PSI-MI has been endorsed by the protein informatics community as a standard XML data exchange format for protein-protein interaction datasets. While many public databases support the standard, there is a degree of heterogeneity in the way the proposed XML schema is interpreted and instantiated by different data providers. Analysis of schema instantiation in large collections of XML data is a challenging task that is unsupported by existing tools.

34. An Empirical Analysis of GraphQL API Schemas in Open Code Repositories and Package Registries

Abstract

GraphQL is a query language for APIs that has been increasingly adopted by web developers since its specification was open sourced in 2015. The GraphQL framework lets API clients tailor data requests by using queries that return JSON objects described using GraphQL Schema. We present initial results of an exploratory empirical study with the goal of characterizing GraphQL Schemas in open code repositories and package registries. Our first approach identifies over 20 thousand GraphQL-related projects in publically accessible repositories hosted by GitHub. Our second, and complementary, approach uses package registries to select 30 GraphQL “reference” packages (the ones with the highest dependency counts), and then finds their 90 thousand dependent packages (and the related repositories in GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket). In addition, over 2 thousand schema files were loaded into the GraphQL.js reference implementation to conduct a detailed analysis of the schema information. Abstract

The increasing number of Knowledge Graphs (KGs) available today calls for powerful query languages that can strike a balance between expressiveness and complexity of query evaluation, and that can be easily integrated into existing query processing infrastructures. We present Extended Property Paths (EPPs), a significant enhancement of Property Paths (PPs), the navigational core included in the SPARQL query language. We introduce the EPPs syntax, which allows to capture in a succinct way a larger class of navigational queries than PPs and other navigational extensions of SPARQL, and provide formal semantics. We describe a translation from non-recursive EPPs (nEPPs) into SPARQL queries and provide novel expressiveness results about the capability of SPARQL sub-languages to express navigational queries. We prove that the language of EPPs is more expressive than that of PPs; using EPPs within SPARQL allows to express things that cannot be expressed when only using PPs. We also study the expressiveness of SPARQL with EPPs in terms of reasoning capabilities. We show that SPARQL with EPPs is expressive enough to capture the main RDFS reasoning functionalities and describe how a query can be rewritten into another query enhanced with reasoning capabilities. We complement our contributions with an implementation of EPPs as the SPARQL-independent iEPPs language and an implementation of the translation of nEPPs into SPARQL queries. What sets our approach apart from previous research on querying KGs is the possibility to evaluate both nEPPs and SPARQL with nEPPs queries under the RDFS entailment regime on existing query processors. Abstract

Extensive microarray experimental data is available online, facilitating independent evaluation of experimentconclusions and enabling reuse. Numerous microarray experiment datasets are published using the MAGE-MLXML schema but assessing the quality of published experiments still represents a challenging task since there is noconsensus among microarray users on a framework to measure datasets quality.In this paper, we apply techniques based on DescribeX that quantitatively and qualitatively analyze MAGE-MLpublic collections, gaining insights about schema evolution. Our case study shows that DescribeX is a useful tool forthe evaluation of microarray experiment data quality that enhances the understanding of the instance-level structure ofMAGE-ML datasets and its evolution.

Abstract

This poster presents a novel way to represent user navigation in XML retrieval using collection statistics from XML summaries. Currently, developing user navigation models in XML retrieval is costly and the models are specific to collected user assessments. We address this problem by proposing summary navigation models which describe user navigation in terms of XML summaries. We develop our proposal using assessments collected in the interactive track at INEX 2006. Our preliminary results suggest that summary navigation models can represent user navigation in a way that is e ective for evaluation and allows economic re-use of assessments for new tasks and collections.
