Search

With the ever increasing beam power at particle accelerator-based facilities for nuclear and particle physics, radioactive isotope production, and nuclear engineering, targets that can withstand this power, and shielding of secondary particles are becoming increasingly important. Here we present Monte Carlo (MC) calculations using the well-established Geant4 software to optimise and predict the antineutrino yield of a $^8$Li Decay-At-Rest (DAR) source. The source relies on 600~kW of beam power from a continuous wave proton beam impinging on a beryllium target, where spallation neutrons capture on $^7$Li to produce the $^8$Li. We further present an in-depth treatment of the neutron shielding surrounding this target. We show that we can produce the high antineutrino flux needed for the discovery-level experiment IsoDAR, searching for ``sterile'' neutrinos (predicted new fundamental particles) and other beyond standard model physics, while maintaining a neutron flux in the detector that is below natural backgrounds. The methods presented in this paper are easily transferable to other high-power targets and their associated shielding.

This study presents a comprehensive model for neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections spanning energies from 50 GeV to 5$\times10^{12}$ GeV with an emphasis on applications to neutrino telescopes. We provide calculations of the total charged-current DIS cross sections and inelasticity distributions up to NNLO for isoscalar nucleon targets and up to NLO order for nuclear targets. Several modifications to the structure functions are applied to improve the modeling of the cross sections at low energies where perturbative QCD is less accurate and at high energies where there is non-negligible top quark production, and small-$x$ logarithms need to be resumed. Using the FONLL general-mass variable-flavor number scheme, we account for heavy quark mass effects and separate the heavy flavor components of the structure functions, obtaining predictions of their relative contributions to the cross sections and the uncertainties arising from the parton distribution functions. Additionally, the effects of final state radiation are implemented in the calculation of the double-differential cross section and discussed in terms of their impact on measurements at neutrino telescopes., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, and 12 tables. This Preliminary Design Report (PDR) describes the IsoDAR electron-antineutrino source. Volumes I and II are site-independent and describe the cyclotron driver providing a 10~mA proton beam, and the medium energy beam transport line and target, respectively. Volume III describes the installation at the Yemilab underground laboratory in South Korea. The IsoDAR driver and target will produce a mole of electron-antineutrinos over the course of five years. Paired with a kton-scale liquid scintillator detector, it will enable an impressive particle physics program including searches for new symmetries, new interactions and new particles. Here in Volume I, we describe the driver, which includes the ion source, low energy beam transport, and cyclotron. The demand for underground labs for neutrino and rare event search experiments has been increasing over the last few decades. Yemilab, constructed in October 2022, is the first deep ($\sim$1~km) underground lab dedicated to science in Korea, where a large cylindrical cavern (D: 20~m, H: 20~m) was excavated in addition to the main caverns and halls. The large cavern could be utilized for a low background neutrino experiment by a liquid scintillator-based detector (LSC) where a 2.26 kiloton LS target would be filled. It's timely to have such a large but ultra-pure LS detector after the shutdown of the Borexino experiment so that solar neutrinos can be measured much more precisely. Interesting BSM physics searches can be also pursued with this detector when it's combined with an electron linac, a proton cyclotron (IsoDAR source), or a radioactive source. The MicroBooNE experiment searched for an excess of electron-neutrinos in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), providing direct constraints on $\nu_e$-interpretations of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess (LEE). In this article, we show that if the MiniBooNE LEE is caused instead by an excess of $\overline{\nu}_e$, then liquid argon detectors, such as MicroBooNE, SBND and ICARUS, would have poor sensitivity to it. This is due to a strong suppression of $\overline{\nu}_e -{}^{40}$Ar cross sections in the low-energy region of the excess. The MicroBooNE results are consistent at the $2\sigma$~C.L with a scenario in which the MiniBooNE excess is sourced entirely by $\overline{\nu}_e$ interactions. The opportune location of ANNIE, a Gd-loaded water Cherenkov detector, allows for a direct search for a $\overline{\nu}_e$ flux excess in the BNB using inverse-beta-decay events., Comment: 12+4 pages, 7+4 figures

