Abstract

Het Erasmus+ project Vox Pop Europe ontwikkelt en evalueert een internationaal, digitaal dialoogplatform waar mbo-studenten uit verschillende landen en met diverse achtergronden en ervaringen met elkaar in gesprek kunnen gaan over uiteenlopende maatschappelijke onderwerpen. De afgelopen maanden zijn iets meer dan 700 mbostudenten gevraagd om input over welke onderwerpen ze graag met jongeren uit andere Europese landen zouden willen bespreken en hoe we de online context hierbij zo goed mogelijk kunnen inzetten. Een eerste evaluatie.

14. What is ‘needed’ to keep remembering? War-specific communication, parental exemplar behaviour and participation in national commemorations

Abstract

Given the abundance of literature on collective memory practices, there is relatively little empirical research on the socialization processes explaining the transmission of such practices. This article examines to what extent war-specific communication and parental exemplar behaviour function as a link between the collected memories of individuals and society's collective memory. Utilizing data from an online survey conducted in 2014, we focus on participation in the activities organized on Remembrance Day and Liberation Day in the Netherlands in remembrance of the Second World War. We distinguish between public and private practices. Our findings highlight that different forms of socialization substitute for one another. Whereas communication with non-relatives is particularly relevant for those communicating less frequently with parents about past war experiences, parental exemplar behaviour, such as participating in the two-minute silence on Remembrance Day, plays a bigger role amongst those with lower levels of communication with either relatives or non-relatives.

Contains fulltext : 143553.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) This paper studies to what extent participating in days for national commemoration and celebration is associated with feelings of national belonging, and to what extent this is comparable across generations and ethnic groups. Utilizing data from a national survey (N = 4,505), three major national days in the Netherlands are examined. We find that whereas participation in Queen's Day is associated with national belonging for all generations, for Remembrance Day this holds only for the generation born between 1945 and 1955, and for Liberation Day for the generations born after 1955. Moreover, for citizens with a non-Western origin, participating in national days is associated with national belonging more strongly than for citizens with a native Dutch or other Western background. These findings highlight the importance of paying attention to potential group differences in the association between participation in national days and feelings of national belonging. 18 p.

18. Voorspellers voor de mate van eshoppen - Een studie naar de invloed van woonlocatie, attitudes jegens eshoppen en persoonskenmerken op de mate van eshop gedrag door consumenten in Nederland

Volgend op de stijgende trend die eshoppen de laatste jaren heeft ingezet wordt de vraag welke factoren van belang zijn om de mate van eshoppen te verklaren relevant. In deze these is onderzocht wat de belangrijke voorspellers zijn voor de mate van eshoppen. Waar voorgaand onderzoek zich voornamelijk heeft gericht op zeer specifieke voorspellers van eshop gedrag, trachten wij een completer beeld van het eshopgedrag in Nederland te schetsen door verschillende determinanten mee te nemen in ons onderzoek. Aan de hand van verscheidene theoretische kaders zijn deelvragen opgesteld waarmee we de invloed van woonlocatie, houdingen en percepties jegens eshoppen en persoonskenmerken op de mate van eshoppen door consumenten in Nederland onderzoeken. De dataset waar we gebruik van hebben gemaakt is afkomstig uit winkelvragenlijsten uit 2003 en bevat een N van 826 respondenten. Er zijn zes hypothesen opgesteld om voorspellers van de mate van eshopgedrag te kunnen vaststellen, waarbij ook is getoetst voor een eventueel indirect verband van sociale omgeving via attituden. Deze hypothesen zijn getoetst met behulp van lineaire en multipele regressies. We vonden een significante samenhang tussen een toenemende mate aan internetervaring en de mate van eshoppen. Ook een positieve attitude jegens eshoppen voorspelde een hoge mate van eshoppen. Daarnaast is bewijs gevonden voor een indirect verband van sociale omgeving via attituden. Bij vervolgonderzoek zou men dieper in kunnen gaan op reeds gevonden verbanden en zich kunnen richten op verschillen tussen wijken.

