Summary: The temperature effect during autohydrolysis of natural and blanched broccoli was studied. For this purpose, the extraction yield, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity and glucosinolates type and content of the autohydrolysis liquors have been determined. The development of alginate based hydrogels using the autohydrolysis liquid phase as solvent and the corresponding textural characterisation was also evaluated. In all cases, extraction yields rose with the autohydrolysis temperature up to 150 °C and then decreased. For liquors from natural samples, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity increased with increasing operation temperature. The opposite trend was identified for blanched samples. Comparable values were obtained at 150 °C for liquors from natural samples and those blanched treated at 100 °C. Glucosinolates content decreased with increasing temperature. Glucoiberin, glucoraphanin, gluconapin, glucobrassicin and gluconasturniin were detected. Hydrogels with suitable textural properties were formulated with the extracted liquors at 100 and 150 °C, independently of the blanching treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND The effective exploitation of plants as a biorenewable resource has very important significance for sustainable development. Broom ( Cytisus scoparius) has been used and associated with healthy benefits in the Iberian Peninsula for a long time. With this in mind, different technologies, alone or in combination, have been proposed to obtain valuable compounds from broom branches. RESULTS Composition showed a seasonal variation. Periods that lead to higher content of extractives were selected to design a combined autohydrolysis and supercritical CO2 extraction process for the production of antioxidants. The autohydrolysis process leads to higher yields than conventional solvent extraction and SC-CO2 extraction produced a raffinate with radical scavenging capacity comparable with ethanolic extracts. The major bioactive compounds identified in extracts were flavonoids, phenolic acids and phenolic aldehydes. CONCLUSIONS An extraction process resulting from a combination of solvent extraction and autohydrolysis increased the extraction yields and the recovery of extracts containing bioactive compounds suitable for use in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. The development of environmentally friendly processes with limited generation of polluting streams to attain sustainable utilization of raw materials is encouraged. The implementation of novel extraction technologies more efficient, selective and with lower energy consumption than conventional ones, can help in achieving this objective. Particularly promising are aqueous based methods, since water is a cheap, safe and abundant solvent and the limited use of toxic organic solvents is a consumer's, ecological and processing demand. The benefits and the limiting aspects of microwave assisted water extraction, either adding water as the only solvent or in solvent free processes, using the naturally present water in vegetal materials for the extraction of valuable components from renewable vegetal sources are highlighted and the potential of this technique for industrial applications is discussed. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aqueous fractionation of wood has been proposed as a suitable processing method for biorefineries. When treatments are performed under low severity conditions, water-soluble components (which could be detrimental in further processing stages) are removed, whereas polysaccharides, lignin, and other water-insoluble constituents remain in solid phase with little alteration. In order to explore the presence of added-value products in aqueous extracts from Pinus pinaster wood, different samples (heartwood and sapwood with and without knots) were extracted with water at 130 to 140 °C, and the resulting solutions were assayed for yield and composition (by GC-FID, GC-MS, and HPLC). The major extract components, such as polysaccharide-derived products, simple phenolics, stilbenes, lignans, flavonoids, organic acids, jubaviones, steryl esters, and triglycerides, were identified and quantified. In this study, hydroalcoholic leaf extracts of Couroupita guianensis were examined for antioxidant activity, phytochemical and total phenolic composition, stimulation of human skin fibroblast (HSF) proliferation and UV-absorption. The radical scavenging capacity, reducing power and protection against joint oxidation of linoleic acid and β-carotene bleaching oxidation in emulsion were used to evaluate the antioxidant activity. The results of this study strongly indicate in vitro antioxidant activity, which may be due to the presence of a high total phenolic content. In order to identify active principles, the extracts were submitted to fractionation and the compounds isolated were the flavonoids 2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-methoxy-3′,5′-dimethylchalcone (1), 7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-6,8-dimethylflavanone (2) and the phenolic acid 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (3). In addition, a high level of stimulation of HSF proliferation and significant absorption of UV radiation were also observed.
