, complete, and timely data on enrollment, completion, and post-college outcomes while staunchly protecting student privacy. The findings in this brief align with a series of convenings that RTI and IHEP have hosted over the past two years with experts across the field of higher education to support the modernization of the nation's postsecondary data system. Recommendations from those convenings have addressed measures and underlying data elements addressed in proposed legislation, institutional views on data submission, and financial aid. 13. A survey of active learning algorithms for supervised remote sensing image classification

Abstract

Defining an efficient training set is one of the most delicate phases for the success of remote sensing image classification routines. The complexity of the problem, the limited temporal and financial resources, as well as the high intraclass variance can make an algorithm fail if it is trained with a suboptimal dataset. Active learning aims at building efficient training sets by iteratively improving the model performance through sampling. A user-defined heuristic ranks the unlabeled pixels according to a function of the uncertainty of their class membership and then the user is asked to provide labels for the most uncertain pixels. This paper reviews and tests the main families of active learning algorithms: committee, large margin and posterior probability-based. For each of them, the most recent advances in the remote sensing community are discussed and some heuristics are detailed and tested. Several challenging remote sensing scenarios are considered, including very high spatial resolution and hyperspectral image classification. Finally, guidelines for choosing the good architecture are provided for new and/or unexperienced user.

15. Challenges and Lessons Learned from Advocating for a Community Level Student Led Tobacco 21 Policy Initiative

Abstract

Nearly all lifelong smokers start as children or young adults, and the tobacco industry targets these specific age groups. A key public health effort to limit the use of tobacco products by people under the age of 21 years is the promotion of the "Tobacco 21" initiative. This initiative promotes and supports efforts to establish bills and ordinances across the country, which authorizes an increase in minimum legal sale age for tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to 21 years. To date, these laws stop short of making possession of tobacco and tobacco products by persons under 21 a crime, placing the direct responsibility on retailers under penalty of civil fines. Public Health advocates from the Toledo, Ohio community have engaged policymakers and community stakeholders to adopt a local Tobacco 21 ordinance. This case study describes the steps students and citizens took to advocate for a local ordinance and describes the challenges and lessons learned from this initiative.

Abstract

The poor gas selectivity problem has been a long-standing issue for miniaturized chemical-resistor gas sensors. The electronic nose (e-nose) was proposed in the 1980s to tackle the selectivity issue, but it required top-down chemical functionalization processes to deposit multiple functional materials. Here, we report a novel gas-sensing scheme using a single graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) and machine learning to realize gas selectivity under particular conditions by combining the unique properties of the GFET and e-nose concept. Instead of using multiple functional materials, the gas-sensing conductivity profiles of a GFET are recorded and decoupled into four distinctive physical properties and projected onto a feature space as 4D output vectors and classified to differentiated target gases by using machine-learning analyses. Our single-GFET approach coupled with trained pattern recognition algorithms was able to classify water, methanol, and ethanol vapors with high accuracy quantitatively when they were tested individually. Furthermore, the gas-sensing patterns of methanol were qualitatively distinguished from those of water vapor in a binary mixture condition, suggesting that the proposed scheme is capable of differentiating a gas from the realistic scenario of an ambient environment with background humidity. As such, this work offers a new class of gas-sensing schemes using a single GFET without multiple functional materials toward miniaturized e-noses.

Abstract

We investigate the problem of large-scale crowd size classification with a Wi-Fi-based passive radar for crowds of up to 100 people, with classes corresponding to intervals of numbers of people. A convolutional neural network (CNN) operating on radar range-Doppler maps (RDMs) is used as a classification algorithm. We propose a crowd simulator based on the method of moments (MoM) in electromagnetics able to generate representative RDMs for large crowds. We show that these MoM simulation data can be used to design the classification algorithms and tune their hyperparameters. We also investigate the limitations of the MoM simulation data in training the classification algorithms for subsequent application on experimental data. Crowd size classification is performed with high accuracy on real-life experimental measurements of a crowd with up to 100 people, obtained by channel estimation with 802.11ax-compliant high-efficiency long training fields (HE-LTF) transmitted by a Wi-Fi-based passive radar setup featuring two Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRPs) X310.

