1. Oral peptide therapeutics for diabetes treatment: State-of-the-art and future perspectives

Abstract

Diabetes, characterized by hyperglycemia, is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Peptides, such as insulin and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogs, have shown promise as treatments for diabetes due to their ability to mimic or enhance insulin's actions in the body. Compared to subcutaneous injection, oral administration of anti-diabetic peptides is a preferred approach. However, biological barriers significantly reduce the efficacy of oral peptide therapeutics. Recent advancements in drug delivery systems and formulation techniques have greatly improved the oral delivery of peptide therapeutics and their efficacy in treating diabetes. This review will highlight (1) the benefits of oral anti-diabetic peptide therapeutics; (2) the biological barriers for oral peptide delivery, including pH and enzyme degradation, intestinal mucosa barrier, and biodistribution barrier; (3) the delivery platforms to overcome these biological barriers. Additionally, the review will discuss the prospects in this field. The information provided in this review will serve as a valuable guide for future developments in oral anti-diabetic peptide therapeutics.

Abstract

Abstract This paper presents a world-leading scintillation light yield among inorganic crystals measured from a 0.5 kg pure-CsI detector operated at 77 Kelvin. Scintillation photons were detected by two 2-inch Hamamatsu SiPM arrays equipped with cryogenic front-end electronics. Benefiting the light yield enhancement of pure-CsI at low temperatures and the high photon detection efficiency of SiPM, a light yield of 30.1 photoelectrons per keV energy deposit was obtained for X-rays and $$\gamma $$ γ -rays with energies from 5.9 to 59.6 keV. Instrumental and physical effects in the light yield measurement are carefully analyzed. This is the first stable cryogenic operation of kg-scale pure-CsI crystal readout by SiPM arrays at liquid nitrogen temperatures for several days. The world-leading light yield opens a door for the usage of pure-CsI crystal in several fields, particularly in detecting the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering of reactor neutrinos. The potential of using pure-CsI crystals in neutrino physics is discussed in the paper.

3. Solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to azoxy compounds over Co single atoms decorated on Nb2O5 nanomeshes

Abstract

Abstract The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to azoxy compounds is highly important, yet challenging. Herein, we report an efficient strategy to construct individually dispersed Co atoms decorated on niobium pentaoxide nanomeshes with unique geometric and electronic properties. The use of this supported Co single atom catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene results in high catalytic activity and selectivity, with 99% selectivity and 99% conversion within 0.5 h. Remarkably, it delivers an exceptionally high turnover frequency of 40377 h–1, which is amongst similar state-of-the-art catalysts. In addition, it demonstrates remarkable recyclability, reaction scalability, and wide substrate scope. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the catalytic activity and selectivity are significantly promoted by the unique electronic properties and strong electronic metal-support interaction in Co1/Nb2O5. The absence of precious metals, toxic solvents, and reagents makes this catalyst more appealing for synthesizing azoxy compounds from nitroaromatics. Our findings suggest the great potential of this strategy to access single atom catalysts with boosted activity and selectivity, thus offering blueprints for the design of nanomaterials for organocatalysis.

4. Environmental radon control in the 700 m underground laboratory at JUNO

Abstract

Abstract The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory is constructing the world’s largest liquid scintillator detector, with a 20 kt target mass and approximately 700 m of overburden. The total underground space of civil construction is around 300,000 m $$^3$$ 3 , with the main hall comprising about 120,000 m $$^3$$ 3 , making it the largest experimental hall in the world. Maintaining a low radon concentration in the underground air is crucial for both human health and the accuracy of experiments involving rare decay detection, such as neutrino and dark matter experiments. To ensure human health and the integrity of neutrino physics experiments, the nominal radon concentration in the main hall must be kept below 200 Bq/m $$^3$$ 3 with a maximum value below 400 Bq/m $$^3$$ 3 . Introduction of fresh air from above ground can significantly lower radon concentration. A benchmark experiment conducted in the refuge room near the main hall revealed that the radon emanating from underground water is a significant source of radon in the underground air. The total underground ventilation rate is approximately 160,000 m $$^3$$ 3 /h of fresh air with about 30 Bq/m $$^3$$ 3 $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn from the bottom of the vertical tunnel after the installation of powerful fans. Of this, 55,000 m $$^3$$ 3 /h is used for ventilation in the main hall. As a result of these measures, the radon concentration inside the main hall has decreased from 1600 Bq/m $$^3$$ 3 to below 200 Bq/m $$^3$$ 3 under stable working conditions, with exceptions during rare adverse weather events or fan failures. The employed strategies to control radon concentration in the underground air are described in this paper.

Abstract

Herbal extraction residues (HERs) cause serious environmental pollution and resource waste. In this study, a novel green route was designed for the comprehensive reutilization of all components in HERs, taking Magnolia officinalis residues (MOR) as an example. The reluctant structure of MOR was first destroyed by alkali pretreatment to release the functional ingredients (magnolol and honokiol) originally remaining in MOR and to make MOR more accessible for hydrolysis. A metal–organic frame material MIL-101(Cr) with a maximum absorption capacity of 255.64 mg g−1 was synthesized to absorb the released honokiol and magnolol from the pretreated MOR solutions, and 40 g L−1 reducing sugars were obtained with 81.8% enzymatic hydrolysis rate at 10% MOR solid loading. Finally, 382 mg L−1 β-amyrin was produced from MOR hydrolysates by an engineered yeast strain. In total, 1 kg honokiol, 8 kg magnolol, and 7.64 kg β-amyrin could produce from 1 ton MOR by this cleaner process with a total economic output of 170,700 RMB.

