Abstract

ABSTRACT: We review developments in conducting inference for model parameters in the presence of intertemporal and cross‐sectional dependence with an emphasis on panel data applications. We review the use of heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent (HAC) standard error estimators, which include the standard clustered and multiway clustered estimators, and discuss alternative sample‐splitting inference procedures, such as the Fama–Macbeth procedure, within this context. We outline pros and cons of the different procedures. We then illustrate the properties of the discussed procedures within a simulation experiment designed to mimic the type of firm‐level panel data that might be encountered in accounting and finance applications. Our conclusion, based on theoretical properties and simulation performance, is that sample‐splitting procedures with suitably chosen splits are the most likely to deliver robust inferential statements with approximately correct coverage properties in the types of large, heterogeneous panels many researchers are likely to face. Abstract

Metadata only record Beginning in the 1990s, the Eastern Region of Ghana has transitioned from production of local foodstuffs to commercial production of pineapple for export to Europe. The economic changes caused by this shift are influenced by a number of factors. These include the social networks concerned with capital, information, and influence. Interviews, agricultural activity questionnaires, modules, soil fertility analyses, GIS mapping of fields, and plot history and rights questionnaires were administered to sixty couples or triples in four different villages and used to uncover the connections within the villages. The authors acknowledge the limits of the questionnaires for this task and suggest the use of an equilibrium model of multi-dimensional network formation in future research.

A number of major challenges in completing the 1.6 km Domain tunnel and 3.4 km Burnley tunnel included much higher groundwater infiltration than expected, hydrostatic pressures greater than 6 bar, and unique design and construction applications required to prepare the tunnels for service. 41. Mutations affecting induction of glycolytic and fermentative genes during germination and environmental stresses in Arabidopsis.

Abstract

Expression of the alcohol dehydrogenase gene (ADH) of Arabidopsis is known to be induced by environmental stresses and regulated developmentally. We used a negative-selection approach to isolate mutants that were defective in regulating the expression of the ADH gene during seed germination; we then characterized three recessive mutants, aar1-1, aar1-2, and aar2-1, which belong to two complementation groups. In addition to their defects during seed germination, mutations in the AAR1 and AAR2 genes also affected anoxic and hypoxic induction of ADH and other glycolytic genes in mature plants. The aar1 and aar2 mutants were also defective in responding to cold and osmotic stress. The two allelic mutants aar1-1and aar1-2 exhibited different phenotypes under cold and osmotic stresses. Based on our results we propose that these mutants are defective in a late step of the signaling pathways that lead to increased expression of the ADH gene and glycolytic genes.

42. Non-classical inhibition of uricase by cyanide

Abstract

The interactions of Aspergillus flavus uricase with the substrates O2 and urate and the inhibitors xanthine, cyanide, periodate and hydroxylamine were investigated. Under equilibrium conditions O2 does not bind directly to the enzyme, and the absence of O2 had no effect on either the binding stoicheiometry or binding constant for xanthine, as measured by equilibrium dialysis and microcalorimetry. Cyanide, periodate and hydroxylamine inhibit uricase in a non-classical manner. A decrease in initial velocity to a steady-state inhibited velocity can be observed on a time scale of minutes. The time-dependence, which is unaltered by prior incubation with the inhibitors, is consistent with a first-order transition. Rate constants for induction of inhibition are linearly dependent on inhibitor concentration, but independent of urate and O2 concentrations. Radioactively labelled urate forms a stable but reversible complex with uricase in the presence of cyanide and O2. These results were used to deduce the nature of enzyme-bound intermediates and thus for the proposal of a novel mechanism for cyanide inhibition.

43. Thermodynamics and stoicheiometry of the binding of substrate analogues to uricase

Abstract

The subunit composition, metal content, substrate-analogue binding and thermal stability of Aspergillus flavus uricase were determined. A. flavus uricase is a tetramer and contains no copper, iron or any other common prosthetic group. Analytical-gel-filtration and equilibrium-dialysis experiments showed one binding site per subunit for urate analogues. The free energy of xanthine binding was −30.5 kJ (-7.3 kcal)/mol of subunit by equilibrium dialysis and −30.1 kJ (-7.2 kcal)/mol of subunit by microcalorimetry. The enthalpy change for xanthine binding was −15.9 kJ (-3.8 kcal)/mol of subunit when determined from the temperature-dependence of the equilibrium constant and −18.0 kJ (-4.3 kcal)/mol of subunit when measured microcalorimetrically. The thermal inactivation rate of A. flavus uricase increases as protein concentration is decreased. This concentration-dependent instability is not due to subunit dissociation.

44. Seawater Hydraulics: Development and Evaluation of an Experimental Diver Tool System.

Abstract

The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory has developed a diver-operated hydraulic tool system that uses seawater as the working fluid. The tool system consists of a diesel-driven hydraulic power source, a rotary impact wrench, and a rotary propeller cleaning brush. The rotary impact wrench is powered by an improved 3-hp reversible vane motor; the propeller cleaning brush is powered by a unidirectional vane motor. Both motors effectively provided power to perform the intended tasks. After 200 hours of operation, the reversible motor provided 3 hp of output at greater than 70% overall efficiency. Vane springs failed and were replaced after operating for 100 hours. The impact wrench delivered over 1,100 ft-lb of torque to a 1-inch-diam bolt in less than 7 seconds when used by a diver. Preliminary diver tests showed that the propeller cleaning brush functioned exceptionally well. The diesel driven power source can deliver seawater at 12 gpm and 2,000 psi. This report presents the results of the test and evaluation of this experimental tool system.

Abstract

Project RED LAMP consists of a series of launchings of sounding rockets with chemical payloads. The rockets are launched at the Eastern Test Range for the purpose of (a) Calibrating radio-frequency research instrumentation which is being used to study rocket phenomena. (b) Determining the position, growth and intensity of rocketgenerated shock waves. (c) Defining the electron density gradients of the shock wave. The report consists of two papers concerning results from two RED LAMP launches during May 1964. The first paper is concerned with the interpretation of radio and optical measurements of these two launches in terms of a spherical expansion of a blast wave. The second paper is concerned with the analogy between spherical and cylindrical explosions at ionospheric altitudes and the relation between point TNT explosions and a rocket plume. (Author)
