Motivated by recent advances in quantum gas microscopy, we investigate correlation functions of the current density in many-body Landau Level states, such as the Laughlin state of the fractional quantum Hall effect. For states fully in the lowest Landau level, we present an exact relationship which shows that all correlation functions involving the current density are directly related to correlation functions of the number density. We calculate perturbative corrections to this relationship arising from inter-particle interactions, and show that this provides a method by which to extract the system's interaction energy. Subwavelength atomic arrays constitute a novel light-matter platform with long-range interactions and collective dissipation that can host novel non-equilibrium many-body states. Here we investigate their steady states under coherent driving. While in the low-drive intensity regime they have often been described in terms of linear, non-interacting theories, we show that such a description is inadequate in subwavelength regimes. There, we point out that non-linearities can have large effects down to a vanishing drive intensity in the limit of large number of atoms. Then we investigate the role of fluctuations beyond Gutzwiller mean-field theory within a Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) approach in the regime of intermediate drive intensity. We show that these have a dramatic impact on the steady-state phase diagram, including suppressing a range of non-homogeneous instabilities and phases predicted in mean-field theory., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Subwavelength arrays of quantum emitters have emerged as an interesting platform displaying prominent collective effects that can be harnessed for applications. Here we study such arrays under strong coherent driving, realizing an open quantum many-body problem in a strongly non-linear regime. We show that the spectrum of scattered light, characterized by the famous Mollow triplet for a single atom, develops a characteristic lineshape with flat sidebands determined by dipolar interactions. Remarkably, this is independent of the specific geometry, but is sensitive to the ordered arrangement of the atoms. This lineshape therefore characterizes atomic arrays and distinguishes them from disordered ensembles and non-interacting emitters. The realization of excitonic insulators in transition metal dichalcogenide systems has opened the door to explorations of the exotic properties such a state exhibits. We study theoretically the potential for excitonic insulators to show an anomalous form of quantum oscillations: the de Haas-van Alphen effect in an insulating system. We focus on the role of the interactions that generate the energy gap and show that it is crucial to consider quantum fluctuations that go beyond the mean field treatment. Remarkably, quantum fluctuations can be dominant, and lead to quantum oscillations than are significantly larger than those predicted using mean field theory. Indeed, in experimentally accessible parameter regimes these fluctuation-generated quantum oscillations can even be larger than what would be found for the corresponding gapless system., Comment: 4+3 pages, 2+1 figures

The ground states of noninteracting fermions in one-dimension with chiral symmetry form a class of topological band insulators, described by a topological invariant that can be related to the Zak phase. Recently, a generalization of this quantity to mixed states - known as the ensemble geometric phase (EGP) - has emerged as a robust way to describe topology at non-zero temperature. By using this quantity, we explore the nature of topology allowed for dissipation beyond a Lindblad description, to allow for coupling to external baths at finite temperatures. We introduce two main aspects to the theory of mixed state topology. First, we discover topological phase transitions as a function of the temperature T, manifesting as changes in winding number of the EGP accumulated over a closed loop in parameter space. We characterize the nature of these transitions and reveal that the corresponding non-equilibrium steady state at the transition can exhibit a nontrivial structure - contrary to previous studies where it was found to be in a fully mixed state. Second, we demonstrate that the EGP itself becomes quantized when key symmetries are present, allowing it to be viewed as a topological marker which can undergo equilibrium topological transitions at non-zero temperatures., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures; comments welcome

