Prescribed fire is increasingly utilized for conservation and restoration goals, yet there is limited empirical evidence supporting its effectiveness in reducing wildfire-induced damages to highly valued resources and assets (HVRAs)—whether natural, cultural, or economic. This study evaluates the efficacy of prescribed fire in reducing wildfire severity to LANDFIRE-defined vegetation classes and HVRAs impacted by the 2017 West Mims event, which burned across both prescribed-fire treated and untreated areas within the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Wildfire severity was quantified using the differenced normalized burn ratio (dNBR) index, while treatment records were used to calculate the prescribed frequency and post-treatment duration, which is defined as the time elapsed between the last treatment and the West Mims event. A generalized additive model (GAM) was fit to model dNBR as a function of post-treatment duration, fire frequency, and vegetation type. Although dNBR exhibited considerable heterogeneity both within and between HVRAs and vegetation classes, areas treated with prescribed fire demonstrated substantial reductions in burn severity. The beneficial effects of prescribed fire were most pronounced within approximately two years post-treatment with up to an 88% reduction in mean wildfire severity. However, reductions remained evident for approximately five years post-treatment according to our model. The mitigating effect of prescribed fire was most pronounced in Introduced Upland Vegetation-Shrub, Eastern Floodplain Forests, and Longleaf Pine Woodland when the post-treatment duration was within 12 months. Similar trends were observed in areas surrounding red-cockaded woodpecker nesting sites, which is an HVRA of significant ecological importance. Our findings support the frequent application of prescribed fire (e.g., one- to two-year intervals) as an effective strategy for mitigating wildfire severity to HVRAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fire is an essential tool enabling tropical subsistence agriculture, but can result in escaped fires when not adequately controlled. We employed agricultural calendars, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews with over 60 farmers over four months of fieldwork to evaluate how agricultural burning is currently conducted in the Peruvian Andes. We found that Quechua farmers use fire for clearing agricultural residue, controlling weeds and shrubs, and preparing new or fallow parcels, with most burns set during the dry season. Quechua farmers employ control burning techniques that reflect an understanding of how fire behavior is influenced by fuel, topography, and weather conditions, a knowledge that aligns closely with Western use of prescribed and controlled burns. We also observed a high incidence of escaped fires, although most were controlled within an hour, and very few required community-wide intervention to extinguish. Our findings have significant policy implications for the safe and effective use of fire in rural agricultural landscapes. Rather than solely impose fire suppression, governments could facilitate access to modern wildfire risk indices and provide technical assistance for controlled burns, compatible with farmers' existing knowledge of factors influencing fire behavior. The Cheadle Center at UCSB manages more than 340 acres of open space between Ellwood Mesa and Goleta Slough, carrying out ecological restoration, research, and education projects at these sites. Characterized by a rich complex of oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, grassland, and wetland ecosystems, the area is known for its relatively high level of biodiversity. The Cheadle Center’s project sites and management areas serve to protect and strengthen the region’s ecology and ecosystems through habitat conservation, upland restoration, wetland creation and enhancement, and the implementation of sustainable stormwater management solutions. Through careful integration with local watersheds and surrounding natural areas, The Cheadle Center's management areas provide an important corridor and refuge for wildlife, ensure the long term preservation of the region's natural resources, and serve as outdoor classrooms, research sites, and recreational areas for the campus community and the public. The UCSB Restoration Register is a bimonthly newsletter released by the Cheadle Center that provides ecological restoration updates, a feature story, and community photos taken at management areas. This archived version of the May 2023 newsletter includes updates on a screening of the documentary Bringing Back Our Wetland and water level and salinity fluctuations in Devereux Slough. The feature story focuses on controlled burning and wildflower seeding on Lagoon Island to convert nonnative grassland to native coastal sage scrub. Fire is a vital management tool for maintaining prairie ecosystems. Prescribed burns control invasive species, regulate succession, stimulate plant growth, and are a cheap and effective method for removing