This paper presents a new sample of 19 unique galaxies and galaxy groups at $z\approx1$ from the CUBS program, which is designated as the CUBSz1 sample. In this CUBSz1 sample, nine galaxies or galaxy groups show absorption features, while ten systems do not have detectable absorption with 2-$\sigma$ upper limits of log$N$(HeI)/cm$^{-2}\lesssim 13.5$ and log$N$(OV)/cm$^{-2}\lesssim 13.3$. Environmental properties of the galaxies, including galaxy overdensities, the total stellar mass and gravitational potential summed over all nearby neighbors, and the presence of local ionizing sources, are found to have a significant impact on the observed CGM absorption properties. Specifically, massive galaxies and galaxies in overdense regions exhibit a higher rate of incidence of absorption. At the same time, the observed CGM absorption properties in galaxy groups appear to be driven by the galaxy closest to the QSO sightline, rather than by the most massive galaxy or by mass-weighted properties. We introduce a total projected gravitational potential $\psi$, defined as $-\psi/G =\sum M_{{\rm halo}}/d_{{\rm proj}}$ summed over all group members, to characterize the overall galaxy environment. This projected gravitational potential correlates linearly with the maximum density detected in each sightline, consistent with higher-pressure gas being confined in deeper gravitational potential wells. In addition, we find that the radial profile of cool gas density exhibits a general decline from the inner regions to the outskirts, being in pressure balance with the hot halo. Finally, we note that the ionizing flux from nearby galaxies can generate an elevated $N$(HI)/$N$(HeI) ratio, which in turn provides a unique diagnostic of possible local sources contributing to the ionizing radiation field., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures and 1 table in the main text; 40 figures and 1 table in the appendix; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We assemble the largest CIV absorption line catalogue to date, leveraging machine learning, specifically Gaussian processes, to remove the need for visual inspection for detecting CIV absorbers. The catalogue contains probabilities classifying the reliability of the absorption system within a quasar spectrum. Our training set was a sub-sample of DR7 spectra that had no detectable CIV absorption in a large visually inspected catalogue. We used Bayesian model selection to decide between our continuum model and our absorption-line models. Using a random hold-out sample of 1301 spectra from all of the 26,030 investigated spectra in DR7 CIV catalogue, we validated our pipeline and obtained an 87% classification performance score. We found good purity and completeness values, both ~80%, when a probability of ~95% is used as the threshold. Our pipeline obtained similar CIV redshifts and rest equivalent widths to our training set. Applying our algorithm to 185,425 selected quasar spectra from SDSS DR12, we produce a catalogue of 113,775 CIV doublets with at least 95% confidence. Our catalogue provides maximum a posteriori values and credible intervals for CIV redshift, column density, and Doppler velocity dispersion. We detect CIV absorption systems with a redshift range of 1.37 $\!-\!$ 5.1, including 33 systems with a redshift larger than 5 and 549 absorbers systems with a rest equivalent width greater than 2 A at more than 95% confidence. Developing the final summative assessment of a course at the start of curriculum development is an implementation of "backward design," whereby learning objectives are identified first and the curriculum is engineered end-to-beginning to achieve them. We trained in backward design through the Professional Development Program (PDP) and adapted PDP assessment ideas for evaluation of curriculum designs and teaching efficacy. A pre-/post-quiz is an assessment administered the first and last day of a course; a learner's scores are used to measure normalized gain: the ratio of what a student learned during a course relative to what they knew entering it. The intentional process of developing a pre-/post-quiz for every course focuses the educator on the essential understanding desired of the learners exiting the course. The normalized-gain statistics for the course can then be used to evaluate the course's efficacy, and improvements to the curriculum can be monitored by tracking the normalized gains over time, using the same pre-/post-quiz. Moreover, an individual instructor may self-evaluate their teaching efficacy by tracking normalized gains from all courses over time. Classification is a general tool of science; it is used to sort and categorize biological organisms, chemical elements, astronomical objects, and many other things. In scientific classification, taxonomy often reflects shared physical properties that, in turn, may indicate shared origins and/or evolution. A "hands-on" galaxy-classification activity developed and implemented by Professional Development Program (PDP) participants, for a high-school summer STEM enrichment program, has been adopted for various age groups and venues, from young (K-3) to college students. We detail the basic tools required, outline the general activity, and describe the modifications to the activity based on learners' ages and learning objectives. We describe the facilitation strategies learned through PDP training and used when implementing the activity, including prompts to motivate the students. We present the first empirical constraints on the turbulent velocity field of the diffuse circumgalactic medium around four luminous QSOs at $z\!