Southern Distinct Population Segment (sDPS) green sturgeon spawn solely in one stretch of the Sacramento River in California. Management of this spawning habitat is complicated by cold water temperature requirements for the conservation of winter-run Chinook salmon. This study assessed whether low incubation and rearing temperatures resulted in carryover effects across embryo to early juvenile life stages on scaling relationships in growth and metabolism in northern DPS green sturgeon used as a proxy for sDPS green sturgeon. Fish were incubated and reared at 11 °C and 15 °C, with a subset experiencing a reciprocal temperature transfer post-hatch, to assess recovery from cold incubation or to simulate a cold-water dam release which would chill rearing larvae. Growth and metabolic rate of embryos and larvae were measured to 118 days post hatch. Reciprocal temperature transfers revealed a greater effect of low temperature exposure during larval rearing rather than during egg incubation. While 11 °C eggs hatched at a smaller length, log-transformed length-weight relationships showed that these differences in developmental trajectory dissipated as individuals achieved juvenile morphology. However, considerable size-at-age differences persisted between rearing temperatures, with 15 °C fish requiring 60 days post-hatch to achieve 1 g in mass, whereas 11 °C fish required 120 days to achieve 1 g, resulting in fish of the same age at the completion of the experiment with a ca. 37-fold difference in weight. Consequently, our study suggests that cold rearing temperatures have far more consequential downstream effects than cold embryo incubation temperatures. Growth delays from 11 °C rearing temperatures would greatly increase the period of vulnerability to predation in larval green sturgeon. The scaling relationship between log-transformed whole-body metabolism and mass exhibited a steeper slope and thus an increased oxygen requirement with size in 11 °C reared fish, potentially indicating an energetically unsustainable situation. Understanding how cold temperatures affect green sturgeon ontogeny is necessary to refine our larval recruitment estimations for this threatened species.

Same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) is widespread among animals and is often treated as an evolutionary anomaly or mistake. An alternative view is that SSB occurs because individuals have broader or more permissive "mating filters." A broader filter means directing courtship toward anything that resembles a potential mate, while a narrower filter means having stricter criteria about when to court. Broader filters help ensure animals do not miss out on mating opportunities. However, it may be advantageous for individuals to narrow their mating filters under some conditions, such as when the costs of courtship increase because courting individuals are in poor condition. We examined whether mating filters, and the expression of SSB, is condition dependent in the Pacific field cricket (Teleogryllus oceanicus). When males were in poor condition (because they were reared on a poor diet), they courted other males less. However, condition did not influence courtship toward females. This finding provides evidence that animals can decrease their expression of SSB by flexibly narrowing their mating filters when in poor condition. Our results demonstrate the benefits of a mating filters approach to studying SSB--rather than being a mistake or an anomaly in need of special explanation, SSB may be better viewed as a consequence of flexible, condition-dependent changes in mating behavior. Such an approach can be applied to other contexts where behavior is directed toward unintended targets. Boreal lakes experience pronounced seasonal variation in abiotic factors, especially light, temperature, and oxygen. A deep boreal humic lake was sampled year‐round to test putative changes in total fish catch, species composition, catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE), habitat use, fish size, and condition. Monthly sampling was conducted in Lake Pääjärvi, southern Finland, during one full year in 2020–2021 as well as in March and August 2021 and 2022. The fish community was dominated by cyprinid species in all months, but the percentage of percid fish caught increased during the warm summer period. Most fish were caught in littoral habitats and the highest catches occurred in summer, but some species (e.g., ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernua, and pikeperch, Sander lucioperca) remained abundant in the winter catch. The body size of fish was larger in the winter catch, while condition factor was higher in summer for most species. Fish species proportions in total catch, CPUE, and average size of fish were closest to the annual mean values in September, which may be used as the optimal period to monitor fish communities of similar deep boreal lakes. Our findings highlight the need for year‐round research to reveal the impacts of rising temperatures and diminishing ice‐covered periods in fish communities and lake food webs. Ice hockey requires two levels of specific agility, involving different abilities, where the level of agility and their constraints might vary by the performance level. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the relationship level between on-ice and off-ice change of directional speed (COD) of youth hockey players at two performance levels. The study was conducted during the hockey season, including U16 elite players (n = 40) and U16 sub-elite players (n = 23). Both groups performed specific on-ice fitness tests (4-m acceleration, 30-m sprint, and 6 x 54-m tests, an on-ice Illinois agility test with and without a puck) and off-ice tests consisting of non-arm swing countermovement jumps (CMJs), broad jumps, and pull-ups. Pearson correlation showed that the acceleration performance of elite players was related to the CMJ (r = -0.46) and the broad jump (r = -0.31). Sub-elite players showed stronger dependence of the 30-m sprint on the CMJ (r = -0.77) and the broad jump (r = -0.43), the relation of pulls ups (r = -0.62) and the CMJ (r = -0.50) to the 6 x 54-m test, yet no association to acceleration. Elite players differ between off-ice and on-ice performance constraints, where their skating sprint is less related to their vertical and horizontal take-off abilities than in sub-elite players. Sub-elite players' off-ice power determines their sprint and repeated sprint performance. COD performance of elite and sub-elite players is based on different conditioning constraints. In developing nations such as Nigeria, the housing industry lacks appropriate and highquality housing. One of the housing development concepts and shelter delivery systems in practice in developing nations Nigeria inclusive are public, private and public–private. These three delivery strategies involves in mass housing production, although the bulk of these mass housing are not sustainable. This study examines at the conditions of mass housing delivered by the public, public–private, and private sectors in Ilorin, Nigeria. Quantitative and qualitative research approaches were employed for