Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Quantized nano-objects offer a myriad of exciting possibilities for manipulating electrons and light that impact photonics, nanoelectronics, and quantum information. In this context, ultrashort laser pulses combined with nanotips and field emission have permitted renewing nano-characterization and control electron dynamics with unprecedented space and time resolution reaching femtosecond and even attosecond regimes. A crucial missing step in these experiments is that no signature of quantized energy levels has yet been observed. We combine in situ nanostructuration of nanotips and ultrashort laser pulse excitation to induce multiphoton excitation and electron emission from a single quantized nano-object attached at the apex of a metal nanotip. Femtosecond induced tunneling through well-defined localized confinement states that are tunable in energy is demonstrated. This paves the way for the development of ultrafast manipulation of electron emission from isolated nano-objects including stereographically fixed individual molecules and high brightness, ultrafast, coherent single electron sources for quantum optics experiments.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
We perform a post-compression of high energy pulses by using optical-field ionization of low pressure helium gas in a guided geometry. We apply this approach to a TW chirped-pulse-amplification based Ti:Sapphire laser chain and show that spectral broadening can be controlled both with the input pulse energy and gas pressure. Under optimized conditions, we generate 10 fs pulses at TW level directly under vacuum and demonstrate a high stability of the post compressed pulse duration. These high energy post-compressed pulses are thereafter used to perform high harmonic generation in a loose focusing geometry. The XUV beam is characterized both spatially and spectrally on a single shot basis and structured continuous XUV spectra are observed., Comment: This paper was submitted to Journal of the Optical Society of America B and is made available on arXiv with the permission of OSA (http://www.opticsinfobase.org/josab/home.cfm)

Physics - Plasma Physics ,Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
We report on the development of tunable few-cycle pulses with central wavelengths from 1.6 um to 2 um. Theses pulses were used as a proof of principle for high harmonic generation in atomic and molecular targets. In order to generate such pulses we produced a filament in a 4 bar krypton cell. Spectral broadening by a factor of 2 to 3 of a 40 fs near infrared input pulse was achieved. The spectrally broadened output pulses were then compressed by fused silica plates down to the few-cycle regime close to the Fourier limit. The auto-correlation of these pulses revealed durations of about 3 cycles for all investigated central wavelengths. Pulses with a central wavelength of 1.7 um and up to 430 uJ energy per pulse were employed to generate high order harmonics in Xe, Ar and N2. Moving to near infrared few-cycle pulses opens the possibility to operate deeply in the non-perturbative regime with a Keldysh parameter smaller than 1. Hence, this source is suitable for the study of the non-adiabatic tunneling regime in most generating systems used for high order harmonic generation and attoscience., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Event: SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics, 2023, Prague, Czech Republic; High-harmonic generation (HHG) in gaseous media is a workhorse tool in attosecond science. Its description origins from the microscopic scale of a single atom or molecule interacting with a driving IR-laser pulse. However, its practical realization usually employs a macroscopic volume of the gas. The macroscopic aspect aggregates all the microscopic emitters and brings novel physical mechanisms that drive the generation. One of the key mechanisms within the macroscopic scale is the shaping of the driving pulse due to the non-linear response of the medium. We present a comprehensive numerical model describing and coupling the physics on both scales. The model consists of different modules that provide different levels of approximation to choose an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational cost. We then use it to address two generation schemes, where we provide a detailed picture together with experimental realizations. The first scheme uses a long medium homogeneously pre-ionized by an electrical discharge to optimize the phase-matching of the harmonic signal. This scheme allows, in particular, for optimizing HHG in long media where the control is difficult because the driving pulse undergoes strong reshaping and defocusing due to the non-linear response after the entrance to the medium. The second scheme introduces a mechanism to control the divergence of the harmonic beam in thin targets. The divergence is driven by shaping the wavefront of the driving pulse. This allows for spectrally selective focusing of the harmonic beams without the use of optics, which leads to inevitable losses in the XUV region.

