Optical microscopy has long been the standard method for diagnosis in cytopathology. Whole slide scanners can image and digitize large sample areas automatically, but are slow, expensive and therefore not widely available. Clinical diagnosis of cytology specimens is especially challenging since these samples are both spread over large areas and thick, which requires 3D capture. Here, we introduce a new parallelized microscope for scanning thick specimens across extremely wide fields-of-view (54x72 mm^2) at 1.2 and 0.6 {\mu}m resolutions, accompanied by machine learning software to rapidly assess these 16 gigapixel scans. This Multi-Camera Array Scanner (MCAS) comprises 48 micro-cameras closely arranged to simultaneously image different areas. By capturing 624 megapixels per snapshot, the MCAS is significantly faster than most conventional whole slide scanners. We used this system to digitize entire cytology samples (scanning three entire slides in 3D in just several minutes) and demonstrate two machine learning techniques to assist pathologists: first, an adenocarcinoma detection model in lung specimens (0.73 recall); second, a slide-level classification model of lung smears (0.969 AUC).

Medical coding is essential for standardizing clinical data and communication but is often time-consuming and prone to errors. Traditional Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods struggle with automating coding due to the large label space, lengthy text inputs, and the absence of supporting evidence annotations that justify code selection. Recent advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer promising solutions to these challenges. In this work, we introduce MedCodER, a Generative AI framework for automatic medical coding that leverages extraction, retrieval, and re-ranking techniques as core components. MedCodER achieves a micro-F1 score of 0.60 on International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code prediction, significantly outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, we present a new dataset containing medical records annotated with disease diagnoses, ICD codes, and supporting evidence texts (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13308316). Ablation tests confirm that MedCodER's performance depends on the integration of each of its aforementioned components, as performance declines when these components are evaluated in isolation.

The identification of persistent radio sources (PRSs) coincident with two repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) supports FRB theories requiring a compact central engine. However, deep non-detections in other cases highlight the diversity of repeating FRBs and their local environments. Here, we perform a systematic search for radio sources towards 37 CHIME/FRB repeaters using their arcminute localizations and a combination of archival surveys and targeted observations. Through multi-wavelength analysis of individual radio sources, we identify two (20181030A-S1 and 20190417A-S1) for which we disfavor an origin of either star formation or an active galactic nucleus in their host galaxies and thus consider them candidate PRSs. We do not find any associated PRSs for the majority of the repeating FRBs in our sample. For 8 FRB fields with Very Large Array imaging, we provide deep limits on the presence of PRSs that are 2--4 orders of magnitude fainter than the PRS associated with FRB\,20121102A. Using Very Large Array Sky Survey imaging of all 37 fields, we constrain the rate of luminous ($\gtrsim$10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$) PRSs associated with repeating FRBs to be low. Within the context of FRB-PRS models, we find that 20181030A-S1 and 20190417A-S1 can be reasonably explained within the context of magnetar, hypernebulae, gamma-ray burst afterglow, or supernova ejecta models -- although we note that both sources follow the radio luminosity versus rotation measure relationship predicted in the nebula model framework. The exoplanet sub-Neptune population currently poses a conundrum. Are small-size planets volatile-rich cores without atmosphere, or are they rocky cores surrounded by H-He envelope? To test the different hypotheses from an observational point of view, a large sample of small-size planets with precise mass and radius measurements is the first necessary step. On top of that, much more information will likely be needed, including atmospheric characterisation and a demographic perspective on their bulk properties. We present the concept and strategy of THIRSTEE, a project which aims at shedding light on the composition of the sub-Neptune population across stellar types by increasing their number and improving the accuracy of bulk density measurements, as well as investigating their atmospheres and performing statistical, demographic analysis. We report the first results of the program, characterising a 2-planet system around the M dwarf TOI-406. We analyse TESS and ground-based photometry, together with ESPRESSO and NIRPS/HARPS RVs to derive the orbital parameters and investigate the internal composition of the 2 planets orbiting TOI-406, which have radii and masses of $R_b = 1.32 \pm 0.12 R_{\oplus}$, $M_b = 2.08_{-0.22}^{+0.23} M_{\oplus}$ and $R_c = 2.08_{-0.15}^{+0.16} R_{\oplus}$, $M_c = 6.57_{-0.90}^{+1.00} M_{\oplus}$, and periods of $3.3$ and $13.2$ days, respectively. Planet b is consistent with an Earth-like composition, while planet c is compatible with multiple internal composition models, including volatile-rich planets without H/He atmospheres. The 2 planets are located in 2 distinct regions in the mass-density diagram, supporting the existence of a density gap among small exoplanets around M dwarfs. With an equilibrium temperature of only 368 K, TOI-406 c stands up as a particularly interesting target for atmospheric characterisation with JWST in the low-temperature regime., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures. We introduce an extension to the AthenaK code for general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) in dynamical spacetimes using a 3+1 conservative Eulerian formulation. Like the fixed-spacetime GRMHD solver, we use standard finite-volume methods to evolve the fluid and a constrained transport scheme to preserve the divergence-free constraint for the magnetic field. We also utilize a first-order flux correction (FOFC) scheme to reduce the need for an artificial atmosphere and optionally enforce a maximum principle to improve robustness. We demonstrate the accuracy of AthenaK using a set of standard tests in flat and curved spacetimes. Using a SANE accretion disk around a Kerr black hole, we compare the new solver to the existing solver for stationary spacetimes using the so-called "HARM-like" formulation. We find that both formulations converge to similar results. We also include the first published binary neutron star (BNS) mergers performed on graphical processing units (GPUs). Thanks to the FOFC scheme, our BNS mergers maintain a relative error of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-11})$ or better in baryon mass conservation up to collapse. Finally, we perform scaling tests of AthenaK on OLCF Frontier, where we show excellent weak scaling of $\geq 80\%$ efficiency up to 32768 GPUs and $74\%$ up to 65536 GPUs for a GRMHD problem in dynamical spacetimes with six levels of mesh refinement. AthenaK achieves an order-of-magnitude speedup using GPUs compared to CPUs, demonstrating that it is suitable for performing numerical relativity problems on modern exascale resources., Comment: 26 pages, 25 figures; to be submitted to ApJS soon

