Search

The Orion Molecular Cloud complex, one of the nearest (D = 406 pc) and most extensively studied massive star-forming regions, is ideal for constraining the physics of stellar feedback, but its ~12 deg diameter on the sky requires a dedicated approach to mapping ionized gas structures within and around the nebula. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is a new optical integral field unit (IFU) that will map the ionized gas within the Milky Way and Local Group galaxies, covering 4300 deg^2 of the sky with the new LVM Instrument. We showcase optical emission line maps from LVM covering 12 deg^2 inside of the Orion belt region, with 195,000 individual spectra combined to produce images at 0.07 pc (35.3") resolution. This is the largest IFU map made (to date) of the Milky Way, and contains well-known nebulae (the Horsehead Nebula, Flame Nebula, IC 434, and IC 432), as well as ionized interfaces with the neighboring dense Orion B molecular cloud. We resolve the ionization structure of each nebula, and map the increase in both the [SII]/Ha and [NII]/Ha line ratios at the outskirts of nebulae and along the ionization front with Orion B. [OIII] line emission is only spatially resolved within the center of the Flame Nebula and IC 434, and our ~0.1 pc scale line ratio diagrams show how variations in these diagnostics are lost as we move from the resolved to the integrated view of each nebula. We detect ionized gas emission associated with the dusty bow wave driven ahead of the star sigma Orionis, where the stellar wind interacts with the ambient interstellar medium. The Horsehead Nebula is seen as a dark occlusion of the bright surrounding photo-disassociation region. We studied seven nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies in $J$- and $Ks$-bands with redshifts varying from 0.019 to 0.092. This is the first multi-source study targeting the hosts of southern NLS1 galaxies. Our data was obtained with the FourStar instrument of the 6.5~m Magellan Baade telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory (Chile). The aim of our study is to determine the host galaxy morphologies of these sources by using GALFIT. We were able to model six out of the seven sources reliably. Our conclusion is that all of the reliably modelled sources are disk-like galaxies, either spirals or lenticulars. None of these sources present elliptical morphology. Our findings are in agreement with the hypothesis that disk-like galaxies are the main host of jetted NLS1 galaxies. Taking advantage of observations in two bands, we also produced a $J - Ks$ colour map of each source. Five of the six colour maps show significant dust extinction near the core of the galaxy -- a feature often seen in gamma-ray-detected jetted NLS1 galaxies, and interpreted to be a consequence of a past minor merger.

IGR J17407-2808 is an enigmatic and poorly studied X-ray binary that was recently observed quasi-simultaneously with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton. In this paper we report the results of this observational campaign. During the first 60 ks of observation, the source was caught in a relatively low emission state, characterised by a modest variability and an average flux of ~8.3E-13 erg/cm^2/s (4-60 keV). Afterwards, IGR J17407-2808 entered a significantly more active emission state that persisted for the remaining ~40 ks of the NuSTAR observation. During this state, IGR J17407-2808 displayed several fast X-ray flares, featuring durations of ~1-100 s and profiles with either single or multiple peaks. The source flux in the flaring state reached values as high as 2E-9 erg/cm^2/s (4-60 keV), leading to a measured dynamic range during the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton campaign of >~ 10^3. We also analysed available archival photometric near-infrared data of IGR J17407-2808 to improve the constraints available so far on the the nature of the donor star hosted in this system. Our analysis shows that the donor star can be either a rare K or M-type sub-subgiant or an K type main sequence star, or sub-giant star. Our findings support the classification of IGR J17407-2808 as a low-mass X-ray binary. PKS 2004-447 is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) harbouring a relativistic jet with gamma-ray emission. On 2019-10-25, the Fermi-Large Area Telescope captured a $\gamma$-ray flare from this source, offering a chance to study the broad-line region (BLR) and jet during such violent events. This can provide insights to the BLR structure and jet interactions, which are important for active galactic nuclei and host galaxy coevolution. We report X-Shooter observations of enhancements in the broad line components of Balmer, Paschen and He I lines seen only during the post-flare and vanishing 1.5 years after. These features are biased redward up to $\sim$250 km s$^{-1}$ and are narrower than the pre-existing broad line profiles. This indicates a connection between the relativistic jet and the BLR of a young AGN, and how $\gamma$-ray production can lead to localised addition of broad emission lines., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, including appendix. Ionized nebulae provide critical insights into the conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM). Their bright emission lines enable the measurement of physical properties, such as the gas-phase metallicity, across galaxy disks and in distant galaxies. The PHANGS--MUSE survey has produced optical