the study and both primary and secondary data were utilised. Multistage sampling technique was adopted to sample 27% of the 4166 households' population. A set of questionnaire was administered to 1125 household heads, from 895 houses of the Public, 203 of public–private–partnership and 27 of private developers. Data were evaluated with descriptive statistics and multiple analyses of variance (MANOVA) to get the variation in housing elements condition based on the three-delivery strategy. According to the study, private had walls with highest percentage of very good (41.0%), good conditions (51.6%), and public had walls with 33.1% very good, 36.6% good conditions. However, 13.0% of PPP wall are in poor condition, and 80.1% of walls are only fair, comparisons of the condition of housing elements in the three strategies revealed that all the parameters of houses were found to have significant differences with p values reported for the comparison were observed to be less than 0.05 confidence level (p < 0.05). The study suggests among others that public–private partnership delivery strategy should be given more attention by the government to ensure good quality delivery and sustainability of mass housing. Recent advancements in modeling suggest that microbial inactivation in leafy greens follows a nonlinear pattern, rather than the simple first‐order kinetics. In this study, we evaluated 17 inactivation models commonly used to describe microbial decline and established the conditions that govern microbial survival on leafy greens. Through a systematic review of 65 articles, we extracted 530 datasets to model the fate of Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 on leafy greens. Various factor analysis methods were employed to evaluate the impact of identified conditions on survival metrics. A two‐parameter model (jm2) provided the best fit to most of both natural and antimicrobial‐induced persistence datasets, whereas the one‐parameter exponential model provided the best fit to less than 20% of the datasets. The jm2 model (adjusted R2 =.89) also outperformed the exponential model (adjusted R2 =.58) in fitting the pooled microbial survival data. In the context of survival metrics, the model averaging approach generated higher values than the exponential model for >4 log reduction times (LRTs), suggesting that the exponential model may be overpredicting inactivation at later time points. The random forest technique revealed that temperature and inoculum size were common factors determining inactivation in both natural and antimicrobial‐induced die‐offs.. Trees provide multiple ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, hydrological regulation and habitat for arboreal animals. However, they are often removed to support agricultural enterprises. Despite the importance of tree remnants, we know relatively little about how soils differ across sites of varying condition. Here, we describe a study where we examined the relative effects of trees, compared with unvegetated interspaces, on soil functions in remnant patches at sites in good and poor condition in two eucalypt communities in an irrigation area in eastern Australia. We found that, in general, carbon and nutrient cycling were relatively greater beneath trees, and in surface soils, but there were no clear trends in relation to site condition. The values of most soil attributes (e.g., soluble and exchangeable cations, nitrogen, phosphorus) were greater beneath trees, indicating strong fertile island effects in both communities. Overall, our study confirms the importance of trees in remnant patches in agricultural landscapes, particularly those in sites of poor condition. It also suggests that soil processes may still be relatively intact, even in sites in poor condition. Our study reinforces the need to protect trees in remnant woodland reserves to maintain critical ecosystem functions related to nutrient retention. These remnants are important for achieving sustainable management of agricultural systems.

Ultrasound imaging can be used as an effective tool to measure the reproductive status and condition of sharks. This usually requires restraint of the subject, which is not feasible in the wild when the target species is of conservation concern and very large, as is the case for whale sharks. Our study invoked a behavioral response in free-swimming whale sharks that allowed snorkelers to image internal organs and structures using a submersible ultrasound scanner linked to an iPhone in an underwater housing. We were able to reliably locate and monitor the heart and other internal organs inside the body cavity, structures inside the head, and image skin and muscle in the dorsal surface of the sharks. This study investigates the predictors of financial distress of banks in Sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, we examine the relationship between bank financial distress and the 5Cs (i.e., Character, Capacity, Capital, Condition, and Collateral). We use logistic regression and panel data from 228 listed and non-listed Sub-Sahara Africa Banks over the period 2006 to 2016 to test the hypotheses. We find that the rating measures of capacity (cost to income), capital (leverage), and condition (loan loss reserves to gross loan and inflation) positively affect the financial distress of the banks in Sub-Saharan Africa. Control of corruption decreases the probability of financial distress; however, the collateral and character indicators do not predict the financial distress of the banks. This study adds to the debate on how Character, Capacity, Capital, Condition, and Collateral affect bank financial distress in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region with high bank insolvency but research remains scant. This study explores the life‐history parameters of female Merluccius capensis off South Africa (N = 1819) during 2014–2016, including gonadosomatic index (GSI), length‐at‐maturity, length–weight relationships, and condition indices (relative condition [k] and Fulton's condition factor [K]). We detected weak indications of two peaks of spawning within the year, the first in austral autumn from March to May, whereas the other in austral spring around August. GSI was slightly higher in spring and autumn, though still low at all maturity stages (≤7%), though the opposite was true for the actively spawning stage (≥7%) as well as access to less such data during winter‐ and summertime. The length (L) at 50% maturity was around 38 cm (L50), though differences occurred between the two applied staging methods, histology and visual (macroscopic) classification, when L approached infinity. The latter method presented underestimated length at maturity values at the 75 and 95 percentiles (48 and 60 cm) compared to the corresponding percentiles given by histology (50 and 65 cm). There were trivial across‐method differences in L50. However, we found a clear reduction in L50 in view of published information in prior years when this estimate was 48 (1985), 42 (2008), 53 (2011), and 24.8 (2015) cm. Overall, L explained 90% of the variation in whole body weight (W). As the bootstrapped, grand mean growth coefficient