We experimentally realize a spin-momentum lattice with a homogeneously trapped Fermi gas. The lattice is created via cyclically-rotated atom-laser couplings between three bare atomic spin states, and are such that they form a triangular lattice in a synthetic spin-momentum space. We demonstrate the lattice and explore its dynamics with spin- and momentum-resolved absorption imaging. This platform will provide new opportunities for synthetic spin systems and the engineering of topological bands. In particular, the use of three spin states in two spatial dimensions would allow the simulation of synthetic magnetic fields of high spatial uniformity, which would lead to ultra-narrow Chern bands that support robust fractional quantum Hall states., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Entanglement between spatially distant qubits is perhaps the most counterintuitive and vital resource for distributed quantum computing. However, despite a few special cases, there is no known general procedure to maximally entangle two distant parts of an interacting many-body system. Here we present a symmetry-based approach, whereby one applies several timed pulses to drive a system to a particular symmetry sector with maximal bipartite long-range entanglement. As a concrete example, we demonstrate how a simple sequence of on-site pulses on a qubit array can efficiently produce any given number of stable nonlocal Bell pairs, realizable in several present-day atomic and photonic experimental platforms. More generally, our approach paves a route for novel state preparation by harnessing symmetry. In recent years it has become understood that quantum oscillations of the magnetization as a function of magnetic field, long recognized as phenomena intrinsic to metals, can also manifest in insulating systems. Theory has shown that in certain simple band insulators, quantum oscillations can appear with a frequency set by the area traced by the minimum gap in momentum space, and are suppressed for weak fields by an intrinsic "Dingle damping" factor reflecting the size of the bandgap. Here we examine quantum oscillations of the magnetization in excitonic and Kondo insulators, for which interactions play a crucial role. In models of these systems, self-consistent parameters themselves oscillate with changing magnetic field, generating additional contributions to quantum oscillations. In the low-temperature, weak-field regime, we find that the lowest harmonic of quantum oscillations of the magnetization are unaffected, so that the zero-field bandgap can still be extracted by measuring the Dingle damping factor of this harmonic. We show that the "dark condensates" that arise when excitons form a Bose-Einstein condensate in a material with an indirect bandgap are not completely dark to optical emission. Rather, such states are "leaky condensates" in which optical emission is facilitated by many-body interactions. We analyze the properties of these leaky condensates in the context of twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, which host strongly interacting excitons and an indirect bandgap. We show that this interaction-driven "leaky" emission dominates photoluminescence at low temperatures, with distinctive qualitative features. The geometric interpretation of (pseudo)spin 1/2 systems on the Bloch sphere has been appreciated across different areas ranging from condensed matter to quantum information and high energy physics. Although similar notions for larger Hilbert spaces are established in mathematics, they have been so far less explored beyond the two-level case for practical usage in condensed matter settings, or have involved restrictions to sub manifolds within the full Hilbert space. We here employ a coherence vector description to theoretically characterize a general N-level system on the higher dimensional generalized Bloch (hyper)sphere by respecting the structure of the underlying SU(N) algebra and construct physically intuitive geometric pictures for topological concepts. Focusing on two spatial dimensions, we reveal a geometric interpretation for the Chern number in larger Hilbert spaces in terms of a nested structure comprising N-1 two-spheres. We demonstrate that for the N-level case, there is an exterior two-sphere that provides a useful characterization of the system, notably by playing a primary role in determining the Chern number. The external sphere can be directly measured in ultracold atoms via well-established band mapping techniques, thereby imparting knowledge of the topological nature of state. We also investigate how the time evolution of the coherence vector defined on the generalized Bloch hypersphere can be utilized to extract the full state vector in experiments, allowing us to develop a tomography scheme involving quenches for three-level systems. Moir\'e excitons promise a new platform with which to generate and manipulate hybrid quantum phases of light and matter in unprecedented regimes of interaction strength. We explore the properties in this regime, through studies of a Bose-Hubbard model of excitons coupled to cavity photons. We show that the steady states exhibit a rich phase diagram with pronounced bi-stabilities governed by multi-photon resonances reflecting the strong inter-exciton interactions. Discontinuous quantum phase transitions and the associated metastability play central roles in diverse areas of physics ranging from ferromagnetism to false vacuum decay in the early universe. Using strongly-interacting ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, we realize a driven many-body system whose quantum phase transition can be tuned from continuous to discontinuous. Resonant shaking of a one-dimensional optical lattice hybridizes the lowest two Bloch bands, driving a novel transition from a Mott insulator to a $\pi$-superfluid, i.e., a superfluid state with staggered phase order. For weak shaking amplitudes, this transition is discontinuous (first-order) and the system can remain frozen in a metastable state, whereas for strong shaking, it undergoes a continuous transition toward a $\pi$-superfluid. Kramers' degeneracy theorem underpins many interesting effects in quantum systems with time-reversal symmetry. We show that the generator of dynamics for Markovian open fermionic systems can exhibit an analogous degeneracy, protected by a combination of time-reversal symmetry and the microreversibility (detailed balance) property of systems at thermal equilibrium -- the degeneracy is lifted if either condition is not met. We provide simple examples of this phenomenon and show that the degeneracy is reflected in the single-particle Green's functions. Furthermore, we show that certain experimental signatures of topological edge modes in open many-body systems can be protected by microreversibility in the same way. Our results highlight the importance of detailed balance in characterizing open topological matter.