Radio-Frequency Quadrupoles (RFQs) are multi-purpose linear particle accelerators that simultaneously bunch and accelerate charged particle beams. They are ubiquitous in accelerator physics, especially as injectors to higher-energy machines, owing to their impressive efficiency. The design and optimization of these devices can be lengthy due to the need to repeatedly perform high-fidelity simulations. Several recent papers have demonstrated that machine learning can be used to build surrogate models (fast-executing replacements of computationally costly beam simulations) for order-of-magnitude computing time speedups. However, while these pilot studies are encouraging, there is room to improve their predictive accuracy. Particularly, beam summary statistics such as emittances (an important figure of merit in particle accelerator physics) have historically been challenging to predict. For the first time, we present a surrogate model trained on 200,000 samples that yields <6% mean average percent error for the predictions of all relevant beam output parameters, solving the problem of poor emittance predictions by identifying and including hidden variables which were not accounted for previously. These surrogate models were made possible by using the Julia language and GPU computing; we briefly discuss both. We demonstrate the utility of surrogate modeling by performing a multi-objective optimization using our best model as a callback in the objective function to select an optimal RFQ design. We consider trade-offs in RFQ performance for various choices of Pareto-optimal design variables: common issues for any multi-objective optimization scheme. Lastly, we make recommendations for input data preparation, selection, and neural network architectures that pave the way for future development of production-capable surrogate models for RFQs and other particle accelerators.

Searches for axion-like particles (ALPs) are motivated by the strong CP problem in particle physics and by unexplained dark matter in astrophysics. In this letter, we discuss novel ALP searches using monoenergetic nuclear de-excitation photons from a beam dump, using IsoDAR as an example. We show that IsoDAR can set limits that close a gap in traditional QCD axion searches using the ALP-photon coupling, as well as provide sensitivity to large regions of new parameter space in models where ALPs couple to nucleons and electrons. An array of powerful neutrino-beam experiments will study the fundamental properties of neutrinos with unprecedented precision in the coming years. Along with their primary neutrino-physics motivations, there has been growing recognition that these experiments can carry out a rich program of searches for new, light, weakly-coupled particles that are part of a dark sector. In this white paper, we review the diverse theoretical motivations for dark sectors and the capabilities of neutrino beam experiments to probe a wide range of models and signatures. We revisit models of heavy neutral leptons (neutrissimos) with transition magnetic moments as explanations of the $4.8\sigma$ excess of electron-like events at MiniBooNE. We perform a detailed Monte Carlo-based analysis to re-examine the preferred regions in the model parameter space to explain MiniBooNE, considering also potential contributions from oscillations due to an eV-scale sterile neutrino. We then derive robust constraints on the model using neutrino-electron elastic scattering data from MINERvA. We find that MINERvA rules out a large region of parameter space, but allowed solutions exist at the $2\sigma$ confidence level. A dedicated MINERvA analysis would likely be able to probe the entire region of preference of MiniBooNE in this model., Comment: 14 pages

IsoDAR@Yemilab is a novel isotope-decay-at-rest experiment that has preliminary approval to run at the Yemi underground laboratory (Yemilab) in Jeongseon-gun, South Korea. In this technical report, we describe in detail the considerations for installing this compact particle accelerator and neutrino target system at the Yemilab underground facility. Specifically, we describe the caverns being prepared for IsoDAR, and address installation, hielding, and utilities requirements. To give context and for completeness, we also briefly describe the physics opportunities of the IsoDAR neutrino source when paired with the Liquid Scintillator Counter (LSC) at Yemilab, and review the technical design of the neutrino source., Comment: Under review at JINST. We present a novel machine learning-based approach to generate fast-executing virtual radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) particle accelerators using surrogate modelling. These could potentially be used as on-line feedback tools during beam commissioning and operation, and to optimize the RFQ beam dynamics design prior to construction. Since surrogate models execute orders of magnitude faster than corresponding physics beam dynamics simulations using standard tools like PARMTEQM and RFQGen, the computational complexity of the multi-objective optimization problem reduces significantly. Ultimately, this presents a computationally inexpensive and time efficient method to perform sensitivity studies and an optimization of the crucial RFQ beam output parameters like transmission and emittances. Two different methods of surrogate model creation (polynomial chaos expansion and neural networks) are discussed and the achieved model accuracy is evaluated for different study cases with gradually increasing complexity, ranging from a simple FODO cell example to the full RFQ optimization. We find that variations of the beam input Twiss parameters can be reproduced well. The prediction of the beam with respect to hardware changes, e.g. of the electrode modulation, are challenging on the other hand. We discuss possible reasons.