was b = 2.98, indicating a slight allometric growth function, there were no significant variations between years, though an isometric growth existed for 2016 with b = 3.0, whereas for 2014 and 2015 this b was 2.98 and 2.93, respectively. In terms of demography, females <60 cm generally showed isometric growth (b = 3) as opposed to allometric growth (b = 2.95) at >60 cm. The relative condition index (k = 1) exhibited higher values than Fulton's K, which was 0.80. Overall, the maternal stock of M. capensis along the south coast seems to be in good condition and likely spawns throughout the year, but we found that the macroscopic data tend to give biased maturity ogives. Wheelchair basketball (WB) is a sport modality adapted for people with disabilities who present functional classification (FC) according to their mobility, from 1.0 for players with lesser functional capacity up to 4.5 for great mobility and trunk control players. This study aimed to analyze and compare the external load (EL) and the internal load (IL) of the WB players according to their FC in 5 × 5 simulation game tasks. The main objective of this task was to develop a simulated game in which two teams of five players faced each other to resemble the physical demands of an official match. The development of these tasks allowed for the players to learn the different systems of play, and to improve tactical skills. To conduct the study, 12 (male) national professional WB players (years: 30.7 ± 4.82 and WB experience: 5 ± 1.43) participated in the study and were grouped according to FC. WIMU PROTM devices monitored the EL manufactured by RealTrack Systems in Almería, Spain, and to measure the player's IL, GarminTM Heart Rate (HR) bands were used (GarminTM in Olathe, KS, USA). The EL variables were divided as kinematic (distance, explosive distance, acc, dec, max. acc, max. dec, average speed, max. speed) and neuromuscular (player load, impact). The IL variables were average HR, max. HR and %max. HR. The main results show that players with greater functional capacity (FC = 4.0) developed higher values in the IL and neuromuscular variables analyzed (p < 0.05), as well as in some kinematic variables like distance, dec and average speed (p < 0.05). This information is relevant because it helps to personalize the training load based on competitive demands and create a gradual and adaptable training program. Īnanga (Galaxias maculatus) is a widespread freshwater fish, found around coastal New Zealand, Chatham Islands, southern Australia and southern South America, exhibiting both diadromous and land-locked life history patterns. We assessed population size structure, size at maturity, timing of reproduction, and post-reproductive survival in the Waikouaiti and Kakanui rivers, two regionally important G. maculatus populations in southern New Zealand. Size at maturity varied between rivers and sexes, with males generally maturing at smaller sizes than females. The timing of reproduction and recruitment was observed to vary across a relatively small spatial scale. Population length-frequencies indicated that both populations exhibited annual population dynamics, with most individuals spawning in their first year, then apparently dying soon afterwards (as indicated by a marked drop in post-spawning abundance). However, a few individuals with recently spent or resting gonads were present over the winter months, indicating some post-spawning survival. There was a lower frequency of exceptionally large (putatively 1+) individuals than reported for other populations around New Zealand and elsewhere, suggesting over-winter survival following spawning varies. Based on the variation in life history characters over small spatial scales, we suggest that management of regionally important G. maculatus populations should be based on catchment level information. There is still a need to investigate the relationships between glycophytes and halophytes and the many biotic and abiotic factors in their natural environments. Therefore, we study the effects of the type of environment on the ecophysiological responses and condition of the glycophyte Elder Sambucus nigra L., the macrophyte Common Reed Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., the facultative halophyte Weeping Alkaligrass Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl, and the obligate halophyte Common Glasswort Salicornia europaea L. in a saline-disturbed anthropogenic region of central Poland. We analyzed the effects of salinity, acidity, and soil organic matter on shoot length, lipoperoxidation, and proline in roots and green parts, and evaluated plant responses to environmental disturbance, which allowed for the comparison of adaptation strategies. The studies were carried out in (1) "sodium production" (near sodium factories), (2) "anthropogenic environments" (waste dumps, agroecosystems, calcium deposits, post-production tanks), (3) "wetland environments" (near river channels and riparian areas), and (4) "control" (natural, unpolluted environments). Green parts of plants are better suited to indicate environmental stress than roots. Their higher structural MDA membrane damage is related to the transport of toxic ions to the shoots by a rapid transpiration stream in the xylem. We found high salinity to be the main factor inducing growth and found it to be correlated with the high pH effect on proline increase in glycophytes (Elder, Reed) and Weeping Alkaligrass, in contrast to Common Glasswort. We suggest that proline accumulation allows osmotic adjustment in the green parts of reeds and alkaligrasses, but may have another function (in Elder). Common Glasswort accumulates large amounts of Na+, which is energetically more effective than proline accumulation for osmotic adjustment. Organic matter affects plant growth and proline levels, but soil salinity and pH alter nutrient availability. Plant distribution along the salinity gradient indicates that Elder is the most salt-sensitive species compared to Reed, Alkaligrass, and Glasswort. Salinity and the lack of control of thick reeds, which compete with other plant groups, affect the distribution of halophytes in saline environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Our aim was to predict the maturity (will spawn or immature) of Sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria in Alaska for past years during a period when macroscopic data are not of utility and histological observations are not available. Methods: In a previous study, female maturity was determined using histology and a model was developed that predicted maturity using maternal length, age, and relative condition. We used this published model to predict the maturity of individual Sablefish collected annually in the same area on the same dates. The maturity predictions were used to create predicted time series of maturity at age for surveys conducted over 22 years. Result: A k‐means cluster analysis of annual maturity parameters revealed that data should be split into two clusters. These groups were chronologically sequential (1998–2010 and 2011–2019), with two exceptions: 2015 and 2017 were assigned to the early time period. We