TERAHERTZ spectroscopy ,MOLECULAR spectroscopy ,ELECTRIC fields - Abstract
Two-color air plasma-based broadband terahertz (THz) generation and subsequent air-biased coherent detection (ABCD) of the THz field are presented. Both source and detection systems are characterized experimentally and numerically, yielding excellent agreement of measured and simulated signals. We reveal that it is crucial to model the whole optical setup and include the various pump distortions, like temporal and spatial walk-off as well as ellipticity of polarization, in order to interpret the experimental measurements correctly. Moreover, it turns out that geometrical effects in the ABCD scheme shape the recorded THz spectra and need to be taken into account. We confirm that THz electric fields with peak amplitude in the MV/cm range and large spectral bandwidth are produced, allowing us to demonstrate THz spectroscopy with molecular samples. Background: The frequency of late-onset Huntington's disease (>59 years) is assumed to be low and the clinical course milder. However, previous literature on late-onset disease is scarce and inconclusive. Objective: Our aim is to study clinical characteristics of late-onset compared to common-onset HD patients in a large cohort of HD patients from the Registry database. Methods: Participants with late- and common-onset (30–50 years)were compared for first clinical symptoms, disease progression, CAG repeat size and family history. Participants with a missing CAG repeat size, a repeat size of ≤35 or a UHDRS motor score of ≤5 were excluded. Results: Of 6007 eligible participants, 687 had late-onset (11.4%) and 3216 (53.5%) common-onset HD. Late-onset (n = 577) had significantly more gait and balance problems as first symptom compared to common-onset (n = 2408) (P

- Abstract
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for depression but how it achieves its clinical effects remains unclear. We set out to study the brain's response to ECT from a large-scale brain-network perspective. Using a voxelwise analysis, we looked at resting-state functional connectivity before and after a course of ECT at the whole-brain and the between- and within-network levels in 17 patients with a depressive episode. Using a group-independent component analysis approach, we focused on four networks known to be affected in depression: the salience network (SN), the default mode network (DMN), the cognitive executive network (CEN), and a subcortical network (SCN). Our clinical measures included mood, cognition, and psychomotor symptoms. We found ECT to have increased the connectivity of the left CEN with the left angular gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus as well as its within-network connectivity. Both the right CEN and the SCN showed increased connectivity with the precuneus and the anterior DMN with the left amygdala. Finally, improvement of psychomotor retardation was positively correlated with an increase of within-posterior DMN connectivity. The limitations of our study include its small sample size and the lack of a control dataset to confirm our findings. Our voxelwise data demonstrate that ECT induces a significant increase of connectivity across the whole brain and at the within-network level. Furthermore, we provide the first evidence on the association between an increase of within-posterior DMN connectivity and an improvement of psychomotor retardation, a core symptom of depression.

- Abstract
Prior studies suggest that IL-6 may be involved in the pathophysiology of psychomotor symptoms in depression. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), as yet the most effective biological treatment of severe depression, is known to improve psychomotor functioning, while recent studies have shown a decrease in the elevated IL-6 levels of depressed patients following ECT. This study investigates whether the improvement in psychomotor functions in patients with depression after ECT is related to changes in IL-6 levels. Peripheral IL-6 was quantified and the severity of psychomotor agitation and retardation determined using the CORE assessment of psychomotor symptoms in 62 patients with a (unipolar or bipolar) depressive episode within one week before and within one week after their course of ECT. IL-6 levels had decreased significantly following ECT and both psychomotor retardation and agitation had improved. The decrease in IL-6 levels was related to the improvement of psychomotor retardation, with post-hoc analysis revealing that higher baseline IL-6 levels positively correlated with higher psychomotor retardation scores. With this study, we provide the first evidence that the improvement of psychomotor retardation after ECT for depression is related to the immunomodulatory properties of the treatment, most specifically the decrease in IL-6 levels.