We present the numerical relativity module within AthenaK, an open source performance-portable astrophysics code designed for exascale computing applications. This module employs the Z4c formulation to solve the Einstein equations. We demonstrate its accuracy through a series of standard numerical relativity tests, including convergence of the gravitational waveform from binary black hole coalescence. Furthermore, we conduct scaling tests on OLCF Frontier and NERSC Perlmutter, where AthenaK exhibits excellent weak scaling efficiency of 80% on up to 65,536 AMD MI250X GPUs on Frontier (relative to 4 GPUs) and strong scaling efficiencies of 84% and 77% on AMD MI250X and NVIDIA A100 GPUs on Frontier and Perlmutter respectively. Additionally, we observe a significant performance boost, with two orders of magnitude speedup ($\gtrsim 200\times$) on a GPU compared to a single CPU core, affirming that AthenaK is well-suited for exascale computing, thereby expanding the potential for breakthroughs in numerical relativity research.

The detection of stellar variability often relies on the measurement of selected activity indicators such as coronal emission lines and non-thermal emissions. On the flip side, the effective stellar temperature is normally seen as one of the key fundamental parameters (with mass and radius) to understanding the basic physical nature of a star and its relation with its environment (e.g., planetary instellation). We present a novel approach for measuring disk-averaged temperature variations to sub-Kelvin accuracy inspired by algorithms developed for precision radial velocity. This framework uses the entire content of the spectrum, not just pre-identified lines, and can be applied to existing data obtained with high-resolution spectrographs. We demonstrate the framework by recovering the known rotation periods and temperature modulation of Barnard star and AU Mic in datasets obtained in the infrared with SPIRou at CHFT and at optical wavelengths on $\epsilon$ Eridani with HARPS at ESO 3.6-m telescope. We use observations of the transiting hot Jupiter HD189733\,b, obtained with SPIRou, to show that this method can unveil the minute temperature variation signature expected during the transit event, an effect analogous to the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect but in temperature space. This method is a powerful new tool for characterizing stellar activity, and in particular temperature and magnetic features at the surfaces of cool stars, affecting both precision radial velocity and transit spectroscopic observations. Topological semimetals are some of the topological phases of matter most intensely-studied experimentally. The Weyl semimetal phase, in particular, has garned tremendous, sustained interest given fascinating signatures such as the Fermi arc surface states and the chiral anomaly, as well as the minimal requirements to protect this three-dimensional topological phase. Here, we show that thin films of Weyl semimetals (which we call quasi-(3-1)-dimensional, or q(3-1)d) generically realize finite-size topological phases distinct from 3d and 2d topological phases of established classification schemes: response signatures of the 3d bulk topology co-exist with topologically-protected, quasi-(3-2)d Fermi arc states or chiral boundary modes due to a second, previously-unidentified bulk-boundary correspondence. We show these finite-size topological semimetal phases are realized by Hamiltonians capturing the Fermiology of few-layer Van der Waals material MoTe2 in experiment. We study the dependence of the physical and observable properties of the CGM on its halo mass. We analyse 22 simulations from the Auriga suite of high resolution cosmological `zoom-in' simulations at $z=0$ with halo masses $10^{10}~\text{M}_{\odot}\leq\text{M}_{\mathrm{200c}}\leq10^{12}~\text{M}_{\odot}$. We find a larger scatter in temperature and smaller scatter in metallicity in more massive haloes. The scatter of temperature and metallicity as a function of radius increases out to larger radii. The median and scatter of the volume-weighted density and mass-weighted radial velocity show no significant dependence on halo mass. Our results highlight that the CGM is more multiphase in haloes of higher mass. We additionally investigate column densities for HI and the metal ions CIV, OVI, MgII and SiII as a function of stellar mass and radius. We find the HI and metal ion column densities increase with stellar mass at sufficiently large radii ($R\gtrsim{0.2}$R$_{\mathrm{200c}}$). We find good agreement between our HI column densities and observations outside $20$% of the virial radius and overpredict within $20$%. MgII and SiII are similarly overpredicted within $20$% of the virial radius, but drop off steeply at larger radii. Our OVI column densities underpredict observations for stellar masses between $10^{9.7}~\text{M}_{\odot}\leq\text{M}_{\star}<10^{10.8}~\text{M}_{\odot}$ with reasonable agreement at $10^{10.8}~\text{M}_{\odot}$. CIV column densities agree with observational detections above a halo mass of $10^{9.7}~\text{M}_{\odot}$. We find that OVI (MgII) traces the highest (lowest) temperatures, and lowest (highest) density and metallicity. OVI and CIV are photo-ionized (collisionally ionized) at low (high) halo masses with a transition to higher temperatures at $10^{11}~\text{M}_{\odot}$. As part of our comprehensive, ongoing characterisation of the low-mass end of the main sequence in the Solar neighbourhood, we used the OSIRIS instrument at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias to acquire low- and mid-resolution (R$\approx$300 and R$\approx$2500) optical spectroscopy of 53 late-M and L ultracool dwarfs. Most of these objects are known but poorly investigated and lacking complete kinematics. We measured spectral indices, determined spectral types (six of which are new) and inferred effective temperature and surface gravity from BT-Settl synthetic spectra fits for all objects. We were able to measure radial velocities via line centre fitting and cross correlation for 46 objects, 29 of which lacked previous radial velocity measurements. Using these radial velocities in combination with the latest Gaia DR3 data, we also calculated Galactocentric space velocities. From their kinematics, we identified two candidates outside of the thin disc and four in young stellar kinematic groups. Two further ultracool dwarfs are apparently young field objects: 2MASSW J1246467$+$402715 (L4$\beta$), which has a potential, weak lithium absorption line, and G 196$-$3B (L3$\beta$), which was already known as young due to its well-studied primary companion., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

