Abstract

Systematic conservation planning provides a framework to identify representative areas of biodiversity, but its effectiveness depends on the choice of surrogates and targets. Mexico has conducted participatory and comprehensive gap analyses. We present the results of two independent surrogate assessments to test the criteria used in Mexico’s spatial conservation prioritization. We tested the surrogate efficiency of range restricted, endemic, and threatened mammals and the influence of target–setting on the spatial configuration of the conservation network, as well as the performance of taxonomic–based surrogates. Results show that target–setting heavily influences the spatial configuration and irreplaceability values of the conservation area network. Representation effectiveness and coverage of species distribution was sensitive to surrogate selection but not to target–setting. Threatened and rare species were poorly represented when other surrogate species were used, while threatened mammals represented 90 % of all species. The effectiveness of networks designed for a single vertebrate taxon varied greatly; reptiles and amphibians performed better than random achieving high species representation.

Abstract

El presente estudio tuvo como finalidad el aprovechamiento de los residuos azucareros de forma técnicamente viable por medio de la producción y evaluación del proceso de compostaje. Para lograr los objetivos se establecieron combinaciones de tres tipos de materia prima, dos fuentes de microorganismos y dos métodos de aireación. Las pilas se establecieron bajo un diseño de tres factores, y se valoraron dos veces por semana los parámetros: temperatura, pH y conductividad eléctrica. Otros parámetros como materia orgánica, población microbiana, porcentaje de humedad, macro y micronutrimentos, cromatografía de Pfeifer y relación C/N, seevaluaron al inicio y al final del proceso. El mejor método fue el de aireación por volteos, y la formulación más equilibrada para macro y micronutrimentos y mayor concentración de materia orgánica fue la formulación con 50% de bagazo, 25% de cachaza y 25% de ceniza. Al finalizar el proceso, la formulación conformada por 40% bagazo, 30% cachaza y 30% ceniza tuvo la relación C/N más cercana a los valores recomendados entre 20-30. Los microorganismos comerciales mantuvieron una mayor población microbiana durante el proceso hasta su culminación. La temperatura llegó a la temperatura inicial de 45º C; el pH para el proceso fue el óptimo de 8 a 8.5 aunque finalizó elevado 9 a 9.5.

Abstract

This paper summarizes a ground-motion database developed for the NGA-Sub Project. The database consists of two- A nd three-component ground-motion recordings from selected earthquakes in subduction zones. The database also includes the supporting data such as source, path, and site metadata. The earthquakes are located in Japan, Taiwan, the Pacific Northwest region of North America, Alaska, Mexico, Central and South America, and New Zealand. The events in the database are classified as interface, intraslab, or outer-rise, and have magnitudes ranging from 4 to 9. The database includes more than 71,000 three-component recordings, most of which are from digital accelerograms. The database includes PGA, PGV, pseudo-spectral acceleration for eleven damping values between 0.5% and 30%, Fourier amplitude spectra for frequencies from 0.1 to 100 Hz, and significant-shaking durations based on Arias Intensity. These data are analyzed in the project to model various ground-motion properties.

Abstract

Twenty-five years since foundational publications on valuing ecosystem services for human well-being1,2, addressing the global biodiversity crisis3 still implies confronting barriers to incorporating nature’s diverse values into decision-making. These barriers include powerful interests supported by current norms and legal rules such as property rights, which determine whose values and which values of nature are acted on. A better understanding of how and why nature is (under)valued is more urgent than ever4. Notwithstanding agreements to incorporate nature’s values into actions, including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)5 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals6, predominant environmental and development policies still prioritize a subset of values, particularly those linked to markets, and ignore other ways people relate to and benefit from nature7. Arguably, a ‘values crisis’ underpins the intertwined crises of biodiversity loss and climate change8, pandemic emergence9 and socio-environmental injustices10. On the basis of more than 50,000 scientific publications, policy documents and Indigenous and local knowledge sources, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) assessed knowledge on nature’s diverse values and valuation methods to gain insights into their role in policymaking and fuller integration into decisions7,11. Applying this evidence, combinations of values-centred approaches are proposed to improve valuation and address barriers to uptake, ultimately leveraging transformative changes towards more just (that is, fair treatment of people and nature, including inter- and intragenerational equity) and sustainable futures. © 2023, The Author(s).

Abstract

Brouwer et al. present preclinical evidence in support of a COVID-19 vaccine candidate, designed as a self-assembling two-component protein nanoparticle displaying multiple copies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which induces strong neutralizing antibody responses and protects from high-dose SARS-CoV-2 challenge.The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is continuing to disrupt personal lives, global healthcare systems, and economies. Hence, there is an urgent need for a vaccine that prevents viral infection, transmission, and disease. Here, we present a two-component protein-based nanoparticle vaccine that displays multiple copies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Immunization studies show that this vaccine induces potent neutralizing antibody responses in mice, rabbits, and cynomolgus macaques. Abstract

Importance: An intraoperative higher level of positive end-expiratory positive pressure (PEEP) with alveolar recruitment maneuvers improves respiratory function in obese patients undergoing surgery, but the effect on clinical outcomes is uncertain. Objective: To determine whether a higher level of PEEP with alveolar recruitment maneuvers decreases postoperative pulmonary complications in obese patients undergoing surgery compared with a lower level of PEEP. Design, Setting, and Participants: Randomized clinical trial of 2013 adults with body mass indices of 35 or greater and substantial risk for postoperative pulmonary complications who were undergoing noncardiac, nonneurological surgery under general anesthesia. The trial was conducted at 77 sites in 23 countries from July 2014-February 2018; final follow-up: May 2018. Interventions: Patients were randomized to the high level of PEEP group (n = 989), consisting of a PEEP level of 12 cm H2O with alveolar recruitment maneuvers (a stepwise increase of tidal volume and eventually PEEP) or to the low level of PEEP group (n = 987), consisting of a PEEP level of 4 cm H2O. All patients received volume-controlled ventilation with a tidal volume of 7 mL/kg of predicted body weight. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was a composite of pulmonary complications within the first 5 postoperative days, including respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, bronchospasm, new pulmonary infiltrates, pulmonary infection, aspiration pneumonitis, pleural effusion, atelectasis, cardiopulmonary edema, and pneumothorax. Among the 9 prespecified secondary outcomes, 3 were intraoperative complications, including hypoxemia (oxygen desaturation with Spo2 ≤92% for >1 minute). Results: Among 2013 adults who were randomized, 1976 (98.2%) completed the trial (mean age, 48.8 years; 1381 [69.9%] women; 1778 [90.1%] underwent abdominal operations). In the intention-to-treat analysis, the primary outcome occurred in 211 of 989 patients (21.3%) in the high level of PEEP group compared with 233 of 987 patients (23.6%) in the low level of PEEP group (difference, -2.3% [95% CI, -5.9% to 1.4%]; risk ratio, 0.93 [95% CI, 0.83 to 1.04]; P =.23). Abstract

BACKGROUND: Systematic reviews allow health decisions to be informed by the best available research evidence. However, their number is proliferating quickly, and many skills are required to identify all the relevant reviews for a specific question. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We screen 10 bibliographic databases on a daily or weekly basis, to identify systematic reviews relevant for health decision-making. Using a machine-based approach developed for this project we select reviews, which are then validated by a network of more than 1000 collaborators. After screening over 1,400,000 records we have identified more than 300,000 systematic reviews, which are now stored in a single place and accessible through an easy-to-use search engine. This makes Epistemonikos the largest database of its kind. CONCLUSIONS: Using a systematic approach, recruiting a broad network of collaborators and implementing automated methods, we developed a one-stop shop for systematic reviews relevant for health decision making.

Abstract

In the present work, the effectiveness of using a styrene/ethylene-butylene/styrene rubber grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) as toughening material in ternary blends with two polyamide-6 nanocomposites or PP with different molecular weight as matrix phases was evaluated in terms of SEM and TEM morphology, WAXD, capillary rheometry, and tensile properties determination. Two metallocene polyethylenes and two polypropylenes were used as the dispersed phase in these ternary blends, and the effect of the comonomer contents in the former was also evaluated. Results showed that the blends prepared with metallocene polyethylenes are tougher than those prepared with PP as the dispersed phase and no significant changes in the Young's modulus or tensile strength were observed when changing the type of metallocene polyethylenes used. When a blend of SEBS/SEBS-g-MA instead of SEBS-g-MA alone was used as a compatibilizing agent in the ternary PA-6 nanocomposite blends, a major decrease in the Young's modulus and tensile strength and a higher toughness were observed. The formation of PA-OMMT particle clusters seems to improve the toughness/stiffness balance. These results are related to the degree of clay dispersion in the polyamide and to the type of morphology developed in the different blends. POLYM. ENG. Objetivo: Analizar las causas de partos PT en nuestra institucion. Comparar morbilidad neonatal de nacidos PT y de termino. Metodos: Estudio de cohorte retrospectivo. Se revisan registros de nacimientos entre enero de 2009 y diciembre de 2012 identificando los nacidos vivos entre las 34 0/7 y 36 6/7 y entre las 39 0/6 y 40 6/7 semanas. Se identifica grupo clinico de parto prematuro al que pertenecen. Se compara frecuencia de resultados perinatales de nacidos PT y de termino completo. Resultados: En el periodo estudiado nacieron 8.890 ninos vivos. Tasa de partos PT fue 7,49% (n = 666). El 64,11% fue por causa idiopatica o asociado a rotura de membranas y 35,89% por indicacion medica. Dentro del grupo de indicaciones medicas un 19,25% de interrupciones no estan basadas en evidencia y ninguna puramente electiva. Los PT, comparados con ninos de termino, tienen mas riesgo de hospitalizacion y morbilidad neonatal; este riesgo es mayor a menor edad gestacional. Conclusiones: En nuestro hospital 1 de cada 5 PT pudo haber nacido a una edad gestacional mayor, lo que podria haber evitado los riesgos perinatales asociados. Se sugiere que las instituciones de salud analicen las causas de interrupciones del embarazo en el grupo de PT, lo que podria ser un indicador de calidad obstetrica.

Abstract

This study examines the potential of adding electric arc furnace slag to bituminous mixtures to be heated by microwaves. The susceptibility of bituminous mixtures to microwave energy is limited and so, in order to improve the energy performance of the heating process, it is necessary to incorporate additives or components to the mixture so as to improve the capacity for microwave heating. The article presents the results of adding various components, (steel wool, scrap tire wire, silicon carbide, iron filings) and an alternative aggregate: electric arc furnace slag. According to the results obtained in the laboratory, slag addition of at least 5% by weight of the bituminous mixture represents the best option for both technical and economic reasons. The results may promote the valorization of this steel industry residue in bituminous mixtures by improving microwave heating response., El presente trabajo examina el potencial de añadir escorias siderúrgicas de horno de arco eléctrico en mezclas bituminosas cuando se calientan con energía de microondas. La susceptibilidad de las mezclas bituminosas a las microondas es limitada y con el objetivo de incrementarla es necesario incorporar aditivos o componentes que sí son susceptibles. El artículo presenta los resultados obtenidos con varios aditivos (lana de acero, alambre metálico reciclado de neumáticos fuera de uso, carburo de silíceo y limaduras de hierro) y un árido alternativo: escorias de horno de arco eléctrico. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos en el estudio, la incorporación de escorias en al menos un 5% en masa de la mezcla bituminosa representa la mejor opción por motivos técnicos y económicos. Este resultado puede potenciar la valorización de este residuo de la industria del acero en mezclas bituminosas para mejorar su respuesta al calentamiento con energía microondas.

Abstract

Summary: Mechanisms underlying loss of consciousness following propofol administration remain incompletely understood. The objective of this study was to compare frontal lobe electroencephalography activity and brainstem reflexes during intravenous induction of general anaesthesia, in patients receiving a typical bolus dose (fast infusion) of propofol compared with a slower infusion rate. We sought to determine whether brainstem suppression ('bottom‐up') predominates over loss of cortical function ('top‐down'). Sixteen ASA physical status‐1 patients were randomly assigned to either a fast or slow propofol infusion group. Loss of consciousness and brainstem reflexes were assessed every 30 s by a neurologist blinded to treatment allocation. We performed a multitaper spectral analysis of all electroencephalography data obtained from each participant. Brainstem reflexes were present in all eight patients in the slow infusion group, while being absent in all patients in the fast infusion group, at the moment of loss of consciousness (p = 0.010). An increase in alpha band power was observed before loss of consciousness only in participants allocated to the slow infusion group. Alpha band power emerged several minutes after the loss of consciousness in participants allocated to the fast infusion group. Our results show a predominance of 'bottom‐up' mechanisms during fast infusion rates and 'top‐down' mechanisms during slow infusion rates. The underlying mechanisms by which propofol induces loss of consciousness are potentially influenced by the speed of infusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Birth records between January 2009 and December 2012 were reviewed identifying live births between 34 0/7 and 36 6/7 and between 39 0/6 and 40 6/7 weeks of gestation. Clinical group of preterm labor to which they belong was identified. Frequency of perinatal outcomes of late-preterm and term infants were compared. Results: In the period under study there were 8890 live birth. The late-preterm birth rate was 7.49% (n = 666); 64.11% of them was idiopathic in cause or associated with rupture of membranes and 35.89% was for medical indication. In the group of medical indications 19.25% of the interruptions were not based on evidence and none were purely elective. Late-preterm infants have higher risk of hospitalization and neonatal morbidity than term infants; this risk is higher at earlier gestational ages. Conclusions: In our hospital 1 in 5 late-preterm birth could have been born at higher gestational age, preventing perinatal risks. It is suggested that health institutions analyze causes of interruption of pregnancy in the late-preterm group, which could constitute an indicator of obstetric quality.

Abstract

The molecular electric properties and energy of the complexes formed between graphene models of different areas with chrysene, 20 dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and dibenzo[a,h]pyrene were investigated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Three different sizes (in Å) of graphene models were analyzed: 10 × 10, 15 × 15 and 20 × 20. DFT calculations were performed with the software Materials Studio 5.5, using the functionals HCTH and PBE with Grimme's dispersion correction (PBE-D), within the generalized gradient approximation GGA and numerical DNP basis set. According to results, the PBE-D functional allows a good description of structure, energy and electrical properties of studied systems. In contrast, the HCTH functional poorly reproduced the energy and structures, whereas it allows the description of the complexes through the interaction electric properties. The close relationship between the interaction energy with the interaction polarizability suggests a high contribution of the London dispersion forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study focuses on the glow discharge generated with a gases mixture of Ethanol (C2H5OH) and Helium (He), at different concentrations maintained at a total pressure of 2.0 Torr. We used optical emission spectroscopy (OES) to analyze the discharge mixture at different concentrations of Helium. Single Langmuir probe data was used to determine the Electron Energy Distribution Function (EEDF). For the total C2H5OH/He mixture plasma concentrations, the EEDF has a Maxwellian distribution function. A decrease in He concentration results in significant changes in the EEDF, this behavior is related to the increase in the C2H5OH percentage must increase the energy loses of the electrons in the inelastic collision with C2H5OH producing a significant change in the EEDF, therefore, the EEDF pattern results in an increase of electron–molecule reaction rates. The rise in electron temperature for increasing Helium percentage is explained by the decreasing electron energy loss in the inelastic collisions with C2H5OH molecule. It observes a decrease of electron density ne as a function of the Helium percentage, which can be related to the ratio between ionization cross sections of Helium and C2H6O molecule. The active species are generated in the electron-molecule processes, which are associated with electron impact dissociation of C2H5OH and Helium electronic impact excitation in the gas phase. The emission optical spectra (OES) show changes in the intensity of the most important peaks of the plasma mixture, which indicates the dependence in the formation of the plasma as a function of the percentage of the gases. The changes in the intensities of the same observed species are due to different processes of excitation and ionization energies of the system, in addition to the increase of He metastable states He I. 44. Post-operative cognitive dysfunction at 3 months in adults after non-cardiac surgery: a qualitative systematic review

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Post-operative cognitive dysfunction is defined as a decline in cognitive functions that occurs after surgery, but different diagnostic criteria and incidences have been reported in medical literature. Our aim was to determine incidence of post-operative cognitive dysfunction 3 months after non-cardiac surgery in adults. METHODS: A systematic review of available evidence was performed by PRISMA guidelines. A search was done in May-July 2015 on PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS, Scielo, Clinical Trials, and Grey Literature Reports. Inclusion criteria were prospective design studies with patients over 18 years old, surgery under general or regional anesthesia, follow-up for 3 months, and use of a neurocognitive battery for diagnosis. We excluded studies made on cardiac or brain surgery patients. Risk of bias was assessed using tools from National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. RESULTS: We selected 24 studies. Average age was 68 years. Only five studies reported incidence of cognitive decline for a non-surgical control group. Median number of tests used was 5 (range 3-13). Pooled incidence of post-operative cognitive dysfunction at 3 months was 11.7% [95% CI 10.9-12.5] but with several methodological differences between studies. Increasing age was the most consistent risk factor identified (seven studies). CONCLUSIONS: Post-operative cognitive dysfunction in patients is frequent, especially in patients over 60 years old. Limitations include methodological differences in studies. Efforts must be made to reach a consensus in definition and diagnosis for future research.

Abstract

Tesis (Magíster en Desarrollo Curricular y Proyectos Educativos) La presente investigación es un estudio basado en un diseño cuasi experimental realizado a niños y niñas chilenos que cursan tercer año básico de la escuela Palestina en el sector Palomares de la Comuna de Concepción. El estudio tuvo como finalidad determinar la influencia del uso de acciones innovadoras en la adquisición y el desarrollo de habilidades de comprensión lectora en alumnos de tercer año básico de la escuela Palestina de Palomares, perteneciente al Departamento de Administración educacional de la ciudad de Concepción. Mediante la selección de una muestra aleatoria de 16 sujetos para el grupo experimental y 16 sujetos para el grupo control, de un universo total de 32 sujetos, se elaboró una serie de acciones metodológicas innovadoras para el trabajo de una unidad de enseñanza que se implementó durante 12 sesiones en el aula de informática del establecimiento educacional. En la etapa inicial de este estudio, a ambos grupos se les aplicó un pre test, donde se utilizó como instrumento de medición una prueba de comprensión lectora. El análisis de los datos se realizó mediante la técnica de comparación de datos obtenidos como resultados del diagnóstico anterior a la intervención. El grupo control recibió un método tradicional de enseñanza mientras que el grupo experimental fue sometido a una acción innovadora que contempló la pedagogía teatral con uso de tics. Finalmente, para el análisis de los datos y posterior presentación de los resultados obtenidos, se aplicó un post test a ambos grupos cuyos resultados revelaron que la acción innovadora aplicada al grupo experimental tuvo un impacto positivo en el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora de los sujetos. Los resultados la investigación pueden ser el punto de partida para una investigación posterior que confirme la hipótesis siguiente: “El uso de acciones innovadoras, es más efectivo en el desarrollo de la comprensión lectora en niños de tercer año básico que las estrategias docentes tradicionales”

Abstract

Las enfermedades respiratorias constituyen complicaciones frecuentes en la infección por VIH. La Tomografía Axial Computarizada de Alta Resolución (TACAR) ha demostrado ser superior a las técnicas de imagen convencionales para establecer diagnóstico de enfermedad pulmonar. Se realizó un estudio con la finalidad de establecer la asociación entre patrones tomográficos pulmonares y el estado inmunológico de pacientes VIH+. Se evaluaron 35 pacientes sintomáticos respiratorios y/o con radiografía torácica patológica. Se observó una asociación entre la presencia de patrón en vidrio esmerilado e infección por P jirovecii. Asimismo, se observó una asociación entre diagnóstico de histoplasmosis pulmonar y patrón de panal de abejas, quistes pulmonares y nódulos. Se demostraron pocas correlaciones entre patrones tomográficos y conteo de linfocitos T CD4+. En conclusión, los hallazgos en la TACAR pueden predecir determinados tipos de infección requiriendo de más estudios para extrapolar esta asociación a otras enfermedades pulmonares no infecciosas en el paciente VIH+. Respiratory diseases are frequent complications in HIV infection. High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) has proven superior to conventional imaging techniques to establish a pulmonary disease diagnosis. A study was conducted in order to establish the association between tomographic pulmonary patterns and immune status of HIV-infected patients. We evaluated 35 patients with respiratory symptoms and / or abnormal chest radiograph. An association was observed between the presence of ground glass pattern and P jirovecii infection. Likewise, a correlation between pulmonary histoplasmosis diagnosis and honeycomb pattern, lung cysts and nodules was established. Few correlation between tomographic patterns and CD4 + T lymphocyte counts was observed. In summary, HRCT findings can predict certain types of infection; nevertheless, further studies are required to extrapolate this association to other noninfectious lung diseases in HIV-infected patients.