Abstract

Localization and tracking play important roles in wireless networks, providing the foundation to a broad spectrum of applications, such as emergency services, smart cities, autonomous driving, and more. In addition, location-based services gain increased attention, as their relevance continues to grow in 5G and 6G networks. Hence, this thesis delves into the localization and tracking of wireless transmitters.Direct approaches estimates the transmitter's position directly from the received signals at the base station (BS), whilst indirect ones rely on derived parameters, leading to less accurate estimates compared to direct ones. Distributed approaches spread the processing across BSs, thereby improving scalability compared to centralized ones. However, distributed localization and tracking approaches encounter various challenges when applied directly on the received signals. Therefore, the focus is narrowed down to the direct and distributed approaches. Additionally, the research is presented on three major axes.The first axis, Direct Localization, starts by refining the centralized iterative positioning estimation (IPE) algorithm. It details issues related to the information loss present in the iterative process of IPE. Two countermeasures are proposed, involving a kernel-based representation of received-signal loglikelihood for improved communication, and maintaining a common processing domain to prevent information losses during domain conversions. Afterwards, it explores Distributed Direct approaches, where a novel grid-based consensus approach, denoted as self-synchronization positioning estimation (SSPE), is introduced. It leverages the self-synchronization mechanism (SSM) to achieve global convergence in a distributed manner, on the posterior distribution of the transmitter's position. Abstract

El tema de la presente investigación se introduce en el contexto de una empresa de la ciudad de Salta que recurre como estrategia de comunicación a influencers salteños. Los objetivos generales son a) conocer las características comunicativas de un influencer salteño para comunicar una marca y b) determinar los resultados de la aplicación de estrategias de comunicación digital en Instagram, implementadas por un influencer salteño para publicitar la marca Cerveza Salta. La investigación siguió un enfoque cualitativo del tipo descriptivo. El diseño que sustenta el desarrollo del presente trabajo se basa en la utilización de la entrevista, observación y análisis documental, como técnicas de recolección de datos, a fin de arribar a las conclusiones pertinentes. La muestra, estuvo constituida por diez influencers salteños de 15 a 25 años de edad. De los resultados obtenidos se llega a concluir que entre los influencers salteños se destaca DJ Treekoo que utiliza la mayor cantidad de los recursos disponibles en la red social de Instagram, recurriendo a estrategias de comunicación lingüístico – discursivas y de la imagen con la finalidad de visibilizar la marca y lograr mayores interacciones con el público. The subject of this research is introduced in the context of a company in the city of Salta that uses influencers from Salta as a communication strategy. The general objectives are a) to know the communicative characteristics of an influencer from Salta to communicate a brand and b) to determine the results of the application of digital communication strategies on Instagram, implemented by an influencer from Salta to advertise the Cerveza Salta brand. The research followed a qualitative approach of the descriptive type. The design that supports the development of this work is based on the use of the interview, observation and documentary analysis, as data collection techniques, in order to reach the pertinent conclusions. Abstract

Hydrogen is undeniably one of the most promising options for producing energy with minimal environmental impact. However, current hydrogen production is still derived from carbon-intensive processes relying on fossil fuels. Biomass is a sustainable and versatile resource that can be converted into hydrogen through biological and thermochemical pathways from a large variety of feedstocks and technologies. This work reviews and compares existing biomass-to-hydrogen technologies, focusing on their characteristics, maturity level, benefits, limitations, and techno-economic and lifecycle environmental impacts. Less-developed biological conversion methods are characterized by low efficiencies and hydrogen productivity. More mature thermochemical routes enable higher efficiencies and hydrogen yields. Overall, while thermochemical processes suit centralized large-scale hydrogen production, biological pathways offer decentralized options, necessitating continued innovation for integration into future energy strategies. Some of these technologies, such as anaerobic digestion (best-case: 1.28 EUR/kgH2) and conventional gasification (best-case: 1.79 EUR/kgH2), emerge as promising, sustainable, and affordable alternatives for renewable hydrogen generation, offering production costs comparable to those of natural gas steam reforming (0.92–2.8 EUR/kgH2).
