Over three billion metric tons of cement are produced annually worldwide, making concrete the most extensively used construction material. Self-sensing, or smart, cement allows real-time monitoring of performance through the entire service life of a concrete structure, for the detection of changing stresses, contamination, excessive temperature, gas leaks and pre-seismic activity. This is achieved by adding a very small proportion of conductive or semi-conductive fibers, such as carbon fibers to the bulk cement, making it piezoresistive, and enabling changes in the concrete's electrical resistivity in response to shear stress and strain to be monitored.This state-of-the-art reference work presents experimental results with a realistic theoretical framework, for cement manufactures, concrete technologists and contractors as well as researchers.

With the rapid rise in our needs and requirements, the amount of waste generated by modern cities is also increasing at an unprecedented rate. This problem is global in nature and most countries around the world need appropriate waste management strategies. These measures include disposal and the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle). Each of these strategies has its own share of pros and cons. An increasing emphasis is being placed on the application of the 3Rs, especially from the environmental perspective. Construction & demolition (C & D) waste is generated when new infrastructure is built and/or older structures are demolished or renovated. Hundreds of millions of tons of such waste are generated worldwide annually, making it one of the most significant waste generating activities in the world. One way to take care of a significant fraction of this waste is as recycled aggregates (RA), wherein the waste is crushed to the dimensions of coarse and fine aggregates and is used for various activities, most notably in manufacturing of concrete. Other uses may include landfilling, manufacturing of tiles, bricks, pavement blocks, etc. Recently, other types of wastes such as used PET bottles have also been studied as a source of recycled aggregates. This book deals with the various socio-economic, technical, environmental, and policy issues related to the application of various types of recycled aggregates in different countries around the world. An interesting alternative is provided by alkali-activated geopolymer materials (AAGM). The monograph analyses the state of the art (problem) in using stone siftings and aspiration dust obtained in natural stone crushing for producing concrete aggregates and fillers for dry construction mixtures and mortars on their basis. The influence of disperse fraction in stone siftings and aspiration dust on structural, mechanical and rheological properties of cement composite construction materials is investigated. Hypothesis for obtaining technological conditions, providing positive effect of the disperse fraction on strength and other properties of cement based concrete and mortar is proposed.Experimental results on studying properties of dry mixtures and mortars on their basis using stone crushing aspiration dust as filler are presented. Efficiency of using fillers, based on igneous rocks, on adhesive and other properties of mortars is demonstrated. Methodology for design of mortars composition for given mortar properties in case, when aspiration dust is used as filler, is proposed. The monograph presents experimental results on fine-grained concrete including as a main filler stone siftings with up to 20% of disperse fraction. It is shown that it is possible to produce fine grain concrete class С20/25…С60/75. Technological parameters of vibro-pressed fine-grained concrete with raw stone siftings are developed. Methodologies for composition design of fine-grained concrete with given workability are proposed. Possibility for producing macroporous light-weight concrete for walls and filtration materials, based on stone siftings fillers is shown.

As a fundamental building material in modern times, concrete has been subject to continual development. It has evolved from a simple mixture of basic elements, i.e., hydraulic cement, water, and aggregates, to become a modern high-performance material — a material designed to respond to the environment and in some versions to preserve it. This book reflects the recent research developments in regards to concrete technology. As such, it focuses on the innovative high-performance concrete known as self-consolidating concrete (SCC). This kind of concrete has outstanding properties such that it can flow and become compact by its own weight without bleeding and with minimal reliance on energy. Originating in Japan in 1983 in response to a labor supply shortage in the construction industry, SCC requires less work to compact in the production process than conventional concrete does. That is, unlike conventional concrete, SCC can flow by its own weight and requires very little vibration to compact. This book is for readers who want to become well-versed in the most important current research in the field of novel SCC. The book will be useful for students, researchers, concrete scientists and technologists, and practicing engineers. This book consists of eight chapters. Each chapter is comprised of an introduction, a discussion of the concept of the design and the concrete's development, and the properties and testing of the concrete in fresh and hardened stages of SCC. Clearly, the properties of concrete, especially SCC, have shown remarkable improvement in recent years, and the movement toward more environmentally sound production practices is also encouraging. The opportunity to offer a detailed account of SCC in this light constitutes the author's principal reason for writing this book, which is itself the result of significant research. Despite his best efforts, though, it may be that the author's account includes some errors, for which he takes full responsibility. Due to a high demand in construction and furniture industries worldwide, natural resources such as stones and wood as non-renewable resources are being depleted. Thus, researchers are focusing on renewable resources as alternative materials. As such, the utilisation of abundant solid wastes and byproducts, which are discharged from agriculture, industry and municipalities present an alternative to the conventional materials for the construction and furniture industries. These solid wastes and byproducts, when properly processed have shown to be effective and can readily meet design specifications. Agricultural solid wastes from oil palm distributors such as Oil Palm Shell (OPS) and Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB), which are abundant in agro-based countries, present an interesting alternative to the conventional aggregate in lightweight concrete and artificial plank production, respectively. At present, palm oil producing countries are Barkina Faso, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Colombia, Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Liberia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Republic of Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Uganda, Venezuela and others. In Malaysia, oil palm plantations cover over 5 million hectares, and annual production of OPS as solid waste from 450 oil palm mills is more than 6 million tons. This large amount of OPS as a renewable green aggregate can contribute to overcoming the over dependence on depletable resources for concrete production. The civil engineering projects are of a larger scale; they need sustainable materials in order to gain a greater momentum of growth. The major technical characteristics of OPS solid waste must be primarily understood before each particular use. Therefore, there is a need to highlight the importance of OPS to be used in the construction industry.
