Following the upgrades to Advanced LIGO (aLIGO), measurements were made of the detector suspensions' frequency response characteristics. While most resonant frequencies could be identified with simple mechanical models, such as the fiber vibration modes, some were unexplained. Using a finite element model of the quadruple pendulum suspension, we search for and identify lines from unknown sources. The present work focuses on two resonant lines observed in the Upper Intermediate Mass as examples of this technique. Our simulations suggest a common source for these lines, which could be accounted for in a redesign. By modeling these response frequencies, we can examine the motion of individual components, and suggest methods to reduce their amplitude, alter their frequency, or eliminate them in future gravitational wave detector designs.

We describe a Simplified Gravitational Reference Sensor (S-GRS), an ultra-precise inertial sensor for future Earth geodesy missions. These sensors are used to measure or compensate for all non-gravitational accelerations of the host spacecraft so that they can be removed in the data analysis to recover spacecraft motion due to Earth's gravity field, which is the main science observable. Low-low satellite-to-satellite tracking missions like GRACE-FO that utilize laser ranging interferometers are technologically limited by the acceleration noise performance of their electrostatic accelerometers, in addition to temporal aliasing associated with Earth's dynamic gravity field. The S-GRS is estimated to be at least 40 times more sensitive than the GRACE accelerometers and more than 500 times more sensitive if operated on a drag-compensated platform. The improved performance is enabled by increasing the mass of the sensor's test mass, increasing the gap between the test mass and its electrode housing, removing the small grounding wire used in the GRACE accelerometers and replacing them with a UV LED-based charge management system. This level of improvement allows future missions to fully take advantage of the sensitivity of the GRACE-FO laser Ranging Interferometer in the gravity recovery analysis. The S-GRS concept is a simplified version of the flight-proven LISA Pathfinder GRS. Our performance estimates are based on models vetted during the LISA Pathfinder flight and the expected Earth orbiting spacecraft environment based on flight data from GRACE-FO. The relatively low volume, mass, and a power consumption enables use of the S-GRS on ESPA-class microsatellites, reducing launch costs or enabling larger numbers of satellite pairs to be utilized to improve the temporal resolution of Earth gravity field maps., Comment: Corrected typos, clarified some sentences, and added references

Most existing algorithms for automatic 3D morphometry of human brain MRI scans are designed for data with near-isotropic voxels at approximately 1 mm resolution, and frequently have contrast constraints as well - typically requiring T1 scans (e.g., MP-RAGE). This limitation prevents the analysis of millions of MRI scans acquired with large inter-slice spacing ("thick slice") in clinical settings every year. The inability to quantitatively analyze these scans hinders the adoption of quantitative neuroimaging in healthcare, and precludes research studies that could attain huge sample sizes and hence greatly improve our understanding of the human brain. Recent advances in CNNs are producing outstanding results in super-resolution and contrast synthesis of MRI. However, these approaches are very sensitive to the contrast, resolution and orientation of the input images, and thus do not generalize to diverse clinical acquisition protocols - even within sites. Here we present SynthSR, a method to train a CNN that receives one or more thick-slice scans with different contrast, resolution and orientation, and produces an isotropic scan of canonical contrast (typically a 1 mm MP-RAGE). The presented method does not require any preprocessing, e.g., skull stripping or bias field correction. Crucially, SynthSR trains on synthetic input images generated from 3D segmentations, and can thus be used to train CNNs for any combination of contrasts, resolutions and orientations without high-resolution training data. We test the images generated with SynthSR in an array of common downstream analyses, and show that they can be reliably used for subcortical segmentation and volumetry, image registration (e.g., for tensor-based morphometry), and, if some image quality requirements are met, even cortical thickness morphometry. Electrostatic charge control of isolated free-falling test masses is a key enabling technology for space-based gravitational missions. Contact-free electrostatic charge control can be achieved using photoelectron emission from metal surfaces under illumination with deep UV light. A contact-free method minimizes force disturbances that can perturb measurements or interrupt science operations. In this paper we present charge control experiments using a gravitational reference sensor geometry relevant to the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) gravitational wave observatory in a torsion pendulum apparatus. We use a UV LED light source to control the test mass potential, taking advantage of their high bandwidth to phase-lock the light output to 100kHz electric fields used for capacitive position sensing of the test mass. We demonstrate charge-rate and test mass potential control by adjustment of the phase of the light with respect to the electric field. We present a simple physics-based model of the discharging process which explains our experimental results in terms of the UV light distribution in the sensor, surface work functions and quantum yields. A robust fitting method is used to determine the best-fit physical parameters of the model that describe the system