\approx\!0.5$--1.1. Spatially extended nebulae of $\approx\!50$--100 physical kpc in diameter centered on the QSOs are revealed in [OII]$\lambda\lambda\,3727,3729$ and/or [OIII]$\lambda\,5008$ emission lines in integral field spectroscopic observations obtained using MUSE on the VLT. We measure the second- and third-order velocity structure functions (VSFs) over a range of scales, from $\lesssim\!5$ kpc to $\approx\!20$--50 kpc, to quantify the turbulent energy transfer between different scales in these nebulae. While no constraints on the energy injection and dissipation scales can be obtained from the current data, we show that robust constraints on the power-law slope of the VSFs can be determined after accounting for the effects of atmospheric seeing, spatial smoothing, and large-scale bulk flows. Out of the four QSO nebulae studied, one exhibits VSFs in spectacular agreement with the Kolmogorov law, expected for isotropic, homogeneous, and incompressible turbulent flows. The other three fields exhibit a shallower decline in the VSFs from large to small scales. However, with a limited dynamic range in the spatial scales in seeing-limited data, no constraints can be obtained for the VSF slopes of these three nebulae. For the QSO nebula consistent with the Kolmogorov law, we determine a turbulence energy cascade rate of $\approx\!0.2$ cm$^{2}$ s$^{-3}$. This paper presents a systematic study of the photoionization and thermodynamic properties of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) as traced by rest-frame ultraviolet absorption lines around 26 galaxies at redshift $z\lesssim1$. The study utilizes both high-quality far-ultraviolet and optical spectra of background QSOs and deep galaxy redshift surveys to characterize the gas density, temperature, and pressure of individual absorbing components and to resolve their internal non-thermal motions. The derived gas density spans more than three decades, from $\log (n_{\rm H}/{\rm cm^{-3}}) \approx -4$ to $-1$, while the temperature of the gas is confined in a narrow range of $\log (T/{\rm K})\approx 4.3\pm 0.3$. In addition, a weak anti-correlation between gas density and temperature is observed, consistent with the expectation of the gas being in photoionization equilibrium. Furthermore, decomposing the observed line widths into thermal and non-thermal contributions reveals that more than 30% of the components at $z\lesssim 1$ exhibit line widths driven by non-thermal motions, in comparison to $<20$% found at $z\approx 2$-3. Attributing the observed non-thermal line widths to intra-clump turbulence, we find that massive quenched galaxies on average exhibit higher non-thermal broadening/turbulent energy in their CGM compared to star-forming galaxies at $z\lesssim 1$. Finally, strong absorption features from multiple ions covering a wide range of ionization energy (e.g., from Mg II to O IV) can be present simultaneously in a single absorption system with kinematically aligned component structure, but the inferred pressure in different phases may differ by a factor of $\approx 10$., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by CaII 3934,3969 and NaI 5891,5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 < log M_*/M_sun < 10.6. The quasar-galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R_perp < 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies' star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densities N(CaII) > 10^12.5 cm^-2 (N(NaI) > 10^12.0 cm^-2) occur with an incidence f_C(CaII) = 0.63^+0.10_-0.11 (f_C(NaI) = 0.57^+0.10_-0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence of f_C or the rest-frame equivalent widths W_r(CaII K) or W_r(NaI 5891) on R_perp or M_*. Instead, W_r(CaII K) is correlated with local SFR at >3sigma significance, suggesting that CaII traces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within +/-50 km/s of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Delta v_90) are universally 30-177 km/s larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist at R_perp > 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening and W_r(CaII K) (W_r(NaI 5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky Way E(B-V)-W_r relations at >3sigma significance., Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables. The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize the absorber-associated galaxies. We find 23 unique absorber-associated galaxies, with an average of one associated galaxy per absorber. For seven absorbers, all with $<10\%$ solar metallicities, we find no associated galaxies with $\log M_\star \gtrsim 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir}$ and $|\Delta v|/v_{esc} \le$ 1.5 with respect to the absorber. We do not find any strong correlations between the metallicities or HI column densities of the gas and most of the galaxy properties, except for the stellar mass of the galaxies: the low-metallicity ([X/H] $\le -1.4$) systems have a probability of $0.39^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ for having a host galaxy with $\log M_\star \ge 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir} \le 1.5$, while the higher metallicity absorbers have a probability of $0.78^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$. This implies metal-enriched pLLSs/LLSs at $z<1$ are typically associated with the CGM of galaxies with $\log M_\star > 9.0$, whereas low-metallicity pLLSs/LLSs are found in more diverse locations, with one population arising in the CGM of galaxies and another more broadly distributed in overdense regions of the universe. Using absorbers not associated with galaxies, we estimate the unweighted geometric mean metallicity of the intergalactic medium to be [X/H] $\lesssim -2.1$ at $z<1$, which is lower than previously estimated., Comment: Key figures: 13 and 18. Metallicity estimates of circumgalactic gas based on absorption line measurements typically require photoionization modeling to account for unseen ionization states. We explore the impact of uncertainties in the extreme ultraviolet background (EUVB) radiation on such metallicity determinations for the z < 1 circumgalactic medium (CGM). In particular, we study how uncertainties in the power-law slope of the EUV radiation, $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$, from active galactic nuclei affect metallicity estimates in a sample of 34 absorbers with HI column densities between 15.25 < log ($\mathrm{N_{HI}}$ / $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$) < 17.25 and measured metal ion column densities. We demonstrate the sensitivity of metallicity estimates to changes in the EUV power-law slope of active galactic nuclei, $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$, at low redshift (z < 1), showing derived absorber metallicities increase on average by approximately 0.3 dex as the EUV slope is hardened from $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$ = -2.0 to -1.4. We use Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling of photoionization models with $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$ as a free parameter to derive metallicities for these absorbers. The current sample of absorbers does not provide a robust constraint on the slope, $\mathrm{\alpha_{EUVB}}$, itself; we discuss how future analyses may provide stronger constraints. Marginalizing over the uncertainty in the slope of the background, we find the average uncertainties in the metallicity determinations increase from 0.08 dex to 0.14 dex when switching from a fixed EUVB slope to one that freely varies. Thus, we demonstrate that EUVB uncertainties can be included in ionization models while still allowing for robust metallicity inferences., Comment: 42 figures (34 in appendix), 3 tables. We present the discovery of neutral gas detected in both damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (DLA) and HI 21-cm emission outside of the stellar body of a galaxy, the first such detection in the literature. A joint analysis between the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey and the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey reveals an HI bridge connecting two interacting dwarf galaxies (log$(M_{\text{star}}/\text{M}_{\odot}) = 8.5 \pm 0.2$) that host a $z = 0.026$ DLA with log[$N$(HI)/cm$^{-2}$]$ = 20.60 \pm 0.05$ toward the QSO J2339-5523 ($z_{\text{QSO}} = 1.35$). At impact parameters of $d = 6$ and $33$ kpc, the dwarf galaxies have no companions more luminous than $\approx 0.05L_{*}$ within at least $\Delta v = \pm 300$ km s$^{-1}$ and $d \approx 350$ kpc. HI 21-cm emission is spatially coincident with the DLA at the 2-3$\sigma$ level per spectral channel over several adjacent beams. However, HI 21-cm absorption is not detected against the radio-bright QSO; if the background UV and radio sources are spatially aligned, the gas is either warm or clumpy (with spin temperature to covering factor ratio $T_{s}/f_{c} > 1880$ K). VLT-MUSE observations demonstrate that the $\alpha$-element abundance of the ionized ISM is consistent with the DLA ($\approx 10$% solar), suggesting that the neutral gas envelope is perturbed ISM gas. This study showcases the impact of dwarf-dwarf interactions on the physical and chemical state of neutral gas outside of star-forming regions. We present a detailed study of two partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) of neutral hydrogen column density $N_\mathrm{H\,I}\approx(1-3)\times10^{16}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ discovered at $z=0.5$ in the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS). Available far-ultraviolet spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and optical echelle spectra from MIKE on the Magellan Telescopes enable a comprehensive ionization analysis of diffuse circumgalactic gas based on resolved kinematics and abundance ratios of atomic species spanning five different ionization stages. These data provide unambiguous evidence of kinematically aligned multi-phase gas that masquerades as a single-phase structure and can only be resolved by simultaneous accounting of the full range of observed ionic species. Both systems are resolved into multiple components with inferred $\alpha$-element abundance varying from $[\alpha/\text{H}]\approx\!{-0.8}$ to near solar and densities spanning over two decades from $\log n_\mathrm{H}\mathrm{cm}^{-3}\approx\!