Abstract

Urban multimodal public transport system with rail transit as the backbone and bus as the collaborative operation is an important carrier for the travel of urban residents. For improving efficiency of urban public transport services, it is important to optimize the feeder bus operation plans and promote efficient bridging. A quantitative method based on the data envelope analysis (DEA) algorithm was proposed to effectively evaluate the transfer efficiency of transit hubs and identify service bottlenecks, which used multi-source data including smart card transaction data, bus vehicle operation data and public transport trip chain data based on multimodal individual travel transaction data. Considering the passenger transfer and supply capacity of the feeder bus, and balancing between transfer and regular travel needs, a collaborative optimization model based on the branch and bound (BB) algorithm which can quickly obtain the absolute optimal solution of small-scale optimization problems is established to combinatorial optimize less efficient feeder bus line groups. The Tiantongyuan North transit hub and its feeder bus line in Beijing were selected as the case analysis. The results indicated that the main reasons for the failure of public transport to achieve DEA effectiveness are the departure frequency and the number of operating buses. With the collaborative optimization of the bus routing schedule, the average total transfer time for the transfer passengers is reduced by 19.9%, while the transfer time and waiting time are reduced by 22.8%, 16.1% respectively, which will help improve the efficiency and service level of multimodal public transport collaborative operation.

Abstract

Pseudocapacitive polymers have garnered significant attention in the realm of supercapacitors due to their versatile molecular design capabilities, cost‐effectiveness, and impressive electrical conductivity. However, limited by the low capacity and short cycle life, the investigation on conducting polymers for potential electrode materials is still insufficient. Herein, a series of pyrenetetraone‐derived polymers with pyrazine units are designed and synthesized. Furthermore, UV–vis spectroscopy demonstrates the different interaction behavior between the polymers and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which can further indicate the performance difference of the composite electrodes. As a result, the pseudocapacitive polymer/rGO composite electrode (2/1 PPYT/rGO) exhibits a high specific capacitance of 591 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in a 1 m sulfuric acid electrolyte. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by the 2/1 PPYT/rGO cathode and the annealed Ti3C2Tx anode (2/1 PPYT/rGO//A‐Ti3C2Tx) delivers an excellent energy density of 38.1 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 950 W kg−1. Additionally, both devices demonstrate outstanding stability, retaining over 90% of their capacity after 15 000 charge/discharge cycles. As a result, these carefully engineered organic polymers, with their well‐thought‐out structural designs, showcase exceptional electrochemical performance, positioning them as highly promising candidates for the next generation of high‐performance energy storage materials.

8. Yolk-shell cationic liposomes overcome mucus and epithelial barriers for enhanced oral drug delivery

Abstract

Liposomes have garnered attention for their potential in oral drug delivery. However, they encounter obstacles when traversing the mucus and epithelial barriers of the gastrointestinal tract. Recent studies indicate that the very characteristics enabling liposomes to penetrate mucus may adversely affect their cellular uptake. In this study, we introduce a novel strategy focused on liposome biomechanical properties, specifically stiffness. Inspired by the stiffness-mediated transformation behaviour of entities like cancer cells in biological environments, we developed yolk-shell structured cationic liposomes (YS-CLip) by incorporating mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Compared to their single-membrane structured counterparts, the YS-CLip demonstrated higher stiffness, adopting an ellipsoidal shape after stress, facilitating rotation-enhanced mucus penetration. This facilitated simultaneous circumvention of mucus diffusion and epithelial absorption barriers. In rats, orally administered YS-CLip adeptly bypassed both mucus and intestinal impediments, leading to an amplified bioavailability of doxorubicin, outperforming both their single-membrane counterparts and certain mucus-penetrating liposomes. Collectively, our findings illuminate the pivotal role of biomechanical stiffness in liposomal formulation, endorsing YS-CLip as a prospective strategy to navigate oral drug delivery challenges.

Abstract

The diverse applications of various tissues of Polygonum Multiflorum (PM) encompass the use of its leaf and bud as tea and vegetables, as well as the utilization of its expanded root tubers and caulis as medicinal substances. However, previous studies in the field of metabolomics have primarily focused on the medicinal properties of PM. In order to investigate the potential for broader applications of other tissues within PM, a metabolomic analysis was conducted for the first time using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS on 15 fresh PM tissues. A total of 231 compounds, including newly discovered compounds such as torosachrysone and dihydro-trihydroxystilbene acid derivatives, were identified within PM. Through clustering analysis, the PM tissues were categorized into edible and medicinal parts, with edible tissues exhibiting higher levels of phenolic acids, organic acids, and flavonoids, while the accumulation of quinones, dianthrones, stilbenes, and xanthones was observed in medicinal tissues. Comparative analysis demonstrated the potential application of discarded tissues, such as unexpanded root tuber (an industrial alternative to expanded root tuber) and young caulis (with edible potential). Moreover, the quantification of representative metabolites indicated that flowers and buds contained significant amounts of flavonoids or phenolic acids, suggesting their potential as functional food. Additionally, the edible portion of PM exhibited a high content of quercitrin, ranging from 0.59 to 10.37 mg/g. These findings serve as a valuable point of reference for the expanded utilization of PM tissues, thereby mitigating resource waste in this plant.

10. Comparative transcriptome and metabolome analysis revealed diversity in the response of resistant and susceptible rose (Rosa hybrida) varieties to Marssonina rosae

Abstract

Rose black spot disease caused by Marssonina rosae is among the most destructive diseases that affects the outdoor cultivation and production of roses; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the defensive response of roses to M. rosae have not been clarified. To investigate the diversity of response to M. rosae in resistant and susceptible rose varieties, we performed transcriptome and metabolome analyses of resistant (KT) and susceptible (FG) rose varieties and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) in response to M. rosae at different time points. In response to M. rosae, DEGs and DAMs were mainly upregulated compared to the control and transcription factors were concentrated in the WRKY and AP2/ERF families. Gene Ontology analysis showed that the DEGs of FG were mainly enriched in biological processes, such as the abscisic acid-activated signaling pathway, cell wall, and defense response, whereas the DEGs of KT were mainly enriched in Golgi-mediated vesicle transport processes. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that the DEGs of both varieties were concentrated in plant–pathogen interactions, plant hormone signal transduction, and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways, with the greatest number of DEGs associated with brassinosteroid (BR) in the plant hormone signal transduction pathway. The reliability of the transcriptome results was verified by qRT-PCR. DAMs of KT were significantly enriched in the butanoate metabolism pathway, whereas DAMs of FG were significantly enriched in BR biosynthesis, glucosinolate biosynthesis, and tryptophan metabolism. Moreover, the DAMs in these pathways were significantly positively correlated with the DEGs. Disease symptoms were aggravated when FG leaves were inoculated with M. rosae after 24-epibrassinolide treatment, indicating that the response of FG to M. rosae involves the BR signaling pathway. Our results provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying rose response to M. rosae and lay a theoretical foundation for formulating rose black spot prevention and control strategies and cultivating resistant varieties.

11. KNCFS: Feature selection for high-dimensional datasets based on improved random multi-subspace learning.

Feature selection has long been a focal point of research in various fields.Recent studies have focused on the application of random multi-subspaces methods to extract more information from raw samples.However,this approach inadequately addresses the adverse effects that may arise due to feature collinearity in high-dimensional datasets.To further address the limited ability of traditional algorithms to extract useful information from raw samples while considering the challenge of feature collinearity during the random subspaces learning process, we employ a clustering approach based on correlation measures to group features.Subsequently, we construct subspaces with lower inter-feature correlations.When integrating feature weights obtained from all feature spaces,we introduce a weighting factor to better handle the contributions from different feature spaces.We comprehensively evaluate our proposed algorithm on ten real datasets and four synthetic datasets,comparing it with six other feature selection algorithms.Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm,denoted as KNCFS,effectively identifies relevant features,exhibiting robust feature selection performance,particularly suited for addressing feature selection challenges in practice.

Abstract An undescribed pyrrole acid, 1-(4′-methoxy-4′-oxobutyl)-1 H-pyrrole-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (1) and one known pyrrole acid (2) were isolated from the fruits of Phyllanthus emblica. The structures of these compounds were elucidated via the comprehensive analyses of IR, HRESIMS, 1D and 2D spectroscopic data. A series of biological assays revealed that compounds 1 and 2 could inhibit LPS-induced over-production of nitric oxide (NO), interleukin-6 (IL-6), monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) by reducing the phosphorylation of extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) in RAW 264.7 cells. Additionally, compounds 1 and 2 were found to reduce lipid deposition and increase the mRNA expression of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 in oxidized low-density lipoprotein-treated RAW264.7 macrophages. 13. Quality uniformity evaluation of Babao Dan capsule based on its 14 main chemical compounds and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity

Abstract

Babao Dan capsule (BBDC) is a state secrecy traditional Chinese medicine patent prescription (TCMPP) that is widely used for hepatobiliary and urinary diseases. However, its quality uniformity evaluation (QUE) is lacking. It is necessary to develop a novel and multi–dimensional QUE strategy for BBDC based on chemical properties and bioactivities. An ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography–triple quadrupole–mass spectrometry (UHPLC–QQQ–MS/MS) was developed to quantify 14 compounds, and a QUE strategy was to assess intra–batch and inter–batches consistency. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory activities were measured in vitro by RAW264.7 cell and NF-κB-RE-luc HEK293 cell. The results indicated that 14 compounds from 16 samples (10 batches) were accurately quantified. And the intra–batch consistency values were less than or equal to 20.1%, whereas the largest inter–batches consistency value was 167.5% of glycocholic acid. 10 batches were divided into three categories to distinction inter–batches differences. BBDC had anti-inflammatory activities including inhibition of LPS–induced NO production and TNF α–activated luciferase counts. The NO inhibition difference of 10 batches was 10.87 μM and accounted for 49.8%. Briefly, the anti-inflammatory activities of 10 batches were different, but the dynamic trends within the same batch were similar, which was supported by luciferase counts. And the correlation was confirmed that the main compounds related to anti-inflammatory in BBDC were bile acids and saponins. Hence, a QUE strategy for BBDC was proposed to improve quality and ensure efficacy. This strategy can be utilized as a reference for consistency evaluations of TCMPPs.

Abstract

In an era of increasing globalization, the imperative for understanding multilingual texts elevated the role of translation to an everyday necessity. The efficacy of contemporary Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems was heavily dependent on the availability of substantial training data. As such, the creation of an expansive parallel corpus became a strategic focal point, providing a bedrock for the evolution of high-caliber NMT systems. However, building a parallel corpus often posed challenges due to its complexity and cost, especially for language pairs that lacked sufficient parallel data. To tackle this challenge, this study proposed a novel data augmentation method for the corpus. Bilingual news texts sourced from the KEKE English website were utilized, and SentenceBERT was employed to ensure accurate sentence alignment. Subsequently, the parallel partial sentences within the corpus were filtered and used to augment the dataset. Finally, the effectiveness of the method was assessed by calculating BLEU, chrF and METEOR scores based on both the original corpus and the data-augmented corpus using the base translation model. The experimental results indicated that compared to the baseline method, the optimal method showed an improvement of 0.4-2.1 points in BLEU scores, an improvement of 0.5-2.7 points in chrF scores, and an increase of 0.5-1.6 points in METEOR scores.

Abstract

The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

Abstract

Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Abstract

Abstract Phase change materials (PCMs) are expected to achieve dual-mode thermal management for heating and cooling Li-ion batteries (LIBs) according to real-time thermal conditions, guaranteeing the reliable operation of LIBs in both cold and hot environments. Herein, we report a liquid metal (LM) modified polyethylene glycol/LM/boron nitride PCM, capable of dual-mode thermal managing the LIBs through photothermal effect and passive thermal conduction. Its geometrical conformation and thermal pathways fabricated through ice-template strategy are conformable to the LIB’s structure and heat-conduction characteristic. Typically, soft and deformable LMs are modified on the boron nitride surface, serving as thermal bridges to reduce the contact thermal resistance among adjacent fillers to realize high thermal conductivity of 8.8 and 7.6 W m−1 K−1 in the vertical and in-plane directions, respectively. In addition, LM with excellent photothermal performance provides the PCM with efficient battery heating capability if employing a controllable lighting system. As a proof-of-concept, this PCM is manifested to heat battery to an appropriate temperature range in a cold environment and lower the working temperature of the LIBs by more than 10 °C at high charging/discharging rate, opening opportunities for LIBs with durable working performance and evitable risk of thermal runaway.

Abstract

Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract

Summary Systemic fungicides and antifungals are used as frontline treatments for fungal diseases in plants and humans. It is generally accepted that fungicides will bring significant negative side‐effects to the environment and result in fungicide resistance in the pathogenic fungi. Although previous research has focused on fungicide application rates and fungal resistance for a long time, little attention has been paid to fungicide residues after treatment, especially their potential role in fungal growth and sporulation. Here we investigated the effect of fungicides at sublethal concentrations on fungal sporulation. The results showed that two kinds of 14α‐demethylase inhibitors (DMIs) fungicides increased the number of isolates of Colletotrichum spp. to sporulate on PDA. Both on PDA medium and plant tissue, low concentration of DMI fungicides could promote spore production of Colletotrichum spp., whereas pyraclostrobin, a quinone outside inhibitor (QoIs), had no significant effects on sporulation of Colletotrichum spp. Transcriptomic analysis suggested that the DMIs fungicide stress signal may be transmitted to the central regulatory pathway through the FluG‐mediated signalling pathway, and further confirmed the morphological effect of DMI fungicide on promoting sporulation of Colletotrichum. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide insights into the reproductive response of fungi in response to fungicide stress. Our findings indicate that fungicides have two‐way effects on the growth and reproduction of pathogenic fungi and provide a new basis for the scientific and rational use of fungicides.

Abstract

The electrocatalytic conversion of biomass into high-value-added chemicals is one of the effective methods of green chemistry. Conventional metal catalysts have disadvantages, such as low atomic utilization and small surface areas. Catalyst materials derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention due to their unique physicochemical properties. Here, an MOF-derived non-precious metal CoxNiyS electrocatalyst was applied to the oxidation of biomass-derivative 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The HMF oxidation reaction activities were modulated by regulating the content of Co and Ni bimetals, showing a volcano curve with an increasing proportion of Co. When the Co:Ni ratio was 2:1, the HMF conversion rate reached 84.5%, and the yield of the main product, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), was 54%. The XPS results showed that the presence of high-valent nickel species after electrolysis, which further proved the existence and reactivity of NiOOH, as well as the synergistic effect of Co and Ni promoted the conversion of HMF. Increasing the content of Ni could increase the activity of HMF electrochemical oxidation, and increasing the content of Co could reduce the increase in the anodic current. This study has important significance for designing better HMF electrochemical catalysts in the future.

Abstract

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

25. One‐Step Formation of Low Work‐Function, Transparent and Conductive MgFxOy Electron Extraction for Silicon Solar Cells

Abstract

Abstract The development of high‐performance dopant‐free silicon solar cells is severely bottlenecked by opaque electron selective contact. In this paper, high transmittance (80.5% on glass) and low work function (2.92 eV) lithium fluoride (LiFx)/MgFxOy electron contact stack by tailoring the composition of MgFxOy hybrid film is reported. This hybrid structure exhibits a high conductivity (2978.4 S cm−1) and a low contact resistivity (2.0 mΩ cm2). The element profile of LiFx/MgFxOy contact is measured and the reaction kinetics is analyzed. As a proof‐of‐concept, this electron selective contact is applied for dopant‐free silicon solar cells. An impressive efficiency of 21.3% is achieved on dopant‐free monofacial solar cell with molybdenum oxide (MoOx)/zinc‐doped indium oxide (IZO) hole contact. An efficiency bifaciality of 71% is obtained for dopant‐free bifacial solar cell with full‐area LiFx/MgFxOy/ITO (tin‐doped indium oxide) transparent electron contact. It is the highest efficiency bifaciality so far for dopant‐free bifacial solar cells to the best knowledge. Both cell configurations with LiFx/MgFxOy contacts show excellent environment stability. The cell efficiency maintains more than 95% of its initial value after keeping in air for 1500 h. This work provides a new idea to achieve transparent electron contact, showing a great potential for high‐efficiency and low‐cost optoelectronic devices.

Abstract

We present the conjugated ionospheric total electron content (TEC) anomalies prior to the 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake, Japan, observed by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations in northern Australia. The onset time of the anomaly, determined by the Akaike’s information criterion, is 41.5 min before the earthquake in Australia, which is very close to the time observed in Japan. The positive TEC anomalies in Australia emerged on the same longitude as the land area of NE Japan. This supports the model that electric fields within the ionosphere redistributed the electrons immediately before large earthquakes. However, the observed anomaly is shifted equatorward by ∼500 km reflecting the difference in physical mechanisms between the two hemispheres. We also found that the geomagnetic declination near the conjugate point simultaneously started to change ∼40 min before the earthquake, but its physical implication is yet to be explored.