The sub-Jovian desert is a region in the mass-period and radius-period parameter space, typically encompassing short-period ranges between super-Earths and hot Jupiters, that exhibits an intrinsic dearth of planets. This scarcity is likely shaped by photoevaporation caused by the stellar irradiation received by giant planets that have migrated inward. We report the detection and characterization of TOI-3568 b, a transiting super-Neptune with a mass of $26.4\pm1.0$ M$_\oplus$, a radius of $5.30\pm0.27$ R$_\oplus$, a bulk density of $0.98\pm0.15$ g cm$^{-3}$, and an orbital period of 4.417965(5) d situated in the vicinity of the sub-Jovian desert. This planet orbiting a K dwarf star with solar metallicity, was identified photometrically by TESS. It was characterized as a planet by our high-precision radial velocity monitoring program using MAROON-X at Gemini North, supplemented by additional observations from the SPICE large program with SPIRou at CFHT. We performed a Bayesian MCMC joint analysis of the TESS and ground-based photometry, MAROON-X and SPIRou radial velocities, to measure the orbit, radius, and mass of the planet, as well as a detailed analysis of the high-resolution flux and polarimetric spectra to determine the physical parameters and elemental abundances of the host star. Our results reveal TOI-3568 b as a hot super-Neptune, rich in hydrogen and helium with a core of heavier elements with a mass between 10 and 25 M$_\oplus$. We analyzed the photoevaporation status of TOI-3568 b and found that it experiences one of the highest EUV luminosities among planets with a mass M$_{\rm p}$ $<2$ M$_{\rm Nep}$, yet it has an evaporation lifetime exceeding 5 Gyr. Positioned in the transition between two significant populations of exoplanets on the mass-period and energy diagrams, this planet presents an opportunity to test theories concerning the origin of the sub-Jovian desert., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on September 4, 2024

We explore properties of generalized Paley graphs and we extend a result of Lim and Praeger by providing a more precise description of the connected components of disconnected generalized Paley graphs. This result leads to a new characterization of when generalized Paley graphs are disconnected. We also provide necessary and sufficient divisibility conditions for the multiplicative group of the prime subfield of certain finite fields to be contained in the multiplicative subgroup of nonzero $k$-th powers. This latter result plays a crucial role in our development of a sorting algorithm on generalized Paley graphs that exploits the vector space structure of finite fields to partition certain subsets of vertices in a manner that decomposes the induced bipartite subgraph between them into complete balanced bipartite subgraphs. As a consequence, we establish a matching condition between these subsets of vertices that results in an explicit formula for the condensed Ricci curvature on certain Paley graphs and their generalizations.