-2.2$ to $<-4.3$. Available deep galaxy survey data from the CUBS program taken with VLT/MUSE, Magellan/LDSS3-C and Magellan/IMACS reveal that the $z=0.47$ system is located 55 kpc from a star-forming galaxy with prominent Balmer absorption of stellar mass $M_\star\approx2\times10^{10}M_\odot$, while the $z=0.54$ system resides in an over-dense environment of 11 galaxies within 750 kpc in projected distance, with the most massive being a luminous red galaxy of $M_\star\approx2\times10^{11}M_\odot$ at 375 kpc. The study of these two pLLSs adds to an emerging picture of the complex, multiphase circumgalactic gas that varies in chemical abundances and density on small spatial scales in diverse galaxy environments. (Abridged) We present a systematic investigation of physical conditions and elemental abundances in four optically thick Lyman-limit systems (LLSs) at $z=0.36-0.6$ discovered within the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS). CUBS LLSs exhibit multi-component kinematic structure and a complex mix of multiphase gas, with associated metal transitions from multiple ionization states that span several hundred km/s in line-of-sight velocity. Specifically, higher column density components (log N(HI)>16) in all four absorbers comprise dynamically cool gas with $\langle T \rangle =(2\pm1) \times10^4\,$K and modest non-thermal broadening of $5\pm3\,$ km/s. The high quality of the QSO absorption spectra allows us to infer the physical conditions of the gas, using a detailed ionization modeling that takes into account the resolved component structures of HI and metal transitions. The range of inferred gas densities indicates that these absorbers consist of spatially compact clouds with a median line-of-sight thickness of $160^{+140}_{-50}$ pc. While obtaining robust metallicity constraints for the low-density, highly ionized phase remains challenging due to the uncertain N(HI), we demonstrate that the cool-phase gas in LLSs has a median metallicity of $\mathrm{[\alpha/H]_{1/2}}=-0.7^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, with a 16-84 percentile range of $\mathrm{[\alpha/H]}=(-1.3,-0.1)$. Furthermore, the wide range of inferred elemental abundance ratios ($\mathrm{[C/\alpha]}$, $\mathrm{[N/\alpha]}$, and $\mathrm{[Fe/\alpha]}$) indicate a diversity of chemical enrichment histories. Combining the absorption data with deep galaxy survey data characterizing the galaxy environment of these absorbers, we discuss the physical connection between star-forming regions in galaxies and diffuse gas associated with optically thick absorption systems in the $z<1$ circumgalactic medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS after a minor revision. 18 pages, 11 figures, and a nine-page Appendix with four additional figures

We report the serendipitous detection of an H$_{2}$-bearing damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber at z = 0.576 in the spectrum of the QSO J0111-0316 in the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey. Spectroscopic observations from HST-COS in the far-ultraviolet reveal a damped absorber with log[N(HI)/cm^-2] = 20.1 +/- 0.2 and log[N(H$_{2}$)/cm^-2] = 18.97 (-0.06, +0.05). The diffuse molecular gas is found in two velocity components separated by dv = 60 km/s, with >99.9% of the total H$_{2}$ column density concentrated in one component. At a metallicity of $\approx$ 50% of solar, there is evidence for Fe enhancement and dust depletion, with a dust-to-gas ratio $\kappa_{\text{O}} \approx$ 0.4. A galaxy redshift survey conducted with IMACS and LDSS-3C on Magellan reveals an overdensity of nine galaxies at projected distance d <= 600 proper kpc (pkpc) and line-of-sight velocity offset dv$_{g}$ <= 300 km/s from the absorber. The closest is a massive, early-type galaxy at d = 41 pkpc which contains $\approx$ 70% of the total stellar mass identified at d <= 310 pkpc of the H$_{2}$ absorber. The close proximity of the H$_{2}$-bearing gas to the quiescent galaxy and the Fe-enhanced chemical abundance pattern of the absorber suggest a physical connection, in contrast to a picture in which DLAs are primarily associated with gas-rich dwarfs. We present initial results from the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey (CUBS). CUBS is designed to map diffuse baryonic structures at redshift z<~1 using absorption-line spectroscopy of 15 UV-bright QSOs with matching deep galaxy survey data. CUBS QSOs are selected based on their NUV brightness to avoid biases against the presence of intervening Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) at zabs<1. We report five new LLSs of log N(HI)/cm^-2 >~ 17.2 over a total redshift survey pathlength of dz=9.3, and a number density of n(z)=0.43 (-0.18, +0.26). Considering all absorbers with log N(HI)/cm^-2 > 16.5 leads to n(z)=1.08 (-0.25, +0.31) at z<1. All LLSs exhibit a multi-component structure and associated metal transitions from multiple ionization states such as CII, CIII, MgII, SiII, SiIII, and OVI absorption. Differential chemical enrichment levels as well as ionization states are directly observed across individual components in three LLSs. We present deep galaxy survey data obtained using the VLT-MUSE integral field spectrograph and the Magellan Telescopes, reaching sensitivities necessary for detecting galaxies fainter than 0.1L* at d<~300 physical kpc (pkpc) in all five fields. A diverse range of galaxy properties is seen around these LLSs, from a low-mass dwarf galaxy pair, a co-rotating gaseous halo/disk, a star-forming galaxy, a massive quiescent galaxy, to a galaxy group. The closest galaxies have projected distances ranging from d=15 to 72 pkpc and intrinsic luminosities from ~0.01L* to ~3L*. This paper reports the discovery of spatially-extended line-emitting nebula, reaching to ~100 physical kpc (pkpc) from a damped Ly{\alpha} absorber (DLA) at z_DLA=0.313 along the sightline toward QSO PKS1127-145 (z_QSO=1.188). This DLA was known to be associated with a galaxy group of dynamical mass M_group ~3e12 M_sun, but its physical origin remained ambiguous. New wide-field integral field observations revealed a giant nebula detected in [OII], H{\beta}, [OIII], H{\alpha}, and [NII] emission, with the line-emitting gas following closely