At optical/ultraviolet energies, blazars display an underlying thermal (unpolarized) contribution from the accretion disc, torus and line emitting regions, diluting the polarized emission from the jet-component. Optical polarimetry can be used to disentangle the thermal and non-thermal components, and place constraints on the particle populations and acceleration mechanisms responsible for the non-thermal emission. We present the results of a linear optical spectropolarimetric observing campaign of 18 blazars (6 BLLs and 12 FSRQs) undertaken with the Southern African Large Telescope between 2016 and 2022. This was done to observe these systems during flaring states, as well as long term monitoring of PKS1510-089, AP Lib and PKS 1034-293. The observations traced the frequency dependence of the degree and angle of polarization, as well as changes in the spectral line strengths. We investigated possible correlations between the polarization and other observed characteristics for the sources. While an indication of correlation was found between the frequency dependence and the average level of polarization for some sources, a correlation was not found for the population as a whole. These results highlight that continuous observations and in-depth modelling of polarization and its frequency dependence is required to obtain a more holistic view of TeV blazars., Comment: 17 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Contemporaneous multiwavelength observations with H.E.S.S., SALT, Fermi-LAT, Swift, and ATOM show that the blazar PKS 1510-089 suffered a significant decrease in its optical flux, degree of optical polarization and high-energy gamma-ray (E > 100 MeV) flux since July 2021. Meanwhile, the X-ray and very-high-energy gamma-ray (E > 100 GeV) fluxes remained steady throughout 2021 and 2022. The degree of optical polarization decreased to about zero in 2022, indicating an unpolarized dominating accretion disk component in the optical-UV domain that is completely diluting the polarized electron synchrotron component. In July 2021, PKS 1510-089 exhibited a significant flux drop in the high-energy gamma-ray (by a factor 10) and optical (by a factor 5) bands and remained in this low state throughout 2022. Similarly, the optical polarization in the source vanished, resulting in the optical spectrum being fully explained through the steady flux of the accretion disk and the broad-line region. Unlike the aforementioned bands, the very-high-energy gamma-ray and X-ray fluxes did not exhibit a significant flux drop from year to year. This suggests that the steady-state very-high-energy gamma-ray and X-ray fluxes originate from a different emission region than the vanished parts of the high-energy gamma-ray and optical jet fluxes. The latter component has disappeared through either a swing of the jet away from the line-of-sight or a significant drop in the photon production efficiency of the jet close to the black hole. We discuss recent experiments in which fine particles of the organic superconductor Rb$_3$C$_{60}$ or the cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ are held in a polystyrene film that is spin-coated on to a silicon substrate with or without an intervening gold, or another inert metallic layer. From SQUID magnetisation data for Rb$_3$C$_{60}$ there appears to be a striking and completely unexpected increase in the superconducting transition temperature from $30$ to $45$~K, which is ascribed to coupling between the electrons in the superconductor and vacuum fluctuations in the electromagnetic field just above the metallic film. We argue that this could be a non-intrinsic effect associated with the presence of solid oxygen in the Pyrex sample tube. We suggest that the ferromagnetic SQUID signal observed for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ particles in polystyrene could be attributed to ferromagnetic particles or magnetic clusters of unknown origin.

Parkinsons disease (PD) is a movement disorder and the second most common neurodengerative disease but despite its relative abundance, there are no clinically accepted neuroimaging biomarkers to make prognostic predictions or differentiate between the similar atypical neurodegenerative diseases Multiple System Atrophy and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Abnormal connectivity in circuits including the motor circuit and basal ganglia have been previously shown as early markers of neurodegeneration. Therefore, we postulate the combination patterns of interregional dysconnectivity across the brain can be used to form a patient-specific predictive model of disease state and progression in PD. These models, which employ connectivity calculated from noninvasively measured functional MRI, differentially predict between PD and the atypical lookalikes, predict progression on a disease-specific scale, and predict cognitive decline. Further, we identify the connections most informative for progression and diagnosis. When predicting the one-year progression in the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) and Montreal Cognitive assessment (MoCA), mean absolute errors of 1.8 and 0.6 basis points in the prediction are achieved respectively. A balanced accuracy of 0.68 is attained when distinguishing idiopathic PD versus the lookalikes and healthy controls. We additionally find network components strongly associated with the prognostic and diagnostic tasks, particularly incorporating connections within deep nuclei, motor regions, and the Thalamus. These predictions, using an MRI modality readily available in most clinical settings, demonstrate the strong potential of fMRI connectivity as a prognostic biomarker in Parkinsons disease.

