2. Beyond a single temperature threshold: Applying a cumulative thermal stress framework to plant heat tolerance

Abstract

AbstractMost plant thermal tolerance studies focus on single critical thresholds, which limit the capacity to generalise across studies and predict heat stress under natural conditions. In animals and microbes, thermal tolerance landscapes describe the more realistic, cumulative effects of temperature. We tested this in plants by measuring the decline in leaf photosynthetic efficiency (FV/FM) following a combination of temperatures and exposure times and then modelled these physiological indices alongside recorded environmental temperatures. We demonstrate that a general relationship between stressful temperatures and exposure durations can be effectively employed to quantify and compare heat tolerance within and across plant species and over time. Importantly, we show how FV/FM curves translate to plants under natural conditions, suggesting that environmental temperatures often impair photosynthetic function. Our findings provide more robust descriptors of heat tolerance in plants and suggest that heat tolerance in disparate groups of organisms can be studied with a single predictive framework.

3. Acclimation of thermal tolerance in juvenile plants from three biomes is suppressed when extremes co-occur

Abstract

Abstract Given the rising frequency of thermal extremes (heatwaves and cold snaps) due to climate change, comprehending how a plant’s origin affects its thermal tolerance breadth (TTB) becomes vital. We studied juvenile plants from three biomes: temperate coastal rainforest, desert and alpine. In controlled settings, plants underwent hot days and cold nights in a factorial design to examine thermal tolerance acclimation. We assessed thermal thresholds (Tcrit-hot and Tcrit-cold) and TTB. We hypothesized that (i) desert species would show the highest heat tolerance, alpine species the greatest cold tolerance and temperate species intermediate tolerance; (ii) all species would increase heat tolerance after hot days and cold tolerance after cold nights; (iii) combined exposure would broaden TTB more than individual conditions, especially in desert and alpine species. We found that biome responses were minor compared to the responses to the extreme temperature treatments. All plants increased thermal tolerance in response to hot 40°C days (Tcrit-hot increased by ~3.5°C), but there was minimal change in Tcrit-cold in response to the cold −2°C nights. In contrast, when exposed to both hot days and cold nights, on average, plants exhibited an antagonistic response in TTB, where cold tolerance decreased and heat tolerance was reduced, and so we did not see the bi-directional expansion we hypothesized. There was, however, considerable variation among species in these responses. As climate change intensifies, plant communities, especially in transitional seasons, will regularly face such temperature swings. Our results shed light on potential plant responses under these extremes, emphasizing the need for deeper species-specific thermal acclimation insights, ultimately guiding conservation efforts.

Abstract

Understanding plant thermal tolerance is fundamental to predicting impacts of extreme temperature events that are increasing in frequency and intensity across the globe. Extremes, not averages, drive species evolution, determine survival, and increased crop performance. To better prioritise agricultural and natural system research, it is crucial to evaluate how researchers are assessing the capacity of plants to tolerate extreme events. We conducted a systematic review to determine how plant thermal tolerance research is distributed across wild and domesticated plants, growth forms and biomes, and identify crucial knowledge gaps. Our review shows that most thermal tolerance research examines cold tolerance of cultivated species; ~5% of articles consider both heat and cold tolerance. Plants of extreme environments are understudied, and techniques widely applied in cultivated systems are largely unused in natural systems. Lastly, we find that lack of standardised methods and metrics compromises the potential for mechanistic insight. Our review provides an entry point for those new to the methods used in plant thermal tolerance research and bridges often disparate ecological and agricultural perspectives for the more experienced. We present a considered agenda of thermal tolerance research priorities to stimulate efficient, reliable, and repeatable research across the spectrum of plant thermal tolerance.

7. Shoot growth of woody trees and shrubs is predicted by maximum plant height and associated traits

© 2017 The Authors. Functional Ecology © 2017 British Ecological Society The rate of elongation and thickening of individual branches (shoots) varies across plant species. This variation is important for the outcome of competition and other plant–plant interactions. Here, we compared rates of shoot growth across 44 species from tropical, warm temperate and cool temperate forests of eastern Australia. Shoot growth rate was found to correlate with a suite of traits including the potential height of the species, xylem-specific conductivity, leaf size, leaf area per xylem cross-section (LA/XA), twig diameter (at 40 cm length), wood density and modulus of elasticity. Abstract

A search is made for the highly-suppressed B meson decays B+ -> K+K+pi(-) and B+ -> pi(+)pi K-+(-) using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. No evidence is found for the decays, and upper limits at 90% confidence level are determined to be B(B+ -> K+K+pi(-))<1.1 x 10(-8) and B(B+ -> pi(+)pi K-+(-)) <4.6 x 10(-8). (C) 2016 The Author. Abstract

The decays B+-> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-) and B+ -> psi(2S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) are observed for the first time using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), collected by the LHCb experiment in proton- proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The branching fractions relative to that of B+ -> psi(2S)K+ are measured to beB(B+-> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-))/B(B+ -> psi (2S)K+) = (1.88 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.09)x10(-2).B(B+ -> psi(2S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-))/B(B+ -> psi (2S)K+) = (3.04 +/- 0.50 +/- 0.26)X10(-2)where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

11. Weak coordination among petiole, leaf, vein, and gas-exchange traits across Australian angiosperm species and its possible implications.

Abstract

Close coordination between leaf gas exchange and maximal hydraulic supply has been reported across diverse plant life forms. However, it has also been suggested that this relationship may become weak or break down completely within the angiosperms. We examined coordination between hydraulic, leaf vein, and gas-exchange traits across a diverse group of 35 evergreen Australian angiosperms, spanning a large range in leaf structure and habitat. Leaf-specific conductance was calculated from petiole vessel anatomy and was also measured directly using the rehydration technique. Leaf vein density (thought to be a determinant of gas exchange rate), maximal stomatal conductance, and net CO 2 assimilation rate were also measured for most species (n = 19-35). Vein density was not correlated with leaf-specific conductance (either calculated or measured), stomatal conductance, nor maximal net CO 2 assimilation, with r (2) values ranging from 0.00 to 0.11, P values from 0.909 to 0.102, and n values from 19 to 35 in all cases. Leaf-specific conductance calculated from petiole anatomy was weakly correlated with maximal stomatal conductance (r (2) = 0.16; P = 0.022; n = 32), whereas the direct measurement of leaf-specific conductance was weakly correlated with net maximal CO 2 assimilation (r (2) = 0.21; P = 0.005; n = 35). Calculated leaf-specific conductance, xylem ultrastructure, and leaf vein density do not appear to be reliable proxy traits for assessing differences in rates of gas exchange or growth across diverse sets of evergreen angiosperms.

Abstract

Purpose This study was initiated to investigate the role of different therapeutic modalities in the outcome of the surgical treatment of pterygium. Methods The results of treatment of pterygia with a variety of surgical techniques were studied in 56 eyes (49 patients) operated on at Bristol Eye Hospital during a period of five years. The surgical techniques included simple excision; bare sclera; conjunctival autograft; sliding conjunctival flap; lamellar keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty. Twelve eyes received additional beta irradiation in a fractionated total dose of 40 Gys. Results The incidence of recurrence was 23.2% for the 43 treated primary pterygia, and 23% for the 13 recurrent pterygia. All recurrences occurred between 2.5 and 11 months postoperatively. None of the 11 cases where additional beta irradiation was used showed any recurrence or other complication within the study period. In the recurrent pterygia group, the cases treated with a combination of surgical excision and beta irradiation, showed significantly lower recurrence rate (pConclusions Beta irradiation as a complement to surgical treatment of pterygium, is successful in treating high risk cases such as reoperations, whereas for the majority of primary pterygia surgical excision alone is adequate. Additionally, follow up of one year will reveal any recurrences.

Abstract

There have been evolutionary changes in the management of pathological conditions of the hepatobiliary system over recent years, particularly with an increasing emphasis on modern hepatobiliary surgical techniques. Concurrent advances have occurred in imaging technology and availability, leading to a greater use of ultrasound, multidetector computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the primary evaluation of hepatobiliary disease. Radionuclide imaging using technetium(99m) (Tc(99m)) hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) derivatives is an established technique that complements morphological imaging, providing valuable functional information in both pre- and postoperative evaluation of patients with suspected or known hepatobiliary disease. This review discusses the current clinical indications for Tc(99m) HIDA scintigraphy using clinical cases to demonstrate how this technique continues to play a valuable diagnostic role in the assessment of the functional integrity of the hepatobiliary system. Cerebral edema is a significant cause of elevated intracranial pressure and a consequence of secondary injury following traumatic brain injury. The use of hyperosmolar agents has been theorized to reduce intracranial pressure through osmotic effects on the water content of the injured brain. The most commonly used agents for this purpose are mannitol and hypertonic saline. While these agents have demonstrated efficacy, prospective, randomized clinical data are somewhat limited. Abstract

Elevations in intracranial pressure often occur after traumatic brain injury. A limited array of medications is available for the treatment of intracranial hypertension. Metabolic suppression agents may be used in this situation to suppress electrical activity in the brain, diminish the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption, and, as a consequence, decrease cerebral blood volume and intracranial pressure. Propofol and pentobarbital have unique characteristics that make each desirable, yet difficult to use in the setting of traumatic brain injury. 41. Measuring target acquisition utilizing Madentec's Tracker system in individuals with cerebral palsy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact on performance of repeated trials of the Tracker system in a series of target acquisition tasks for persons with cerebral palsy (CP). Twelve persons with CP participated in the single case experimental study. Data were collected on their time to target, time to select, and distance moved to targets of increasingly smaller size across four, once weekly sessions of one hour length. Time and distance were measured using the software programs Speaking Dynamically Pro and Mouse Offroad. Nine of the 12 participants were able to achieve a smaller target at the end of the session compared to the initial target size of 2.5 inches square. Results across sessions for targets of the same size indicated that six participants reduced their times to target and seven reduced the distance moved to acquire the target. However, only two participants showed a decrease in their time to select scores. The findings are discussed in terms of the application of the Tracker One system for individuals with CP. Abstract

The stoichiometric relations between mercuric chloride and the sulphydryl antagonists have been examined. In liquid cultures, cysteine, glutathione, dimercaprol and thioglycollate are effective as inactivators of mercuric chloride in quantities close to the theoretical amounts. When used to revive mercuric chloride-treated cells, larger amounts are needed, and horse serum is ineffective. The results obtained with E. coli I suggest it is not so resistant to the action of mercuric chloride over long periods as are Gram-positive organisms. Cells treated with mercuric chloride in the presence of a nutrient medium derive some protection from the constituents of the medium. Qualitative experiments show dimercaprol to be the most efficient antagonist and thioglycollate the least.