Neutrino telescopes provide strong sensitivity to sterile neutrino oscillations through matter-enhanced oscillation, occurring in the few TeV energy range for eV$^{2}$-scale neutrino mass-squared splittings. Prior searches have focused on $\nu_\mu$ disappearance, which has a particularly strong sensitivity to the mixing angle $\theta_{24}$ via $\nu_\mu\rightarrow\nu_s$ transitions. Nowadays, the $\nu_\mu\rightarrow\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu\rightarrow\nu_\tau$ appearance channels have been considered less promising at neutrino telescopes, due in part to the much smaller target volume for cascades relative to tracks. This work explores the detectability of these signatures at neutrino telescopes given present constraints on sterile neutrino mixing, and as an example, forecasts the sensitivity of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory to the mixing angles $\theta_{14}$, $\theta_{24}$, and $\theta_{34}$ in the 3+1 sterile neutrino model using the cascade channel with ten years of data. We find that $\nu_\tau$ appearance signatures consistent with the existing IceCube $\nu_\mu$ disappearance best-fit point are discoverable for values of $\theta_{34}$ consistent with world constraints, and that the sterile neutrino parameters favored by the BEST and gallium anomalies are expected to be testable at the 95\% confidence level., Comment: Implemented reviewer comments. When electrons with energies of $O(100)$ MeV pass through a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC), they deposit energy in the form of electromagnetic showers. Methods to reconstruct the energy of these showers in LArTPCs often rely on the combination of a clustering algorithm and a linear calibration between the shower energy and charge contained in the cluster. This reconstruction process could be improved through the use of a convolutional neural network (CNN). Here we discuss the performance of various CNN-based models on simulated LArTPC images, and then compare the best performing models to a typical linear calibration algorithm. We show that the CNN method is able to address inefficiencies caused by unresponsive wires in LArTPCs and reconstruct a larger fraction of imperfect events to within 5% accuracy compared with the linear algorithm., Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables

Many Beyond-Standard Model physics signatures are enhanced in high-energy neutrino interactions. To explore these signatures, ultra-large Cherenkov detectors such as IceCube exploit event samples with charged current muon neutrino interactions > 1 TeV. Most of these interactions occur below the detector volume, and produce muons that enter the detector. However, the large spacing between detectors leads to inefficiency for measuring muons with energies below or near the critical energy of 400 GeV. In response, IceCube has built a densely instrumented region within the larger detector. This provides large samples of well-reconstructed interactions that are contained within the densely instrumented region, extending up to energies of ~50 GeV. This leaves a gap of relatively unexplored atmospheric-neutrino events with energies between 50 GeV and 1 TeV in the ultra-large detectors. In this paper we point out that interesting Beyond Standard Model signatures may appear in this energy window, and that early running of the DUNE far detectors can give insight into new physics that may appear in this range., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

The electron-like excess observed by the MiniBooNE experiment is explained with a model comprising a new low mass state ($\mathcal{O}(1)$ eV) participating in neutrino oscillations and a new high mass state ($\mathcal{O}(100)$ MeV) that decays to $\nu+\gamma$. Short-baseline oscillation data sets are used to predict the oscillation parameters. Fitting the MiniBooNE energy and scattering angle data, there is a narrow joint allowed region for the decay contribution at 95% CL. The result is a substantial improvement over the single sterile neutrino oscillation model, with $\Delta \chi^2/dof$ = 19.3/2 for a decay coupling of $2.8 \times 10^{-7}$ GeV$^{-1}$, high mass state of 376 MeV, oscillation mixing angle of $7\times 10^{-4}$ and mass splitting of $1.3$ eV$^2$. This model predicts that no clear oscillation signature will be observed in the FNAL short baseline program due to the low signal-level., Comment: 16 pages