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease in which oxidative stress and neuroinflammation were demonstrated to be associated with neuronal loss and cognitive deficits. However, there are still no specific treatments that can prevent the progression of AD. In this study, a screening of anti-inflammatory hits from 4207 natural compounds of two different molecular libraries indicated 1,6-O,O-diacetylbritannilactone (OABL), a 1,10-seco-eudesmane sesquiterpene lactone isolated from the herb Inula britannica L., exhibited strong anti-inflammatory activity in vitro as well as favorable BBB penetration property. OABL reduced LPS-induced neuroinflammation in BV-2 microglial cells as assessed by effects on the levels of inflammatory mediators including NO, PGE2, TNF-α, iNOS, and COX-2, as well as the translocation of NF-κB. Besides, OABL also exhibited pronounced neuroprotective effects against oxytosis and ferroptosis in the rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cell line. For in vivo research, OABL (20 mg/kg B.W., i.p.) for 21 d attenuated the impairments in cognitive function observed in 6-month-old 5xFAD mice, as assessed with the Morris water maze test. OABL restored neuronal damage and postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) expression in the hippocampus. OABL also significantly reduced the accumulation of amyloid plaques, the Aβ expression, the phosphorylation of Tau protein, and the expression of BACE1 in AD mice brain. In addition, OABL attenuated the overactivation of microglia and astrocytes by suppressing the expressions of inflammatory cytokines, and increased glutathione (GSH) and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and super oxide dismutase (SOD) levels in the 5xFAD mice brain. In conclusion, these results highlight the beneficial effects of the natural product OABL as a novel treatment with potential application for drug discovery in AD due to its pharmacological profile.

Abstract

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Abstract

The existing energy management strategies for four-wheel-drive electric vehicles only take into account the vehicle energy consumption under static adhesion constraints. However, the front and rear axle loads transfer under dynamic conditions lead to the variations of vehicle adhesion characteristics, which results in the changes of vehicle energy consumptions. In this paper, a multi-objective optimal torque distribution strategy is proposed, taking into account the front and rear axle load transfer and the variations of adhesion characteristics. The advantages of the proposed strategy are verified through simulation studies in terms of vehicle energy consumption and wheel slip ratio, in comparison with the average torque distribution strategy and the optimal torque distribution strategy based on Sequential Quadratic Programming Algorithm. The simulation results show that the economy performance of the proposed strategy is superior to those of the competing methods. Furthermore, the proposed strategy provides good power performance and eliminates excessive wheel slip, which in turn ensures vehicle longitudinal stability and avoids energy loss resulting from frequent ASR interventions.

Abstract

The numerical simulation of non-uniform sediment transport under tidal flow in estuaries is a complicated, yet important, issue in Zhejiang estuaries. In this paper, a depth-averaged two-dimensional (2D) mathematical model for non-uniform sediment transport in estuaries is established and applied in Zhejiang tidal estuaries based on several newly derived formulas by Zhlin Sun et al. The model is validated using data from several experiments, including an aggradation test and an erosion test. Good performance in the tests indicates that the present model can simulate aggradation and erosion processes of non-uniform sediment. The model is also verified by observational data from the Jiaojiang estuary, and calculations agree well with measurements. The model is thus adaptable to simulating flow and non-uniform sediment transport in tidal estuaries.

Abstract

Roses, which are one of the world’s most important ornamental plants, are often damaged by pathogens, resulting in serious economic losses. As a subclass of the disease resistance gene family of plant nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors, TIR-NBS-LRR (TNL) genes play a vital role in identifying pathogen effectors and activating defense responses. However, a systematic analysis of the TNL gene family is rarely reported in roses. Herein, 96 intact TNL genes were identified in Rosa chinensis. Their phylogenies, physicochemical characteristics, gene structures, conserved domains and motifs, promoter cis-elements, microRNA binding sites, and intra- and interspecific collinearity relationships were analyzed. An expression analysis using transcriptome data revealed that RcTNL genes were dominantly expressed in leaves. Some RcTNL genes responded to gibberellin, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, Botrytis cinerea, Podosphaera pannosa, and Marssonina rosae (M. rosae); the RcTNL23 gene responded significantly to three hormones and three pathogens, and exhibited an upregulated expression. Furthermore, the black spot pathogen was identified as M. rosae. After inoculating rose leaves, an expression pattern analysis of the RcTNL genes suggested that they act during different periods of pathogen infection. The present study lays the foundations for an in-depth investigation of the TNL gene function and the mining of disease resistance genes in roses.

Abstract

Recently, Prussian blue analogues (PBAs)-based anode materials (oxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphides, borides, and carbides) have been extensively investigated in the field of energy conversion and storage. This is due to PBAs’ unique properties, including high theoretical specific capacity, environmental friendly, and low cost. We thoroughly discussed the formation of PBAs in conjunction with other materials. The performance of composite materials improves the electrochemical performance of its energy storage materials. Furthermore, new insights are provided for the manufacture of low-cost, high-capacity, and long-life battery materials in order to solve the difficulties in different electrode materials, combined with advanced manufacturing technology and principles. Finally, PBAs and their composites’ future challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Abstract

In this paper, an economy-oriented car-following control (EOCFC) strategy is proposed for electric vehicles in car-following scenarios. Specifically, a controller based on model predictive control (MPC) is developed to optimize the host vehicle’s speed for better energy economy while ensuring good car-following performance and ride comfort. The vehicle’s energy consumption is accurately quantified in the form of demand power, which is incorporated in the cost function for energy optimization. The proposed EOCFC strategy is evaluated using three standard test cycles, i.e., New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) and Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC), in comparison with a typical multi-objective adaptive cruise control strategy. The evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed EOCFC improves the energy economy of the host vehicle by 0.53%, 3.33% and 1.51%, under the NEDC, UDDS and WLTC test cycles respectively.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new method to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the carrier phase observation signals of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) during weak and moderate geomagnetic storms. We take a moderate geomagnetic storm that occurred on 12 May 2021 during the 25th solar cycle as an example. The results show that the newly defined PAS (Percentage of Affected Satellites) index shows significant anomaly changes during the moderate geomagnetic storm. Its variation trend has good correlations with the geomagnetic storm Kp index and Dst index. The anomaly stations are mainly distributed in the equatorial region and auroral region in the northern and southern hemispheres. The proposed PAS index has a good indication for both BDS2 and BDS3 satellites. We further validated this index by calculating the Precise Point Position (PPP) positioning error. We found that the anomaly period of PAS has strong consistency with the abnormal period of PPP positioning accuracy. This study could provide methodological support for the evaluation of the signal quality and analysis of positioning accuracy for the BeiDou satellite navigation system under different space weather conditions.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a smoothing modulus-based iterative method for solving the stochastic mixed complementarity problems (SMCP). The main idea is that we firstly transform the expected value model of SMCP into an equivalent nonsmooth system of equations, then obtain an approximation smooth system of equations by using a smoothing function, and finally solve it by the Newton method. We give the convergence analysis, and the numerical results show the effectiveness of the new method for solving the SMCP with symmetry coefficient matrices.

Abstract Sodium molybdate (Na−Mo−O) wrapped by graphene oxide (GO) composites have been prepared via a simple in‐situ precipitation method at room temperature. The composites are mainly constructed with one dimension (1D) ultra‐long sodium molybdate nanorods, which are wrapped by the flexible GO. The introduction of GO is expected to not merely provide more active sites for lithium‐ions storage, but also improve the charge transfer rate of the electrode. The testing electrochemical performances corroborated the standpoint: The Na−Mo−O/GO composites delivers specific capacities of 718 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1, and 570 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at a high rate of 500 mA g−1; for comparison, the bare Na−Mo−O nanorod shows a severe capacity decay, which deliver only 332 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1. In view of the cost‐efficient and less time‐consuming in synthesis, and one‐step preparation without further treatment, these Na−Mo−O nanorods/GO composites present potential and prospective anodes for LIBs.

Abstract

Conductive covalent organic frameworks (c-COFs) have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage because of their highly adjustable porosity and modifiable skeletons. Additionally, the fast carrier migration and ion catalysis requirements of micro-electrochemical energy storages (MEESs) are perfectly matched with c-COFs. Therefore, c-COFs show great potential and unlimited prospects in MEESs. However, the main organic component blocks electron conduction, and the internal active sites are difficult to fully utilize, which limits the application of c-COFs. In order to overcome these obstacles, a great deal of research has been conducted on conductivity enhancement. This review first focuses on the exploration of c-COFs in the field of electrical conductivity. Then, the mechanism and explanation of the effect of synthesis on electrical conductivity enhancement are discussed, which emphasizes the range and suitability of c-COFs in MEESs. Finally, the excellent performance characteristics of c-COFs are demonstrated from the MEES perspective, with key points and potential challenges addressed. This review also predicts the direction of development of c-COFs in the future.

Aquaculture is suffering from long-term water eutrophication in intensive models, whereas the knowledge of multi-strain/specie for improving water quality is extremely limited. Herein, we aimed to develop multi-strain tropical Bacillus spp. as a potential probiotic biocontrol agent for large-scale enhancement of mariculture water quality. Given the practical application, the optimum multi-strain tropical Bacillus spp. (B. flexus QG-3, B. flexus NS-4, and B. licheniformis XCG-6 with the proportion 5: 5: 4) as a probiotic biocontrol agent was screened and obtained, which effectively improved water quality by removing chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia-nitrogen, and nitrate and significantly inhibited Vibrio spp. even at relatively low bacterial concentrations (104 CFU/ml) in artificial feed wastewater and large-scale shrimp aquaculture ponds. More importantly, we found that the initial proportion of these three Bacillus sp. strains of multi-strain tropical Bacillus spp. markedly affected the final purification effects, whereas the initial concentration of that only influenced the purification rates at the early stage (0–48 h) instead of final purification effects. We reason that this multi-strain tropical Bacillus spp. as a good probiotic biocontrol agent could perform multiple actions, such as COD-degrading, nitrifying, denitrifying, and antagonistic actions, for large-scale enhancement of tropical aquaculture water. Additionally, the multi-strain tropical Bacillus spp. was safe for shrimp and could be stored for at least 240 days in spore form at room temperature. This multi-strain probiotic biocontrol agent may facilitate its adoption for further marine recirculating aquaculture system development and large-scale commercial application.

Abstract

Due to their highly changeable porosity and adaptable skeletons, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been frequently used in supercapacitors. Additionally, COFs are a wonderful match for supercapacitors’ requirements for quick carrier migration and ion catalysis. COFs exhibit significant potential and limitless opportunities in electrochemical storage supercapacitors. The applicability of COFs has, nonetheless, been limited because the primary organic component prevents electron conduction and the interior active sites are challenging to fully utilize. The conductivity enhancement of COFs has been the subject of extensive research to solve these challenges. This review begins by outlining the features of COFs in the context of their use in supercapacitors and their methods of synthesis. The application of previously published COF materials in supercapacitors were evaluated including electrode materials and solid-state devices. Finally, essential aspects and potential problems are discussed as the exceptional performance characteristics of COFs are illustrated from a supercapacitor standpoint. This review also forecasts the future of COF-based supercapacitor development.

Flowers of Inula britannica commercially serve as pharmaceutical herbs in the manufacturing of medicinal products. In the current study, sesquiterpenoids of I. britannica flowers’ extract and their potential effects against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells were investigated. Eight structurally diverse sesquiterpenoids, including one sesquiterpenoid dimer (1) and seven sesquiterpenoid monomers (2–8) were isolated from this source. The structures of all compounds were elucidated by 1D/2D NMR data, and their absolute configurations were discerned by single crystal X-ray diffraction. All of the compounds were tested for their potential effects against TNBC. Specifically, 5 displayed strong antiproliferative potency against TNBC cells with a high selective index (SI) on MCF-7 cells (SI > 4 of IC50 on MDA-MB-468/IC50 on MCF-7), and dimer 1 (IC50 = 8.82 ± 0.85 μM) showed better antiproliferative potency against MCF-7 cells than the other monomers did (2–8) (IC50 > 20 μM). To our best knowledge, compound 5 is the first sesquiterpenoid targeting TNBC cells.

Abstract

The B-box proteins (BBXs) are a family of zinc-finger transcription factors with one/two B-Box domain(s) and play important roles in plant growth and development as well as stress responses. Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.) is an important traditional medicinal and food supplement in China, and its genome has recently been released. However, comprehensive studies of BBX genes in Lycium species are lacking. In this study, 28 LbaBBX genes were identified and classified into five clades by a phylogeny analysis with BBX proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana and the LbaBBXs have similar protein motifs and gene structures. Promoter cis-regulatory element prediction revealed that LbaBBXs might be highly responsive to light, phytohormone, and stress conditions. A synteny analysis indicated that 23, 20, 8, and 5 LbaBBX genes were orthologous to Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum melongena, Capsicum annuum, and Arabidopsis thaliana, respectively. The gene pairs encoding LbaBBX proteins evolved under strong purifying selection. In addition, the carotenoid content and expression patterns of selected LbaBBX genes were analyzed. LbaBBX2 and LbaBBX4 might play key roles in the regulation of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin biosynthesis. Overall, this study improves our understanding of LbaBBX gene family characteristics and identifies genes involved in the regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis in wolfberry.

Background: Both Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort) and Tianma (Gastrodia elata Blume) have the effects of vasorelaxation and antihypertension. However, the effects of Tianshu Capsule (TSC, composed of Chuanxiong and Tianma in the mass ratio of 4:1) on antihypertensive activity have not been explored. This study aimed to investigate the eff ;ects of TSC on vascular tension and blood pressure in rats and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods: The vasorelaxant effect of TSC was explored on thoracic aortic rings (both intact endothelium and denuded) preincubated with phenylephrine (Phe) or potassium chloride (KCL). The mechanism was investigated in the presence of antagonists or blockers on aorta isolated from normotensive rats. The in vivo antihypertensive effect was assessed using a tail-cuff method on spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Results: TSC (0.125–4 mg/mL) produced a concentration-dependent vasorelaxation on aortic rings preincubated with Phe (1 μM) or KCL (60 mM). Removal of aorta endothelium markedly attenuated the TSC activity. Pretreatment of aortic rings with β-adrenoceptor blocker propranolol (1 μM), muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine (1 μM), cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin (IDO, 1 μM), adenylyl cyclase inhibitor 9-(tetrahydro-2-furanyl)-9H-purine-6-amine (SQ22536, 100 μM), K+ channel blockers 4-aminopyridine(4-AP, 1 mM) or barium chloride(BaCl2, 1 mM) followed by addition of Phe (1 μM) prior to TSC did not influence the TSC-induced relaxation. In contrast, the vasorelaxant effects of TSC were markedly inhibited by the NO synthase inhibitor L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10 μM), guanylyl cyclase inhibitor 1H- [1,2,4]oxadiazolo-[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ, 10 μM), K+ channel blockers, glibenclamide (100 μM) and clotrimazole (5 mM). Moreover, TSC (2 mg/mL, 4 mg/mL) inhibited CaCl2-induced contractions and caused a concentration-dependent rightward shift of the response curves. Additionally, TSC (2 mg/mL, 4 mg/mL) depressed the constriction caused by Phe (1 μM) in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. Furthermore, TSC (2.15 g/kg) lowered the systolic blood pressure (SBP), with no alteration in heart rate (HR) in SHRs. Conclusions: These findings demonstrated that TSC induced vasorelaxant effects via both endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent pathways. The NO/sGC/cGMP pathway, ATP-sensitive K+ channels, Ca2+-activated K+ channels, inhibition of extracellular Ca2+ influx and intracellular Ca2+ release were probably involved in this relaxation. The vasorelaxant effects of TSC may make the greatest contribution to the reduction in high blood pressure.

Abstract

Human serum albumin (HSA) is a key endogenous inhibitor of amyloid-β (Αβ) aggregation. In vitro HSA inhibits Aβ fibrillization and targets multiple species along the aggregation pathway including monomers, oligomers, and protofibrils. Amyloid inhibition by HSA has both pathological implications and therapeutic potential, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive. As a first step towards addressing this complex question, we studied the interactions of an Aβ42 monomer with HSA by molecular dynamics simulations. To adequately sample the conformational space, we adapted the replica exchange with solute tempering (REST2) method to selectively heat the Aβ42 peptide in the absence and presence of HSA. Aβ42 binds to multiple sites on HSA with a preference to domain III and adopts various conformations that all differ from the free state. The β-sheet abundances of H14-E22 and A30-M33 regions are significantly reduced by HSA, so are the β-sheet lengths. HSA shifts the conformational ensemble towards more disordered states and alters the β-sheet association patterns. In particular, the frequent association of Q15-V24 and N27-V36 regions into β-hairpin which is critical for aggregation is impeded. HSA primarily interacts with the latter β-region and the N-terminal charged residues. They form promiscuous interactions characterized by salt bridges at the edge of the peptide-protein interface and hydrophobic cores at the center. Consequently, intrapeptide interactions crucial for β-sheet formation are disrupted. Our work builds the bridge between the modification of Aβ conformational ensemble and amyloid inhibition by HSA. It also illustrates the potential of the REST2 method in studying interactions between intrinsically disordered peptides and globular proteins.

The R2R3-MYB is a large gene family involved in various plant functions, including carotenoid biosynthesis. However, this gene family lacks a comprehensive analysis in wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.) and other Solanaceae species. The recent sequencing of the wolfberry genome provides an opportunity for investigating the organization and evolutionary characteristics of R2R3-MYB genes in wolfberry and other Solanaceae species. A total of 610 R2R3-MYB genes were identified in five Solanaceae species, including 137 in wolfberry. The LbaR2R3-MYB genes were grouped into 31 subgroups based on phylogenetic analysis, conserved gene structures, and motif composition. Five groups only of Solanaceae R2R3-MYB genes were functionally divergent during evolution. Dispersed and whole duplication events are critical for expanding the R2R3-MYB gene family. There were 287 orthologous gene pairs between wolfberry and the other four selected Solanaceae species. RNA-seq analysis identified the expression level of LbaR2R3-MYB differential gene expression (DEGs) and carotenoid biosynthesis genes (CBGs) in fruit development stages. The highly expressed LbaR2R3-MYB genes are co-expressed with CBGs during fruit development. A quantitative Real-Time (qRT)-PCR verified seven selected candidate genes. Thus, Lba11g0183 and Lba02g01219 are candidate genes regulating carotenoid biosynthesis in wolfberry. This study elucidates the evolution and function of R2R3-MYB genes in wolfberry and the four Solanaceae species.

47. Spinel LiMn2O4 Cathode Materials in Wide Voltage Window: Single-Crystalline versus Polycrystalline

Single-crystal (SC) layered oxides as cathodes for Li-ion batteries have demonstrated better cycle stability than their polycrystalline (PC) counterparts due to the restrained intergranular cracking formation. However, there are rare reports on comparisons between single-crystal LiMn2O4 (SC-LMO) and polycrystalline LiMn2O4 (PC-LMO) spinel cathodes for Li-ion storage. In this work, the Li-ion storage properties of spinel LiMn2O4 single-crystalline and polycrystalline with similar particle sizes were investigated in a wide voltage window of 2–4.8 V vs. Li/Li+. The SC-LMO cathode exhibited a specific discharge capacity of 178 mA·h·g−1, which was a bit larger than that of the PC-LMO cathode. This is mainly because the SC-LMO cathode showed much higher specific capacity in the 3 V region (Li-ion storage at octahedral sites with cubic to tetragonal phase transition) than the PC-LMO cathode. However, unlike layered-oxide cathodes, the PC-LMO cathode displayed better cycle stability than the SC-LMO cathode. Our studies for the first time demonstrate that the phase transition-induced Mn(II) ion dissolution in the 3 V region rather than cracking formation is the limiting factor for the cycle performance of spinel LiMn2O4 in the wide voltage window.

BackgroundDepression is a long-term complex psychiatric disorder, and its etiology remains largely unknown. Valeriana jatamansi Jones ex Roxb (V. jatamansi) is used in the clinic for the treatment of depression, but there are insufficient reports of its antidepressive mechanisms and a poor understanding of its endogenous substance-related metabolism. The objective of this study was to identify biomarkers related to depression in serum samples and evaluate the antidepressive effects of the iridoid-rich fraction of V. jatamansi (IRFV) in a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model.MethodsHere, CUMS was used to establish a mouse model of depression. Behavioral and biochemical indicators were investigated to evaluate the pharmacodynamic effects. A comprehensive serum metabolomics study by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) approach was applied to investigate the pharmacological mechanism of IRFV in CUMS mouse. Subsequently, we used multivariate statistical analysis to identify metabolic markers, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal projection to latent structure with discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), to distinguish between the CUMS mouse and the control group.ResultsAfter IRFV treatment, the immobility time, sucrose preference, and monoamine neurotransmitter were improved. PCA scores showed clear differences in metabolism between the CUMS group and control group. The PLS-DA or OPLS-DA model exhibited 26 metabolites as biomarkers to distinguish between the CUMS mice and the control mouse. Moreover, IRFV could significantly return 21 metabolites to normal levels.ConclusionThe results confirmed that IRFV exerted an antidepressive effect by regulating multiple metabolic pathways, including the tricarboxylic acid cycle, the synthesis of neurotransmitters, and amino acid metabolism. These findings provide insights into the antidepressive mechanisms of IRFV.

The ascomycete fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is a devastating plant pathogen with a wide host range and worldwide distribution. Carbendazim has been widely used to control anthracnose caused by the C. gloeosporioides complex in China for more than 30 years and resistance to carbendazim has been reported in China. A total of 125 Colletotrichum isolates of strawberry and yam were collected from different geographical regions in Hubei Province, China. Approximately 52.8% of Colletotrichum spp. isolates showed resistance to carbendazim. The isolates tested in this study belong to four species, and the frequencies of resistant isolates differed across Colletotrichum species. Resistant isolates were found in C. siamense and C. fructicola. In contrast, all isolates of C. gloeosporioides and C. aenigma were sensitive to carbendazim. Highly carbendazim-resistant isolates harbored the E198A mutation in the β-tubulin 2 (TUB2) gene, whereas moderately carbendazim-resistant isolates harbored the F200Y mutation in the TUB2 gene. Carbendazim-sensitive Colletotrichum isolates in this study were not genetically similar enough to form a separate cluster from resistant isolates. The result of this study emphasizes the importance of knowing which Colletotrichum sp. is present, when strategies for disease control are made.

Computational photography has been a new research focus over the last two decades. Most of the computational imaging applications involve pixel-to-pixel correspondence adjustment between the spatial light modulator and the sensor. In this study, an accuracy pixel-to-pixel alignment method with six-axis adjustment is proposed. Specifically, the relations between the moiré fringe distribution and the six degree of freedom (DoF) displacements are characterized. A special pattern called five-grating pattern is designed for monitoring and adjusting the six DoF displacements in a four-step alignment procedure. Finally, the experimental results verify the performance of the proposed method by discussing the alignment accuracy.