excess biomass; however, fire can also inadvertently cause wildlife mortality, placing land managers in a challenging situation. Turtles are especially at risk of mortality from fire because of their low mobility and population sensitivity to reductions in adult survival. We studied ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata) at 3 sites in Illinois, USA, from 2019–2022 to determine the best predictors of above‐ground activity so land managers can conduct prescribed burns when turtles are underground. We used turtle shell temperature, air temperature, soil temperature, and precipitation data to develop a predictive model of above‐ground activity. The best model for predicting above‐ground activity included an interaction between day of year and current air temperature. Earlier in spring and later in fall, above‐ground activity is more likely at higher air temperatures compared to later in spring and earlier in fall when the same likelihood of above‐ground activity is predicted at lower air temperatures. In spring, we recommend burning in Illinois ornate box turtle habitat before 1 April when air temperature is <10°C and in fall after 1 November when air temperature is <15°C. Above these temperature thresholds, there is a >5% likelihood that turtles in northern populations are above ground. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In sparsely populated remote regions where freshly ignited fires can propagate unimpeded, the need for distributed fire detection capabilities has become increasingly urgent. In this work, we evaluate the potential of a multitude of different sensing modalities for integration into a distributed downwind fire detection system, something which does not exist today. We deployed custom sensor-rich data logging units over a multi-day-controlled burn event hosted by the Marin County Fire Department in Marin County, CA. Under the experimental conditions, nearly all sensing modalities exhibited signature behaviors of a nearby active fire, but with varying degrees of sensitivity. We present promising preliminary findings from these field tests but also note that future work is needed to assess more prosaic concerns. Larger scale trials will be needed to determine the practicality of specific sensing modalities in outdoor settings, and additional environmental data and testing will be needed to determine the sensor system lifetime, data delivery performance, and other technical considerations. Low-intensity burnings could be an effective silvicultural tool to prevent the occurrence and severity of wildfires. Nevertheless, their use as a forest fuel reduction tool may have a negative impact on soil properties. The aim of this investigation was to study the impact of a low-intensity prescribed fire on the main chemical properties of the soil (pH, electrical conductivity, and total organic carbon), and the diversity and composition of the soil bacterial communities in a semi-arid forest in SE Spain. Two similar stands were treated with a low-intensity prescribed burn in spring and autumn 2018 and were compared to an unburned stand. All soil samples were collected at the same time (autumn 2018). The chemical properties of the soil showed no significant differences between the prescribed burns and the control forest. Shannon and Pielou's diversity indices presented values significantly lower in the burned soils compared to the control. Prescribed burning did not modify soil bacterial community structure at the phylum level, but NMDS analysis did reveal a difference between soil bacterial communities at the genus level. Both prescribed burnings favoured some bacterial taxa over others, suggesting different thermal and bacterial resistance. The presence of Massilia, Pseudomonas and Arthrobacter could suggest a short-term ecosystem recovery. Prescribed burning, the carefully planned and directed use of fire to achieve land management goals, is a useful tool for natural resource managers in Florida. Landowners may choose fire to achieve a variety of objectives, including restoring fire-dependent ecosystems, enhancing forage for cattle, improving wildlife habitat, preparing sites for reforestation, and reducing hazardous fuel loads. Prescribed burns achieve many benefits for the environment and for people, but they have the potential to impact the public via smoke. Smoke production is simply unavoidable with prescribed burning, but its potential to harm can be reduced with the use of smoke management techniques. Intended for land managers and the public, this document provides some background information on air quality, the effects of smoke on human health and safety, and some strategies that can be used to protect air quality.

Hurricanes and tropical storms can significantly alter forested and non-forested areas, creating unique hazards and considerations for wildland firefighters and prescribed burners. Prior to responding to wildfires and planning prescribed fires, fire managers should anticipate how these changes will affect fire behavior, smoke, hazards, and access to the fire.