Metals composed of weakly-coupled, stacked layers possess a Fermi surface that slightly varies in size along the stacking direction. This appears in de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations of the magnetisation with magnetic field as two close frequencies, corresponding to the two extremal Fermi surface cross-sectional areas. We show that, for layered materials of sufficiently high mobility, Coulomb interactions can have a dramatic effect on the form of the dHvA oscillations: there is also generically an oscillation at the small difference of the two large frequencies. We determine the size and form of this effect, and show that it probes the short-range part of the Coulomb interactions within the layered material. We argue that this interaction effect may explain recent experimental observations of anomalous low-frequency dHvA oscillations in the ultrapure delafossites., Comment: 5 + 5 pages, 1 figure

We demonstrate that electrostatic interactions between helical electrons at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator and a dynamical impurity can induce quasi-elastic backscattering. Modelling the impurity as a two-level system, we show that transitions between counterpropagating Kramers-degenerate electronic states can occur without breaking time-reversal symmetry, provided that the impurity also undergoes a transition. The associated electrical resistance has a weak temperature dependence down to a non-universal temperature scale. Vortex rings are remarkably stable structures occurring in numerous systems: for example in turbulent gases, where they are at the origin of weather phenomena [1]; in fluids with implications for biology [2]; in electromagnetic discharges [3]; and in plasmas [4]. While vortex rings have also been predicted to exist in ferromagnets [5], they have not yet been observed. Using X-ray magnetic nanotomography [6], we imaged three-dimensional structures forming closed loops in a bulk micromagnet, each composed of a vortex-antivortex pair. Based on the magnetic vorticity, a quantity analogous to hydrodynamic vorticity, we identify these configurations as magnetic vortex rings. While such structures have been predicted to exist as transient states in exchange ferromagnets [5], the vortex rings we observe exist as stable, static configurations, whose stability we attribute to the dipolar interaction. In addition, we observe stable vortex loops intersected by magnetic singularities [7], at which the magnetisation within the vortex and antivortex cores reverses. We gain insight into the stability of these states through field and thermal equilibration protocols. These measurements pave the way for the observation of complex three-dimensional solitons in bulk magnets, as well as for the development of applications based on three-dimensional magnetic structures.

We find a rich variety of counterintuitive features in the steady states of a qubit array coupled to a dissipative source and sink at two arbitrary sites, using a master equation approach. We show there are setups where increasing the pump and loss rates establishes long-range coherence. At sufficiently strong dissipation, the source or sink effectively generates correlation between its neighboring sites, leading to a striking density-wave order for a class of "resonant" geometries. This effect can be used more widely to engineer nonequilibrium phases. We show the steady states are generically distinct for hard-core bosons and free fermions, and differ significantly from the ones found before in special cases. They are explained by generally applicable ansatzes for the long-time dynamics at weak and strong dissipation. We study the decay mechanism of the gapped lowest-lying excitation of a quasi-pure box-trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Owing to the absence of lower-energy modes, or direct coupling to an external bath, this excitation is protected against one-body (linear) decay and the damping mechanism is exclusively nonlinear. We develop a universal theoretical model that explains this fundamental nonlinear damping as a process whereby two quanta of the gapped lowest excitation mode couple to a higher-energy mode, which subsequently decays into a continuum. We find quantitative agreement between our experiments and the predictions of this model. We observe a structural phase transition between two configurations of a superradiant crystal by coupling a Bose-Einstein condensate to an optical cavity and applying imbalanced transverse pump fields. We find that this first order phase transition is accompanied by transient dynamics of the order parameter which we measure in real-time. The phase transition and the excitation spectrum can be derived from a microscopic Hamiltonian in quantitative agreement with our experimental data.

