In this article, an optimal beamforming technique using a low cost intelligent Rotman lens antenna is proposed. The proposed technique enjoys full diversity with high coding gain, has a very low encoding and decoding complexity, and does not require channel knowledge at any transmitting or receiving antenna. From our simulation results, the proposed technique outperforms the best known non-coherent multi-antenna techniques. Furthermore, we prove that the BER expressions obtained from the theoretical analysis enjoy full diversity gain and match our conducted simulations.

Abstract In this article, a novel two-way double-relay selection strategy with its bit error rate (BER) performance analysis is proposed. In this novel strategy, as a first step we choose two relays out of a set of relay-nodes in a way to maximize the system performance in terms of BER and complexity. In the second step, the selected relays apply orthogonal space-time coding scheme using the three-phase protocol to establish a two-way communication between the transceivers, which will lead to a significant improvement in the achievable diversity and coding gain with a very low decoding complexity by using a symbol-wise decoder. Furthermore, the performance of the overall system is further enhanced through the use of a network coding method at the selected relay-nodes. Moreover, this paper proposes the analytical approximation of the BER performance. As well, we show that the analytical results match perfectly the simulated ones. In addition, we prove that our strategy outperforms the current state-of-the-art ones by proposing a better cooperative communication system in terms of BER.

In this article, a low-cost electromagnetic structure emulating photonic nanojets is utilized to improve the efficiency of wireless relay networks. The spectral element method, due to its high accuracy, is used to verify the efficiency of the proposed structure by solving the associate field distribution. The application of optimal single-relay selection method shows that full diversity gain with low complexity can be achieved. In this paper, the proposed technique using smart relays combines the aforementioned two methods to attain the benefits of bothmethods by achieving the highest coding and diversity gain and enhances the overall network performance in terms of bit error rate (BER). Moreover, we analytically prove the advantage of using the proposed technique. In our simulations, it can be shown that the proposed technique outperforms the best known state-of-the-art single relay selection technique. In this article, we introduce a new bi-directional dual-relay selection strategy with its bit error rate (BER) performance analysis. During the first step of the proposed strategy, two relays out of a set of N relay-nodes are selected in a way to optimize the system performance in terms of BER, based on the suggested algorithm which checks if the selected relays using the maxmin criterion are the best ones. In the second step, the chosen relay-nodes performan orthogonal space-time coding scheme using the two-phase relaying protocol to establish a bi-directional communication between the communicating terminals, leading to a significant improvement in the achievable coding and diversity gain. To further improve the overall system performance, the selected relay-nodes apply also a digital network coding scheme. Furthermore, this paper discusses the analytical approximation of the BER performance of the proposed strategy, where we prove that the analytical results match almost perfectly the simulated ones. Abstract This paper proposes a new two-way double-relay selection strategy for wireless cooperative communication systems with its bit error rate (BER) performance analysis. In this work, two relays are first chosen to maximize the overall system performance in terms of BER. Then, either the two-phase or three-phase protocol is performed to achieve two-directional communications between the communicating terminals through the selected relay nodes that apply orthogonal space-time coding (STC) scheme in a distributed fashion to improve the overall system performance with linear decoding complexity. In other words, the proposed strategy offers an improvement in the reliability of the system and enjoys very low decoding complexity by enabling a symbol-wise decoder. On the other hand, another improvement in the performance at the communication terminals is achieved by performing a network coding method at the selected relay nodes. Furthermore, we offer also analytical approximation of the BER performance for the proposed strategy where the simulation results match perfectly the analytical ones. From the simulation results section, the proposed strategy shows a substantially improved BER performance as compared to the current ones.

We propose a cooperative signal-forwarding scheme for wireless sensor and mesh networks using semidefinite constraints. We consider a multiple source-destination scenario where a set of relays assists forwarding signals from sources to destinations. This paper assumes cooperation between relays so that the signals received from source nodes are passed between the relays. A semidefimte programming framework allows us to impose various quality-of-service (QoS) constraints for each source-destination pair. The proposed scheme outperforms a cooperative relaying strategy that is based on a minimum mean square error (MMSE). The design also considers quantization of signals that are passed between cooperating relays.