Exploration is a key part of many video games. We investigate the using an exploratory agent to provide feedback on the design of procedurally generated game levels, 5 engaging levels and 5 unengaging levels. We expand upon a framework introduced in previous research which models motivations for exploration and introduce a fitness function for evaluating an environment's potential for exploration. Our study showed that our exploratory agent can clearly distinguish between engaging and unengaging levels. The findings suggest that our agent has the potential to serve as an effective tool for assessing procedurally generated levels, in terms of exploration. Hydrogen-rich superluminous supernovae (SLSNe II) are rare. The exact mechanism producing their extreme light curve peaks is not understood. Analysis of single events and small samples suggest that CSM interaction is the main responsible for their features. However, other mechanisms can not be discarded. Large sample analysis can provide clarification. We aim to characterize the light curves of a sample of 107 SLSNe II to provide valuable information that can be used to validate theoretical models. We analyze the gri light curves of SLSNe II obtained through ZTF. We study peak absolute magnitudes and characteristic timescales. When possible we compute g-r colors, pseudo-bolometric light curves, and estimate lower limits for their total radiated energy. We also study the luminosity distribution of our sample and estimate the percentage of them that would be observable by the LSST. Finally, we compare our sample to other H-rich SNe and to H-poor SLSNe I. SLSNe II are heterogeneous. Their median peak absolute magnitude is -20.3 mag in optical bands. Their rise can take from two weeks to over three months, and their decline from twenty days to over a year. We found no significant correlations between peak magnitude and timescales. SLSNe II tend to show fainter peaks, longer declines and redder colors than SLSNe I. We present the largest sample of SLSNe II light curves to date, comprising of 107 events. Their diversity could be explained by considering different CSM morphologies. Although, theoretical analysis is needed to explore alternative scenarios. Other luminous transients, such as Active Galactic Nuclei, Tidal Disruption Events or SNe Ia-CSM, can easily become contaminants. Thus, good multi-wavelength light curve coverage becomes paramount. We present an extensive contemporaneous X-ray and radio campaign performed on the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20220912A for eight weeks immediately following the source's detection by CHIME/FRB. This includes X-ray data from XMM-Newton, NICER, and Swift, and radio detections of FRB 20220912A from CHIME/Pulsar and Effelsberg. We detect no significant X-ray emission at the time of 30 radio bursts with upper limits on $0.5-10.0$ keV X-ray fluence of $(1.5-14.5)\times 10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (99.7% credible interval, unabsorbed) on a timescale of 100 ms. Translated into a fluence ratio $\eta_{\text{ x/r}} = F_{\text{X-ray}}/F_{\text{radio}}$, this corresponds to ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}} < 7\times10^{6}$. For persistent emission from the location of FRB 20220912A, we derive a 99.7% $0.5-10.0$ keV isotropic flux limit of $8.8\times 10^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (unabsorbed) or an isotropic luminosity limit of 1.4$\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at a distance of 362.4 Mpc. We derive a hierarchical extension to the standard Bayesian treatment of low-count and background-contaminated X-ray data, which allows the robust combination of multiple observations. This methodology allows us to place the best (lowest) 99.7% credible interval upper limit on an FRB ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}}$ to date, ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}} < 2\times10^6$, assuming that all thirty detected radio bursts are associated with X-ray bursts with the same fluence ratio. If we instead adopt an X-ray spectrum similar to the X-ray burst observed contemporaneously with FRB-like emission from Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 detected on 2020 April 28, we derive a 99.7% credible interval upper limit on ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}}$ of $8\times10^5$, which is only 3 times the observed value of ${\eta}_{\text{ x/r}}$ for SGR 1935+2154., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are intense, short-lived bursts of gamma-ray radiation observed up to a high redshift ($z \sim 10$) due to their luminosities. Thus, they can serve as cosmological tools to probe the early Universe. However, we need a large sample of high$-z$ GRBs, currently limited due to the difficulty in securing time at the large aperture Telescopes. Thus, it is painstaking to determine quickly whether a GRB is high$z$ or low$-z$, which hampers the possibility of performing rapid follow-up observations. Previous efforts to distinguish between high$-$ and low$-z$ GRBs using GRB properties and machine learning (ML) have resulted in limited sensitivity. In this study, we aim to improve this classification by employing an ensemble ML method on 251 GRBs with measured redshifts and plateaus observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Incorporating the plateau phase with the prompt emission, we have employed an ensemble of classification methods to enhance the sensitivity unprecedentedly. Additionally, we investigate the effectiveness of various classification methods using different redshift thresholds, $z_{threshold}$=$z_t$ at $z_{t}=$ 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5. We achieve a sensitivity of 87\% and 89\% with a balanced sampling for both $z_{t}=3.0$ and $z_{t}=3.5$, respectively, representing a 9\% and 11\% increase in the sensitivity over Random Forest used alone. Overall, the best results are at $z_{t} = 3.5$, where the difference between the sensitivity of the training set and the test set is the smallest. Recent Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of protoplanetary disks in the millimeter continuum have shown a variety of radial gaps, cavities, and spiral features. These substructures may be signposts for ongoing planet formation, and therefore these systems are promising targets for direct imaging planet searches in the near-infrared. To this end, we present results from a deep imaging survey in the $L'$-band (3.8 $\mu$m) with the Keck/NIRC2 vortex coronagraph to search for young planets in 43 disks with resolved features in the millimeter continuum or evidence for gaps/central cavities from their spectral energy distributions. Although we do not detect any new point sources, using the vortex coronagraph allows for high sensitivity to faint sources at small angular separations (down to ${\sim}$0$^{\prime\prime}$.1), allowing us to place strong upper limits on the masses of potential gas giant planets. We compare our mass sensitivities to the masses of planets derived using ALMA observations, and while we are sensitive to $\sim$1 M$_{Jup}$ planets in the gaps in some of our systems, we are generally not sensitive to planets of the masses expected from the ALMA observations. In addition to placing upper limits on the masses of gas giant planets that could be interacting with the dust in the disks to form the observed millimeter substructures, we are also able to map the micron-sized dust as seen in scattered light for 8 of these systems. The notion of polyptych lattices, introduced by Escobar, Harada, and Manon, wraps the data of a collection of lattices related by piecewise-linear bijections together into a single semi-algebraic object, equipped with its own notions of convexity and polyhedra. The main purpose of this manuscript is to construct an explicit family of polyptych lattices, and to illustrate via explicit computations the abstract theory introduced by Escobar-Harada-Manon. Specifically, we first construct a family of rank-$2$ polyptych lattices $\mathcal{M}_s$ with $2$ charts, compute their space of points, and prove that they are full and self-dual. We then give a concrete sample computation of a point-convex hull in $\mathcal{M}_s \otimes \mathbb{R}$ to illustrate that convex geometry in the polyptych lattice setting can exhibit phenomena not seen in the classical situation. We also give multiple examples of $2$-dimensional ``chart-Gorenstein-Fano'' polytopes, which give rise to pairs of mutation-related $2$-dimensional (classical) Gorenstein-Fano polytopes. Finally, we produce detropicalizations $(\mathcal{A}_s, \mathfrak{v}_s)$ of $\mathcal{M}_s$, and in the case $s=1$ where the detropicalization is a UFD, and with respect to a certain choice of PL polytope $\mathcal{P}$, we give an explicit generators-and-relations presentation of the (finitely generated) Cox ring of the compactification $X_{\mathcal{A}_s}(\mathcal{P})$ of $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{A}_s)$ with respect to $\mathcal{P}$., Comment: 25 pages. Freight truck electrification for last-mile delivery is one of the most important research topics to reduce the dependency on fossil fuel operations. Although a battery electric truck still has limitations on daily operations with lower driving ranges and higher purchasing cost than a conventional truck, operations with electrified trucks reduce total energy usage and driving noise on routes. In this paper, we propose a fleet-mix and multi-shift electric vehicle routing problem for joint implementation of fleet electrification and off-hour delivery in urban e-commerce delivery systems. Every electrified truck is assumed to have two shifts for both daytime and nighttime delivery operations while conventional trucks can operate during daytime only because of municipal restrictions on nighttime deliveries, which are related to engine noise. Also, every electrified truck must recharge between shifts at its depot. A fleet owner decides the best electrification ratio of the fleet and the proper number of chargers which gives the minimum total cost. The optimization problem is described as a mixed-integer linear programming model including common constraints for vehicle routing problem, recharging constraints, and two-shift operation of electrified trucks. A bi-level VNS-TS heuristic is also suggested for efficient solution search. The upper-level problem assigns trucks with engine type and brief route information using variable neighborhood search heuristic, and the lower-level problem finds the best route of each assigned truck using a tabu search heuristic. Scenarios with different EV driving ranges and nighttime operation availabilities are developed and evaluated with the POLARIS transportation simulation framework, and results are reported.