We show that a simple experimental setting of a locally pumped and lossy array of two-level quantum systems can stabilize states with strong long-range coherence. Indeed, by explicit analytic construction, we show there is an extensive set of steady-state density operators, from minimally to maximally entangled, despite this being an interacting open many-body problem. Such nonequilibrium steady states arise from a hidden symmetry that stabilizes Bell pairs over arbitrarily long distances, with unique experimental signatures. We demonstrate a protocol by which one can selectively prepare these states using dissipation. An excitonic insulator (EI) is an unconventional quantum phase of matter in which excitons, bound pairs of electrons and holes, undergo Bose--Einstein condensation, forming a macroscopic coherent state. While its existence was first hypothesized half a century ago, the EI has eluded experimental observation in bulk materials for decades. In the last few years, a resurgence of interest in the subject has been driven by the identification of several candidate materials suspected to support an excitonic condensate. However, one obstacle in verifying the nature of these systems has been to find signatures of the EI that distinguish it from a normal insulator. To address this, we focus on a clear qualitative difference between the two phases: the existence of Goldstone modes born by the spontaneous breaking of a $U(1)$ symmetry in the EI. Even if this mode is gapped, as occurs in the case of an approximate symmetry, this branch of collective modes remains a fundamental feature of the low-energy dynamics of the EI provided the symmetry-breaking is small. We study a simple model that realizes an excitonic condensate, and use mean field theory within the random-phase approximation to determine its collective modes. We subsequently develop a diagrammatic method to incorporate the effects of disorder perturbatively, and use it to determine the scattering rate of the collective modes. We interpret our results within an an effective field theory. The collective modes are found to be robust against symmetry-preserving disorder, implying an experimental fingerprint unique to the EI: the ballistic propagation of low-lying modes over mesoscopic distances, at electronic-scale velocities. Excitonic insulators host a condensate of electron-hole pairs at equilibrium, giving rise to collective many-body effects. Although several materials have emerged as excitonic insulator candidates, evidence of long-range coherence is lacking and the origin of the ordered phase in these systems remains controversial. Here, using ultrafast pump-probe microscopy, we investigate the possible excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. Below 328 K, we observe the anomalous micrometer-scale propagation of coherent modes at velocities of the order of $\sim10^5$ m/s, which we attribute to the hybridization between phonon modes and the phase mode of the condensate. We develop a theoretical framework to support this explanation and propose that electronic interactions provide a significant contribution to the ordered phase in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. These results allow us to understand how the condensate's collective modes transport energy and interact with other degrees of freedom. Our study provides a unique paradigm for the investigation and manipulation of these properties in strongly correlated materials.

The second law of thermodynamics points to the existence of an `arrow of time', along which entropy only increases. This arises despite the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) of the microscopic laws of nature. Within quantum theory, TRS underpins many interesting phenomena, most notably topological insulators and the Haldane phase of quantum magnets. Here, we demonstrate that such TRS-protected effects are fundamentally unstable against coupling to an environment. Irrespective of the microscopic symmetries, interactions between a quantum system and its surroundings facilitate processes which would be forbidden by TRS in an isolated system. This leads not only to entanglement entropy production and the emergence of macroscopic irreversibility, but also to the demise of TRS-protected phenomena, including those associated with certain symmetry-protected topological phases. We establish an analytic low-energy theory describing higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) phases in quasicrystalline systems. We apply this to a model consisting of two stacked Haldane models with oppositely propagating edge modes, analogous to the Kane-Mele model, and with a $30^\circ$ twist. We show that the resulting localized modes at corners, characteristic of a HOTI, are not associated with conventional mass inversions but are instead associated with what we dub "fractional mass kinks". By generalizing the low-energy theory, we establish a classification for arbitrary $ n $-fold rotational symmetries. We also derive a relationship between corner modes in a bilayer and disclination modes in a single layer. By using numerics to go beyond the weak-coupling limit, we show that a hierarchy of additional gaps occurs due to the quasiperiodicity, which also harbor corner-localized modes., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We uncover a topological classification applicable to open fermionic systems governed by a general class of Lindblad master equations. These `quadratic Lindbladians' can be captured by a non-Hermitian single-particle matrix which describes internal dynamics as well as system-environment coupling. We show that this matrix must belong to one of ten non-Hermitian Bernard-LeClair symmetry classes which reduce to the Altland-Zirnbauer classes in the closed limit. The Lindblad spectrum admits a topological classification, which we show results in gapless edge excitations with finite lifetimes. Unlike previous studies of purely Hamiltonian or purely dissipative evolution, these topological edge modes are unconnected to the form of the steady state. We provide one-dimensional examples where the addition of dissipators can either preserve or destroy the closed classification of a model, highlighting the sensitivity of topological properties to details of the system-environment coupling., Comment: 5 + 3 pages, 4 figures