It has long been recognized that the key to unlocking the mystery of cuprate high-Tc superconductivity lies in understanding the anomalous normal state from which pairs form and condense. While many of its defining properties have been identified, they are often considered either at a singular doping level or as an isolated phenomenon as a function of doping. As a result, their relation to each other and to the pseudogap (PG), strange metal (SM) and non-superconducting (non-SC) regimes that define the cuprate phase diagram has yet to be elucidated. Here, we report a high-field in-plane MR study on several cuprate families spanning all 3 regimes that reveal a complex yet nonetheless systematic evolution of the form of the MR, with each regime possessing its own distinct scaling behavior. In the PG regime, the MR exhibits pure H/T^2 scaling at low fields and H-linearity at the highest field strengths. While the H-linearity persists inside the SM regime, the scaling changes abruptly to H/T. The size of the H-linear slope, meanwhile, is found to be correlated with both the T-linear resistivity coefficient and Tc, strengthening the characterization of the SM regime as a quantum critical phase. We interpret the omnipresence of H-linear MR across both regimes as a signature of highly anisotropic, possibly discontinuous features on the Fermi surface. Finally, within the non-SC, Fermi-liquid regime, we observe a recovery of conventional Kohler scaling. This comprehensive study establishes the distinct nature of the magnetotransport within each regime and identifies power-law scaling of the normal state MR as a defining feature of SC hole-doped cuprates. The incompatibility of such power-law scaling with any known variant of Boltzmann transport theory motivates the quest for an altogether new theoretical framework, one in which the MR is entirely decoupled from elastic impurity scattering.

Objective: New measures of human brain connectivity are needed to address gaps in the existing measures and facilitate the study of brain function, cognitive capacity, and identify early markers of human disease. Traditional approaches to measure functional connectivity between pairs of brain regions in functional MRI, such as correlation and partial correlation, fail to capture nonlinear aspects in the regional associations. We propose a new machine learning based measure of functional connectivity which efficiently captures linear and nonlinear aspects. Approach: We propose two new EC measures. The first, a machine learning based measure of effective connectivity, measures nonlinear aspects across the entire brain. The second, Structurally Projected Granger Causality adapts Granger Causal connectivity to efficiently characterize and regularize the whole brain EC connectome to respect underlying biological structural connectivity. The proposed measures are compared to traditional measures in terms of reproducibility and the ability to predict individual traits in order to demonstrate these measures internal validity. We use four repeat scans of the same individuals from the Human Connectome Project and measure the ability of the measures to predict individual subject physiologic and cognitive traits. Main results: The proposed new FC measure of ML.FC attains high reproducibility with an R squared of 0.44, while the proposed EC measure of SP.GC attains the highest predictive power with an R squared of 0.66. Hall effect and quantum oscillation measurements on high temperature cuprate superconductors show that underdoped compositions have a small Fermi surface pocket whereas when heavily overdoped, the pocket increases dramatically in size. The origin of this change in electronic structure has been unclear, but may be related to the high temperature superconductivity. Here we show that the clean overdoped single-layer cuprate Tl2Ba2CuO6+x (Tl2201) displays CDW order with a remarkably long correlation length $\xi \approx 200$ \r{A} which disappears above a hole concentration p_CDW ~ 0.265. We show that the evolution of the electronic properties of Tl2201 as the doping is lowered may be explained by a Fermi surface reconstruction which accompanies the emergence of the CDW below p_CDW. Our results demonstrate importance of CDW correlations in understanding the electronic properties of overdoped cuprates.

The "states-non-conserving" fermion density of states (DOS), deduced from the specific heat of hole-doped cuprates, could arise from a Kondo or heavy fermion-like DOS being suppressed by anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The large Fermi surface predicted by band theory and observed experimentally, is still expected for zero pseudogap, but with an effective mass corresponding to a Kondo temperature ~ 800 K. A finite pseudogap could divide it into Fermi arcs.