created two chronological time blocks by incorporating the two outlier years into the late period post hoc, as we are not aware of mechanisms that may have caused these two outliers, and it is important for stock assessment to capture the signal and not the noise. Sablefish in the later period were predicted to mature later than fish in the earlier period; age at 50% maturity was 5.5 years in the early period and 6.8 years in the later period, and the slope was shallower in the later period. Conclusion: There are often gaps in reliable maturity data. This case study illustrates that limited histological data sets can be used to predict maturity in years without ovary samples and illustrates how these data can be grouped based on similarities and chronology for use in stock assessment. We recommend more histological studies in the future to test assumptions of the predictive model, and we recommend evaluations of other factors, such as environmental time series, that may be drivers of annual maturity. Impact statementThe number of fish that will spawn depends partially on the age that fish mature. This study provides a time series of the proportion of Sablefish at each age that will spawn over a 22‐year period, using a predictive model. Context: Animal-borne devices can affect animal survival, reproduction, and behaviour through both the addition of weight and bulk and the direct effects of initial and subsequent capture. Researchers commonly employ a general rule of thumb that weight of the device must be less than 5% of bodyweight for terrestrial animals; however, this threshold has little empirical basis. Aims: We evaluated the effects of environmental variables, repeated capture, and weight of animal-borne devices on bodyweight in free-ranging feral cats. Methods: We recaptured feral cats at varying frequencies, wearing GPS and/or VHF collars that ranged from 0.29% to 4.88% of bodyweight, and recorded change in cat weight over time. Key results: Collar weight as a percentage of bodyweight was not a significant predictor of feral cat weight change. Rather, change in bodyweight was best described by a negative relationship with an increasing temperature and number of captures, and a positive relationship with time since collar attachment. Conclusions: Capture had a significant influence on feral cat weight but collar weights up to 5% of bodyweight did not significantly contribute to weight loss. However, the absence of control cats without collars hindered definitive conclusions on the effect of collar weight on cat weight change. Implications: Researchers should space capture and handling events more than 30 days apart to reduce effects of weight loss from capture and handling. Researchers should also consider increasing collar weight and reducing frequency of capture (where collars are less than 5% of bodyweight), particularly if cat bodyweight is a parameter of interest. Feral cats are one of the most harmful invasive species in Australia, and are often caught and collared as part of scientific study to investigate their impacts and inform management. We evaluated the impacts of this process on feral cats. Even though collar weight had no impact, repeated recaptures reduced cat weight. Researchers should consider prioritising fewer capture and handling events over collar-weight reductions, or offset the effect of repeated capture by allowing recovery time greater than 30 days before subsequent recapture attempts. Objective: We developed a novel, simple approach to summarize variation in quantile regression estimates of weight at length across multiple levels of grouping factors (locations or years) and demonstrate its utility for comparing fish condition using Arctic Grayling Thymallus arcticus data. We compared condition among 28 geographic locations of Arctic Grayling populations and among 12 and 25 years for two populations. Methods: We summarized variation among locations and among years within locations using percentiles (maximum, 75th, 50th, 25th, and minimum) of predicted quantiles of weight at length, allowing us to simplify the distributions of predicted quantiles of weight into highest to lowest fourths (quartiles) across locations or years. One part of this summary information, 75th percentiles of median (0.50 quantile) predicted weights at length across populations, is identical to summary statistics used to develop standard weight equations for computing relative weights. However, our approach avoids biases inherent in fitting a single standard weight equation and can accommodate among‐fish variation in weight at length via multiple quantiles when developing reference standards for comparative or diagnostic purposes. A selected new weight at length can be compared with the distribution of quantile predictions among locations in terms of weights or as proportionate weights similar to relative weight. Result: Arctic Grayling in 28 geographic locations, from the southern limit of their distribution in Montana and Wyoming north through Canada and Alaska to the Arctic coast, had considerable variation in allometric exponents in weight–length relationships and in predicted weights at length. Predicted weights of Arctic Grayling for heavier fish (0.90 quantiles) in populations with less (lower quartiles) to greater (upper quartiles) weights were 127–194 g and 336–510 g at total lengths = 250 and 350 mm, respectively. Lighter fish (0.10 quantiles) in populations with less to greater weights were 100–133 g and 259–364 g, at the same total lengths, respectively. We provide statistical code and tabled values that can be used as reference standards as a replacement for standard weight equations for comparing new samples of fishes. We also quantified annual variation in condition within two intensively sampled populations, the Kuparuk River in Alaska (25 years, 1985–2012) and Red Rock Creek, Montana (12 years, 1994–2016). Annual distributions of weights at length were greater for Arctic Grayling in Red Rock Creek than those in the Kuparuk River. Variation in predicted distributions of weights at length among years was also greater for Red Rock Creek, although fish from both locations exhibited substantial among‐year variation that exceeded half the variation estimated among geographic locations. Conclusion: Our estimates indicated that there was substantial spatial and temporal variation in condition of Arctic Grayling that might be investigated further to help understand constraints on populations to aid conservation and management of the species. Our summary approach can be easily extended to other investigations of fish weight at length relationships where multiple quantile estimates are made across many levels of grouping factors. Юридические тексты, регулирующие общественные отношения, являются ключевым элементом правовой и языковой культуры общества. Они обеспечивают правовое взаимодействие между государством и гражданами, способствуют пониманию и выполнению правовых требований, и играют незаменимую роль в формировании правовой практики. В заключении подчеркивается, что изучение семантики условия в юридических текстах важно для правильного понимания и применения правовых норм.

Anodontostoma chacunda is a commercial fish species in the market and is usually consumed in fresh, smoked, and dried forms. This study investigated the population structure, length-weight relationships (LWR), condition factor (KF), size at sexual maturity (Lm), and breeding season of A. chacunda in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, using the data collected from January to December 2020. A total of 1061 individuals were collected in the sampling period with the help of fishers. Total length (TL) and body weight (BW) were measured using a measuring board and an electronic balance. The TL ranged from 12.50 to 26.70 cm. The allometric coefficient (b) value was 3.34, indicating positive allometric growth in this species. The fish is in good condition, evidenced by its condition factor (KF) ranging between 0.88 and 1.73. Maturity size ranged from 15.40 to 16.80 cm (TL) based on three distinguished models. Spawning time lasts from January to May and from September to December. The peak spawning time was December of A. chacunda in the Bay of Bengal. This information could prove valuable for fisheries researchers and biologists, facilitating efforts toward the conservation and sustainable management of this species.

Temperature fluctuations impact the distribution of various marine fish species and typically result in distributional changes, seeing either a geographical expansion or, possibly, a retraction. Survival and fitness in the new habitat depend, however, on the species' adaptability capacity. Here, we describe changes in geographical distribution of Icelandic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) based on annual survey data for a 38-year period, 1985–2022. Most of the stock is in the warm waters off the south and west coasts of Iceland (south area), but a small proportion in colder water masses off the north and east coasts (north area). Due to high recruitment, density increased greatly in both areas in the years 2001–2005. Haddock density was usually higher in the south area in 1985–2004, in the north area in 2005–2014, but similar in both areas in 2015–2022. Haddock condition was found to be influenced by both temperature and haddock density. Density-dependent factors influenced haddock mean weight, which dropped considerable during times of high haddock density. Capelin was of great importance as a diet, especially in the south, where stomach fullness decreased considerably when capelin was not a part of the diet. Food availability seems to be highly variable between the two areas but more stable in the north, where fluctuations in capelin fullness were small. Even though favourable environmental conditions may result in increased haddock density in the colder waters in the north, lower condition indicates that the northern area may be less suitable for this species. Objectives. The purpose of the study was to substantiate the influence of physical activity on stress-associated conditions in higher education students. Materials and methods. The dataset for building the models consisted of 1115 observations, 16 independent and 3 dependent variables. As the main method we used the random forest method, the idea of which is to obtain a forecast by aggregating the predictions of a set of individual decision trees, each of which is trained on a data subset isolated from the studied sample. Results. Physical activity (PA) was found to be the most important factor in predicting stress-related conditions in university students. In addition, PA levels involving moderate and high levels of energy expenditure, as well as the number of stressful events experienced, played a significant role in predicting stress among students. In order to predict stress-related conditions in higher education students, the models "Stress", "Increased anxiety", and "Risk of PTSD" were built using the random forest method. The model "Stress" had the highest quality: its Accuracy was 0.77, Recall - 0.86, Precision - 0.79, and F1 Score - 0.82. The "PTSD Risk" model correctly predicted 78% of cases that indicates its good overall performance, however it correctly identified only 23% of the students who actually had the signs of this disorder. Regarding the state of anxiety, given that it is less stable than stress and PTSD, which can make model training difficult, the model built had an average accuracy of 56%, as well as reduced completeness and balance. Conclusions. Models for predicting increased anxiety and identifying students with signs of PTSD require further improvement. The implementation of developed models allows to quickly identify the manifestations of stress-related conditions in higher education students and to take the necessary measures based on the engagement in PA to prevent the development of stress-related disorders. Objective: Energy density (ED) estimates for marine forage species have been limited, impeding our understanding of this important trophic level. We studied the EDs of eight key forage species: Alewife Alosa pseudoharengus, Atlantic Herring Clupea harengus, Silver Hake Merluccius bilinearis, Northern Sand Lance Ammodytes dubius, Atlantic Mackerel Scomber scombrus, Butterfish Peprilus triacanthus, northern shortfin squid Illex illecebrosus, and longfin inshore squid Doryteuthis pealeii (also known as Loligo pealeii). Methods: Samples were obtained during spring and fall bottom trawl surveys across five regions (Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank, southern New England, northern Middle Atlantic Bight, and southern Middle Atlantic Bight) from 2017 to 2019. In the laboratory, we developed predictive relations between the percent dry weight (%DW) and ED (kJ/g wet weight) determined by proximate composition analysis (n = 606; r2 = 0.76–0.98) to estimate the ED of additional samples (n = 4583). For each species, we modeled ED as a function of size, depth, season, and year (as factors) as well as location (latitude, longitude) using generalized additive models (GAMs). Result: Alewife, Atlantic Herring, Northern Sand Lance, Atlantic Mackerel, and Butterfish were classified as high‐quality prey (ED > 6 kJ/g), although Atlantic Herring ED was nearly half the values reported in earlier studies. Silver Hake, northern shortfin squid, and longfin inshore squid were classified as moderate‐quality prey (4 kJ/g < ED < 6 kJ/g). Most species had higher EDs in the fall following summer feeding than in the spring after spawning and/or reduced winter feeding. The best‐fitting GAMs included weight, depth (by season), season, and year effects for most species. Location (by season) explained significant amounts of variation. Conclusion: Observed variation in ED across regions, species, seasons, and years provides the empirical data necessary to consider hypotheses related to "upstream" regulation of ED (via environmental drivers and productivity) and "downstream" effects on recruitment for these forage species as well the