The topological features of quantum many-body wave functions are known to have profound consequences for the physics of ground-states and their low-energy excitations. We describe how topology influences the dynamics of many-body systems when driven far from equilibrium. Our results are succinctly captured by a nonequilibrium topological classification that can be used to predict universal aspects of generic isolated quantum systems as they evolve unitarily in time. By analogy to the classifications used to describe systems in equilibrium, we consider two short-ranged entangled wave functions to be topologically equivalent if they can be interconverted via finite-time unitary evolution governed by a symmetry-respecting Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that this definition captures the salient features of these systems in a broad range of nonequilibrium scenarios. As well as providing conceptual insights into the constraints imposed by topology on many-body dynamics, we discuss the practical implications of our findings. In particular, we show that the characteristic zero-frequency spectroscopic peaks associated with topologically protected edge modes will be broadened by external noise only when the system is trivial in the nonequilibrium classification., Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures

Classical dynamical systems close to a critical point are known to act as efficient sensors due to a strongly nonlinear response. We explore such systems in the quantum regime by modeling a quantum version of a driven van der Pol oscillator. We find the classical response survives down to one excitation quantum. At very weak drives, genuine quantum features arise, including diverging and negative susceptibilities. Further, the linear response is greatly enhanced by using a strong incoherent pump. Despite the success in describing a range of quantum many-body states using tensor networks, there is a no-go theorem that rules out strictly local tensor networks as topologically nontrivial groundstates of gapped parent Hamiltonians with short-range (including exponentially decaying) couplings. In this work, we show that for free fermions, strictly local tensor networks may describe nonzero temperature averages with respect to gapped Hamiltonians with exponentially decaying couplings. Parent Hamiltonians in this sense may be constructed for any dimensionality and without any obstructions due to their topology. Conversely, we also show that thermal averages with respect to gapped, strictly short-range free-fermion Hamiltonians can be calculated by tensor networks whose links decay exponentially with distance. We also describe a truncation-reconstruction scheme for such tensor networks that leads to a controlled approximation of exact averages in terms of a sequence of related thermal averages. We show that electronic materials with disallowed rotational symmetries that enforce quasiperiodic order can exhibit quantum oscillations and that these are generically associated with exotic "spiral Fermi surfaces." These Fermi surfaces are self-intersecting, and characterized by a winding number of their surface tangent---a topological invariant---that is larger than one. We establish the existence of a topological classification of many-particle quantum systems undergoing unitary time evolution. The classification naturally inherits phenomenology familiar from equilibrium -- it is robust against disorder and interactions, and exhibits a non-equilibrium bulk-boundary correspondence, which connects bulk topological properties to the entanglement spectrum. We explicitly construct a non-equilibrium classification of non-interacting fermionic systems with non-spatial symmetries in all spatial dimensions (the `ten-fold way'), which differs from its equilibrium counterpart. We propose a general strategy for generating synthetic magnetic fields in complex lattices with non-trivial connectivity based on light-matter coupling in cold atomic gases. Our approach starts from an underlying optical flux lattice in which flux arises by coupling several internal states. Starting from a high symmetry optical flux lattice, we superpose a scalar potential with a super- or sublattice period in order to eliminate links between the original lattice sites. As an alternative to changing connectivity, the approach can also be used to create or remove lattice sites from the underlying parent lattice. To demonstrate our concept, we consider the dice lattice geometry as an explicit example, and construct a dice lattice with a flux density of half a flux quantum per plaquette, providing a pathway to flat bands with a large band gap. While the intuition for our proposal stems from analysis of deep optical lattices, we demonstrate that the approach is robust even for shallow optical flux lattices far from the tight-binding limit. We also provide an alternative experimental proposal to realize a synthetic gauge field in a fully frustrated dice lattice based on laser-induced hoppings along individual bonds of the lattice, again involving a superlattice potential. In this approach, atoms with a long-lived excited state are trapped using an 'anti-magic' wavelength of light, allowing the desired complex hopping elements to be induced in a specific laser coupling scheme for the dice lattice geometry. We conclude by comparing the complexity of these alternative approaches, and advocate that complex optical flux lattices provide the more elegant and easily generalisable strategy., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures

We study the topological properties of one dimensional systems undergoing unitary time evolution. We show that symmetries possessed both by the initial wavefunction and by the Hamiltonian at all times may not be present in the time-dependent wavefunction -- a phenomenon which we dub "dynamically-induced symmetry breaking". This leads to the possibility of a time-varying bulk index after quenching within non-interacting gapped topological phases. The dissipative response of a quantum system upon a time-dependent drive can be exploited as a probe of its geometric and topological properties. In this work, we explore the implications of such phenomena in the context of two-dimensional gases subjected to a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that a filled Landau level exhibits a quantized circular dichroism, which can be traced back to its underlying non-trivial topology. Based on selection rules, we find that this quantized circular dichroism can be suitably described in terms of Rabi oscillations, whose frequencies satisfy simple quantization laws. Moreover, we discuss how these quantized dissipative responses can be probed locally, both in the bulk and at the boundaries of the quantum Hall system. We describe the theory of the dynamics of atoms in two-dimensional quasicrystalline optical lattices. We focus on a regime of shallow lattice depths under which the applied force can cause Landau-Zener tunneling past a dense hierarchy of gaps in the quasiperiodic energy spectrum. We derive conditions on the external force that allow for a "semiadiabatic" regime in which semiclassical equations of motion can apply, leading to Bloch oscillations between the edges of a pseudo-Brillouin-zone. We verify this semiclassical theory by comparing to the results of an exact numerical solution. Interesting features appear in the semiclassical dynamics for the quasicrystal for a particle driven in a cyclic trajectory around the corner of the pseudo-Brillouin-zone: The particle fails to return to its initial state, providing a realization of a "spiral holonomy" in the dynamics. We show that there can appear anomalous velocity contibutions, associated with nonzero Berry curvature. We relate these to the Berry phase associated with the spiral holonomy, and show how the Berry curvature can be accessed from the semiclassical dynamics. Finally, by identifying the pseudo-Brillouin-zone as a higher genus surface, we show that the Chern number classification for periodic systems can be extended to a quasicrystal, thereby determining a topological index for the system., Comment: Accepted version, 11 pages, 9 figures

Motivated by experimental progress in strongly coupled atom-photon systems in optical cavities, we study theoretically the quantum dynamics of atoms coupled to a one-dimensional dynamical optical lattice. The dynamical lattice is chosen to have a period that is incommensurate with that of an underlying static lattice, leading to a dynamical version of the Aubry-Andr\'e model which can cause localization of single-particle wavefunctions. We show that atomic wavepackets in this dynamical lattice generically spread via anomalous diffusion, which can be tuned between super-diffusive and sub-diffusive regimes. We develop an analytic theory for the recently demonstrated Josephson Junction laser (Science 355, p. 939, 2017). By working in the time-domain representation (rather than the frequency-domain) a single non-linear equation is obtained for the dynamics of the device, which is fully solvable in some regimes of operation. It is well known that there is a particle-hole symmetry for spin-polarized electrons with two-body interactions in a partially filled Landau level, which becomes exact in the limit where the cyclotron energy is large compared to the interaction strength, so one can ignore mixing between Landau levels. This symmetry is explicit in the description of a half-filled Landau level recently introduced by D. T. Son, using Dirac fermions, but it was thought to be absent in the older fermion-Chern- Simons approach, developed by Halperin, Lee, and Read and subsequent authors. We show here, however, that when properly evaluated, the Halperin, Lee, Read (HLR) theory gives results for long-wavelength low-energy physical properties, including the Hall conductance in the presence of impurities and the positions of minima in the magnetoroton spectra for fractional quantized Hall states close to half-filling, that are identical to predictions of the Dirac formulation. The de Haas-van Alphen effect (dHvAe) describes the periodic oscillation of the magnetisation in a material as a function of inverse applied magnetic field. It forms the basis of a well established procedure for measuring Fermi surface properties and its observation is typically taken as a direct signature of a system being metallic. However, certain insulators can show similar oscillations of the magnetisation from quantisation of the energies of electron states in filled bands. Recently the theory of such an ${\it anomalous}$ dHvAe (AdHvAe) has been worked out but so far there is no clear experimental observation. Here, we show that the inverted narrow gap regime of InAs/GaSb quantum wells is an ideal platform for the observation of the AdHvAe. From our microscopic calculations we make quantitative predictions for the relevant magnetic field and temperature regimes, and describe unambiguous experimental signatures., Comment: 4.1 pages, 3 figures

Kondo insulating materials lie outside the usual dichotomy of weakly versus correlated - band versus Mott - insulators. They are metallic at high temperatures but resemble band insulators at low temperatures because of the opening of an interaction induced band gap. The first discovered Kondo insulator (KI) SmB$_6$ has been predicted to form a topological KI (TKI) which mimics a topological insulator at low temperatures. However, since its discovery thermodynamic and transport anomalies have been observed that have defied a theoretical explanation. Enigmatic signatures of collective modes inside the charge gap are seen in specific heat, thermal transport and quantum oscillation experiments in strong magnetic fields. Here, we show that TKIs are susceptible to the formation of excitons and magneto-excitons. These charge neutral composite particles can account for long-standing anomalies in SmB$_6$ which is crucial for the identification of bulk topological signatures., Comment: 4.3 pages + supp. mat., 5 figures

We study the many-body phases of bosonic atoms with $N$ internal states confined to a 1D optical lattice under the influence of a synthetic magnetic field and strong repulsive interactions. The $N$ internal states of the atoms are coupled via Raman transitions creating the synthetic magnetic field in the space of internal spin states corresponding to recent experimental realisations. We focus on the case of strong $\mbox{SU}(N)$ invariant local density-density interactions in which each site of the 1D lattice is at most singly occupied, and strong Raman coupling, in distinction to previous work which has focused on the weak Raman coupling case. This allows us to keep only a single state per site and derive a low energy effective spin $1/2$ model. The effective model contains first-order nearest neighbour tunnelling terms, and second-order nearest neighbour interactions and correlated next-nearest neighbour tunnelling terms. By adjusting the flux $\phi$ one can tune the relative importance of first-order and second-order terms in the effective Hamiltonian. In particular, first-order terms can be set to zero, realising a novel model with dominant second-order terms. We show that the resulting competition between density-dependent tunnelling and repulsive density-density interaction leads to an interesting phase diagram including a phase with long-ranged pair-superfluid correlations. The method can be straightforwardly extended to higher dimensions and lattices of arbitrary geometry including geometrically frustrated lattices where the interplay of frustration, interactions and kinetic terms is expected to lead to even richer physics., Comment: accepted version, 10 pages, 6 figures

We study fermions that are gauge-coupled to a cavity mode via Raman-assisted hopping in a one dimensional lattice. For an infinite lattice, we find a superradiant phase with infinitesimal pumping threshold which induces a directed particle flow. We explore the fate of this flow in a finite lattice with boundaries, studying the non-equilibrium dynamics including fluctuation effects. The short time dynamics is dominated by superradiance, while the long time behaviour is governed by cavity fluctuations. We show that the steady state in the finite lattice is not unique, and can be understood in terms of coherent bosonic excitations above a Fermi surface in real space., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, including supplemental material

We propose the use of optical lattice clocks operated with fermionic alkaline-earth-atoms to study spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in interacting many-body systems. The SOC emerges naturally during the clock interrogation when atoms are allowed to tunnel and accumulate a phase set by the ratio of the "magic" lattice wavelength to the clock transition wavelength. We demonstrate how standard protocols such as Rabi and Ramsey spectroscopy, that take advantage of the sub-Hertz resolution of state-of-the-art clock lasers, can perform momentum-resolved band tomography and determine SOC-induced $s$-wave collisions in nuclear spin polarized fermions. By adding a second counter-propagating clock beam a sliding superlattice can be implemented and used for controlled atom transport and as a probe of $p$ and $s$-wave interactions. The present Chapter discusses methods by which topological Bloch bands can be prepared in cold-atom setups. Focusing on the case of Chern bands for two-dimensional systems, we describe how topological properties can be triggered by driving atomic gases, either by dressing internal levels with light or through time-periodic modulations.