spectroscopic coverage of the central star-forming discs of 19 nearby main-sequence galaxies. Here, we use the H{\alpha} morphology from this data to identify 30,790 distinct nebulae, finding thousands of nebulae per galaxy. For each nebula, we extract emission line fluxes and, using diagnostic line ratios, identify the dominant excitation mechanism. A total of 23,244 nebulae (75%) are classified as HII regions. The dust attenuation of every nebulae is characterised via the Balmer decrement and we use existing environmental masks to identify their large scale galactic environment (centre, bar, arm, interarm and disc). Using strong-line prescriptions, we measure the gas-phase oxygen abundances (metallicity) and ionization parameter for all HII regions. With this new catalogue, we measure the radial metallicity gradients and explore second order metallicity variations within each galaxy. By quantifying the global scatter in metallicity per galaxy, we find a weak negative correlation with global star formation rate and stronger negative correlation with global gas velocity dispersion (in both ionized and molecular gas). One of the fundamental factors regulating the evolution of galaxies is stellar feedback. However, we still do not have strong observational constraints on the relative importance of the different feedback mechanisms (e.g. radiation, ionised gas pressure, stellar winds) in driving HII region evolution and molecular cloud disruption. In this letter, we constrain the relative importance of the various feedback mechanisms from young massive star populations by resolving HII regions across the disk of the nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 1672. We combine measurements of ionised gas nebular lines obtained by PHANGS-MUSE, with high-resolution imaging from the HST in both the narrow-band H{\alpha} and broad-band filters. We identify a sample of 40 isolated, compact HII regions in the HST H{\alpha} image, for which we measure the sizes that were previously unresolved in seeing-limited ground-based observations. Additionally, we identify the ionisation source(s) for each HII region from catalogues produced as part of the PHANGS-HST survey. We find that the HII regions investigated are mildly dominated by thermal or wind pressure, yet their elevation above the radiation pressure is within the expected uncertainty range. We see that radiation pressure provides a substantially higher contribution to the total pressure than previously found in the literature over similar size scales. In general, we find higher pressures within more compact HII regions, which is driven by the inherent size scaling relations of each pressure term, albeit with significant scatter introduced by the variation in the stellar population properties (e.g. luminosity, mass, age, metallicity). Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a peculiar subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). They have demonstrated that the presence of relativistic jets in an AGN is not strictly related to its radio-loudness, the black hole mass, or the host galaxy type. Here we present a remarkable example of a radio-quiet NLS1, 6dFGS gJ035432.8-134008 (J0354-1340). In our Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations at 5.5 GHz the source shows a bright core with a flat spectral index, and extended emission corresponding to very elongated jets. These are the largest double-sided radio jets found to date in an NLS1, with a deprojected linear size of almost 250 kpc. We also analysed near-infrared and optical images obtained by the Magellan Baade and the European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope. By means of photometric decomposition and colour maps, we determined that J0354-1340 is hosted by a spiral/disk galaxy. Fully evolved relativistic jets have traditionally been associated with high-mass elliptical galaxies hosting the most massive black holes, but our results confirm that also less massive black holes in spiral galaxies can launch and sustain powerful jets, implying that the launching of the jets is governed by factors other than previously believed., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present spectroscopy and photometry of SN 2018zd, a Type IIP core-collapse supernova with signatures of interaction with circumstantial material in its earliest spectra. High ionization lines, the earmark of shock breakout, are not seen in the earliest spectral epoch, and are only seen in a single spectrum at 4.9 d after explosion. The strength and brevity of these features imply a confined circumstellar material shell in the immediate vicinity of the progenitor. Once the narrow emission lines disappear, SN 2018zd evolves similarly to a Type IIP SN, although the blue colour and enhanced plateau magnitude of SN 2018zd suggests an additional source of luminosity throughout the plateau phase. While SN 2018zd has previously been proposed as an electron-capture SN, we suggest that it is an Fe core-collapse from a low mass red supergiant progenitor. Differences in interpretation for SN 2018zd arise in part due to the large uncertainty on the distance to the host-galaxy NGC 2146, which we re-derive here to be $15.6^{+6.1}_{-3.0}$ Mpc. We find the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass for SN 2018zd to be 0.017 M$_{\odot}$, significantly higher than models of ECSNe predict. We also find the Ni/Fe ratio in SN 2018zd to be much lower that would be expected for an ECSN.

We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN~2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between $-11.5$ and $-14.5$ mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range $0.5$ - $9.0 \times10^{40}~\mathrm{erg~s}^{-1}$ and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3 - 3) $\times$~10$^{47}$~erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the $^{56}$Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce $^{56}$Ni masses on the order of $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-3}$~\msun. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km~s$^{-1}$, along with Ca~II features. In particular, the [Ca~II] $\lambda$7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN~2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We propose the explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star forming an electron-capture supernova as a plausible explanation for these events., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that, in some cases, can harbor powerful relativistic jets. One of them, PKS 2004-447, shows gamma-ray emission, and underwent its first recorded multifrequency flare in 2019. However, past studies revealed that in radio this source can be classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS), suggesting that, unlike other gamma-ray sources, the relativistic jets of PKS 2004-447 have a large inclination with respect to the line of sight. We present here a set of spectroscopic observations of this object, aimed at carefully measuring its black hole mass and Eddington ratio, determining the properties of its emission lines, and characterizing its long term variability. We find that the black hole mass is $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, and the Eddington ratio is 0.08. Both values are within the typical range of NLS1s. The spectra also suggest that the 2019 flare was caused mainly by the relativistic jet, while the accretion disk played a minor role during the event. In conclusion, we confirm that PKS 2004-447 is one of the rare examples of gamma-ray emitting CSS/NLS1s hybrid, and that these two classes of objects are likely connected in the framework of AGN evolution., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, resubmitted to A&A after minor comments from the referee

Context. The nitrogen reservoir in planetary systems is a long standing problem. Part of the N-bearing molecules is probably incorporated into the ice bulk during the cold phases of the stellar evolution, and may be gradually released into the gas phase when the ice is heated, such as in active comets. The chemical nature of the N-reservoir should greatly influence how, when and in what form N returns to the gas phase, or is incorporated into the refractory material forming planetary bodies. Aims. We present the study the thermal desorption of two ammonium salts: ammonium formate and ammonium acetate from a gold surface and from a water ice substrate. Methods. Temperature-programmed desorption experiments and Fourier transform infrared reflection spectroscopy were conducted to investigate the desorption behavior of ammonium salts. Results. Ammonium salts are semi-volatile species releasing neutral species as major components upon desorption, that is ammonia and the corresponding organic acid (HCOOH and CH3COOH), at temperatures higher than the temperature of thermal desorption of water ice. Their desorption follows a first-order Wigner-Polanyi law. We find the first order kinetic parameters A = 7.7 $\pm$ 0.6 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ s$^{-1}$ and E$_{bind}$ = 68.9 $\pm$ 0.1 kJ~mol$^{-1}$ for ammonium formate and A = 3.0 $\pm$ 0.4 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ s$^{-1}$ and E$_{bind}$ = 83.0 $\pm$ 0.2 kJ~mol$^{-1}$ for ammonium acetate. The presence of a water ice substrate does not influence the desorption kinetics. Ammonia molecules locked in salts desorb as neutral molecules at temperatures much higher than previously expected that are usually attributed to refractory materials. Conclusions. Ammonia snow-line has a smaller radius than the water snow-line. As a result, the NH3/H2O ratio content in solar system bodies can be a hint as to where they formed and subsequently migrated., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 10 pages, 7 figures

Aims: The complexity of star formation at the physical scale of molecular clouds is not yet fully understood. We investigate the mechanisms regulating the formation of stars in different environments within nearby star-forming galaxies from the PHANGS sample. Methods: Integral field spectroscopic data and radio-interferometric observations of 18 galaxies were combined to explore the existence of the resolved star formation main sequence (rSFMS), resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (rKS), and resolved molecular gas main sequence (rMGMS), and we derived their slope and scatter at spatial resolutions from 100 pc to 1 kpc (under various assumptions). Results: All three relations were recovered at the highest spatial resolution (100 pc). Furthermore, significant variations in these scaling relations were observed across different galactic environments. The exclusion of non-detections has a systematic impact on the inferred slope as a function of the spatial scale. Finally, the scatter of the $\Sigma_\mathrm{mol. gas + stellar}$ versus $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ correlation is smaller than that of the rSFMS, but higher than that found for the rKS. Conclusions: The rMGMS has the tightest relation at a spatial scale of 100 pc (scatter of 0.34 dex), followed by the rKS (0.41 dex) and then the rSFMS (0.51 dex). This is consistent with expectations from the timescales involved in the evolutionary cycle of molecular clouds. Surprisingly, the rKS shows the least variation across galaxies and environments, suggesting a tight link between molecular gas and subsequent star formation. The scatter of the three relations decreases at lower spatial resolutions, with the rKS being the tightest (0.27 dex) at a spatial scale of 1 kpc. Variation in the slope of the rSFMS among galaxies is partially due to different detection fractions of $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ with respect to $\Sigma_\mathrm{stellar}$., Comment: 27 pages, 29 figures, Accepted in A&A

ABRIDGED: Dorado is a nearby, rich and clumpy galaxy group that extends for several degrees in the Southern Hemisphere. For the first time, we map the Ha distribution as a possible indicator of star formation (SF) activity of Dorado members a large fraction of which show interaction and merging signatures. With the 2.5m du Pont and the 1m Swope telescopes we obtained narrow-band, calibrated images of 14 galaxies, forming the backbone of the group, mapping Ha+[N II] down to few 10$^{-17}$ erg~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$~arcsec$^{-2}$. We estimated the galaxy star formation rate (SFR) from the Ha fluxes, corrected for Galaxy foreground extinction and [N II] contamination. Ha+[N II] emission has been detected in all galaxies. HII regions clearly emerge in late-type galaxies (LTGs) , while in early-type galaxies (ETGs) the Ha+[N II] emission is dominated by [N II], especially in the central regions. However, HII complexes are also revealed in four ETGs. Considering the Dorado group as a whole, we notice that the Ha+[N II] equivalent width, a measure of the specific SF, increases with the morphological type, from early to late-type members, although it remains lower that what observed in similar surveys of spiral galaxies. The SFR of the spiral members is in the range of what observed in similar galaxies surveys James+ (2004), although, in three spirals the SFR is well below the median for their morphological classes. The SFR of some early-type members tends, at odds, to be higher than the average derived from Ha+[N II] surveys of this morphological family. We detected in Ha+[N II] all the ETGs observed and half of them show HII regions. These findings suggest that ETGs in this group are not dead galaxies: their SF has not shut down yet. In this paper, we present the analysis of new radio and optical observations of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 783. 1.6 GHz observations performed with the e-MERLIN interferometer confirm the presence of the diffuse emission previously observed. The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) also detects the nuclear source both at 1.6 GHz (L-Band) and 5 GHz (C-band). While the L-band image shows only an unresolved core, the C-band image shows the presence of a partially resolved structure, at a position angle of 60{\deg}. The brightness temperature of the emission in both bands ($>10^6$ K) suggests that it is a pc-scale jet produced by the AGN. The relatively steep VLBA spectral index ($\alpha_{VLBA} = 0.63\pm0.03$) is consistent with the presence of optically thin emission on milliarcsecond scales. Finally, we investigated two possible scenarios that can result in the misalignment between the kpc and pc-scale radio structure detected in the galaxy. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are peculiar active galactic nuclei (AGN). Most of them do not show strong radio emission, but recently seven radio-quiet (or -silent) NLS1s have been detected flaring multiple times at 37 GHz by the Mets\"ahovi Radio Telescope, indicating the presence of relativistic jets in these peculiar sources. We observed them with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in A configuration at 1.6, 5.2, and 9.0 GHz. Our results show that these sources are either extremely faint or not detected in the JVLA bands. At those frequencies, the radio emission from their relativistic jet must be absorbed, either via synchrotron self-absorption as it occurs in gigahertz-peaked sources or, more likely, via free-free absorption by a screen of ionized gas associated with starburst activity or shocks. Our findings cast new shadows on the radio-loudness criterion, which seems to be more and more frequently a misleading parameter. The distribution of metals within a galaxy traces the baryon cycle and the buildup of galactic disks, but the detailed gas phase metallicity distribution remains poorly sampled. We have determined the gas phase oxygen abundances for 7,138 HII regions across the disks of eight nearby galaxies using VLT/MUSE optical integral field spectroscopy as part of the PHANGS-MUSE survey. After removing the first order radial gradients present in each galaxy, we look at the statistics of the metallicity offset (Delta O/H) and explore azimuthal variations. Across each galaxy, we find low (sigma=0.03-0.05 dex) scatter at any given radius, indicative of efficient mixing. We compare physical parameters for those HII regions that are 1 sigma outliers towards both enhanced and reduced abundances. Regions with enhanced abundances have high ionization parameter, higher Halpha luminosity, lower Halpha velocity dispersion, younger star clusters and associated molecular gas clouds show higher molecular gas densities. This indicates recent star formation has locally enriched the material. Regions with reduced abundances show increased Halpha velocity dispersions, suggestive of mixing introducing more pristine material. We observe subtle azimuthal variations in half of the sample, but can not always cleanly associate this with the spiral pattern. Regions with enhanced and reduced abundances are found distributed throughout the disk, and in half of our galaxies we can identify subsections of spiral arms with clearly associated metallicity gradients. We present a detailed study of 11 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) that both have optical and X-ray spectroscopic observations. There are five complex NLS1s (C-NLS1s) and six simple NLS1s (S-NLS1s). We propose a possible correlation between [O III] line asymmetry and X-ray complexity. The outflow or wind from the inner accretion disk is commonly present in NLS1s and mostly directed along the system axis. In C-NLS1s only weak wind effects are measured, the X-ray spectral complexity might be caused by the presence of ionized material in the wind. On the contrary, the wind in S-NLS1s is fast, the ionized material could be swept by such a strong wind, thus the complex feature is missing which results in a simple X-ray spectrum. Furthermore, this outflow scenario seems to be an inclination effect. Since the speed of the wind is higher in a small inclination while lower in a large inclination, S-NLS1s might be sources viewed at small angles while C-NLS1s might be sources viewed at large angles., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 10 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables

Line profiles can provide fundamental information on the physics of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In the case of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) this is of particular importance since past studies revealed how their permitted line profiles are well reproduced by a Lorentzian function instead of a Gaussian. This has been explained with different properties of the broad-line region (BLR), which may present a more pronounced turbulent motions in NLS1s with respect to other AGN. We investigated the line profiles in a recent large NLS1 sample classified using SDSS, and we divided the sources into two subsamples according to their line shapes, Gaussian or Lorentzian. The line profiles clearly separate all the properties of NLS1s. Black hole mass, Eddington ratio, [O III], and Fe II strength are all very different in the Lorentzian and Gaussian samples. We interpret this in terms of evolution within the class of NLS1s. The Lorentzian sources may be the youngest objects, while Gaussian profiles may be typically associated to more evolved objects. We present high-cadence ultraviolet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (NIR) data on the luminous Type II-P supernova SN 2017gmr from hours after discovery through the first 180 days. SN 2017gmr does not show signs of narrow, high-ionization emission lines in the early optical spectra, yet the optical lightcurve evolution suggests that an extra energy source from circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction must be present for at least 2 days after explosion. Modeling of the early lightcurve indicates a ~500R$_{\odot}$ progenitor radius, consistent with a rather compact red supergiant, and late-time luminosities indicate up to 0.130 $\pm$ 0.026 M$_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni are present, if the lightcurve is solely powered by radioactive decay, although the $^{56}$Ni mass may be lower if CSM interaction contributes to the post-plateau luminosity. Prominent multi-peaked emission lines of H$\alpha$ and [O I] emerge after day 154, as a result of either an asymmetric explosion or asymmetries in the CSM. We present extensive datasets for a class of intermediate-luminosity optical transients known as "luminous red novae" (LRNe). They show double-peaked light curves, with an initial rapid luminosity rise to a blue peak (at -13 to -15 mag), which is followed by a longer-duration red peak that sometimes is attenuated, resembling a plateau. The progenitors of three of them (NGC4490-2011OT1, M101-2015OT1, and SNhunt248), likely relatively massive blue to yellow stars, were also observed in a pre-eruptive stage when their luminosity was slowly increasing. Early spectra obtained during the first peak show a blue continuum with superposed prominent narrow Balmer lines, with P Cygni profiles. Lines of Fe II are also clearly observed, mostly in emission. During the second peak, the spectral continuum becomes much redder, Halpha is barely detected, and a forest of narrow metal lines is observed in absorption. Very late-time spectra (~6 months after blue peak) show an extremely red spectral continuum, peaking in the infrared (IR) domain. Halpha is detected in pure emission at such late phases, along with broad absorption bands due to molecular overtones (such as TiO, VO). We discuss a few alternative scenarios for LRNe. Although major instabilities of single massive stars cannot be definitely ruled out, we favour a common envelope ejection in a close binary system, with possibly a final coalescence of the two stars. We present the results of the monitoring campaign of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2018cnf (aka ASASSN-18mr). It was discovered about 10 days before the maximum light (on MJD = 58293.4+-5.7 in the V band, with MV = -18.13+-0.15 mag). The multiband light curves show an immediate post-peak decline with some minor luminosity fluctuations, followed by a flattening starting about 40 days after maximum. The early spectra are relatively blue and show narrow Balmer lines with P Cygni profiles. Additionally, Fe II, O I, He I and Ca II are detected. The spectra show little evolution with time, with intermediate-width features becoming progressively more prominent, indicating stronger interaction of the SN ejecta with the circumstellar medium. The inspection of archival images from the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) survey has revealed a variable source at the SN position, with a brightest detection in December 2015 at Mr = -14.66+-0.17 mag. This was likely an eruptive phase from the massive progenitor star started from at least mid-2011, and that produced the circumstellar environment within which the star exploded as a Type IIn SN. The overall properties of SN 2018cnf closely resemble those of transients such as SN 2009ip. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). It is often believed that these AGN have small black hole mass, which is responsible for the narrowness of the permitted lines. They are also characterised by a high accretion rate, typically closer to the Eddington limit. Nevertheless, narrow permitted lines might also be caused by a disk-like broad-line region (BLR) viewed pole-on. This class of objects presents strong X-ray emission, which is characterised by a very steep spectral index described by a single power law. In particular, some of them exhibit particular features around the iron K-shell energy at 6-8 keV. Recently, this different spectral behaviour was attributed to inclination. In this work we are going to analyse optical spectra to measure in different ways the width of H$\beta$, which is another potential inclination indicator. We present a new accurate sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). Based on the optical spectral features, 167 sources were classified as NLS1s. We derived flux-calibrated spectra in the sample for the first time. Strong luminosity correlations between the continuum and the emission lines were found. We estimated their central black hole masses and Eddington ratios, which are lying in a typical range of NLS1s. In the sample, 23 NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies and 12 of them are radio-loud. Thanks to the execution of extensive spectroscopic surveys that have covered large fractions of the sky down to magnitudes as faint as $i \approx 19$, it has been possible to identify several narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and to investigate their properties over a large range of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The interpretation of their nature, however, is still hampered by the statistical uncertainties related to the way in which NLS1 candidates are selected. In this contribution, we present a study to detect and to model emission lines in optical spectra extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), adopting the most proper strategy to identify the source of line excitation and to produce a detailed model with measurements of several emission-line parameters. We demonstrate the application of this technique to explore fundamental questions, such as the presence of gas and dust around the core of AGNs and the spectral energy distribution of their ionizing radiation. We compare the spectral properties of NLS1s with those of other type 1 active galaxies and we summarize the potential of this approach to identify NLS1s in present day and future spectroscopic surveys. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) which are known to be one of the few sources of $\gamma$ rays, which originate in a relativistic beamed jet. Becuase of their relatively large distance, a poorly investigated aspect of these jetted NLS1s is their environment, and in particular their host galaxy. In this work we present the results of a morphological analysis of the host galaxy of the jetted NLS1 IRAS 20181-2244 observed with the 6.5m Baade Telescope of the Las Campanas Observatory. The GALFIT analysis ran on the Ks image, along with additional spectroscopic observations performed with the Nordic Optical Telescope, clearly revealed the presence of an interacting system of two galaxies. The data suggest that this NLS1 is hosted by a late-type galaxy, although the result is not conclusive. This analysis, along with other results in the literature, might suggest that two populations of jetted NLS1 exist. We present a new accurate catalog of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) final data release, which is currently the most extensive spectroscopic survey available in the southern sky whose database has not yet been systematically explored. We classified 167 sources as NLS1s based on their optical spectral properties. We derived flux-calibrated spectra for the first time that the 6dFGS indeed does not provide. By analyzing these spectra, we obtained strong correlations between the monochromatic luminosity at 5100 A and the luminosity of Hbeta and [O III]5007 lines. The estimated central black hole mass and Eddington ratio have an average value of 8.6 x 10^6 M_Sun and 0.96 L_Edd respectively, which is a typical value for NLS1s. In the sample, 23 (13.8%) NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies, and 12 (7.0%) of them are radio-loud. Our results confirmed that radio-loud sources tend to have a higher redshift, more massive black hole, and higher radio and optical luminosity than radio-quiet sources., Comment: Publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report the first results of a survey on 74 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) carried out in 2015 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A-configuration. So far, this is the largest survey aimed to image the radio continuum of NLS1s. We produced radio maps in order to compare the general properties of three different samples of objects: radio-quiet NLS1s (RQNLS1s), steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (S-NLS1s), and flat-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (F-NLS1s). We find that the three classes correspond to different radio morphologies, with F-NLS1s being more compact, and RQNLS1s often showing diffuse emission on kpc scales. We also find that F-NLS1s might be low-luminosity and possibly young blazars, and that S-NLS1s are part of the parent population of F-NLS1s. We report simultaneous observations at different energy bands in radio, optical, UV, X-rays and $\gamma$ rays of the flat-spectrum radio-quasar 3C 345. We built the light curve of the source at different frequencies from 2008, the beginning of the \textit{Fermi} all-sky survey, to 2016, using new data and public archives. In particular we obtained several optical spectra, to study the behavior of emission lines and the continuum in different activity states and to derive the black hole mass. 3C 345 showed two flaring episodes in 2009, which occurred simultaneously in $\gamma$ ray, optical/UV and X-rays, and were later followed in radio. The source shows an inverse Compton dominated spectral energy distribution, which moved from higher to lower frequencies from the high to the low state. The reverberation of emission lines during one outburst event allowed us to constrain the location of production of $\gamma$ rays very close to the broad-line region, and possibly in the jet-base. We studied the properties of the gas of the extended narrow line region (ENLR) of two Seyfert 2 galaxies: IC 5063 and NGC 7212. We analysed high resolution spectra to investigate how the main properties of this region depend on the gas velocity. We divided the emission lines in velocity bins and we calculated several line ratios. Diagnostic diagrams and SUMA composite models (photo-ionization + shocks), show that in both galaxies there might be evidence of shocks significantly contributing in the gas ionization at high |V|, even though photo-ionization from the active nucleus remains the main ionization mechanism. In IC 5063 the ionization parameter depends on V and its trend might be explained assuming an hollow bi-conical shape for the ENLR, with one of the edges aligned with the galaxy disk. On the other hand, NGC 7212 does not show any kind of dependence. The models show that solar O/H relative abundances reproduce the observed spectra in all the analysed regions. They also revealed an high fragmentation of the gas clouds, suggesting that the complex kinematics observed in these two objects might be caused by interaction between the ISM and high velocity components, such as jets., Comment: 29 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In recent years, the old paradigm according to which only high-mass black holes can launch powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) has begun to crumble. The discovery of $\gamma$-rays coming from narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), usually considered young and growing AGN harboring a central black hole with mass typically lower than 10$^8$ M$_\odot$, indicated that also these low-mass AGN can produce powerful relativistic jets. The search for parent population of $\gamma$-ray emitting NLS1s revealed their connection with compact steep-spectrum sources (CSS). In this proceeding we present a review of the current knowledge of these sources, we present the new important case of 3C 286, classified here for the fist time as NLS1, and we finally provide a tentative orientation based unification of NLS1s and CSS sources., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. We present the first results of a radio survey of 79 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A configuration aimed at studying the radio properties of these sources. We report the detection of extended emission in one object: Mrk 783. This is intriguing, since the radio-loudness parameter R of this object is close to the threshold between radio-quiet and radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). The galaxy is one of the few NLS1 showing such an extended emission at z < 0.1. The radio emission is divided in a compact core component and an extended component, observed on both sides of the nucleus and extending from 14 kpc south-east to 12 kpc north-west. There is no sign of a collimated jet, and the shape of the extended component is similar to those of some Seyfert galaxies. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are active galactic nuclei (AGN) recently identified as a new class of $\gamma$-ray sources. The high energy emission is explained by the presence of a relativistic jet observed at small angles, just like in the case of blazars. When the latter are observed at larger angles they appear as radio-galaxies, but an analogue parent population for beamed NLS1s has not yet been determined. In this work we analyze this problem by studying the physical properties of three different samples of parent sources candidates: steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s, radio-quiet NLS1s, and disk-hosted radio-galaxies, along with compact steep-spectrum sources. In our approach, we first derived black hole mass and Eddington ratio from the optical spectra, then we investigated the interaction between the jet and the narrow-line region from the [O III] $\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 lines. Finally, the radio luminosity function allowed us to compare their jet luminosity and hence determine the relations between the samples., Comment: 6 pages, no figures. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) are active galactic nuclei (AGN) known to have small masses of the central black hole and high accretion rates. NLS1s are generally radio-quiet, but a small part of them (about 7\%) are radio-loud. The recent discovery of powerful relativistic jets in radio-loud NLS1s (RLNLS1s), emitting at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, opened intriguing questions. The observed luminosity of the jet is generally weak, smaller than blazars, although when rescaled for the mass of the central black hole, it becomes of the same order of magnitude of the latter. The weak luminosity, and hence observed flux, resulted in a small number of known RLNLS1. From a recent survey of RLNLS1s, it was found that only 8 out of 42 sources had radio flux density at 1.4 GHz greater than 100 mJy, while 21 out of 42 had flux density smaller than 10 mJy. In addition, given the strong variability at all wavelengths, with present-day facilities RLNLS1s can often only be detected during high activity periods. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA), with its superior sensitivity, will break this limit, allowing us to unveil a relatively unknown population of jetted AGN. Context. It is generally agreed that hydrogenation reactions dominate chemistry on grain surfaces in cold, dense molecular cores, saturating the molecules present in ice mantles. Aims. We present a study of the low temperature reactivity of solid phase isocyanic acid (HNCO) with hydrogen atoms, with the aim of elucidating its reaction network. Methods. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry were employed to follow the evolution of pure HNCO ice during bombardment with H atoms. Both multilayer and monolayer regimes were investigated. Results. The hydrogenation of HNCO does not produce detectable amounts of formamide (NH2CHO) as the major product. Experiments using deuterium reveal that deuteration of solid HNCO occurs rapidly, probably via cyclic reaction paths regenerating HNCO. Chemical desorption during these reaction cycles leads to loss of HNCO from the surface. Conclusions. It is unlikely that significant quantities of NH2CHO form from HNCO. In dense regions, however, deuteration of HNCO will occur. At the low temperatures of interstellar dust grains, it is well established that surface chemistry proceeds via diffusive mechanisms of H atoms weakly bound (physisorbed) to the surface. Until recently, however, it was unknown whether atoms heavier than hydrogen could diffuse rapidly enough on interstellar grains to react with other accreted species. In addition, models still require simple reduction as well as oxidation reactions to occur on grains to explain the abundances of various molecules. In this paper we investigate O-atom diffusion and reactivity on a variety of astrophysically relevant surfaces (water ice of three different morphologies, silicate, and graphite) in the 6.5 - 25 K temperature range. Experimental values were used to derive a diffusion law that emphasizes that O atoms diffuse by quantum mechanical tunnelling at temperatures as low as 6.5 K. The rate of diffusion on each surface, based on modelling results, were calculated and an empirical law is given as a function of the surface temperature. Relative diffusion rates are k_H2Oice > k_sil > k_graph >> k_expected. The implications of an efficient O-atom diffusion over astrophysically relevant time-scales are discussed. Our findings show that O atoms can scan any available reaction partners (e.g., either another H atom, if available, or a surface radical like O or OH) at a faster rate than that of accretion. Any evolving system can change of state via thermal mechanisms (hopping a barrier) or via quantum tunneling. Most of the time, efficient classical mechanisms dominate at high temperatures. This is why an increase of the temperature can initiate the chemistry. We present here an experimental investigation of O-atom diffusion and reactivity on water ice. We explore the 6-25 K temperature range at sub-monolayer surface coverages. We derive the diffusion temperature law and observe the transition from quantum to classical diffusion. Despite of the high mass of O, quantum tunneling is efficient even at 6 K. As a consequence, the solid-state astrochemistry of cold regions should be reconsidered and should include the possibility of forming larger organic molecules than previously expected., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

The mobility of O atoms at very low temperatures is not generally taken into account, despite O diffusion would add to a series of processes leading to the observed rich molecular diversity in space. We present a study of the mobility and reactivity of O atoms on an amorphous silicate surface. Our results are in the form of RAIRS and temperature-programmed desorption spectra of O2 and O3 produced via two pathways: O + O and O2 + O, investigated in a submonolayer regime and in the range of temperature between 6.5 and 30 K. All the experiments show that ozone is formed efficiently on silicate at any surface temperature between 6.5 and 30 K. The derived upper limit for the activation barriers of O + O and O2 + O reactions is 150 K/kb. Ozone formation at low temperatures indicates that fast diffusion of O atoms is at play even at 6.5 K. Through a series of rate equations included in our model, we also address the reaction mechanisms and show that neither the Eley Rideal nor the Hot atom mechanisms alone can explain the experimental values. The rate of diffusion of O atoms, based on modeling results, is much higher than the one generally expected, and the diffusive process proceeds via the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism enhanced by tunnelling. In fact, quantum effects turn out to be a key factor that cannot be neglected in our simulations. Astrophysically, efficient O3 formation on interstellar dust grains would imply the presence of huge reservoirs of oxygen atoms. Since O3 is a reservoir of elementary oxygen, and also of OH via its hydrogenation, it could explain the observed concomitance of CO2 and H2O in the ices., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

Sticking of H and D atoms on interstellar dust grains is the first step in molecular hydrogen formation, which is a key reaction in the InterStellar Medium (ISM). After studying the sticking coefficients of H2 and D2 molecules on amorphous silicate surfaces experimentally and theoretically, we extrapolate the results to the sticking coefficient of atoms and propose a formulae that gives the sticking coefficients of H and D on both silicates and icy dust grains. In our experiments, we used the King and Wells method for measuring the sticking coefficients of H2 and D2 molecules on a silicate surface held at 10 K. It consists of measuring with a QMS (quadrupole mass spectrometer) the signals of H2 and D2 molecules reflected by the surface during the exposure of the sample to the molecular beam at a temperature ranging from 20 K to 340 K. We tested the efficiency of a physical model, developed previously for sticking on water-ice surfaces. We applied this model to our experimental results for the sticking coefficients of H2 and D2 molecules on a silicate surface and estimated the sticking coefficient of atoms by a single measurement of atomic recombination and propose an extrapolation. Sticking of H, D, HD, H2, and D2 on silicates grains behaves the same as on icy dust grains. The sticking decreases with the gas temperature, and is dependent on the mass of the impactor. The sticking coefficient for both surfaces and impactors can be modeled by an analytical formulae S(T), which describes both the experiments and the thermal distribution expected in an astrophysical context. The parameters S0 and T0 are summarized in a table. Previous estimates for the sticking coefficient of H atoms are close to the new estimation; however, we find that, when isotopic effects are taken into account, the sticking coefficient variations can be as much as a factor of 2 at T=100 K., Comment: 7 pages and 3 Postscript figures. The desorption characteristics of molecules on interstellar dust grains are important for modelling the behaviour of molecules in icy mantles and, critically, in describing the solid-gas interface. In this study, a series of laboratory experiments exploring the desorption of three small molecules from three astrophysically relevant surfaces are presented. The desorption of CO, O2 and CO2 at both sub-monolayer and multilayer coverages was investigated from non-porous water, crystalline water and silicate surfaces. Experimental data was modelled using the Polanyi-Wigner equation to produce a mathematical description of the desorption of each molecular species from each type of surface, uniquely describing both the monolayer and multilayer desorption in a single combined model. The formation of water molecules from the reaction between ozone (O3) and D-atoms is studied experimentally for the first time. Ozone is deposited on non-porous amorphous solid water ice (H2O), and D-atoms are then sent onto the sample held at 10 K. HDO molecules are detected during the desorption of the whole substrate where isotope mixing takes place, indicating that water synthesis has occurred. The efficiency of water formation via hydrogenation of ozone is of the same order of magnitude of that found for reactions involving O atoms or O2 molecules and exhibits no apparent activation barrier. Context. The synthesis of water is one necessary step in the origin and development of life. It is believed that pristine water is formed and grows on the surface of icy dust grains in dark interstellar clouds. Until now, there has been no experimental evidence whether this scenario is feasible or not on an astrophysically relevant template and by hydrogen and oxygen atom reactions. Aims. We present here the first experimental evidence of water synthesis by such a process on a realistic grain surface analogue in dense clouds, i.e., amorphous water ice. Methods. Atomic beams of oxygen and deuterium are aimed at a porous water ice substrate (H2O) held at 10 K. Products are analyzed by the temperature-programmed desorption technique. Results. We observe production of HDO and D2O, indicating that water is formed under conditions of the dense interstellar medium from hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Aims. The mobility of H atoms on the surface of interstellar dust grains at low temperature is still a matter of debate. In dense clouds, the hydrogenation of adsorbed species (i.e., CO), as well as the subsequent deuteration of the accreted molecules depend on the mobility of H atoms on water ice. Astrochemical models widely assume that H atoms are mobile on the surface of dust grains even if controversy still exists. We present here direct experimental evidence of the mobility of H atoms on porous water ice surfaces at 10 K. Methods. In a UHV chamber, O2 is deposited on a porous amorphous water ice substrate. Then D atoms are deposited onto the surface held at 10 K. Temperature-Programmed Desorption (TPD) is used and desorptions of O2 and D2 are simultaneously monitored. Results. We find that the amount of O2 that desorb during the TPD diminishes if we increase the deposition time of D atoms. O2 is thus destroyed by D atoms even though these molecules have previously diffused inside the pores of thick water ice. Our results can be easily interpreted if D is mobile at 10 K on the water ice surface. A simple rate equation model fits our experimental data and best fit curves were obtained for a D atoms diffusion barrier of 22(+-)2 meV. Therefore hydrogenation can take place efficiently on interstellar dust grains.