The current study was a retrospective mixed-methods quasi-experimental design (QED) study to determine the effects of Progress Learning on Grades 6-8 mathematics and ELA achievement by comparison growth on the Georgia Milestones Mathematics and ELA assessments of students who received Progress Learning services, in relation to students that did not receive Progress Learning. Supplementary analyses examining the associations between Progress Learning usage metrics and achievement gains are also performed in this study. The results of the main impact analyses showed a positive and statistically significant impact of Progress Learning on student mathematics achievement, with treatment students outgaining comparison students by more than 4 points. The results of the main ELA impact analysis showed a directionally positive, though not statistically significant, impact on ELA achievement, with treatment students outgaining comparison students by more than 3 points. Effect sizes of these analyses ranged between 0.06 to 0.09 SDs, indicating small, though practically meaningful, program impacts of Progress Learning on student achievement, especially in mathematics. Usage analyses showed significant positive associations between student-level Progress Learning usage metrics and achievement gains. Correlations between average Progress Learning activity scores and achievement gains were of particular note, with observed correlations of magnitude above .4 in ELA and above .6 in mathematics. This gives preliminary evidence supporting modest to moderate predictive validity of Progress Learning activity scores in relation to Georgia Milestones scores. These associations remained significant and positive when controlling for prior achievement and demographics, using HLMs similar to those used in the main impact analyses.

Discussions about college affordability often revolve around helping students pay their tuition and fees. But nontuition expenses, including food, housing, and other living expenses, make up a large portion of student budgets and contribute to increased student debt. These expenses can be a barrier to student enrollment and completion. Lack of information about the true full cost of attendance, stringent requirements to qualify for income support benefits, and limited grant aid make it hard for many students to access enough resources to cover their basic needs. In this report, we summarize our findings emerging from research and a convening we hosted on nontuition expenses. Currently, there is no standardized way to measure cost of attendance at institutions, making it difficult for students to compare nontuition costs across schools. Providing students personalized information about what their food, housing, and other living expenses may look like allows them to plan for the school year but is distinct from practical solutions for measuring student need for financial aid purposes. Doubling the Pell grant is a common suggestion when discussing the cost of education, and incorporating some level of basic living expenses, in addition to the costs of books and supplies, into estimates of adequate grant aid would be constructive. But increasing the Pell grant is insufficient, as using it explicitly to cover living expenses could lack political support and may lead to unintended consequences, such as tuition increases. Based on these findings, state and federal policymakers can do more to support students who cannot afford nontuition expenses through changes to federal, state, and institution-level policies. Both enabling students to have access to income support benefits and more generous grant aid are central to policy efforts for addressing financial barriers to student access and success. Increases in need-based financial aid from federal and state governments, as well as institutions, are important. But we should not view low-income students as entirely distinct from other low-income adults, and education policy alone cannot be responsible for meeting students' basic needs.