There is great need for high intensity proton beams from compact particle accelerators in particle physics, medical isotope production, and materials- and energy-research. To address this need, we present, for the first time, a design for a compact isochronous cyclotron that will be able to deliver 10 mA of 60 MeV protons - an order of magnitude higher than on-market compact cyclotrons and a factor four higher than research machines. A key breakthrough is that vortex motion is incorporated in the design of a cyclotron, leading to clean extraction. Beam losses on the septa of the electrostatic extraction channels stay below 50 W (a factor four below the required safety limit), while maintaining good beam quality. We present a set of highly accurate particle-in-cell simulations, and an uncertainty quantification of select beam input parameters using machine learning, showing the robustness of the design. Recently, the use of $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ ions instead of protons to overcome space charge challenges in compact cyclotrons has received much attention. This technique has the potential to increase the available beam current from compact cyclotrons by an order of magnitude, paving the way for applications in energy research, medical isotope production, and particle physics, e.g. a decisive search for sterile neutrinos through the IsoDAR experiment. For IsoDAR we go a step beyond just using $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ and add pre-bunching through a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) embedded in the cyclotron yoke. This puts beam purity and beam quality constraints on the ion source that no published ion source has simultaneously demonstrated so far. Here, we report results from a new multicusp ion source (MIST-1) that produces the world's highest steady-state current of $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ from this type of ion source (1 mA), with exceptionally low emittance (0.05 $\pi$-mm-mrad, RMS, normalized) and high purity (80% $\mathrm{H}_2^+$). This result shows the feasibility of using a multicusp ion source for IsoDAR and the RFQ direct injection prototype, and paves the way to record breaking continuous wave (cw) beam currents of 5 mA $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ (equivalent to 10 mA protons) from compact cyclotrons, ideal for underground installation. The IsoDAR sterile-neutrino search requires a very high intensity neutrino source. For IsoDAR, this high intensity is produced using the high neutron flux from a 60 MeV, 10 mA proton beam striking a beryllium target that floods a sleeve of highly-enriched Li-7. Through neutron capture the Li-7 is transmuted to Li-8, which beta-decays giving the desired high neutrino flux for very-short baseline neutrino experiments. The target can be placed very close to can existing large neutrino detector, which is typically located deep underground to reduce backgrounds. With such a setup, it is necessary to design a shielding enclosure for the target to prevent neutrons from causing unacceptable activation of the rock walls close to the target. Various materials have been studied including steel to thermalize the high energy neutrons and two new types of concrete developed by Jefferson Laboratory, one very light with shredded plastic aggregate, and the other one enriched with high quantities of boron. The shielding is asymmetrical, having a larger thickness towards the detector in order to suppress the neutron and gamma background in the neutrino detector. Simulation results for rock activation and for detector backgrounds are presented.

The past few years have seen a renewed interest in the search for light particle dark matter. ABRACADABRA is a new experimental program to search for axion dark matter over a broad range of masses, $10^{-12}\lesssim m_a\lesssim10^{-6}$ eV. ABRACADABRA-10 cm is a small-scale prototype for a future detector that could be sensitive to QCD axion couplings. In this paper, we present the details of the design, construction, and data analysis for the first axion dark matter search with the ABRACADABRA-10 cm detector. We include a detailed discussion of the statistical techniques used to extract the limit from the first result with an emphasis on creating a robust statistical footing for interpreting those limits., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

IsoDAR is an experiment under development to search for sterile neutrinos using the isotope Decay-At-Rest (DAR) production mechanism, where protons impinging on $^9$Be create neutrons which capture on $^7$Li which then beta-decays producing $\bar{\nu}_e$. As this will be an isotropic source of $\bar{\nu}_e$, the primary driver current must be large (10 mA cw) for IsoDAR to have sufficient statistics to be conclusive within 5 years of running. H$_2^+$ was chosen as primary ion to overcome some of the space-charge limitations during low energy beam transport and injection into a compact cyclotron. The H$_2^+$ will be stripped into protons before the target. At MIT, a multicusp ion source (MIST-1) was designed and built to produce a high intensity beam with a high H$_2^+$ fraction. MIST-1 is now operational at the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) at MIT and under commissioning.