species that prey on them. As an integral part of a machine, gears are subject to wear, which is influenced by a number of factors. For polymer gears in particular, the uncertainties due to wear are high. These uncertainties outweigh the advantages of polymer gears, such as lower inertia. Improved condition monitoring, for example, with better data acquisition, could reduce these uncertainties and is therefore of great interest. This study addresses the challenges of condition monitoring in polymer gears by investigating the integration of sensors directly onto the gears for improved sensitivity. A compact sensor module mounted on a polymer gear is presented to demonstrate the benefits of integrated sensors. The research compares the effectiveness of integrated acceleration and temperature sensors with state of the art external methods. The results show that the in situ sensor module (ISM) provides reliable measurements for condition monitoring with integrated sensors. A comparative analysis with methods based on the current state of research highlights the increased sensitivity of condition monitoring based on the ISM acceleration sensors compared to traditional bearing block sensors. This increased sensitivity shows a clear advantage of integrated sensors over established methods. The temperature curve of the integrated sensors is sensitive to abrasive wear and gear failure, indicating the wider potential of integrated temperature sensors. In conclusion, this research lays the foundation for advanced condition monitoring using integrated sensors in polymer gears. The male genitals of internal fertilisers evolve rapidly and divergently, and sexual selection is generally responsible for this. Many sexually selected traits are condition‐dependent—with their expression dependent upon the resources available to be allocated to them—as revealed by genetic or environmental manipulations of condition. However, it is not clear whether male genitals are also condition‐dependent. Here we manipulate condition in two ways (via inbreeding and diet) to test the condition‐dependence of the genital arch of Drosophila simulans. We found that genital size but not genital shape suffered from inbreeding depression, whereas genital size and shape were affected by dietary manipulation of condition. The differential effects of these treatments likely reflect underlying genetic architecture that has been shaped by past selection: inbreeding depression is only expected when traits have a history of directional selection, while diet impacts traits regardless of historical selection. Age often indicates phenotypic quality, ecological experience or social status in animals. Consequently, behavioural signals in territorial animals that accurately convey age to potential mates or rivals might provide useful information for both signaller and receiver about the likelihood of aggression. We tested whether male territorial yodels convey information about age in the common loon, Gavia immer. Using a sample of male loons of known age, we found that the dominant frequency of Fintro3, a dominant syllable in the beginning sequence of a male yodel, increases strongly with age, but we were unable to replicate an earlier finding linking Fintro3 to body mass. We hypothesize that older male loons, which yodel more often than young males, might do so as a means to advertise their age and higher likelihood of aggression to potential rivals. • We tested whether male yodels convey information about age in common loons. • Dominant frequency of a dominant syllable (Fintro3) in male yodels increased with age. • Fintro3 was found previously to decrease with body mass, but not in our study. • Age may have a more significant effect on yodel acoustics than body mass. • Older males may yodel more often to advertise their age and likelihood of aggression. Workers' depression is an important issue, with the prevalence higher in women than in men. This study aimed to identify the effects of workplace violence exposure and psychosocial working conditions on depressive symptoms in female workers in South Korea. This study included 15 605 female wageworkers who participated in the fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey. Logistic regression analyses were implemented to identify the factors that affected their depression. The female workers reported increased frequency of symptoms of depression when there was humiliating behavior from co-workers (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.999) or physical violence from clients (aOR = 1.609). In psychosocial working environments, they reported a greater frequency of depressive symptoms with high quantitative demands (aOR = 1.498), high emotional demands (aOR = 1.085), lower colleague's support (aOR = 1.566), or lack of support from supervisors at the workplace (aOR = 1.707). Liver condition is hypothesized to be a better condition index for juvenile cod than other somatic condition indices, since cod store most of their excess energy in their liver. It is suggested that population changes in liver condition can be used as a proxy for overwinter mortality. Here, we have collected 0- and 1-group cod from the same cohort in the Barents Sea before and at the end of the winter season. We have taken measurements for somatic- and liver-based condition indices, as well as enumerating nematode endoparasites found in each individual cod. The average wet weight of sampled cod increased by 85% (approx. 0.4% day−1) from 6.0 to 10.1 g from September to February, while the average liver wet weight decreased by 15%. The relative water content of the liver also increased significantly over the winter, resulting in a 42% reduction in average dry liver weight from 0.116 to 0.067 g over the 4–5-month period between samplings. About 30% of the 1-group cod surviving the winter had less than 20% of the liver energy content of same-sized 0-group cod. The liver condition was also 5–10% lower in cod with high nematode endoparasite load than the cod without nematode endoparasites. The significance of the loss of liver energy content is discussed in relation to the marked seasonality combined with climate change and the challenges this imposes on the survival of 0-group cod in high-latitude environments during their first winter. An animal's behaviour can influence many variables, such as its energy reserves, its risk of injury or mortality, and its rate of reproduction. To identify the optimal action in a given situation, these various effects can be compared in the common currency of reproductive value. While this idea has been widely used to study trade‐offs between pairs of variables, e.g. between energy gain versus survival, here we present a unified framework that makes explicit how these various trade‐offs fit together. This unification covers a wide range of biological phenomena, highlighting similarities in their logical structure and helping to identify knowledge gaps. To fill one such gap, we present a new model of foraging under the risk of predation and damage accumulation. Many published coral disease pathogen transmission and heat stress studies lack consistent acclimation periods in their experimental design, making it difficult to interpret or compare results between studies. To determine if condition of coral tissue changes during laboratory acclimation, thus potentially influencing susceptibility to stressors, we conducted a histological analysis on fragments of the Caribbean staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, during a 9-day acclimation period. We found a significant decline in overall condition between clippings taken initially and on day 2, and significant improvements in two key surface body wall parameters from day 2 to day 9. These findings indicate that A. cervicornis has a delayed response to new environmental conditions and therefore needs at least a 4-day acclimation period, and when possible, 9 days or more prior to experimentation. Ultrasound imaging can be used as an effective tool to measure the reproductive status and condition of sharks. This usually requires restraint of the subject, which is not feasible in the wild when the target species is of conservation concern and very large, as is the case for whale sharks. Our study invoked a behavioral response in free-swimming whale sharks that allowed snorkelers to image internal organs and structures using a submersible ultrasound scanner linked to an iPhone in an underwater housing. We were able to reliably locate and monitor the heart and other internal organs inside the body cavity, structures inside the head, and image skin and muscle in the dorsal surface of the sharks. The technique is evaluated as a means for assessing the condition and reproductive status of free-swimming whale sharks.

ABSTRACT: Microbiome of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) has been identified as one of the crucial factors influencing the health and condition of domestic animals. The global poultry industry faces the challenge of understanding the complex relationship between gut microbiota composition and performance-related traits in birds. Considerable variation exists in the results of correlational studies using either 16S rRNA profiling or metagenomics to identify bacterial taxa associated with performance, productivity, or condition in poultry (e.g., body weight, growth rate, feeding efficiency, or egg yield). In this review, we survey the existing reports, discuss variation in research approaches, and identify bacterial taxa consistently linked to improved or deteriorated performance across individual poultry-focused studies. Our survey revealed high methodological heterogeneity, which was in contrast with vastly uniform focus of the research mainly on the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus) as a model. We also show that the bacterial taxa most frequently used in manipulative experiments and commercial probiotics intended for use in poultry (e.g., species of Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Enterococcus, or Bifidobacterium) do not overlap with the bacteria consistently correlated with their improved performance (Candidatus Arthromitus, Methanobrevibacter). Our conclusions urge for increased methodological standardization of the veterinary research in this field. We highlight the need to bridge the gap between correlational results and experimental applications in animal science. To better understand causality in the observed relationships, future research should involve a broader range of host species that includes both agricultural and wild models, as well as a broader range of age groups.

This study was conducted to evaluate the production performance between Abra and Bolinao, Pangasinan origin of True-to-type Bolinao native chicken under Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology ASIST (demo-site) in Lagangilang, Abra. The study was conducted for eight months from August 2022-March 2023. The average monthly egg production ranges from 7-14 with a mean of 10.27 from group A (Abra origin), while 5-12 eggs per hen in group B (Bolinao origin) with a mean of 8.93, hen-house egg production (HHEP) is higher in group A (34.13%) compared to group B with 29.65%. The average egg mass is quietly higher also in group A (14.54%), compared to group B with 13.10%, however, a significant T-test (0.05)higher egg weight is observed in group B (44.10 grams), compared to group A (42.46 grams), while in feed conversion ratio (FCR), better efficiency is observed in group B (2.72)which is significant at 0.05 level, compared to group A (2.83). In terms of hatchability rate, group A performed better (47.83%), compared to group B with 41.01%, while the weight of chicks upon hatching observed an insignificant result between the two groups with a mean of 27.49grams in group A and 27.09grams in group B respectively

Many studies assume that it is beneficial for individuals of a species to be heavier, or have a higher body condition index (BCI), without accounting for the physiological relevance of variation in the composition of different body tissues. We hypothesized that the relationship between BCI and masses of physiologically important tissues (fat and lean) would be conditional on annual patterns of energy acquisition and expenditure. We studied three species with contrasting ecologies in their respective natural ranges: an obligate hibernator (Columbian ground squirrel, Urocitellus columbianus), a facultative hibernator (black-tailed prairie dog, Cynomys ludovicianus), and a food-caching non-hibernator (North American red squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). We measured fat and lean mass in adults of both sexes using quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR). We measured body mass and two measures of skeletal structure (zygomatic width and right hind foot length) to develop sex- and species-specific BCIs, and tested the utility of BCI to predict body composition in each species. Body condition indices were more consistently, and more strongly correlated, with lean mass than fat mass. The indices were most positively correlated with fat when fat was expected to be very high (pre-hibernation prairie dogs). In all cases, however, BCI was never better than body mass alone in predicting fat or lean mass. While the accuracy of BCI in estimating fat varied across the natural histories and annual energetic patterns of the species considered, measuring body mass alone was as effective, or superior in capturing sufficient variation in fat and lean in most cases. Invertebrate larvae are often abundant in the surface ocean, which plays a key role in their dispersal and connectivity. Pelagic microhabitats characterized by small‐scale hydrographic variability are complex and ubiquitous in the coastal ocean, but their study is challenging, and they have been largely