Harnessing the sheer discovery potential of gravitational wave astronomy will require bold, deliberate, and sustained efforts to train and develop the requisite workforce. The next decade requires a strategic plan to build -- from the ground up -- a robust, open, and well-connected gravitational wave astronomy community with deep participation from traditional astronomers, physicists, data scientists, and instrumentalists. This basic infrastructure is sorely needed as an enabling foundation for research. We outline a set of recommendations for funding agencies, universities, and professional societies to help build a thriving, diverse, and inclusive new field.

The presence of free charge on isolated proof-masses, such as those within space-borne gravitational reference sensors, causes a number of spurious forces which will give rise to associated acceleration noise. A complete discusssion of each charge induced force and its linear acceleration noise is presented. The resulting charge acceleration noise contributions to the LISA mission are evaluated using the LISA Pathfinder performance and design. It is shown that one term is largely dominant but that a full budget should be maintained for LISA and future missions due to the large number of possible contributions and their dependence on different sensor parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will open three decades of gravitational wave (GW) spectrum between 0.1 and 100 mHz, the mHz band. This band is expected to be the richest part of the GW spectrum, in types of sources, numbers of sources, signal-to-noise ratios and discovery potential. When LISA opens the low-frequency window of the gravitational wave spectrum, around 2034, the surge of gravitational-wave astronomy will strongly compel a subsequent mission to further explore the frequency bands of the GW spectrum that can only be accessed from space. The 2020s is the time to start developing technology and studying mission concepts for a large-scale mission to be launched in the 2040s. The mission concept would then be proposed to Astro2030. Only space based missions can access the GW spectrum between 10 nHz and 1 Hz because of the Earths seismic noise. This white paper surveys the science in this band and mission concepts that could accomplish that science. The proposed small scale activity is a technology development program that would support a range of concepts and a mission concept study to choose a specific mission concept for Astro2030. We propose an experiment, the Cosmic Accelerometer, designed to yield velocity precision of $\leq 1$ cm/s with measurement stability over years to decades. The first-phase Cosmic Accelerometer, which is at the scale of the Astro2020 Small programs, will be ideal for precision radial velocity measurements of terrestrial exoplanets in the Habitable Zone of Sun-like stars. At the same time, this experiment will serve as the technical pathfinder and facility core for a second-phase larger facility at the Medium scale, which can provide a significant detection of cosmological redshift drift on a 6-year timescale. This larger facility will naturally provide further detection/study of Earth twin planet systems as part of its external calibration process. This experiment is fundamentally enabled by a novel low-cost telescope technology called PolyOculus, which harnesses recent advances in commercial off the shelf equipment (telescopes, CCD cameras, and control computers) combined with a novel optical architecture to produce telescope collecting areas equivalent to standard telescopes with large mirror diameters. Combining a PolyOculus array with an actively-stabilized high-precision radial velocity spectrograph provides a unique facility with novel calibration features to achieve the performance requirements for the Cosmic Accelerometer., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures; Submitted as an Astro 2020 Decadal Survey Project White Paper

The first terrestrial gravitational wave interferometers have dramatically underscored the scientific value of observing the Universe through an entirely different window, and of folding this new channel of information with traditional astronomical data for a multimessenger view. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will broaden the reach of gravitational wave astronomy by conducting the first survey of the millihertz gravitational wave sky, detecting tens of thousands of individual astrophysical sources ranging from white-dwarf binaries in our own galaxy to mergers of massive black holes at redshifts extending beyond the epoch of reionization. These observations will inform - and transform - our understanding of the end state of stellar evolution, massive black hole birth, and the co-evolution of galaxies and black holes through cosmic time. Nearly a century after the discovery that we live in an expanding Universe, and two decades after the discovery of accelerating cosmic expansion, there remains no direct detection of this acceleration via redshift drift - a change in the cosmological expansion velocity versus time. Because cosmological redshift drift directly determines the Hubble parameter H(z), it is arguably the cleanest possible measurement of the expansion history, and has the potential to constrain dark energy models (e.g. Kim et al. 2015). The challenge is that the signal is small - the best observational constraint presently has an uncertainty several orders of magnitude larger than the expected signal (Darling 2012). Nonetheless, direct detection of redshift drift is becoming feasible, with upcoming facilities such as the ESO-ELT and SKA projecting possible detection within two to three decades. This timescale is uncomfortably long given the potential of this cosmological test. With dedicated experiments it should be possible to rapidly accelerate progress and detect redshift drift with only a five-year observational baseline. Coalescing, massive black-hole (MBH) binaries are the most powerful sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Universe, which makes MBH science a prime focus for ongoing and upcoming GW observatories. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) -- a gigameter scale space-based GW observatory -- will grant us access to an immense cosmological volume, revealing MBHs merging when the first cosmic structures assembled in the Dark Ages. LISA will unveil the yet unknown origin of the first quasars, and detect the teeming population of MBHs of $10^4 - 10^7$ solar masses. forming within protogalactic halos. The Pulsar Timing Array, a galactic-scale GW survey, can access the largest MBHs the Universe, detecting the cosmic GW foreground from inspiraling MBH binaries of about 10^9 solar masses. LISA can measure MBH spins and masses with precision far exceeding that from electromagnetic (EM) probes, and together, both GW observatories will provide the first full census of binary MBHs, and their orbital dynamics, across cosmic time. Detecting the loud gravitational signal of these MBH binaries will also trigger alerts for EM counterpart searches, from decades (PTAs) to hours (LISA) prior to the final merger. By witnessing both the GW and EM signals of MBH mergers, precious information will be gathered about the rich and complex environment in the aftermath of a galaxy collision. Neutron star mergers, referring to both binary neutron star and neutron star black hole mergers, are the canonical multimessenger events. They have been detected across the electromagnetic spectrum, have recently been detected in gravitational waves, and are likely to produce neutrinos over several decades in energy. The non-thermal prompt and afterglow emission of short gamma-ray bursts and the quasi-thermal emission from the radioactively powered kilonovae provide distinct insights into the physics of neutron star mergers. When combined with direct information on coalescence from gravitational waves and neutrinos these sources may become the best understood astrophysical transients. Multimessenger observations of these cataclysmic events will determine sources of gravitational waves and astrophysical neutrinos, enable precision cosmology, and unique tests of fundamental physics, the origin of heavy elements, the behavior of relativistic jets, and the equation of state of supranuclear matter. Following the selection of The Gravitational Universe by ESA, and the successful flight of LISA Pathfinder, the LISA Consortium now proposes a 4 year mission in response to ESA's call for missions for L3. The observatory will be based on three arms with six active laser links, between three identical spacecraft in a triangular formation separated by 2.5 million km. LISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using Gravitational Waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. It provides the closest ever view of the infant Universe at TeV energy scales, has known sources in the form of verification binaries in the Milky Way, and can probe the entire Universe, from its smallest scales near the horizons of black holes, all the way to cosmological scales. The LISA mission will scan the entire sky as it follows behind the Earth in its orbit, obtaining both polarisations of the Gravitational Waves simultaneously, and will measure source parameters with astrophysically relevant sensitivity in a band from below $10^{-4}\,$Hz to above $10^{-1}\,$Hz., Comment: Submitted to ESA on January 13th in response to the call for missions for the L3 slot in the Cosmic Vision Programme

We report on the design and sensitivity of a new torsion pendulum for measuring the performance of ultra-precise inertial sensors and for the development of associated technologies for space-based gravitational wave observatories and geodesy missions. The apparatus comprises a 1 m-long, 50 um-diameter, tungsten fiber that supports an inertial member inside a vacuum system. The inertial member is an aluminum crossbar with four hollow cubic test masses at each end. This structure converts the rotation of the torsion pendulum into translation of the test masses. Two test masses are enclosed in capacitive sensors which provide readout and actuation. These test masses are electrically insulated from the rest of the cross-bar and their electrical charge is controlled by photoemission using fiber-coupled ultraviolet light emitting diodes. The capacitive readout measures the test mass displacement with a broadband sensitivity of 30 nm / sqrt(Hz), and is complemented by a laser interferometer with a sensitivity of about 0.5 nm / sqrt(Hz). The performance of the pendulum, as determined by the measured residual torque noise and expressed in terms of equivalent force acting on a single test mass, is roughly 200 fN / sqrt(Hz) around 2 mHz, which is about a factor of 20 above the thermal noise limit of the fiber.

A Drag-Free CubeSat mission has been proposed to demonstrate the feasibility of a Gravitational Reference Sensor (GRS) with an optical readout for a 3 units (3U) spacecraft. A purely drag-free object is defined by the absence of all external forces other than gravity, which are shielded by the spacecraft. In a real case, the TM will still be affected by disturbances. Several of them are passively reduced by the design of the TM housing. This system is a thick-walled aluminium box that holds the shadow sensors and shields the TM. The housing has an effect on the mechanical, thermal and magnetic environment around the TM. All of them have been analysed. The mechanical vibrations have to fit the launch environment and the modes have to be outside of the measurement range (0.0001 - 1 Hz). The magnetic field has to be reduced by a 0.01 factor. The temperature difference between internal opposing surfaces, determining pressure on the TM, has to be below 10^-3(1 mHz/f)1/3 K Hz^-1/2. The housing, together with the TM, the sensors and the UV LEDs for charging control, constitutes the GRS, which would then fit into a 1U. The other 2Us are occupied by the caging mechanism that constraints the TM during launch, the thrusters, the Attitude Determination And Control System (ADACS) and the electronics. The Drag-Free CubeSat will be the result of the combined efforts of Stanford, University of Florida, KACST and NASA and will be the first drag-free mission with an optical readout and the first GRS designed within the limits of a 3U small satellite. In the first section, this paper briefly updates on the main characteristics and systems of the project. A drift mode accelerometer is a precision device that overcomes the much of the acceleration noise and readout dynamic range limitations of traditional electrostatic accelerometers. It has the potential of achieving acceleration noise performance of drag-free systems over a restricted frequency band without the need for external drag-free control or spacecraft propulsion. Like traditional accelerometers, the drift mode accelerometer contains a high-density test mass surrounded by an electrode housing, which can control and sense all six degrees of freedom of the test mass. Unlike traditional accelerometers, the suspension system is operated with a low duty cycle so that the limiting suspension force noise only acts over brief, known time intervals, which can be neglected in the data analysis. The readout is performed using a laser interferometer which is immune to the dynamic range limitations of even the best voltage references typically used to determine the inertial acceleration of electrostatic accelerometers. The drift mode accelerometer is related to the like-named operational mode of the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft, which will be used to estimate the acceleration noise associated with the LISA Pathfinder front end electronics. This paper describes operation of such a device, develops models for its performance with respect to satellite geodesy and gravitational wave astrophysics applications, and discusses methods for testing its performance using torsion pendula in the laboratory and the LISA Pathfinder mission in space.

Precise control over the potential of an electrically isolated proof mass is necessary for the operation of devices such as a Gravitational Reference Sensor (GRS) and satellite missions such as LISA. We show that AlGaN UV LEDs operating at 255 nm are an effective substitute for Mercury vapor lamps used in previous missions because of their ability to withstand space qualification levels of vibration and thermal cycling. After 27 thermal and thermal vacuum cycles and 9 minutes of 14.07 g RMS vibration, there is less than 3% change in current draw, less than 15% change in optical power, and no change in spectral peak or FWHM (full width at half maximum). We also demonstrate UV LED stimulated photoemission from a wide variety of thin film carbide proof mass coating candidates (SiC, Mo2C, TaC, TiC, ZrC) that were applied using electron beam evaporation on an Aluminum 6061-T6 substrate. All tested carbide films have measured quantum efficiencies of 3.8-6.8*10^-7 and reflectivities of 0.11-0.15, which compare favorably with the properties of previously used gold films. We demonstrate the ability to control proof mass potential on an 89 mm diameter spherical proof mass over a 20 mm gap in a GRS-like configuration. Proof mass potential was measured via a non-contact DC probe, which would allow control without introducing dynamic forcing of the spacecraft. Finally we provide a look ahead to an upcoming technology demonstration mission of UV LEDs and future applications toward charge control of electrically isolated proof masses., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures