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of IXL Math in an elementary school context, using a randomized-control trial (RCT). This study examined mathematics achievement trajectories of 545 Grades 3-5 students across four elementary schools in a small Michigan school district during the 2022-23 school year. Teachers were randomly selected to use IXL Math (treatment condition) or business-as-usual instruction (control condition) for the winter and spring of the 2022-23 school year. Outcome variables included spring 2023 Renaissance Star mathematics scores (progress monitoring) and spring 2023 M-STEP mathematics scores (state test scores). Prior achievement variables included winter 2023 Renaissance Star mathematics scores and spring 2022 M-STEP mathematics scores. Treatment teachers were also administered a survey focusing on teacher experiences with and reactions to the IXL Math program. District-wide, nine of 11 treatment teachers volunteered to complete the survey. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) with students nested within teachers was used to complete the main impact analyses, while quantitative survey data were analyzed descriptively, and open-ended items were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the main impact analyses showed a significant positive impact of IXL Math on student mathematics achievement, with treatment students gaining approximately 10-points more on the Renaissance Star mathematics assessment than did control students. The effect size of this impact was 0.13 SDs, indicating a small-to-moderate practical impact of IXL Math on student mathematics achievement. Subgroup analyses showed that IXL Math had additional significant positive impacts on Hispanic, special education, ELL, and free and reduced meal (FARMS) students, with the magnitudes of these impacts ranging from 13-17 points. In addition, teacher perceptions of IXL Math were generally very positive, especially in relation to professional development and overall program perceptions. In all, the results of this study provide evidence supporting efficacy of IXL Math in improving student mathematics achievement, especially for student subgroups that historically had started at lower performance levels.

Rising college prices and student debt, the growth and collapse of online for-profit colleges, and expansions of federal grant, loan, and loan forgiveness policies have increased calls for more accountability in our higher education system. And there is significant consensus among lawmakers that the existing set of quality assurance policies for federal aid programs are not protecting students and taxpayers. But although these conditions have generated many proposals for policies to hold colleges accountable, none have won broad support among lawmakers. To help advance the reform debate, we review and compare recent proposed policies that address accountability and, drawing on interviews we conducted with former congressional staff members and higher education advocates, what factors have prevented policymakers from enacting reforms, and what conditions may be necessary to bring about policy changes. The report reveals that lawmakers, researchers, and advocates have put forth a wide range of reform proposals to strengthen quality assurance rules for federal aid programs. This variety implies that there is considerable disagreement over what reforms are needed and disagreement over the underlying problem. Some proposals focus on graduation rates, while others assess how colleges spend money. The most common approach among the proposals is to judge colleges on how their students fare in repaying their student loans, suggesting a possible place for consensus. The report also shows there are many political and design roadblocks to reform despite broad support for more accountability. The current political environment makes bipartisan policymaking difficult. Additionally, higher education is an open-access and diverse system of institutions, making policymakers reluctant to pass policies that might reduce access, particularly for low-income students and students from underrepresented ethnic and racial groups. Still, the individuals we interviewed all discussed several major design issues that will further frustrate reform efforts, such as whether students who do not receive federal aid should be included in the policies and whether some fields and institutions should be exempt. Regardless, many of the recent reform proposals illustrate the need to improve assurance for aid programs and should ultimately encourage lawmakers to work toward reforms that strengthen our higher education system and federal aid programs.

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Imagine Learning's MyPath program on student mathematics and reading achievement growth. This study examined achievement growth trajectories of kindergarten students in one suburban Midwestern district in the 2022-23 school year. NWEA MAP mathematics and reading scores served as the main outcome variables in quantitative impact analyses. As Imagine MyPath was used by all district kindergarten students, MAP mathematics and reading score growth of district kindergarten students was compared to that of matched comparison students obtained from a Similar Schools Report (SSR) provided to the district by NWEA. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to district teachers that used Imagine MyPath to examine teacher perceptions of the program. A statistically significant positive impact of Imagine MyPath on mathematics achievement was observed, with treatment students outgaining matched comparison students by more than 2 points. Treatment students also outgained matched comparison students in reading achievement, but this difference was minimal and not statistically significant. Teacher perceptions of Imagine MyPath were largely positive, especially regarding perceived program impacts on student learning. The results of this study provide preliminary evidence regarding the efficacy of Imagine MyPath in relation to mathematics achievement. It is important to note that results from this study are derived from data in one unique district in which all students used the program. Future research may focus on contexts where some students are using Imagine MyPath while other students are participating in business-as-usual instruction.

We present the ab initio supported discovery of two new Pu based intermetallic compounds, PuNiSn and PuPtSn. Using density functional theory, the formation energies within the relevant ternary phase diagrams were calculated to predict the stability of both compounds. Simultaneously, Pu-Ni-Sn and Pu-Pt-Sn materials were arc-melted and subsequently characterized with magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity measurements from 2-300 K. Magnetization measurements show that PuNiSn and PuPtSn order antiferromagnetically at TN = 11 K and TN = 15 K, respectively. Specific heat measurements show an enhanced residual electronic specific heat that is indicative of strong electron correlations. Resistivity measurements are indicative of Kondo behavior for PuNiSn while crystal field effects may play a role in the observed temperature dependence for PuPtSn.

We have carried out spatially resolved thermal/nonthermal separation on two edge-on galaxies, NGC~3044 and NGC~5775, using only radio data. Narrow-band imaging within a frequency band that is almost contiguous from 1.25 to 7.02 GHz (L-band, S-band and C-band) has allowed us to fit spectra and construct thermal, nonthermal, and nonthermal spectral index maps. This method does not require any ancillary H$\alpha$ and infrared data, or reliance on dust corrections that are challenging in edge-on galaxies. For NGC~3044, at 15 arcsec resolution, we find a median thermal fraction of $\sim\, 13$\% with an estimated uncertainty in this fraction of $\sim\, 50$\% at 4.13 GHz. This compares well with the H$\alpha$ mixture method results. We uncovered evidence for a vertical outflow feature reaching at least $z\,\sim\,3.5$ kpc in projection above the plane, reminiscent of M82's starburst wind. For the higher SFR galaxy, NGC~5775 at 12 arcsec resolution, we find a median thermal fraction of 44\% at 4.13 GHz with an estimated error on this fraction of 17\%. Both galaxies show a change of slope (flattening) in L-band. These results suggest that a radio-only method for separating thermal from nonthermal emission is not only feasible, but able to reveal new features that might otherwise be obscured in edge-on disks., Comment: Accepted to AJ on July 18, 2024

Modelling and characterizing emergent behaviour within a swarm can pose significant challenges in terms of 'assurance'. Assurance tasks encompass adherence to standards, certification processes, and the execution of verification and validation (V&V) methods, such as model checking. In this study, we propose a holistic, multi-level modelling approach for formally verifying and validating autonomous robotic swarms, which are defined at the macroscopic formal modelling, low-fidelity simulation, high-fidelity simulation, and real-robot levels. Our formal macroscopic models, used for verification, are characterized by data derived from actual simulations, ensuring both accuracy and traceability across different system models. Furthermore, our work combines formal verification with experimental validation involving real robots. In this way, our corroborative approach for V&V seeks to enhance confidence in the evidence, in contrast to employing these methods separately. Effective frequency control in power grids has become increasingly important with the increasing demand for renewable energy sources. Here, we propose a novel strategy for resolving this challenge using graph convolutional proximal policy optimization (GC-PPO). The GC-PPO method can optimally determine how much power individual buses dispatch to reduce frequency fluctuations across a power grid. We demonstrate its efficacy in controlling disturbances by applying the GC-PPO to the power grid of the UK. The performance of GC-PPO is outstanding compared to the classical methods. This result highlights the promising role of GC-PPO in enhancing the stability and reliability of power systems by switching lines or decentralizing grid topology., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The projection pursuit (PP) guided tour interactively optimises a criteria function known as the PP index, to explore high-dimensional data by revealing interesting projections. The optimisation in PP can be non-trivial, involving non-smooth functions and optima with a small squint angle, detectable only from close proximity. To address these challenges, this study investigates the performance of a recently introduced swarm-based algorithm, Jellyfish Search Optimiser (JSO), for optimising PP indexes. The performance of JSO for visualising data is evaluated across various hyper-parameter settings and compared with existing optimisers. Additionally, this work proposes novel methods to quantify two properties of the PP index, smoothness and squintability that capture the complexities inherent in PP optimisation problems. These two metrics are evaluated along with JSO hyper-parameters to determine their effects on JSO success rate. Our numerical results confirm the positive impact of these metrics on the JSO success rate, with squintability being the most significant. The JSO algorithm has been implemented in the tourr package and functions to calculate smoothness and squintability are available in the ferrn package.

(2060) Chiron is a large centaur that has been reported active on multiple occasions including during aphelion passage. Studies of Chirons coma during active periods have resulted in the detection of C(triple)N and CO outgassing. Significant work remains to be undertaken to comprehend the activation mechanisms on Chiron and the parent molecules of the gas phases detected. This work reports the study of the ices on Chirons surface and coma and seeks spectral indicators of volatiles associated with the activity. Additionally, we discuss how these detections could be related to the activation mechanism for Chiron and, potentially, other centaurs. In July 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observed Chiron when it was active near its aphelion. We present JWST/NIRSpec spectra from 0.97 to 5.27 microns with a resolving power of 1000, and compare them with laboratory data for identification of the spectral bands. We report the first detections on Chiron of absorption bands of several volatile ices, including CO2, CO, C2H6, C3H8, and C2H2. We also confirm the presence of water ice in its amorphous state. A key discovery arising from these data is the detection of fluorescence emissions of CH4, revealing the presence of a gas coma rich in this hyper-volatile molecule, which we also identify to be in non-local thermal equilibrium (nonLTE). CO2 gas emission is also detected in the fundamental stretching band at 4.27 microns. We argue that the presence of CH4 emission is the first proof of the desorption of CH4 due to a density phase transition of amorphous water ice at low temperature in agreement with the estimated temperature of Chiron during the JWST observations (61 K). Detection of photolytic and proton irradiation products of CH4 and CO2 on the surface, in the coma ice grains, or in the ring material is also detected via a forest of absorption features from 3.5 to 5.3 microns., Comment: 4 figures in paper plus 2 more in the appendix. Neutron stars and white dwarfs are both dense remnants of post-main-sequence stars. Pulsars, magnetars and strongly magnetised white dwarfs have all been seen to been observed to exhibit coherent, pulsed radio emission in relation to their rotational period. Recently, a new type of radio long period transient (LPT) has been discovered. The bright radio emission of LPTs resembles that of radio pulsars and magnetars. However, they pulse on timescales (minutes) much longer than previously seen. While minute timescales are common rotation periods for white dwarfs, LPTs are much brighter than the known pulsating white dwarfs, and dipolar radiation from isolated (as opposed to binary) magnetic white dwarfs has yet to be observed. Here, we report the discovery of a new $\sim$421~s LPT, CHIME J0630+25, using the CHIME/FRB and CHIME/Pulsar instruments. We used standard pulsar timing techniques and obtained a phase-coherent timing solution which yielded limits on the inferred magnetic field and characteristic age. CHIME J0630+25 is remarkably nearby ($170 \pm 80$~pc), making it the closest LPT discovered to date., Comment: Submitted