- Abstract
Background The deficit in social cognition in schizophrenia has been demonstrated in numerous studies and metaanalyses. However, previous studies have focused on a group evaluation of social cognition, without exploring interindividual and intergroup variations on populations of different cultures. In addition, the international literature is focused on data from industrialized countries. In Africa, and particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, there are no data. Methods We conducted case-control studies of 60 and 58 subjects respectively in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Belgium to determine the variability of performance in social cognition evaluated by the ClaCos, in its various components, between subjects of different cultures (patients and healthy controls Belgians and Congolese) and within the Belgian and Congolese groups. The ClaCos explores the areas of social cognition described by Green et al., 2008 : the TREF (facial emotion recognition test) for emotional perception, PerSo for social Perception and social Knowledge, MASC (Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition) for Theory of Mind and AIHQ for Attribution Style. This battery also allows the evaluation of empathy performance by the QCAE and subjective abilities in social cognition by the ACSO. Results The results of the recognition of emotions among schizophrenic patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) (GMB Kitoko et al., 2019) and the social perception and social knowledge of schizophrenic patients in Belgium (GMB Kitoko et al., 2020) have been published in the form of V articles in scientific journals. Overall, patients with schizophrenia showed impaired and heterogeneous performance in all social cognition assessment tasks, within each group and between groups in two countries. Social cognitive abilities were partially independent from patients' neurocognitive abilities, and clinical symptoms. In both groups, patients showed deficits in facial emotion recognition. - Abstract

- Abstract
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective biological treatment for depression. Aside the well-known therapeutic effect on mood symptoms, it has also a unique positive impact on psychomotor agitation and retardation, which are core symptoms of depression. The neurobiology behind these effects, however, remains unclear. The basal ganglia are proposed to be important regions in the pathogenesis of psychomotor symptoms in depression. Since ECT can trigger neuroplasticity in these subcortical nuclei, we speculate that ECT-induced volumetric changes of the basal ganglia will positively influence psychomotor symptoms. Psychomotor symptoms were analyzed in 17 patients with severe depression before and after an acute ECT course using a CORE assessment of the retardation, agitation, and non-interaction domains. The volumes of the caudate, putamen, pallidum, and accumbens regions were determined using magnetic resonance imaging one week before and after ECT. Psychomotor functions had improved significantly after ECT and significant volume increases were found for the accumbens region, the putamen, and pallidum. The volume increase of the nucleus accumbens correlated with an improvement of psychomotor retardation, while the volume increase of the pallidum correlated negatively with an improvement of the agitation subscore. Our findings support the notion of an association between the impact of ECT on depression-related psychomotor symptoms and volume increases of the accumbens region and pallidum, pointing to the importance of the basal ganglia in the therapeutic effect of ECT on psychomotor functioning.

- Abstract
Deficits in social perception and knowledge and their negative impact on social functioning, have been repeatedly reported among patients with schizophrenia. However, earlier studies have focused on an overall assessment of social perception and social knowledge, without exploring their sub-components nor the interindividual variation of the deficit. This study aims to refine the exploration of this deficit and to assess its interindividual variation. Twenty-nine patients with schizophrenia and 24 healthy controls, matched for age and gender, completed a validated and integrated social perception and knowledge task (i.e. the PerSo test). Patients with schizophrenia had reduced performance in all PerSo subtests, namely contextual fluency, interpretation and social convention. However, these deficits were not correlated with the severity of clinical symptoms, and individual profiles analyses showed a marked heterogeneity among patients on their abilities. Our study confirms the existence of deficits in social perception and knowledge and underlines their considerable heterogeneity. Therefore, it is necessary to test and rehabilitate individually social perception and knowledge.

The promulgation of the Fifth Lateran Council decree 'Apostolici regiminis' (1513) traditionally is understood as having been motivated by opposition to teachings on the soul, taught by Pietro Pomponazzi and certain secular Aristotelian philosophers of the day. The decree is also construed as representing the Catholic Church's formal dogmatic declaration of the individual immortality of the rational soul. This article argues that while Pomponazzi and his colleagues are likely to have been the decree's primary antagonists, 'Apostolici regiminis' is not a dogmatic declaration on immortality but rather a dogmatic condemnation of the so-called doctrine of the double truth. Building upon this notion, the article proposes certain revisions to the traditional understanding of the decree and its historical context.