the motions of group galaxies. One of the denser streams passes directly in front of the QSO with kinematics consistent with the absorption profiles recorded in the QSO echelle spectra. The emission morphology, kinematics, and line ratios of the nebula suggest that shocks and turbulent mixing layers, produced as a result of stripped gaseous streams moving at supersonic speed across the ambient hot medium, contribute significantly to the ionization of the gas. While the DLA may not be associated with any specific detected member of the group, both the kinematic and dust properties are consistent with the DLA originating in streams of gas stripped from sub-L* group members at <~25 pkpc from the QSO sightline. This study demonstrates that gas stripping in low-mass galaxy groups is effective in releasing metal-enriched gas from star-forming regions, producing absorption systems in QSO spectra, and that combining absorption and emission-line observations provides an exciting new opportunity for studying gas and galaxy co-evolution., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in ApJL

The metal-enriched gas probed by pLLSs and LLSs confirms that galaxies that have been enriching their CGM over billions of years. Surprisingly, despite this enrichment, there is also abundant metal-poor CGM gas (41-59% of the pLLSs have [X/H]<-1.4), representing a reservoir of near-pristine gas around z<1 galaxies. We present a neutral hydrogen-selected absorption-line survey of gas with HI column densities 152 orders of magnitude at any given N(HI), indicating a wide range of metallicities (from solar to <1/100 solar). In the range 16.2

Previous, large samples of quasar absorption spectra have indicated some evidence for relative variations in the fine-structure constant ($\Delta\alpha/\alpha$) across the sky. However, they were likely affected by long-range distortions of the wavelength calibration, so it is important to establish a statistical sample of more reliable results, from multiple telescopes. Here we triple the sample of $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$ measurements from the Subaru Telescope which have been `supercalibrated' to correct for long-range distortions. A blinded analysis of the metallic ions in 6 intervening absorption systems in two Subaru quasar spectra provides no evidence for $\alpha$ variation, with a weighted mean of $\Delta\alpha/\alpha=3.0\pm2.8_{\rm stat}\pm2.0_{\rm sys}$ parts per million (1$\sigma$ statistical and systematic uncertainties). The main remaining systematic effects are uncertainties in the long-range distortion corrections, absorption profile models, and errors from redispersing multiple quasar exposures onto a common wavelength grid. The results also assume that terrestrial isotopic abundances prevail in the absorbers; assuming only the dominant terrestrial isotope is present significantly lowers $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$, though it is still consistent with zero. Given the location of the two quasars on the sky, our results do not support the evidence for spatial $\alpha$ variation, especially when combined with the 21 other recent measurements which were corrected for, or resistant to, long-range distortions. We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager spectroscopy of the four putative images of the lensed quasar candidate J014709+463037 recently discovered by Berghea et al. (2017). The data verify the source as a quadruply lensed, broad absorption-line quasar having z_S = 2.377 +/- 0.007. We detect intervening absorption in the FeII 2586, 2600, MgII 2796, 2803, and/or CIV 1548, 1550 transitions in eight foreground systems, three of which have redshifts consistent with the photometric-redshift estimate reported for the lensing galaxy (z_L ~ 0.57). By virtue of their positions on the sky, the source images probe these absorbers over transverse physical scales of ~0.3-21 kpc, permitting assessment of the variation in metal-line equivalent width W_r as a function of sight-line separation. We measure differences in W_r,2796 of <40% across all sight-line pairs subtending 7-21 kpc, suggestive of a high degree of spatial coherence for MgII-absorbing material. W_r,2600 is observed to vary by >50% over the same scales across the majority of sight-line pairs, while CIV absorption exhibits a wide range in W_r,1548 differences of ~5-80% within transverse distances less than ~3 kpc. J014709+463037 is one of only a handful of z > 2 quadruply lensed systems for which all four source images are very bright (r = 15.4-17.7 mag) and are easily separated in ground-based seeing conditions. We measured metallicities for 33 z=3.4-4.2 absorption line systems drawn from a sample of H I-selected-Lyman limit systems (LLSs) identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectra and stratified based on metal line features. We obtained higher-resolution spectra with the Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager, selecting targets according to our stratification scheme in an effort to fully sample the LLS population metallicity distribution. We established a plausible range of H I column densities and measured column densities (or limits) for ions of carbon, silicon, and aluminum, finding ionization-corrected metallicities or upper limits. Interestingly, our ionization models were better constrained with enhanced $\alpha$-to-aluminum abundances, with a median abundance ratio of [$\alpha$/Al]=0.3. Measured metallicities were generally low, ranging from [M/H]=-3 to -1.68, with even lower metallicities likely