A central goal of both knowledge tracing and traditional assessment is to quantify student knowledge and skills at a given point in time. Deep knowledge tracing flexibly considers a student's response history but does not quantify epistemic uncertainty, while IRT and CDM compute measurement error but only consider responses to individual tests in isolation from a student's past responses. Elo and BKT could bridge this divide, but the simplicity of the underlying models limits information sharing across skills and imposes strong inductive biases. To overcome these limitations, we introduce Dynamic LENS, a modeling paradigm that combines the flexible uncertainty-preserving properties of variational autoencoders with the principled information integration of Bayesian state-space models. Dynamic LENS allows information from student responses to be collected across time, while treating responses from the same test as exchangeable observations generated by a shared latent state. It represents student knowledge as Gaussian distributions in high-dimensional space and combines estimates both within tests and across time using Bayesian updating. We show that Dynamic LENS has similar predictive performance to competing models, while preserving the epistemic uncertainty - the deep learning analogue to measurement error - that DKT models lack. Misinformation about climate change causes numerous negative impacts, necessitating corrective responses. Psychological research has offered various strategies for reducing the influence of climate misinformation, such as the fact-myth-fallacy-fact-structure. However, practically implementing corrective interventions at scale represents a challenge. Automatic detection and correction of misinformation offers a solution to the misinformation problem. This study documents the development of large language models that accept as input a climate myth and produce a debunking that adheres to the fact-myth-fallacy-fact (``truth sandwich'') structure, by incorporating contrarian claim classification and fallacy detection into an LLM prompting framework. We combine open (Mixtral, Palm2) and proprietary (GPT-4) LLMs with prompting strategies of varying complexity. Experiments reveal promising performance of GPT-4 and Mixtral if combined with structured prompts. We identify specific challenges of debunking generation and human evaluation, and map out avenues for future work. Evaluating heterogeneity of treatment effects (HTE) across subgroups is common in both randomized trials and observational studies. Although several statistical challenges of HTE analyses including low statistical power and multiple comparisons are widely acknowledged, issues arising for clustered data, including cluster randomized trials (CRTs), have received less attention. Notably, the potential for model misspecification is increased given the complex clustering structure (e.g., due to correlation among individuals within a subgroup and cluster), which could impact inference and type 1 errors. To illicit this issue, we conducted a simulation study to evaluate the performance of common analytic approaches for testing the presence of HTE for continuous, binary, and count outcomes: generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) and generalized estimating equations (GEE) including interaction terms between treatment group and subgroup. We found that standard GLMM analyses that assume a common correlation of participants within clusters can lead to severely elevated type 1 error rates of up to 47.2% compared to the 5% nominal level if the within-cluster correlation varies across subgroups. A flexible GLMM, which allows subgroup-specific within-cluster correlations, achieved the nominal type 1 error rate, as did GEE (though rates were slightly elevated even with as many as 50 clusters). Applying the methods to a real-world CRT using the count outcome utilization of healthcare, we found a large impact of the model specification on inference: the standard GLMM yielded highly significant interaction by sex (P=0.01), whereas the interaction was non-statistically significant under the flexible GLMM and GEE (P=0.64 and 0.93, respectively). We recommend that HTE analyses using GLMM account for within-subgroup correlation to avoid anti-conservative inference.

In this short letter, I present a powerful application in dimensionality reduction of the lesser-used Jacobi-Davidson algorithm for the generalized eigenvalue decomposition. When combined with matrix-free implementations of relevant operators, this technique allows for the computation of the dynamics of an arbitrary quantum state to be done in $\mathcal{O}(n)$ time, where $n$ is the size of the original Hilbert space.

Inspired by the ancient spiral constructed by the greek philosopher Theodorus which is based on concatenated right triangles, we have created a spiral. In this spiral, called \emph{Fibonacci--Theodorus}, the sides of the triangles have lengths corresponding to Fibonacci numbers. Towards the end of the paper, we present a generalized method applicable to second-order recurrence relations. Our exploration of the Fibonacci--Theodorus spiral aims to address a variety of questions, showcasing its unique properties and behaviors. For example, we study topics such as area, perimeter, and angles. Notably, we establish a relationship between the ratio of two consecutive areas and the golden ratio, a pattern that extends to angles sharing a common vertex. Furthermore, we present some asymptotic results. For instance, we demonstrate that the sum of the first $n$ areas comprising the spiral approaches a multiple of the sum of the initial $n$ Fibonacci numbers. Moreover, we provide a sequence of open problems related to all spiral worked in this paper. Finally, in his work Hahn, Hahn observed a potential connection between the golden ratio and the ratio of areas between spines of lengths $\sqrt{F_{n+1}}$ and $\sqrt{F_{n+2}-1}$ and the areas between spines of lengths $\sqrt{F_{n}}$ and $\sqrt{F_{n+1}-1}$ in the Theodorus spiral.
