1. New records of coniferous species (Gymnospermae, Pinidae) for the non-native woody flora of Tunisia and North Africa.

Abstract

Ten new taxa of gymnosperms are added to the non-indigenous woody flora of Tunisia, after almost two decades of botanical surveys. Four of them (Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus brutia var. pityusa, Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca, Taxodium distichum var. distichum) are also new for the flora of North Africa. Pinus coulteri is here first reported for the Mediterranean Basin. Three genera (Cryptomeria, Pseudotsuga and Taxodium) are firstly recorded for the non-native vascular flora of Africa whereas two genera (Cedrus and Platycladus) are reported for the first time only for the woody flora of Tunisia. Brief descriptions together with filed photographs, global distributions and habitats at national scale are provided. 3. Taxonomic and geographic variation of the Pinus mugo complex on chloroplast microsatellite markers.

Abstract

The high mountain plants of Central and Southern Europe survived the glacial periods in the same mountain ridges, but at lower altitudes and possibly covering larger areas than during interglacials. This implies a high level of species differentiation between isolated mountain ridges.Pinus mugocomplex, which includesP. mugo s.s.(Alps, Sudetes, Carpathians, Dynaric Alps, and Rhodopes),P. uncinata(Pyrenees and Alps), andP. uliginosa(Sudetes and neighbouring mountain ridges) is a good group to examine such a scenario. We screened 44 populations across the geographic range of the complex, using 10 cpSSR markers to study (1) taxonomic relations amongP. mugo s.s.,P. uncinata, andP. uliginosaand (2) genetic and phylogeographic structure inP. mugo s.s.andP. uncinata. Allelic combinations of 87 size variants produced a total of 757 haplotypes. Haplotypic diversity was high and similar in every species (0.997, 0.986 and 0.991, respectively). The highest divergence between haplotypes was observed inP. uliginosa(= 10.29). The AMOVA revealed that most of the overall genetic variation is explained by the within-population component (FST= 0.121,RST= 0.206) and by the geography (FCT= 0.056,RCT= 0.083). The differentiation betweenP. mugo s.s.,P. uncinata, andP. uliginosais explained by about 5% (P<0.001) of the total variation. Vicariant gene pools for the complex were identified in the Pyrenees, the Alps with the Tatra Mts, the Sudetes, and the East and South Carpathians along with the Balkan Mountains. The phylogeographic structure was observed inP. mugo s.l.,P. mugo s.s., andP. uncinata.Results support the separate taxonomic status ofP. uncinataandP. mugo s.s.and possible hybrid origin ofP. uliginosa. 4. BIOECOLOGY OF DIORYCTRIA ABIETELLA DENIS AND SCHIFF. A PEST OF CONIFERS IN THE NORTH-WESTERN HIMALAYA

Abstract

Cones and seeds of conifers, such as Pinus roxburghii, P. wallichiana, P. gerardiana, Cedrus deodara, Abies pindrow and Picea smithiana are seriously damaged by Dioryctria abietella Denis and Schiff. (Lepidoptera : Pyralidae) in the North-Western Himalayan region of India. Bioecological studies carried out during 1991 - '92 revealed that the females laid whitish, elliptical eggs singly on the depressed surface of the young cones. The average egg size was 1.00 ± 0.11 x 0.60 ±0.08 mm and this stage lasted for 3 - 5 days. The larval stage passed through five instars. All the instars differed in appearance, size and duration and larvae became full-fed in an average of 24.8 ± 1.9 days. The full-fed larva spun a cocoon around itself, sealed it with white papery membrane and pupated inside the cone or any other outside protected place. The prepupal and pupal periods lasted for 7-8 and 10-14 days, respectively. The pupa was dark brown, 13.8 ± 0.07 mm in length. Total period from egg to adult varied from 46 to 59 days (52.7 ±4.8 days). Adults were dirty brown in appearance and were 13.59±0.115 mm long with an average wing expanse of 29.0 ± 1.00 mm. They lived for 4 to 5 days. Under laboratory conditions, the pest completed two generations per year and full-fed larvae of 3rd generation overwintered during September - October. Two larval parasites belonging to order Hymenoptera and Diptera, and a fungal pathogen (Fusarium sp.) were found associated with this pest. The detailed biology, nature and extent of damage, along with its distribution have been discussed and methods of control suggested.
