Abstract

Intelligent tutoring systems have been highlighted as a tool for learning support, mainly because its adaptation to user's condition and application scenario. In the face of this pandemic situation, learning supporting tools, as tutoring systems, because of their viability for application in remote environment, showed as an alternative for professors and students support. This paper addresses a proposal for content adaptation to learning, applying artificial intelligence techniques to text Generation and natural language processing. Furthermore, this paper considered existence for different learning styles, varying according to student personality and his way to collect information, capable to influence in learning level. This style variation, accordingly, to a model defined in literature, directs content adaptation model to be done, generating an adapted result to each learning style. Personalized content generation process allows an advance in way to use tutoring systems in learning, creating a format for directed content delivery with gains for environment's user, generating a personalized results and conducting to a more effective learning. As a result, expect to obtain a methodology to content generation based on pre-defined learning styles, by mean an automatized process to content adaptation from an initial entry in unique format. Abstract

Superpixels could aggregate pixels with similar properties, thus reducing the number of image primitives for subsequent advanced computer vision tasks. Nevertheless, existing algorithms are not effective enough to tackle computing redundancy and inaccurate segmentation. To this end, an optimized superpixel generation framework termed Boundary Awareness and Content Adaptation (BACA) is presented. Firstly, an adaptive seed sampling method based on content complexity is proposed in the initialization stage. Different from the conventional uniform mesh initialization, it takes content differentiation into consideration to incipiently eliminate the redundancy of seed distribution. In addition to the efficient initialization strategy, this work also leverages contour prior information to strengthen the boundary adherence from whole to part. During the similarity calculation of inspecting the unlabeled pixels in the non-iterative clustering framework, a multi-feature associated measurement is put forward to ameliorate the misclassification of boundary pixels. Experimental results indicate that the two optimizations could generate a synergistic effect. The integrated BACA achieves an outstanding under-segmentation error (3.34%) on the BSD dataset over the state-of-the-art performances with a minimum number of superpixels (345). Abstract

We present SliceView, a simple and inexpensive multi-view display made with multiple parallel translucent sheets that sit on top of a regular monitor; each sheet reflects different 2D images that are perceived cumulatively. A technical study is performed on the reflected and transmitted light for sheets of different thicknesses. A user study compares SliceView with a commercial light-field display (LookingGlass) regarding the perception of information at multiple depths. More importantly, we present automatic adaptations of existing content to SliceView: 2D layered graphics such as retro-games or painting tools, movies and subtitles, and regular 3D scenes with multiple clipping z-planes. We show that it is possible to create an inexpensive multi-view display and automatically adapt content for it; moreover, the depth perception on some tasks is superior to the one obtained in a commercial light-field display. Abstract

Smart mobile devices and cloud computing are widely used today. While mobile and portable devices have different capabilities, architectures, operating systems, and communication channels than one another, government data are distributed over heterogeneous systems. This paper proposes a 3-tier mediation framework providing single application to manage all governmental services. The framework is based on private cloud computing for adapting the content of Mobile-Government (M-Government) services using Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Derive Unique Key Per Transaction (DUKPT). The 3-layers in the framework are: presence, integration, and homogenization. The presence layer is responsible for adapting the content with regard to four contexts: device, personal, location, and connectivity contexts. The integration layer, which is hosted in a private cloud server, is responsible for integrating heterogeneous data sources. The homogenization layer is responsible for converting data into XML format. INTRODUCTION: Mobile Learning is a new pivotal learning trend nowadays. With the increasing use of sophisticatedsmartphones equipped with augmented reality supporting tools and sensors, mobile learning platforms are expected todeliver tailor-made and customized learning elements to learners. Context-awareness is regarded as the fundamentalapproach or workaround to lift this learning style to distribute adaptive and personalized learning elements in mobiledevices.OBJECTIVES: The main priority in mobile learning is to make learning elements as flexible as possible using differentforms of context data to extend the natural adaptation capabilities in mobile devices in order to engage learners inextremely rich environments.METHODS: In this paper, A context-aware MoBile LEarning framework is proposed, namely the AMBLE framework. Itprocesses contextual data at four distinct levels namely: Sensing Layer, Adaptation Layer, Context Processing Layer, andApplication Layer to perform adaptation of learning contents based on the actual environment and conditions of thelearner.RESULTS: Partial implementation of the proposed framework has the potential to capture and represent the physicalcontext information that may be used to perform a dynamic adaptation of learning contents and thus significantly improvethe mobile learning experiences. Extra work is expected regarding the implementation of the other layers and componentsof the framework including the user model, context manager, and the adaptation engine.CONCLUSION: The AMBLE framework proposes some relevant content adaptations with some positive results. Asfuture works, new forms of user-context adaptation synthesized with other extracted data sets of contextual informationwill be used to establish and align relevant dynamic adaptation and personalization of learning contents.

Abstract

Data simulation engines like Unity are becoming an increasingly important data source that allows us to acquire ground truth labels conveniently. Moreover, we can flexibly edit the content of an image in the engine, such as objects (position, orientation) and environments (illumination, occlusion). When using simulated data as training sets, its editable content can be leveraged to mimick the distribution of real-world data, and thus reduce the content difference between the synthetic and real domains. This paper explores content adaptation in the context of semantic segmentation, where the complex street scenes are fully synthesized using 19 classes of virtual objects from a first person driver perspective and controlled by 23 attributes. To optimize the attribute values and obtain a training set of similar content to real-world data, we propose a scalable discretizationand-relaxation (SDR) approach. Under a reinforcement learning framework, we formulate attribute optimization as a random-to-optimized mapping problem using a neural network. Our method has three characteristics. 1) Instead of editing attributes of individual objects, we focus on global attributes that have large influence on the scene structure, such as object density and illumination. 2) Attributes are quantized to discrete values, so as to reduce search space and training complexity. 3) Correlated attributes are jointly optimized in a group, so as to avoid meaningless scene structures and find better convergence points. Experiment shows our system can generate reasonable and useful scenes, from which we obtain promising real-world segmentation accuracy compared with existing synthetic training sets.

Abstract

Many multiplayer games offer their players different distinct roles to choose from. Especially cooperative games use roles, as these foster cooperation between the players. Due to the complexity of possible group compositions their choice however, is often limited, as specific key roles are required based on the presented challenge. This limitation can severely reduce player enjoyment if it prevents them from playing their favourite role. Manually adapting every challenge for every possible group composition is infeasible due to the high amount of group compositions and their role interactions. These aspects are particularly relevant in the context of game-based learning, when adapting content to the current group of players. To offer a feasible solution to the problem, this paper examines how player roles and interactions can be formalized and used in an automatic adaptation algorithm. Here, role properties and their interaction capabilities are used to achieve a balance against the game's tasks, which are adaptable parts of its content. This balance is modelled as an optimization problem, which allows for fast determination of a suitable content adaptation. The optimization problem can be solved using different approaches ranging from mathematical optimization to evolutionary algorithms depending on the given problem complexity. In order to go from a theoretical model to an applicable algorithm a set of distinct properties is chosen that suffices to model some of the most complex mechanics present in role-based multiplayer games showing the versatility of the developed adaptation model. This provides game designers using the adaptation model a toolbox for flexible content creation. This paper presents an adaptation system containing a mathematical formalization of player roles and game content as well as template modelling properties to assist in content creation. Abstract

Video transcoding is to create multiple representations of a video for content adaptation. It is deemed as a core technique in Adaptive BitRate (ABR) streaming. How to manage video transcoding affects the performance of ABR streaming in various aspects, including operational cost, streaming delays, Quality of Experience (QoE), etc. Therefore, the problems of implementing video transcoding in ABR streaming must be systematically studied for improving the overall performance of the streaming services. These problems become more worthy of investigation with the emergence of the edge-cloud continuum, which makes the resource allocation for video transcoding more complicated. To this end, this paper provides an investigation of the main technical problems related to video transcoding in ABR streaming, including designing a rate profile for video transcoding, providing resources for video transcoding in clouds, and caching multi-bitrate video contents in networks, etc. We analyze these problems from the perspective of resource allocation in the edge-cloud continuum and cast them into resource and Quality of Service (QoS) optimization problems. The goal is to minimize resource consumption while guaranteeing the QoS for ABR streaming. We also discuss some promising research directions for the ABR streaming services.

Abstract

An adapted ant colony algorithm is proposed to adapt e-content to learner’s profile. The pertinence of proposed units keeps learners motivated. A model of categorization of course’s units is presented. Two learning paths are discussed based on a predefined graph. In addition, the ant algorithm is simulated on the proposed model. The adapted algorithm requires a definition of a new pheromone which is a parameter responsible for defining whether the unit is in the right pedagogical sequence or in the wrong one. Moreover, it influences the calculation of quantity of pheromone deposited on each arc. Accordingly, results show that there are positive differences in learner’s passages to propose the suitable units depending on the sequence and the number of successes. The proposed units do not depend on the change of number of units around 10 to 30 units in the algorithm process.

Abstract

The continuous evolution of smart devices has led to serious limitations in multimedia applications. The multimedia graphic design and animation and the increased use of rich and complex multimedia content on the web or other media have all created a need to diversify the accessibility of the content. Therefore several techniques are used today to design a universally accessible content. The main techniques that are still used to maintain accessibility is to create two parallel streams of design and development of the same content. Thus, the continuous evolution will certainly lead to create other streams. For this, the automatic reasoning on multimedia to allow a computer to modify the design according to different variables, devices capabilities, user status and context to provide personalized adapted content. In this paper, we propose an abstract document model called XMS short for XML Multimedia Specification; it describes the composition of an original multimedia document and can be extended to any document type. We present how we may use spatial information present in this document to adapt and modify the original document. We mainly focus on the spatial aspect of a web document, a combination of RCC8, qualitative distances, and directions are used to describe the layout of a set of objects. The level of granularity of the definition of the objects defines the level of details that will be processed by our PROLOG based inference system, simplified versions of algorithms from the inference system and how it works on the spatial dimension of the document are shown. Abstract

In certain platforms, such as Google Docs, documents are adapted for specific mobile device types, and the installation of their applications is required. Although the documents can be accessed via Web browsers, their correctness is not guaranteed. In content selection, the document is adapted into various versions, from which the optimal one, based on a quality of experience (QoE) criterion, is delivered. Existing works evaluate the QoE of each content version using the user’s preferences and context parameters, such as device resolution and network bitrate. They ask the user to weight the context parameters, and then combine them using the simple-additive-weighting (SAW) method. However, not all users are familiar with the context parameters, and cannot understand their relationship with the requested content. Besides, not all parameters are compensatory to be summed up. In this paper, we propose a TOPSIS-based QoE model to address the two aforementioned drawbacks. We use the context parameters to define high-level functions understandable by all users, and combine them using the TOPSIS method. Experimental results show the convenience of our QoE model and its reliability over the SAW-based method, as well as the weighting-product (WP) method, which is used as an alternative to the SAW one.