22. School attitude: The role of parents and peers for western and non-western adolescents

Abstract

In this article, the influence of parents and friends in class on adolescents’ school attitude was compared. Additionally, a moderating effect of identification with a non-western culture in susceptibility to parental influence was examined. Data from the Dutch first wave of the nationally representative survey ‘Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study in Four European Countries’ CILS4EU (2010–2011) were analyzed (N = 2898). Results of multilevel analyses show that, in line with theories of socialization, both parental support and school attitude of friends within class have an effect on school attitude of adolescents. Supporting the argument that peers become increasingly important in adolescence, friends within class are more influential than parents. No difference was found in susceptibility to parental influence between adolescents who identify with a non-western culture and those who do not. However, those who do identify with a non-western culture were found to have a more negative school attitude.

Deze studie onderzoekt de invloed op interetnische houdingen van niet-westerse allochtone adolescenten in Nederland. Uit eerdere onderzoeken bleek dat de interetnische houding van niet-westerse allochtonen minder verbeterde dankzij interetnische vriendschappen dan bij autochtonen. Om dit verschil in effect te verklaren zal in deze studie worden gekeken naar de positieve invloed van interetnische vriendschappen en de negatieve invloed van ervaren discriminatie op interetnische houdingen.

24. Online shoppen als uitbestedingstrategie

In deze studie hebben we gekeken naar de rol van online shoppen in het dagelijks leven. Onze hoofdvraag luidde dan ook: In hoeverre wordt online shoppen als uitbestedingstrategie gebruikt door huishoudens en verschilt dit voor dagelijkse en niet-dagelijkse boodschappen? We hebben dus geprobeerd online shoppen te verklaren vanuit uitbesteding en hebben gekeken in hoeverre online shoppen tijd bespaart. Daarnaast is onderzocht of deze effecten verschillen tussen dagelijkse en niet-dagelijkse boodschappen. Dit leidde tot hypotheses over (1) het demografisch profiel van online shoppers, (2) uitbestedingstrategieën, (2b) de verschillen in effecten voor dagelijkse en niet-dagelijkse boodschappen, (3) tijdsbesparingeffecten en (3b) de verschillen in effecten voor dagelijkse en niet-dagelijkse boodschappen. Deze hypotheses zijn getest met behulp van data afkomstig uit Utrecht en omstreken (N = 826). Onze belangrijkste significante resultaten luiden als volgt: oudere personen shoppen minder online dan jongere respondenten. Ook een toename in opleidingsniveau zorgt voor een daling in de mate van online shoppen. Tot slot shoppen huishoudens met hoge inkomens significant meer online dan mensen met lage inkomens.

25. Commemorative and Civic Participation in the 21st century: a Comparison across Generations and Ethnic Origin.

Abstract

Over the past decade, many countries have introduced national history and commemorative rituals as a way to enhance civic participation and social integration. What is missing is empirical research on whether participation in national commemorations and celebrations is actually associated with activities such as volunteering or voting. Using two recent datasets from the Netherlands, this study examines patterns of commemorative and civic participation amongst different generations (N = 2,993), as well as amongst adolescents of various ethnic origins (N = 3,824). Although preliminary, our findings indicate that later generations - in particular those from non-native Dutch origin - are less actively involved in commemorative and civic activities than earlier generations. Moreover, later generations report a stronger association between commemorating and voting, which is at least partially explained by the closer connection between commemorating and post-materialistic values. The relationship between commemorating and volunteering is stronger for earlier generations. Finally, adolescents from non-western origin report stronger associations between commemorating, voting, and volunteering than native Dutch adolescents. This is explained for a large part by the close connection between commemorating and national belonging amongst this group. These findings suggest that the extent to which commemorative participation is associated with civic participation depends not only upon generational status and ethnic origin, but also upon type of activities. Additionally, these results highlight that more attention should be paid to possible explanations of patterns of commemorative and civic participation, especially amongst later generations.