The axion is a promising dark matter candidate, which was originally proposed to solve the strong-CP problem in particle physics. To date, the available parameter space for axion and axion-like particle dark matter is relatively unexplored, particularly at masses $m_a\lesssim1\,\mu$eV. ABRACADABRA is a new experimental program to search for axion dark matter over a broad range of masses, $10^{-12}\lesssim m_a\lesssim10^{-6}$ eV. ABRACADABRA-10 cm is a small-scale prototype for a future detector that could be sensitive to the QCD axion. In this Letter, we present the first results from a 1 month search for axions with ABRACADABRA-10 cm. We find no evidence for axion-like cosmic dark matter and set 95% C.L. upper limits on the axion-photon coupling between $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<1.4\times10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<3.3\times10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$ over the mass range $3.1\times10^{-10}$ eV - $8.3\times10^{-9}$ eV. Transitions between low-lying electron states in atoms of heavy elements lead to electromagnetic radiation with discrete energies between about 0.1~keV and 100~keV (x rays) that are characteristic of the element. Moseley's law --- an empirical relation first described by Moseley in 1913 which supported predictions of the then-new Bohr model of atomic energy levels while simultaneously identifying the integer atomic number $Z$ as the measure of nuclear charge --- predicts that the energy of these characteristic x rays scales as $Z^2$. The foundational nature of Moseley's experiment has led to the popularity of Moseley's law measurements in undergraduate advanced laboratory physics courses. We report here observations of deviations from Moseley's law in the characteristic $K_{\alpha}$ x-ray emission of 13 elements ranging from $Z=29$ to $Z=92$. %: Cu, Rb, Mo, Ag, In, Ba, Tb, Ta, W, Pb, Au, Pt, and U. While following the square-law predictions of the Bohr model fairly well at low $Z$, the deviations become larger with increasing $Z$ (negligible probability of the Bohr model fitting data by a $\chi^2$ test). We find that relativistic models of atomic structure are necessary to fit the full range of atomic numbers observed (probability value of $0.20$ for the relativistic Bohr-Sommerfeld model). As has been argued by previous authors, measurements of the relativistic deviations from Moseley's law are both pedagogically valuable at the advanced laboratory level and accessible with modern but modest apparatus. Here, we show that this pedagogical value can be be extended even further --- to higher $Z$ elements, where the effects are more dramatically observable --- using apparatus which is enhanced relative to more modest versions, but nevertheless still accessible for many teaching laboratories.

The IsoDAR collaboration is developing a high-current cyclotron for a neutrino search experiment. Designed to deliver 10 mA of 60 MeV protons, the current and power of this cyclotron far exceed those of existing accelerators, opening new possibilities for the production of radiopharmaceutical isotopes, producing very high-activity samples in very short times. The cyclotron can also be easily configured to deliver ions other than protons including 1 mA of alpha particles at 240 MeV: this flexibility gives a broad reach into new areas of isotope production. In recent years, the interest in high intensity proton beams in excess of several milli-Amperes has risen. Potential applications are in neutrino physics, materials and energy research, and isotope production. Continuous wave proton beams of five to ten milli-Amperes are now in reach due to advances in accelerator technology and through improved understanding of the beam dynamics. As an example application, we present the proposed IsoDAR experiment, a search for so-called sterile neutrinos and non-standard interaction using the KamLAND detector located in Japan. We present updated sensitivities for this experiment and describe in detail the design of the high intensity proton driver that uses several novel ideas. These are: accelerating H2+ instead of protons, directly injecting beam into the cyclotron via a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), and carefully matching the beam to achieve so-called vortex motion. The preliminary design holds up well in PIC simulation studies and the injector system is now being constructed, to be commissioned with a 1 MeV test cyclotron.

The focus of this paper is on optimizing the electron-antineutrino source for the IsoDAR (Isotope Decay at Rest) experimental program. IsoDAR will perform sensitive short-baseline neutrino oscillation and electroweak measurements, among other Beyond Standard Model searches, in combination with KamLAND and/or other suitable detectors. IsoDAR will rely on the high-$Q$ $\beta^-$ decay of the $^{8}$Li isotope for producing electron-antineutrinos, created mainly via neutron capture in an isotopically enriched $^{7}$Li sleeve surrounding the Be target. In particular, this paper examines the performance, defined in terms of absolute $^{8}$Li (or, equivalently, electron-antineutrino) production rate, of various candidate sleeve materials, including a lithium-fluoride, beryllium-fluoride mixture ("FLiBe") sleeve and a homogeneous mixture of lithium and beryllium ("Li-Be"). These studies show that the $^{8}$Li yield can be increased substantially by employing a Li-Be sleeve and therefore motivate significant changes to the nominal IsoDAR design., Comment: 9 pages