neglected in meroplankton ecology. Surface convergences, i.e., surface microhabitats featuring convergent horizontal currents, may aggregate the last larval stage of the American lobster and could provide shelter and food for Stage IV postlarvae and thus enhance their condition. We tested these hypotheses by conducting a series of cruises in the southwestern Gulf of Maine in summer 2021, sampling 15 paired sets of potential convergences and off‐convergence unstructured habitat. We measured postlarval abundance, surface hydrography, acoustic backscatter, and circulation. Experiments and image analysis compared condition, color, and morphology of postlarvae sampled inside and outside potential convergences. Potential convergences varied in near‐surface hydrographic patterns, with most displaying consistency among two transects and diverse patterns in salinity and temperature (e.g., across‐convergence gradients with equal or different signs). While the highest postlarval abundances were found in convergences, abundance patterns on and off convergences were not consistent, and another analysis indicated higher abundance in convergences than in a 7‐year untargeted surface ocean data set. Experiments indicated no survivorship differences among convergence and non‐convergence individuals at two temperatures, while image analyses revealed differences in color and size. Physical measurements and qualitative neuston community analyses indicated substantial heterogeneity among potential convergences. Our results reinforce that small‐scale heterogeneities are highly variable but important to the ecology of meroplankton, including the pelagic and neustonic habitats where lobster postlarvae are abundant. The aim of the article is to determine the temporal boundaries within which one can shape the legal situation of others after one’s death. The starting point for these considerations is the case of Count Orgaz, who, in the 14th century, issued a perpetual disposition of benefits in favor of the Parish of St. Thomas in Toledo. The study examines the institution of condition, the ‘legatum per damnationem’, payments of benefits from family foundations, and ‘inter vivos’ contracts whose full effectiveness is linked to the death of the party. The research supports the conclusion that when planning for the future after one’s death, one can only make dispositions that are binding within a limited temporal scope. The legal system protects both the freedom to dispose of property in the event of death and the freedom of heirs to acquire and maintain property. An exceptional regulation provides the Act on Family Foundations dated January 26, 2023. It creates a basis for establishing a family foundation for the purpose of accumulating assets, managing them in the interest of beneficiaries, and providing benefits on their behalf. This research aims to analyze the different intervention strategies applied by the Mexican state in international trade during the pandemic to generate policy proposals that strengthen export and import activities in the post-pandemic transition. The methodology used was analytical and descriptive. The results show that the new National Customs Agency of Mexico and the designation of the armed forces in customs control have generated a better collection of taxes on foreign trade and an increase in exports of 2.1% in 2022 compared to 2021. During the year, 50% of adult Europeans suffering from acholia, as well as at least 90%, complain of headaches once in a lifetime without treatment. This disease has been identified by WHO as one of the 10 diseases leading to disability. With headaches, a high rate of disability is associated with several pathologies that are associated with suffocation in patients. We can bring to them ruxy disorders, neck pain, vestibular symptoms and imbalance, as well as cerebral pathologies in migraines. Having complete knowledge about the disease, knowledge of the mechanisms of formation of the pathological process provides the optimal treatment option. Roads are a vital infrastructure for land transportation and transportation routes. To maintain the road's serviceability at a prime level in serving traffic flow, it is necessary to evaluate the road pavement condition to determine whether it is still in good condition or requires routine or periodic maintenance programs. This research aims to assess and analyze the existing condition of district roads in Morotai Island Regency, evaluate and analyze the financing capacity for maintaining district roads in Morotai Island Regency, and analyze the budgetary needs for road maintenance in Morotai Island Regency. The existing road conditions were examined using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method, where hotmix roads with perfect conditions numbered 32 segments, very good conditions had 17 segments, good conditions had 9 segments, and fair conditions had 1 segment. Additionally, there were 6 segments without hotmix pavement. The budget allocated for the road program over the last 5 years averaged 42.74% annually from the total budget of the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency. For this purpose, the book, in this review, is being subjected to a multifaceted analysis taking into account several aspects such as the contents, subject order, the language, the style, the way the subject topics are discussed, the criticisms it received andthe sources it used. Emerging empirical evidence supports play's potential to stimulate and foster scientific creativity. Focusing on how play relates to scientific creativity in adulthood, this review synthesizes the current state of knowledge in four areas: the play element in scientific research, the playfulness of scientists, mechanisms through which play affects scientific creativity, and environmental factors key to the play‐to‐create process in scientists' work. The review highlights several limitations hindering further research development in this area. Specifically, existing studies: (a) are largely qualitative and focus on descriptive analysis of the forms and/or select aspects of play, (b) do not sufficiently consider the unique characteristics and processes of scientific research, and (c) decontextualize the creative process by separating the player‐creator from the environment. Building on this analysis, the author clarifies the conceptualization of play, playfulness, and scientific creativity, differentiates between creative and recreative play in relation to core scientific activities, and identifies useful conceptual and measurement tools to facilitate future domain‐specific empirical studies of play and scientific creativity. Collectively, these insights advance a new integrative theoretical framework—the play‐to‐create model—to encourage and guide systematic and contextualized investigations of how play, playfulness, creative processes, and the environment interact to generate creative scientific outcomes.
