Abstract

This Perspective presents and discusses the most recent advancements in the field of exploitation of hybrid nanostructured composites consisting of semiconducting metal oxides and graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, graphene quantum dots, and carbon nanotubes) in specific fields of applications, namely, photovoltaics, water splitting, photocatalysis, and supercapacitors. These hybrid materials have received remarkable attention over the last decade thanks to claimed outstanding functional optoelectronic properties, especially as for (photogenerated) charge carriers storage and transport, allowing the promotion of useful reactions and enhancement of the efficiency of several processes based on charge exchange. In situ and ex situ synthetic strategies have been applied in order to optimize the contact between the two partners and efforts have as well been devoted to investigate the best amount of carbon material to insert in the semiconductor scaffold. We provide the reader with an overview of the research carried out in the last decade, together with a critical analysis of the claimed benefits provided by the carbon materials, also highlighting the current questions waiting for the scientific community to provide an answer to. Abstract

Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2 ) has emerged as a promising catalyst for hydrogen evolution applications. The synthesis method mainly employed is a conventional hydrothermal method. This method requires a longer time compared to other methods such as microwave synthesis methods. There is a lack of comparison of the two synthesis methods in terms of crystal morphology and its electrochemical activities. In this work, MoS2 nanosheets are synthesized using both hydrothermal (HT-MoS2 ) and advanced microwave methods (MW-MoS2 ), their crystal morphology, and catalytical efficiency towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) were compared. MoS2 nanosheet is obtained using microwave-assisted synthesis in a very short time (30 min) compared to the 24 h hydrothermal synthesis method. Both methods produce thin and aggregated nanosheets. However, the nanosheets synthesized by the microwave method have a less crumpled structure and smoother edges compared to the hydrothermal method. The as-prepared nanosheets are tested and used as a catalyst for hydrogen evolution results in nearly similar electrocatalytic performance. Experimental results showed that: HT-MoS2 displays a current density of 10 mA/cm2 at overpotential (−280 mV) compared to MW-MoS2 which requires −320 mV to produce a similar current density, suggesting that the HT-MoS2 more active towards hydrogen evolutions reaction.

Abstract

Electronic noses (ENs) have recently emerged as valuable candidates in various areas of food quality control and traceability, including microbial contamination diagnosis. In this paper, the EN technology for microbiological screening of food products is reviewed. Four paradigmatic and diverse case studies are presented: (a) Alicyclobacillus spp. spoilage of fruit juices, (b) early detection of microbial contamination in processed tomatoes, (c) screening of fungal and fumonisin contamination of maize grains, and (d) fungal contamination on green coffee beans. Despite many successful results, the high intrinsic variability of food samples together with persisting limits of the sensor technology still impairs ENs trustful applications at the industrial scale. Both advantages and drawbacks of sensor technology in food quality control are discussed. Finally, recent trends and future directions are illustrated.

Abstract

Real-time monitoring of dye loading (N3 and N719) under continuous flow conditions on TiO(2) photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells has been applied to quantitatively investigate dye uptake kinetics, demonstrating that static impregnation provides in all cases higher dye loading and, as a consequence, better working devices.

Abstract

La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O 3-? perovskite powder was prepared by a single-step process based on a microwave-assisted citrate gel route. The structure, morphology, as well as surface properties and thermal stability of the resulting material were deeply investigated by different techniques (XRD, SEM, XPS, BET and TGA). The powder resulted homogeneous with an excellent thermal stability. Preliminary catalytic tests revealed a promising activity in alcohol steam reforming. This simple, fast and general synthetic approach is expected to be valuable in order to open the path towards a scale up in the production of these materials.

Abstract

The article discusses a study that demonstrates how innovative nanonetwork composed of oxide nanoparticles and single-crystalline zinc oxide nanowires are an efficient photoanode in excitonic solar cells. Factors leading to improved light absorption, charge collection, and electron photogeneration are analyzed. It is found that different types of nanonetwork implemented in a dye-sensitized solar cell architecture demonstrated significant enhancement of efficiency with respect to a nanowire photoanode of the same girth.

Abstract

An innovative nanonetwork composed of TiO2 nanoparticles and single-crystalline ZnO nanowires is demonstrated as efficient photoanode in excitonic solar cells. Such architecture benefits of the capability of high sensitizer loading offered by the nanoparticles and of the direct conduction path for electrons guaranteed by the nanowires. The combination of these features leads to improved light absorption, electron photogeneration, and charge collection. The nanonetwork was implemented in a dye-sensitized solar-cell architecture demonstrating threefold enhancement of the efficiency with respect to a nanowire photoanode of the same thickness. Abstract

Layered multi-oxide concept was applied for fabrication of photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells based on ZnO and SnO2, capitalizing on the beneficial properties of each oxide. The effect of different combinations of ZnO@SnO2 layers was investigated, aimed at exploiting the high carrier mobility provided by the ZnO and the higher stability under UV irradiation pledged by SnO2. Bi-oxide photoanodes performed much better in terms of photoconversion efficiency (PCE) (4.96%) compared to bare SnO2 (1.20%) and ZnO (1.03%). Synergistic cooperation is effective for both open circuit voltage and photocurrent density: enhanced values were indeed recorded for the layered photoanode as compared with bare oxides (Voc enhanced from 0.39 V in case of bare SnO2 to 0.60 V and Jsc improved from 2.58 mA/cm2 pertaining to single ZnO to 14.8 mA/cm2). Improved functional performances of the layered network were ascribable to the optimization of both high chemical capacitance (provided by the SnO2) and low recombination resistance (guaranteed by ZnO) and inhibition of back electron transfer from the SnO2 conduction band to the oxidized species of the electrolyte.