The CosmicWatch Desktop Muon Detector is a self-contained, hand-held cosmic ray muon detector that is valuable for astro/particle physics research applications and outreach. The material cost of each detector is under $100 and it takes a novice student approximately four hours to build their first detector. The detectors are powered via a USB connection and the data can either be recorded directly to a computer or to a microSD card. Arduino- and Python-based software is provided to operate the detector and an online application to plot the data in real-time. We study the phenomenology of neutrino decay together with neutrino oscillations in the context of eV-scale sterile neutrinos. We review the formalism of visible neutrino decay in which one of the decay products is a neutrino that potentially can be observed. We apply the formalism developed for decay to the recent sterile neutrino search performed by IceCube with TeV neutrinos. We show that for $\nu_4$ lifetime $\tau_4/m_4 \lesssim 10^{-16} {\rm eV^{-1}s}$, the interpretation of the high-energy IceCube analysis can be significantly changed., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Current and future neutrino experiments can be used to discover dark matter, not only in searches for dark matter annihilating to neutrinos, but also in scenarios where dark matter itself scatters off Standard Model particles in the detector. In this work, we study the sensitivity of different neutrino detectors to a class of models called boosted dark matter, in which a subdominant component of a dark sector acquires a large Lorentz boost today through annihilation of a dominant component in a dark matter-dense region, such as the galactic center or dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This analysis focuses on the sensitivity of different neutrino detectors, specifically the Cherenkov-based Super-K and the future argon-based DUNE to boosted dark matter that scatters off electrons. We study the dependence of the expected limits on the experimental features, such as energy threshold, volume and exposure in the limit of constant scattering amplitude. This paper describes an undergraduate-level physics project that incorporates various aspects of machine- and electronics-shop technical development. The desktop muon detector is a self-contained apparatus that employs plastic scintillator as a detection medium and a silicon photomultiplier for light collection. This document addresses concerns raised about possible limits, due to space charge, to the maximum H2+ ion beam current that can be injected into and accepted by a compact cyclotron. The discussion of the compact cyclotron is primarily within the context of the proposed DAEdALUS and IsoDAR neutrino experiments. These concerns are examined by the collaboration and addressed individually. While some of the concerns are valid, and present serious challenges to the proposed program, the collaboration sees no immediate showstoppers. However, some of the issues raised clearly need to be addressed carefully--analytically, through simulation, and through experiments. In this report, the matter is discussed, references are given to work already done and future plans are outlined.

The short baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, KPipe, is designed to perform a sensitive search for muon neutrino disappearance in the current global fit allowed regions for sterile neutrinos. KPipe is to be located at the Material Life Science Experimental Facility at J-PARC: the world's most intense source of 236~MeV, monoenergetic muon neutrinos. By measuring the $\nu_\mu$ charged current interaction rate along a 120~m long, 3~m diameter detector, KPipe can map out short baseline oscillations over an L/E of 0.14 to 0.64~m/MeV. Using a long, single detector to measure the $\nu_\mu$ interaction rate as a function of distance largely eliminates the systematic uncertainties associated with cross sections and fluxes. This technical report reviews the tests performed at the Best Cyclotron Systems, Inc. facility in regards to developing a cost effective ion source, beam line transport system, and acceleration system capable of high H$_2^+$ current output for the IsoDAR (Isotope Decay At Rest) experiment. We begin by outlining the requirements for the IsoDAR experiment then provide overview of the Versatile Ion Source, Low Energy Beam Transport system, spiral inflector, and cyclotron. The experimental measurements are then discussed and the results are compared with a thorough set of simulation studies. Of particular importance we note that the Versatile Ion Source (VIS) proved to be a reliable ion source capable of generating a large amount of H$_2^+$ current. The results suggest that with further upgrades, the VIS could potentially be a suitable candidate for IsoDAR. The conclusion outlines the key results from our tests and introduces the forthcoming work this technical report has motivated.