Prescribed fires are widely used for oak (Quercus) regeneration in hardwood forests, but the reported effects on terrestrial salamanders are variable, with some authors describing little to no effect of prescribed fire on salamanders and others reporting negative results. Factors such as variable fire intensity, sampling methodology, and imperfect salamander detection, which vary by study, may influence the effects of prescribed fires on salamanders. We examined the response of red-backed (Plethodon cinereus) and zig-zag (Plethodon dorsalis) salamanders to prescribed fire in forests of the Midwest U.S., accounting for changes in salamander behavior and detection by accounting for capture probability, and considering the influence of local fire intensity. We also explored the effects of fire on environmental variables (leaf litter depth, soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil pH) to identify possible mechanisms driving fire's influence on salamanders. From spring 2019 through fall 2022, a total of 4922 salamander captures were recorded, representing 1939 individually marked salamanders at six coverboard grids in southern Indiana. Occurrence of fire affected survival and temporary emigration of salamanders, likely indicating that salamanders retreated underground, on two of the four grids. Fire occurrence and intensity did not significantly affect environmental variables except for leaf litter depth, which was negatively affected. However, soil moisture had a stronger influence on salamander capture probability than leaf litter. Overall, effects of prescribed fires on salamander populations in this study were inconsistent. In contrast, environmental factors had strong impacts on salamanders, but themselves exhibited either no relationship or a short-term relationship to prescribed fire variables. Notably, large salamander populations may be better able to tolerate prescribed fires. Such populations will be important to support during prescribed fire management to protect the species, especially as the effects of repeated prescribed fires and compounding effects are unknown. Understanding the interplay between forest management practices and wildlife habitat features such as soil moisture and leaf litter will be critical to identifying best practices for supporting wildlife populations reliant on such features during prescribed fires. • Of three prescribed fires in southern Indiana, only two affected salamander populations. • Prescribed fire effects on salamanders were variable, overshadowed by environmental factors. • Large salamander populations may better tolerate prescribed fires. • Supporting salamander populations during prescribed fires is important for forest management. Litter from pine trees in open woodlands is an important fuel for surface fires, but litter from hardwood species may quell fire behavior. Lower intensity fires favor hardwood over longleaf pine regeneration, and while overstory hardwoods are important sources of food and shelter for many wildlife species, too many could result in canopy closure and a loss of ground layer diversity. Although some researchers have found synergies in fire effects when leaves of different species are combined, field tests of effects of tree guild diversity on fire behavior are lacking from the literature. We used neighborhood modeling to understand how diverse overstory trees in longleaf pine forests affect fire radiative energy density (FRED), and to determine the effect on top-kill of shrub-form hardwood trees. We measured the effects of three guilds of overstory trees (longleaf pine, upland oaks, and mesic oaks) on FRED, and related FRED to post-fire damage in four guilds of understory hardwoods (sandhill oaks, upland oaks, mesic oaks, and fleshy-fruited hardwoods). We found that FRED increased 33–56% near overstory longleaf pine but decreased 23–37% near overstory mesic oaks. Additive models of FRED performed well and no synergies or antagonisms were present. Seventy percent of stems of understory hardwoods survived fire with energy release typical of dormant-season fires in canopy gaps and near overstory mesic oaks. We also found that among understory trees >2 m tall, upland and sandhill oaks were more likely than mesic oaks or fleshy-fruited hardwoods to avoid top-kill. We conclude that neighborhood models provide a method to predict longleaf pine forest structure and composition that allows for the ecological benefits of overstory hardwoods while maintaining ground-layer diversity. To maintain hardwood control, fire practitioners may need to select fire weather conditions to increase fire behavior especially during dormant-season burns.

Abstract Background While the effects of prescribed burning on tree regeneration and on pyrophilous and/or saproxylic species are relatively well known, effects on other organisms are less clear. The primary aim of this systematic review was to clarify how biodiversity is affected by prescribed burning in temperate and boreal forests, and whether burning may be useful as a means of conserving or restoring biodiversity, beyond that of pyrophilous and saproxylic species. Methods The review examined primary field studies of the effects of prescribed burning on biodiversity in boreal and temperate forests in protected areas or under commercial management. Non-intervention or alternate levels of intervention were comparators. Relevant outcomes were species richness and diversity, excluding that of pyrophilous and saproxylic species. Relevant studies were extracted from a recent systematic map of the evidence on biodiversity impacts of active management in forests set aside for conservation or restoration. Additional searches and a search update were undertaken using a strategy targeted to identify studies focused on prescribed burning interventions. Grey literature and bibliographies of relevant published reviews were also searched for evidence. Studies were assessed for internal and external validity and data were extracted, using validity assessment and data extraction tools specifically designed for this review. Studies were presented in a narrative synthesis and interactive map, and those which were suitable were quantitatively synthesised using meta-analyses, subgroup analysis and meta-regression. Results Searches generated a total of 12,971 unique records. After screening for relevance, 244 studies (from 235 articles) were included in this review. Most studied forests were located in the USA (172/244), with the rest located in Canada, Europe and Australia. Eighty-two studies reporting 219 comparisons were included in the quantitative synthesis. Within the meta-analyses for each group of taxa, we identified a small to moderate volume of evidence, and heterogeneity was ubiquitous. Prescribed burning had significant positive effects on vascular plant richness, non-native vascular plant richness, and in broadleaf forests, herbaceous plant richness. Time since the burn, forest type and climate zone were significant moderators predicting the effect of burning on herbaceous plant richness. No other significant relationships were identified. Conclusions Knowledge gaps exist for studies outside North America, in mixed forests and for non-plant organism outcomes. We identify a need to apply study designs consistently and appropriately, minimising the impact of confounding factors wherever possible, and to provide extensive detail in study reports. We recommend that researchers build long-term datasets charting the impacts of prescribed burning on succession. The lack of consistent findings was likely due to high inter-study heterogeneity, and low numbers of comparable studies in each quantitative synthesis. We found no consistent effects of moderators, and were unable to test the effect of many potential moderators, due to a lack of reporting. Rather than making any general recommendations on the use of prescribed burning for biodiversity restoration, we provide an evidence atlas of previous studies for researchers and practitioners to use. We observe that outcomes are still difficult to predict, and any restoration project should include a component of monitoring to build a stronger evidence base for recommendations and guidelines on how to best achieve conservation targets. Prescribed burning may have harmful effects on taxa that are conservation-dependent and careful planning is needed.

Land management agencies in Queensland conduct planned burning for a variety of reasons, principally for management of fuels for human asset protection and biodiversity management. Using Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service's archived manually derived fire reports, this study considered the individual components of the fire regime (extent, frequency and season) to determine variation between planned and unplanned fire regimes in south-east Queensland. Overall, between 2004 and 2015, planned fire accounted for 31.6% and unplanned fire 68.4% of all fire on Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service state-managed land. Unplanned fire was more common in spring (September–October), and planned fire was more common in winter (June–August). Unplanned fire affected 71.4% of open forests and woodlands (148 563 ha), whereas 58.8% of melaleuca communities (8016 ha) and 66.6% of plantations (2442 ha) were burnt with planned fire. Mapping fire history at a regional scale can be readily done with existing publicly available datasets, which can be used to inform the assessment of planned burning effectiveness for human asset protection and the management of biodiversity. Fire management will benefit from the continued recording of accurate fire occurrence data, which allows for detailed fire regime mapping and subsequent adaptive management of fire regimes in the public domain. Using past fire records, we identified planned and unplanned fire occurrences between 2004 and 2015 in south-east Queensland. Unplanned fires covered a larger extent, were more frequent and occurred mostly in spring, whereas planned fires occurred mostly in winter. Animal movements and use of space are in part determined by interactions between individual attributes such as sex and body size and extrinsic environmental factors such as the seasonal availability, quality and spatial configuration of resource patches in the landscape. Fire is a common and widespread disturbance process that has the potential to affect animal movements through modifications to the environment. Using radiotelemetry, we examined the contribution of these factors to variation in movements and home range over a 5‐year period in a forest‐dwelling terrestrial turtle, Terrapene carolina, at fire‐maintained and unburned habitats in the southeastern United States. Female turtles had annual home‐range sizes twice as large as males and moved longer distances per day during the nesting season (June and July), but males exhibited greater spatial fidelity from year to year. Turtles at the unburned site had home‐range sizes twice as large as those at the fire‐maintained site, and home‐range size also decreased with increasing frequency and extent of fire, but this latter effect was strongest in females. Home‐range behavior was highly repeatable within individuals of both sexes over time. This is the first evidence that fire influences the spatial ecology and movements of turtles, most likely through fire's impact on the spatial configuration, availability and quality of critical resources. That individuals behaved consistently through time, but differently from one another according to both intrinsic individual attributes and extrinsic environmental factors provides strong evidence of consistent inter‐ and intra‐population variation in space use and movement behaviors in T. carolina. Such intra‐specific behavioral variation suggests applying caution when extrapolating results to other sites across the geographic range of a species for use in conservation and management. Abstract Prescribed burning is a widely used strategy in forested landscapes to reduce the risk from wildfires to human lives and valued assets. The ability for managers to undertake prescribed burns is contingent on fuel, weather and operational constraints. In practice, not all areas nominated to be burnt get completed, and within burns that occur, not all the area is burnt. There has been limited research into rates of successful implementation of prescribed burns for fuel management and the degree to which the outcomes of prescribed burning are predictable. To better understand this, we undertook a quantitative analysis of prescribed burn outcomes in the State of Victoria, Australia between July 2009 and July 2015, investigating the likelihood of burns being completed and the time between nomination and completion. For those completed, we used Generalized Additive Models to investigate patterns of burn coverage, both for individual points within burns and aggregated to the burn level. We found a large proportion (29.6%) of scheduled prescribed burns were never burnt, and the time between nomination and completion was highly variable. The size of the nominated burn area was found to influence both the likelihood of completion and the likelihood of burns being postponed. Of burns that were completed, the proportion of area burnt was highly variable (mean 74%, median 84%). Patterns of burnt area were predictable: our point level model could predict the likelihood of any point within a burn being burnt with 66% accuracy from fuel type, aridity and temperature seasonality. The model was more confident in predicting what would remain unburnt than what would burn. Our burn level model explained 55% of variation in the proportion burnt from area weighted fuel type, average aridity, temperature seasonality and the size of the nominated burn area. We investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of prescribed fire and wildfire within Washington State, USA using records from the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Spatiotemporal comparisons of prescribed fire and wildfire area burned revealed that (1) fire activity broadly differed between the eastern and western portion of the state in terms of total area and distribution of burn sources, (2) over the 2004–2019 period, wildfire largely replaced prescribed fire as the predominant source of burning, and (3) wildfire and prescribed fire occur during distinct months of the year. Spatiotemporal variation in prescribed fire activity at regional levels were measured using five parameters: total area burned, total biomass burned, burn days, burn approval rates, and pile burn frequency. Within-region spatial variability in prescribed fire parameters across land ownership categories and bioclimatic categories were often detectable. Regression models of the annualized prescribed fire parameters suggested that prescribed fire activities have been declining in multiple administrative regions over the 2004–2019 period. A descriptive analysis of seasonal trends found that prescribed fire use largely peaked in the fall months, with minor peaks usually occurring in the spring. Lastly, we described how area burned, biomass burned, and pile burn frequency differed between prescribed fires approved and denied by the DNR, and found that approved prescribed fires were typically smaller and burned less biomass than denied fires.

Adapting to the growing frequency of catastrophic wildfires in Greece and mitigating their effects is a complex socio-ecological problem. We used an online survey to query more than 100 engaged stakeholders who can potentially influence possible legislation and fire management organizational reform, emphasizing civil protection agencies and research entities. We focused the questionnaire on the importance of different wildfire effects to understand which were considered negative or unacceptable, indifferent, or positive. For fire prevention, we examined the range of acceptance and views on fuel management and fire use activities that are limited in extent or not allowed in Greece. We also examined the beliefs regarding ignition causes and responsibility, in addition to how different policies might reduce wildfire-related problems. The results revealed an emphasis on reforming wildfire management policies to deal with the way society and agencies function and interact, and mitigate the influence of climate change in wildfire frequency and behavior. In addition, respondents had a negative stance towards allowing wildfires to burn for resource objectives and a strong belief that arsonists are behind most ignitions. They also believe the lack of a national cadaster system is a major source of wildfire-related problems. The results indicate little support for fuel treatments, but increased acceptance for the legalization of fire use during firefighting (backfires). This study summarizes current wildfire perceptions in Greece and identifies opportunities and barriers to changes in wildfire governance to improve risk management programs and guide post-fire management and mitigation.

Over the past century, scientific understanding of prescribed burns in California’s forests transitioned from being interpreted as ecologically harmful to highly beneficial. The state’s prescribed burn policies mirrored this evolution. Harold Biswell, a University of California at Berkeley ecologist, studied prescribed burns and became a major advocate for their use during the 1950s and 1960s. Drawing primarily on archival materials from Biswell and the state government, this historical case study presents an example of how a scientist successfully contributed to integrating research into policy and practice through consistent and targeted science communication to gain allies among environmental organizations, local stakeholders, and governments. Though at first isolated by his academic peers for proposing that fire could provide environmental benefits in forests, Biswell continued conducting and sharing his research and findings with academic and non-academic audiences. Over several decades, Biswell engaged in conversations which ultimately advanced policy changes at the state level to expand the use of prescribed burns. Despite lacking a formal role in government, Biswell used his academic platform to promote the policy implications of his research. Current and future researchers can draw on these lessons to advocate effectively for other science-informed policies.

Abstract Prescribed fire is commonly used as a tool to meet a range of forest management goals. Owing to their limited movement abilities, terrestrial turtles are likely to be at high risk of injury and mortality, and to experience other fitness consequences with population-level implications from fire. Using radiotelemetry, we studied the responses of Eastern Box Turtles, Terrapene carolina carolina , to prescribed fire management in a sandhills Longleaf Pine forest system over a five-year period and compared our results to a nearby population in an unburned coastal plain location. Individual variation in turtle survival was strongly dependent on how frequently and extensively the areas were burned, with annual survival rates of 94.5% in unburned areas decreasing to 45.9% in the most extensively burned areas. Turtles at the fire-maintained sandhills site had annual survival rates 4.9% less than at the unburned coastal plain site, and females had annual survival rates 6.8% less than males. Survival varied seasonally, with greatest mortality rates in winter and spring, especially among females. Growth rates and body condition did not differ between sites, nor did they vary according to fire extent and frequency at the fire-maintained site. Although mortality was greater and spatially variable at the fire- maintained site, annual survival rates across the site (86–90% for females and males, respectively) were comparable to other stable populations of T. carolina. The lesser than expected mortality rate at the fire-maintained site was likely the result of turtles' strong selection of mesic hardwood forests near bottomlands and streams – habitats that may serve as refugia from fire. In areas where T. carolina conservation is a priority, land managers should integrate maintenance of fire refuge habitats into burn planning to minimize unintended negative impacts to this imperiled species. Prescribed fire is increasingly viewed as a valuable tool for reversing ecological consequences of fire suppression within fire-adapted forests. While the use of burning treatments in northern temperate conifer forests has received considerable attention, the long-term (>10 year) effects on understory composition and dynamics have not been quantified. We describe the persistence of prescribed fire effects on the woody and herbaceous understory in a mature red pine ( Pinus resinosa Ait.) forest in northern Minnesota, USA, over a ∼50-year period, as well as the relative roles of fire season and frequency in affecting vegetation responses. Burning treatments were applied from 1960 to 1970 on 0.4 ha experimental units and crossed fire season and frequency in a randomized block design. Burning altered shrub layer dynamics and composition in both the short and long terms and was influenced by both fire season and frequency, with frequent summer season burns having the largest impact, including greatest control of hazel ( Corylus spp.). The application of fire facilitated regeneration of pine; however, recruitment into the overstory was limited. Additionally, community composition of the herbaceous understory diverged 40+ years following burning. This study highlights the importance of continued burning in affecting vegetation responses and the potential of fire as a long-lasting vegetation management tool in these forests. Abstract: Land abandonment is a global issue with important implications in Mediterranean mountain areas. Abandoned Mediterranean croplands start a process of secondary succession that is initially colonized by grasslands, shrubs and forest. In Mediterranean mountain areas, the process is very slow, so the shrubs remain for decades, preventing livestock from accessing pastureland. Therefore, farmers have to burn or clear the shrubs in order to provide pasture, a practice that has recently been encouraged by several regional governments in Spain. Data from experimental plots of the Aísa Valley Experimental Station in the Spanish Pyrenees allow to evaluate the effects of burning and clearing shrubs on physical and chemical soil properties, runoff production and soil erosion rates. The results suggested that clearing shrubs returned more positive results than burning, as it improved soil quality and slowed soil erosion while producing slightly higher runoff coefficients, which is very important in Mediterranean environments where water is a scarce resource. Clearing shrubs improves soil characteristics by increasing organic matter and CN ratio, which promote the expansion of herbaceous species with a high pastoral value. The results suggested that the policy of clearing shrubs is suitable for managing abandoned lands in Mediterranean mountain areas. Further studies at catchment scale will be needed to confirm the impact of substituting shrubs for meadows and to understand the connectivity of the flows measured from pedon and slope to the watershed scale. Grass management has been used for many years at airports in an attempt to reduce numbers of birds and other wildlife and the collisions with aircraft associated with them. We evaluated the impacts of grassland alteration by mowing and fi re on the abundance, diversity, and frequency of birds using 1 control and 2 experimental grass plots from 2009 to 2010 on a U.S. Army airfield in Colorado located in short-grass prairie. Density of breeding birds was highest in the mowed plot. Numbers of birds observed in 34 surveys conducted during the non-breeding season in the burned (x = 41) and mowed (x = 24) plots were greater than in an unmanaged control (x = 7) plot. Bird species diversity in the nonbreeding season was greatest in the control plot. Horned larks (Eremophila alpestris) was the most frequently observed bird species and occurred in high numbers on the burned and mowed plots, possibly because of its preference for short vegetation and bare ground. This species is recognized as hazardous to aircraft in part because of its habit of forming large flocks in the nonbreeding season. All 3 study plots were dominated by grasses and forbs, with minimal shrub and cactus cover. Litter cover was greatest on the control plot, while the burned plot had the greatest coverage of bare ground. Results from this study are limited because the small size of the airfield precluded placement of multiple treatment plots. Additional study in larger airfields with multiple treatment plots would be required before management recommendations regarding the use of fi re and mowing can be made for airfields in areas with short-grass prairie.

Prescribed fire conducted in fire-prone areas is a cost-effective choice for forest management, but it also affects many of the physicochemical and bio-geological properties of the forest soil, in a similar manner to wild fires. The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of the mercury mobilization after a prescribed fire and the subsequent temporal changes in concentration. A prescribed fire was conducted in a legacy mine site in Central Victoria, Australia, in late August 2015 and soil sample collection and analyses were carried out two days before and two days after the fire, followed by collection at the end of each season and after an intense rainfall event in September 2016. Results revealed the occurrence of mercury volatilization (8.3–97%) during the fire, and the mercury concentration displayed a significant difference (p < 0.05) before and immediately after the fire. Integrated assessment with number of pollution indices has shown that the study site is extremely contaminated with mercury during all the sampling events, and this poses a serious ecological risk due to the health impacts of mercury on human and ecosystems. In times of climate fluctuation with concomitant increase in forest fire (including prescribed fire), and subsequent precipitation and runoff, the potential for an increased amount of mercury being mobilized is of heighted significance. Forest fires can greatly affect soil properties and processes. In the study of the fire effects on soil, the soil thickness affected by heat depends on the characteristics of the fire and soil itself, but also on the attribute to be measured. The objective of this work is to know to what thickness (up to 1, 2 or 3 cm) various sensitive soil properties are immediately affected by a controlled burning. To achieve this aim, unaltered fresh topsoil (mollic horizon) of a fire-prone Aleppo pine forest in the semiarid Ebro Valley (NE-Spain) were sampled and, without destroying their original structure, burned from the surface in an outdoor combustion tunnel in triplicate. Biological properties are measured, including basal and normalized soil respiration (bSR and nSR), β- D -glucosidase (GLUase) and phosphomonoestarase (PHOase) activities, and related parameters, such as total organic matter (TOM), oxidizable organic C (OxC), nonhydrolyzable carbon (NHC), P-Olsen, pH, soil moisture and soil water repellency (WR). In the unburned soil, most of these properties showed a decreasing gradient with depth which is modified after burning, in some cases inverted (as enzymatic activities and W R), in others intensified (P-Olsen) and in most, truncated, with a maximum value in the second cm. The depth of the soil in which changes were recorded varied according to the attibute considered; thus, burning significantly decreased only up to the first cm: bSR (73 %) and TOM (81 %), up to 2 cm: PHOase (89 %), OxC (17 %) and W R (96 %) and up to 3 cm depth GLUase (58 %), NHC (24 %) and moisture (73 %). However, P-Olsen and pH both increased after burning up to 1 and 3 cm soil depths, with increases of up to 240 % and 11 %, respectively. In conclusion, fire effects on soil are depth dependent, and this dependency is not uniform across soil properties. Although wildfires are important in many forested ecosystems, increasing suburbanization necessitates management with prescribed fires. The physiological responses of overstory trees to prescribed fire has received little study and may differ from typical wildfires due to the lower intensity and timing of prescribed fire in the dormant season. Trees may be negatively affected by prescribed fires if injury occurs, or positively affected due to reduced competition from understory vegetation and release of nutrients from partially consumed litter. We estimated sap flow and photosynthetic parameters before a late-March prescribed fire and throughout the growing season in burned and unburned pitch pine ( Pinus rigida L.) sites in the New Jersey Pinelands to determine how water use and photosynthetic capacity were affected. Water use was similar between sites before the fire but 27 % lower in burned trees immediately following the fire. After about a month, water use in the burned site was 11-25 % higher than pines from the unburned site and these differences lasted into the summer. Photosynthetic capacity remained similar between sites but instantaneous intrinsic water use efficiency increased by 22 % and maximum Rubisco carboxylation rate ( V) was over three times greater in the summer compared to the pre-fire period in the burned site, whereas the unburned site exhibited similar V and intrinsic water use efficiencies between pre-fire and summer measurements. These differences in physiology suggest that the prescribed fire altered the amount of water and nutrients that pines had access to and led to increased water use and water use efficiency; both of which are important in this water- and nutrient-limited ecosystem. The article presents a study which investigates the impact of fire and grassland alteration from mowing on bird activity at the airfield in Colorado from 2009-2010. The study used spot-mapping surveys, modified area-search surveys, and observational method. Results show that species richness observed to be higher on the control plot, while the higher breeding bird density was confirmed to be on the mowed plot.

We tested the effectiveness of distribution-prediction models for four rare herbaceous wetland species in the Watarase wetland, Japan, based on data obtained from aerial images. We used visible and near-infrared aerial images from three seasons, and elevations and vegetation heights derived from the images. Because spatial autocorrelation in species distribution data often biases the estimated effects of certain variables and reduces the prediction accuracy of distribution models, we compared the predictions of an intrinsic conditional autoregressive (CAR) model, which accounts for spatial autocorrelation, with those of a standard logistic regression model. The four study species had different distribution patterns: Ophioglossum namegatae and Impatiens ohwadae had aggregated distributions, whereas Galium tokyoense and Thalictrum simplex var. brevipes had scattered distributions. Predictions based on remote sensing images performed well for O. namegatae with the intrinsic CAR model and for I. ohwadae with both the logistic and CAR models; performance was poor for G. tokyoense and T. simplex var. brevipes with both models. Prediction accuracy improved by the CAR model in comparison to the logistic model most in O. namegatae and least in I. ohwadae. Impatiens ohwadae's distribution was explained well by ground height. In contrast, the apparent improvement in the prediction for O. namegatae resulted from a substantial spatial random effect, suggesting the presence of determinants that could not be detected by remote sensing. The number of explanatory variables with large effects decreased in the intrinsic CAR model in three species possibly by avoiding spatial pseudoreplication, but not for T. simplex var. brevipes. The modification of the soil chemical properties by fire is directly related to the degree of soil heating and to the weight and spatial distribution of vegetation and litter accumulated. This research was aimed at studying the immediate effects of two controlled burns on the organic carbon (OC), and on the total and available nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) of surface soils (0-5cm) of the southern Caldenal region, Argentina. The pH, CEC, and available cations were also evaluated. Follow-up samplings were carried out yearly, during the three years between the burns. The initial unburned shrub vegetation-covered soil had a greater concentration of total and available nutrients than the herbaceous-covered soil. Soil pH and CEC values were slightly lower in shrub soil. The first controlled burn generally caused a beneficial effect on the total elements either immediately or one or two years after the burn. It also caused a considerable flush of the available nutrients that was more persistent under the shrubs. The changes were temporary and generally, the nutrients levels returned to those of the unburned soils during the second or third year after the burn. On the other hand, a second moderate controlled fire experienced three years later was shown to have no measurable effect on most soil properties, but a decrease of total S in grass soil and NO[sub 3][sup -]-N in woody soil was observed after burning, pointing out the risk of a soil fertility depletion. Prescribed fire is an essential management practice in pyrogenic ecosystems, but fire can also be a significant disturbance and source of mortality for both target and non-target species. Seasonal periods of animal inactivity may provide opportunities to design burn plans that minimize negative impacts to species of conservation concern, but few studies have rigorously examined this possibility. Using radiotelemetry, we studied overwintering behavior and interactions with fire in a forest-dwelling terrestrial turtle, the Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina), over an eight-year period at two sites that use prescribed fire in forest management. Turtles at both sites selected predominantly hardwood forests and mesic habitats and avoided upland pine forests. Turtles buried deepest (2.9 – 3.2 cm) below the soil-litter interface in late February and then moved gradually shallower until emergence in early April. Emergence timing varied over a 58-day period, but was consistent within individuals from year to year. Turtles also maintained fidelity to refuge locations, but those overwintering in burned areas selected sites over twice as far from refuges used in previous years compared to those in unburned areas. The areas and habitats selected by turtles during winter served as refugia from fire, and those whose refuges did burn remained buffered from lethal temperatures even at shallow burial depths. The only fire-related injury or mortality occurred during seasons of surface activity. Timing burning and other forest management practices during periods of winter dormancy may thus minimize threats to turtle populations, but modifications to prescribed fire regimes must also be balanced with other management objectives.