for some systems with upper limits. Using survival statistics to incorporate limits, we constructed the cumulative distribution function (CDF) for LLS metallicities. Recent models of galaxy evolution propose that galaxies replenish their gas from the low-metallicity intergalactic medium (IGM) via high-density H I "flows" and eject enriched interstellar gas via outflows. Thus, there has been some expectation that LLSs at the peak of cosmic star formation ($z\approx3$) might have a bimodal metallicity distribution. We modeled our CDF as a mix of two Gaussian distributions, one reflecting the metallicity of the IGM and the other representative of the interstellar medium of star-forming galaxies. This bimodal distribution yielded a poor fit. Cold accretion is a primary growth mechanism of simulated galaxies, yet observational evidence of "cold flows" at redshifts where they should be most efficient ($z=2$-4) is scarce. In simulations, cold streams manifest as Lyman-limit absorption systems (LLSs) with low heavy-element abundances similar to those of the diffuse IGM. Here we report on an abundance survey of 17 H I-selected LLSs at $z=3.2$-4.4 which exhibit no metal absorption in SDSS spectra. Using medium-resolution spectra obtained at Magellan, we derive ionization-corrected metallicities (or limits) with a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo sampling that accounts for the large uncertainty in $N_{\rm HI}$ measurements typical of LLSs. The metal-poor LLS sample overlaps with the IGM in metallicity and is best described by a model where $71^{+13}_{-11}\%$ are drawn from the IGM chemical abundance distribution. These represent roughly half of all LLSs at these redshifts, suggesting that 28-40$\%$ of the general LLS population at $z\sim3.7$ could trace unprocessed gas. An ancillary sample of ten LLSs without any a priori metal-line selection is best fit with $48^{+14}_{-12}\%$ of metallicities drawn from the IGM. We compare these results with regions of a moving-mesh simulation; the simulation finds only half as many baryons in IGM-metallicity LLSs, and most of these lie beyond the virial radius of the nearest galaxy halo. We report the serendipitous detection of a 0.2 L$^*$, Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting galaxy at redshift 2.5 at an impact parameter of 50 kpc from a bright background QSO sightline. A high-resolution spectrum of the QSO reveals a partial Lyman-limit absorption system ($N_\mathrm{HI}=10^{16.94\pm0.10}$ cm$^{-2}$) with many associated metal absorption lines at the same redshift as the foreground galaxy. Using photoionization models that carefully treat measurement errors and marginalise over uncertainties in the shape and normalisation of the ionizing radiation spectrum, we derive the total hydrogen column density $N_\mathrm{H}=10^{19.4\pm0.3}$ cm$^{-2}$, and show that all the absorbing clouds are metal enriched, with $Z=0.1$-$0.6 Z_\odot$. These metallicities and the system's large velocity width ($436$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$) suggest the gas is produced by an outflowing wind. Using an expanding shell model we estimate a mass outflow rate of $\sim5 M_\odot\,$yr$^{-1}$. Our photoionization model yields extremely small sizes ($<$100-500 pc) for the absorbing clouds, which we argue are typical of high column density absorbers in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). Given these small sizes and extreme kinematics, it is unclear how the clumps survive in the CGM without being destroyed by hydrodynamic instabilities. The small cloud sizes imply that even state-of-the-art cosmological simulations require more than a $1000$-fold improvement in mass resolution to resolve the hydrodynamics relevant for cool gas in the CGM., Comment: Fixed an incorrect reference to D'Odorico & Petitjean 2001, A&A, 370, 729. We present the cross-correlation function of MgII absorbers with respect to a volume-limited sample of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at z=0.45-0.60 using the largest MgII absorber sample and a new LRG sample from SDSS DR7. We present the clustering signal of absorbers on projected scales r_p = 0.3-35 Mpc/h in four Wr(2796) bins spanning Wr(2796)=0.4-5.6A. We found that on average MgII absorbers reside in halos < log M_h > \approx 12.1, similar to the halo mass of an L_* galaxy. We report that the weakest absorbers in our sample with W_r(2796)=0.4-1.1A reside in relatively massive halos with < log M_h > \approx 12.5^{+0.6}_{-1.3}, while stronger absorbers reside in halos of similar or lower masses < log M_h > \approx 11.6^{+0.9}. We compared our bias data points, b, and the frequency distribution function of absorbers, f_{W_r}, with a simple model incorporating an isothermal density profile to mimic the distribution of absorbing gas in halos. We also compared the bias data points with Tinker & Chen (2008) who developed halo occupation distribution models of MgII absorbers that are constrained by b and f_{W_r}. The simple isothermal model can be ruled at a \approx 2.8\sigma level mostly because of its inability to reproduce f_{W_r}. However, b values are consistent with both models, including TC08. In addition, we show that the mean b of absorbers does not decrease beyond W_r(2796) \approx 1.6A. The flat or potential upturn of b for Wr(2796) \gtrsim 1.6A absorbers suggests the presence of additional cool gas in massive halos., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have performed an analysis of over 34,000 MgII doublets at 0.36 < z < 2.29 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data-Release 7 quasar spectra; the catalog, advanced data products, and tools for analysis are publicly available. The catalog was divided into 14 small redshift bins with roughly 2500 doublets in each, and from Monte-Carlo simulations, we estimate 50% completeness at rest equivalent width W_r ~ 0.8 Angstrom. The equivalent-width frequency distribution is described well by an exponential model at all redshifts, and the distribution becomes flatter with increasing redshift, i.e., there are more strong systems relative to weak ones. Direct comparison with previous SDSS MgII surveys reveal that we recover at least 70% of the doublets in these other catalogs, in addition to detecting thousands of new systems. We discuss how these surveys come by their different results, which qualitatively agree but, due to the very small uncertainties, differ by a statistically significant amount. The estimated physical cross-section of MgII-absorbing galaxy halos increased three-fold, approximately, from z = 0.4 --> 2.3, while the W_r >= 1 Angstrom absorber line density grew, dN_MgII/dX, by roughly 45%. In typical astrophysical environments, the abundance of heavy elements ranges from 0.001 to 2 times the solar concentration. Lower abundances have been seen in select stars in the Milky Way's halo and in two quasar absorption systems at redshift z=3. These are widely interpreted as relics from the early universe, when all gas possessed a primordial chemistry. Before now there have been no direct abundance measurements from the first Gyr after the Big Bang, when the earliest stars began synthesizing elements. Here we report observations of hydrogen and heavy element absorption in a quasar spectrum at z=7.04, when the universe was just 772 Myr old (5.6% its present age). We detect a large column of neutral hydrogen but no corresponding heavy elements, limiting the chemical abundance to less than 1/10,000 the solar level if the gas is in a gravitationally bound protogalaxy, or less than 1/1,000 solar if it is diffuse and unbound. If the absorption is truly intergalactic, it would imply that the universe was neither ionized by starlight nor chemically enriched in this neighborhood at z~7. If it is gravitationally bound, the inferred abundance is too low to promote efficient cooling, and the system would be a viable site to form the predicted but as-yet unobserved massive population III stars in the early universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature (6 December 2012). We present a detailed study of HI and metals for 110 MgII absorption systems discovered at 1.98 <= z <= 5.33 in the infrared spectra of high redshift QSOs. Using new measurements of rest-frame UV lines from optical spectra of the same targets, we compare the high redshift sample with carefully constructed low redshift control samples from the literature to study evolutionary trends from z=0 --> 5.33 (>12 Gyr). We observe a significant strengthening in the characteristic N(HI) for fixed MgII equivalent width as one moves toward higher redshift. Indeed at our sample's mean zbar=3.402, all MgII systems are either damped Ly-alpha absorbers or sub-DLAs, with 40.7% of systems exceeding the DLA threshold (compared to 16.7% at zbar=0.927). We set lower limits on the metallicity of the MgII systems where we can measure HI; these results are consistent with the full DLA population. The classical MgII systems (W(2796)=0.3-1.0 Ang), which preferentially associate with sub-DLAs, are quite metal rich at ~0.1 Solar. We applied quantitative classification metrics to our absorbers to compare with low redshift populations, finding that weak systems are similar to classic MgII absorbers at low redshift. The strong systems either have very large MgII and FeII velocity spreads implying non-virialized dynamics, or are more quiescent DLAs. There is tentative evidence that the kinetically complex systems evolve in similar fashion to the global star formation rate. We speculate that if weaker MgII systems represent accreting gas as suggested by recent studies of galaxy-absorber inclinations, then their high metal abundance suggests re-accretion of recently ejected material rather than first-time infall from the metal-poor IGM, even at early times., Comment: 41 pages, 21 figures, 17 tables, submitted to ApJ. We have vastly increased the CIV statistics at intermediate redshift by surveying the thousands of quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data-Release 7. We visually verified over 16,000 CIV systems with 1.46 < z < 4.55---a sample size that renders Poisson error negligible. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations show we are approximately 50% complete down to rest equivalent widths W_r ~ 0.6 \AA. We analyzed the sample as a whole and in ten small redshift bins with approximately 1500 doublets each. The equivalent width frequency distributions f(W_r) were well modeled by an exponential, with little evolution in shape. In contrast with previous studies that modeled the frequency distribution as a single power law, the fitted exponential gives a finite mass density for the CIV ions. The co-moving line density dN_CIV/dX evolved smoothly with redshift, increasing by a factor of 2.37+/-0.09 from z = 4.55 to 1.96, then plateauing at dN_CIV/dX ~ 0.34 for z = 1.96 to 1.46. Comparing our SDSS sample with z < 1 (ultraviolet) and z > 5 (infrared) surveys, we see an approximately 10-fold increase in dN_CIV/dX over z ~ 6 --> 0, for W_r >= 0.6 \AA. We present a new determination of the intergalactic CIV mass density at 4.3 < z < 6.3. Our constraints are derived from high signal-to-noise spectra of seven quasars at z > 5.8 obtained with the newly commissioned FIRE spectrograph on the Magellan Baade telescope, coupled with six observations of northern objects taken from the literature. We confirm the presence of a downturn in the CIV abundance at =5.66 by a factor of 4.1 relative to its value at =4.96, as measured in the same sightlines. In the FIRE sample, a strong system previously reported in the literature as CIV at z=5.82 is re-identified as MgII at z=2.78, leading to a substantial downward revision in $\Omega_{CIV}$ for these prior studies. Additionally we confirm the presence of at least two systems with low-ionization CII, SiII, and OI absorption but relatively weak signal from CIV. From 2001 to 2007, COSMOS provided a teaching and outreach venue for the Center for Adaptive Optics Professional Development Program (CfAO PDP). COSMOS is a four-week residential mathematics and science summer program for high-school students organized by the University of California on four of its campuses. Two topical science courses comprised each COSMOS cluster. An astronomy course has always formed a basis for the CfAO PDP-affiliated cluster. The course included a variety of pedagogical techniques to address a diversity of learners and goals. We identified 24 SiIV absorption systems with z <~ 1 from a blind survey of 49 low-redshift quasars with archival Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra. We relied solely on the characteristic wavelength separation of the doublet to automatically detect candidates. After visual inspection, we defined a sample of 20 definite (group G = 1) and 4 "highly-likely" (G = 2) doublets with rest equivalent widths W_r for both lines detected at > 3 sigma. The absorber line density of the G = 1 doublets was dN_SiIV/dX = 1.4+0.4/-0.3 for log N(Si+3) > 12.9. The best-fit power law to the G = 1 frequency distribution of column densities f(N(Si+3)) had normalization k = (1.2+0.5/-0.4) x 10^-14 cm2 and slope alpha = -1.6+0.3/-0.3. Using the power-law model of f(N(Si+3)), we measured the Si+3 mass density relative to the critical density: Omega(Si+3) = (3.7+2.8/-1.7) x 10^-8 for 13 < log N(Si+3) < 15. From Monte Carlo sampling of the distributions, we estimated our value to be a factor of 4.8+3.0/-1.9 higher than the 2 < z < 4.5 . From a simple linear fit to Omega(Si+3) over the age of the Universe, we estimated a slow and steady increase from z = 5.5 --> 0 with dOmega/dt_age = (0.61+/-0.23) x 10^-8 Gyr^-1. We surveyed the HST UV spectra of 49 low-redshift quasars for z < 1 CIV candidates, relying solely on the characteristic wavelength separation of the doublet. After consideration of the defining traits of CIV doublets (e.g., consistent line profiles, other associated transitions, etc.), we defined a sample of 38 definite (group G = 1) and five likely (G = 2) doublets with rest equivalent widths W_r for both lines detected at >= 3 sigma. We conducted Monte-Carlo completeness tests to measure the unblocked redshift (dz) and co-moving pathlength (dX) over which we were sensitive to CIV doublets of a range of equivalent widths and column densities. The absorber line density of (G = 1+2) doublets is dN/dX = 4.1+0.7/-0.6 for log N(C^+3) >= 13.2, and dN/dX has not evolved significantly since z = 5. The best-fit power-law to the G = 1 frequency distribution of column densities f(N(C^+3)) = k(N(C^+3)/N_0)^alpha_N has coefficient k = (0.67+0.18/-0.16) x 10^-14 cm^2 and exponent alpha_N = -1.50+0.17/-0.19, where N_0 = 10^14 cm^-2. Using the power-law model of f(N(C^+3)), we measured the C^+3 mass density relative to the critical density: Omega(C^+3) = (6.20+1.82/-1.52) x 10^-8 for 13 <= log N(C^+3) <= 15. This value is a 2.8+/-0.7 increase in Omega(C^+3) compared to the error-weighted mean from several 1 < z < 5 surveys for CIV absorbers. A simple linear regression to Omega(C^+3) over the age of the Universe indicates that Omega(C^+3) has slowly but steadily increased from z = 5 --> 0, with dOmega(C^+3)/dt_age = (0.42+/-0.2) x 10^-8 Gyr^-1., Comment: 61 pages; accepted by ApJ; includes changes based on referee report

We present a detailed analysis of the intergalactic metal-line absorption systems in the archival HST/STIS and FUSE ultraviolet spectra of the low-redshift quasar PKS1302-102 (z_QSO = 0.2784). We supplement the archive data with CLOUDY ionization models and a survey of galaxies in the quasar field. There are 15 strong Lya absorbers with column densities logN_HI > 14. Of these, six are associated with at least CIII 977 absorption (logN(C^++) > 13); this implies a redshift density dN_CIII/dz = 36+13/-9 (68% confidence limits) for the five detections with rest equivalent width W_r > 50 mA. Two systems show OVI 1031,1037 absorption in addition to CIII (logN(O^+5) > 14). One is a partial Lyman limit system (logN_HI = 17) with associated CIII, OVI, and SiIII 1206 absorption. There are three tentative OVI systems that do not have CIII detected. For one OVI doublet with both lines detected at 3 sigma with W_r > 50 mA, dN_OVI/dz = 7+9/-4. We also search for OVI doublets without Lya absorption but identify none. From CLOUDY modeling, these metal-line systems have metallicities spanning the range -4 < [M/H] < -0.3. The two OVI systems with associated CIII absorption cannot be single-phase, collisionally-ionized media based on the relative abundances of the metals and kinematic arguments. From the galaxy survey, we discover that the absorption systems are in a diverse set of galactic environments.