IsoDAR is a novel experiment designed to measure neutrino oscillations through $\bar{\nu}_e$ disappearance, thus providing a definitive search for sterile neutrinos. In order to generate the necessary anti-neutrino flux, a high intensity primary proton beam is needed. In IsoDAR, $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ is accelerated and is stripped into protons just before the target, to overcome space charge issues at injection. As part of the design, we have refined an old proposal to use an RFQ to axially inject bunched $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ ions into the driver cyclotron. This method has several advantages over a classical low energy beam transport (LEBT) design: (1) The bunching efficiency is higher than for the previously considered two-gap buncher and thus the overall injection efficiency is higher. This relaxes the constraints on the $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ current required from the ion source. (2) The overall length of the LEBT can be reduced. (3) The RFQ can also accelerate the ions. This enables the ion source platform high voltage to be reduced from 70 kV to 15 kV, making underground installation easier. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\bar\nu$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. The MiniBooNE Experiment has contributed substantially to beyond standard model searches in the neutrino sector. The experiment was originally designed to test the $\Delta m^2$~1 eV$^2$ region of the sterile neutrino hypothesis by observing $\nu_e$ ($\bar\nu_e$) charged current quasi-elastic signals from a $\nu_\mu$ ($\bar\nu_\mu$) beam. MiniBooNE observed excesses of $\nu_e$ and $\bar\nu_e$-candidate events in neutrino and anti-neutrino mode, respectively. To date, these excesses have not been explained within the neutrino Standard Model ($\nu$SM), the Standard Model extended for three massive neutrinos. Confirmation is required by future experiments such as MicroBooNE. MiniBooNE also provided an opportunity for precision studies of Lorentz violation. The results set strict limits for the first time on several parameters of the Standard Model-Extension, the generic formalism for considering Lorentz violation. Most recently, an extension to MiniBooNE running, with a beam tuned in beam-dump mode, is being performed to search for dark sector particles. The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program of exciting science. This paper reviews the results of the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments. The primary goal of each experiment was to effect sensitive searches for neutrino oscillations in the mass region with $\Delta m^2 \sim 1$ eV$^2$. The two experiments are complementary, and so the comparison of results can bring additional information with respect to models with sterile neutrinos. Both experiments obtained evidence for $\bar \nu_\mu \rightarrow \bar \nu_e$ oscillations, and MiniBooNE also observed a $\nu_\mu \rightarrow \nu_e$ excess. In this paper, we review the design, analysis, and results from these experiments. We then consider the results within the global context of sterile neutrino oscillation models. The final data sets require a more extended model than the simple single sterile neutrino model imagined at the time that LSND drew to a close and MiniBooNE began. We show that there are apparent incompatibilities between data sets in models with two sterile neutrinos. However, these incompatibilities may be explained with variations within the systematic error. Lithium 8 is a short lived beta emitter producing a high energy anti-neutrino, which is very suitable for making several measurements of fundamental quantities. It is proposed to produce Lithium 8 with a commercially available 60 MeV cyclotron using protons or alpha particles on a Beryllium 9 target. We have used the GEANT4 program to model these processes, and calculate the anti-neutrino fluxes that could be obtained in a practical system. DAE\delta ALUS, the Decay At-rest Experiment for \delta_{CP} at a Laboratory for Underground Science will look for evidence of CP-violation in the neutrino sector, an ingredient in theories that seek to explain the matter/antimatter asymmetry in our universe. It will make a precision measurement of the oscillations of muon antineutrinos to electron antineutrinos using multiple neutrino sources created by low-cost compact cyclotrons. The experiment utilizes decay-at-rest neutrino beams produced by 800 MeV protons impinging a beam target of graphite and copper. Two well established Monte Carlo codes, MARS and GEANT4, have been used to optimise the design and the performance of the target. DAEdALUS is an experiment to measure the CP-violation angle in the neutrino sector by producing multiple, intense beams of neutrinos from pion- and muon-decays-at-rest near an ultra-large water Cerenkov detector. In this talk, a design for the proposed Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory in the U.S. was presented. DAEdALUS will be statistics-limited and have different systematic errors than long baseline CP-violation searches. When the data from both searches are combined, the sensitivity exceeds proton-driver designs. An ultra-large Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber-based neutrino detector will have the uncommon ability to detect atmospheric tau neutrino events. This paper discusses the most promising modes for identifying charged current tau neutrino interactions, and shows that, with simple kinematic cuts, ~30 tau neutrinos can be isolated in a 100 kt*yr exposure, with greater than 4 sigma significance. This sample is sufficient to perform flux-averaged total cross-section and cross-section shape parameterization measurements -- the first steps toward using tau neutrinos to search for physics beyond the Standard Model., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures
