Fire events can modify the distribution and speciation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil, especially if they are associated to organic matter (OM). In fact, OM can undergo substantial structural modifications at high temperatures, up to the complete mineralization. The present study aims to investigate the changes of PTEs’ bioavailability to durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) plants after simulating fire events (up to 300 °C and 500 °C) in an agricultural soil polluted by Cr, Zn, Cu, and Pb. The PTEs’ uptake and allocation in plant tissues were assessed using the RHIZOtest system. After the fire simulations, no evident risk of accumulation and translocation in plants was observed for Zn, Pb, and Cu. Conversely, a high accumulation in roots and a significant translocation to shoots were observed for Cr, which reached concentrations of 829 mg kg−1 in roots and 52 mg kg−1 in shoots at 500 °C. Additional experimental evidence suggested that Cr was taken up by plants grown on heated soils as Cr(VI). Once acquired by roots, only a small part of Cr (up to 6%) was translocated to shoots where it was likely present as mobile forms, as evidenced by micro X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) analyses. Overall, the results obtained provide evidence that the high temperatures occurring during fire events can increase the mobility and bioavailability of certain PTEs transforming apparently safe environments into potentially dangerous sources of pollution. These processes can ultimately affect the human health through the food chain transfer of PTEs or their migration into surface water and groundwater.

The increased costumers' request of safe and high-quality food products makes food traceability a priority for frauds identification and quality certification. Elemental profiling is one of the strategies used for food traceability, and TXRF spectroscopy is widely used in food analysis even if its potentialities have not been fully investigated. In this work, a new method for food traceability using directly TXRF spectra coupled with multivariate analyses, was tested. Twenty-four different beans' genotypes (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown onto two different sites have been studied. After the development of the method for beans' analysis, TXRF spectra were collected and processed with PCA combined with SNV and GLSW filter obtaining a perfect clustering of the seeds according to their geographical origin. Finally, using PLS-DA, beans were correctly classified demonstrating that TXRF spectra can be successfully used as fingerprint for food/seed traceability and that elemental quantification procedure is not necessary to this aim.

Scanning electron microscopy coupled with microanalysis (SEM-EDX) is an important analytical tool for the morphological and chemical characterization of different types of materials. In many applications, SEM-EDX elemental maps are usually used and processed as images, thus flattening and reducing the spectroscopic information contained in EDX hyperspectral data cubes. The exploitation of the full hyperspectral dataset could be indeed very useful for the study of complex matrices like soil. In order to maximize the information attainable by SEM-EDX data cubes analysis, the software package “Datamuncher Gamma” was implemented and applied to study soil aggregates. By using this approach, different phases (silicates, aluminosilicates, Ca-carbonates, Ca-phosphates, organic matter, iron oxides) inside soil aggregates were successfully identified and segmented. The advantages of this method over the common ROI imaging approach are presented. Finally, this method was used to compare different aggregates in a Cr-polluted soil and understand their possible pedological history. The present method can be used for the analysis of every type of SEM-EDX data cubes, allowing its application to different types of samples and fields of study.

A combined approach based on multiple X-ray analytical techniques and conventional methods was adopted to investigate the distribution and speciation of Cr in a polluted agricultural soil, from the bulk-scale down to the (sub)micro-level. Soil samples were collected from two different points, together with a control sample taken from a nearby unpolluted site. The bulk characterization revealed that the polluted soils contained much higher concentrations of organic matter (OM) and potentially toxic elements (PTE) than the control. Chromium was the most abundant PTE (up to 5160 g kg−1), and was present only as Cr(III), as its oxidation to Cr(VI) was hindered by the high OM content. According to sequential extractions, Cr was mainly associated to the soil oxidisable fraction (74%) and to the residual fraction (25%). The amount of Cr potentially bioavailable for plant uptake (DTPA-extractable) was negligible. Characterization of soil thin sections by micro X-ray fluorescence (μXRF) and field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with microanalysis (FEGSEM-EDX) showed that Cr was mainly distributed in aggregates ranging from tens micrometres to few millimetres in size. These aggregates were coated with an aluminosilicate layer and contained, in the inner part, Cr, Ca, Zn, P, S and Fe. Hyperspectral elaboration of μXRF data revealed that polluted soils were characterised by an exogenous organic-rich fraction containing Cr (not present in the control), and an endogenous aluminosilicate fraction (present also in the control), coating the Cr-containing aggregates. Analyses by high-resolution micro X-ray computed tomography (μCT) revealed a different morphology of the soil aggregates in polluted soils compared with the control. The finding of microscopic leather residues, combined with the results of bulk- and micro-characterizations, suggested that Cr pollution was likely ascribable to soil amendment with tannery waste-derived matrices. However, over the years, a natural process of Cr stabilization occurred in the soil thus reducing the environmental risks.

Microgreens are an emerging class of vegetables, which have become increasingly important in the agri-food market in recent years, and contain a number of macro- and micro-nutrients. This paper presents a rapid method for the elemental analysis of microgreens based on total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectroscopy, without preliminary sample digestion. The following elements were detected and quantified simultaneously for six microgreen genotypes, belonging to Asteraceae and Brassicaceae: P, S, K, Ca, Cl, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr. The limit of detection (LOD) varied depending on the element and ranged between 0.1 mg kg−1 for Sr and 42 mg kg−1 for P. The method was validated using certified standards, and results compared with those obtained using a conventional ICP-AES method requiring sample digestion. The paper also presents the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques.

Soil degradation is one of the most topical environmental threats. A number of processes causing soil degradation, specifically erosion, compaction, salinization, pollution, and loss of both organic matter and soil biodiversity, are also strictly connected to agricultural activity and its intensification. The development and adoption of sustainable agronomic practices able to preserve and enhance the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils and improve agroecosystem functions is a challenge for both scientists and farmers. This Special Issue collects 12 original contributions addressing the state of the art of sustainable agriculture and soil conservation. The papers cover a wide range of topics, including organic agriculture, soil amendment and soil organic carbon (SOC) management, the impact of SOC on soil water repellency, the effects of soil tillage on the quantity of SOC associated with several fractions of soil particles and depth, and SOC prediction, using visible and near-infrared spectra and multivariate modeling. Moreover, the effects of some soil contaminants (e.g., crude oil, tungsten, copper, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are discussed or reviewed in light of the recent literature. The collection of the manuscripts presented in this Special Issue provides a relevant knowledge contribution for improving our understanding on sustainable agriculture and soil conservation, thus stimulating new views on this main topic.

Cover crops are increasingly adopted in viticulture to enhance soil quality and balance the vegetative and reproductive growth of vines. Nevertheless, this sustainable practice has been only recently used for table grape viticulture, with results often contrasting. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a fescue (Festucaarundinacea Schreb.) cover crop on soil quality, yield, and grape qualitative parameters in a table grape vineyard (cv &ldquo, Italia&rdquo, ) located in southern Italy, comparing results with the conventional tillage. Soil organic carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), microbial biomass C (MBC), &beta, glucosidase (BGLU) and alkaline phosphomonoesterase (APME) activities were assessed during three growing seasons (2012&ndash, 2014) and three phenological stages. The trend of soil chemical and microbiological properties was jointly influenced by the soil management system, growing season and phenological stage. Compared to conventional tillage, cover crops increased, on average, soil organic C, total N, MBC, BGLU and APME by 136%, 93%, 112%, 100% and 62%, respectively. Slight or no effects of cover crops were observed on grape quality and yield, except for 2012 (the driest season), when a yield reduction occurred. This study reveals that cover crops strongly enhance soil quality in the short-term, with potential advantages for grape production in the long-term.

Glass and aluminium packaging materials were recycled, in the perspective of circular economy, to synthetize potassium and sodium zeolitic materials (Zeo-K and Zeo-Na) through an alkaline hydrothermal treatment. Both materials were then tested as oenological adjuvants for the removal of riboflavin (300 μg L−1) from a model wine solution, to prevent the light-struck taste defect that can be caused in white and rose wines by light exposure during storage or consumption. Suspension tests revealed that Zeo-Na at 1 g L−1 removed 15 % riboflavin in 16 h, similarly to what removed by a commercial bentonite at the same concentration. To reduce the riboflavin concentration below the risk threshold, 50 g L−1 Zeo-Na were required. Effectiveness of Zeo-K was slightly lower compared to Zeo-Na, possibly due to the lower crystallinity, cation exchange capacity and porosity of this zeolitic material. A higher removal efficiency and time saving were obtained by filtration using columns packed with Zeo-Na. Weak bonding and physical entrapment are suggested as potential mechanisms for riboflavin sorption by zeolites.

Zinc (Zn) is a common heavy metal in polluted soils, as it is a widespread pollutant deriving both from natural sources and anthropogenic activities. The antioxidant tolerance/defence mechanisms against oxidative stress induced by subtoxic concentrations of Zn (50 and 150 μM ZnSO4) were studied in a widespread edible plant (lettuce; Lactuca sativa L.) and in an important model plant (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.). After 10 days (Arabidopsis) and 20 days (lettuce) of Zn exposure, Zn uptake/translocation was evaluated in both roots and shoots, while indicators of oxidative stress and stress intensity, total antioxidant capacity, and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidative defence were measured in leaves. From an overall comparison of the two species, Zn root uptake in Arabidopsis subjected to 50 and 150 μM ZnSO4 was approximately 3- and 5-fold lower than in lettuce, while Zn translocation from roots to apical leaves was more efficient in Arabidopsis (23.7 vs 21.3% at 50 μM ZnSO4 and 19.3 vs 12.9% at 150 μM ZnSO4). Generally, a higher degree of Zn-induced oxidative stress (863.8 vs 21.3 μg g−1 FW H2O2 and 1.33 vs 0.75 μM g−1 FW MDAeq at 150 μM ZnSO4) and antioxidant response (441.2 vs 258.5 mM g−1 FW TEAC and 91.0 vs 54.9% RSA at 150 μM ZnSO4) were found in lettuce. The aim of this study is understanding (a) if subtoxic Zn levels can affect Zn uptake and translocation in the studied species and (b) if this eventual Zn absorption can influence plant oxidative status/antioxidant response. Considering that soil contamination by Zn can affect crop production and quality, the results of this research could be important for environmental, nutritional and human health issues.

In the last years, uncontrolled fires are frequently occurring in forest and agricultural areas as an indirect effect of the rising aridity and global warming or caused by intentional illegal burnings. In addition, controlled burning is still largely used by farmers as an agricultural practice in many parts of the world. During fire events, soil can reach very high temperatures at the soil surface, causing dramatic changes of soil properties and elements biogeochemistry. Among soil elements, also potentially toxic elements (PTEs) can be affected by fires, becoming more or less mobile and bioavailable, depending on fire severity and soil characteristics. Such transformations could be particularly relevant in agricultural soils used for crop productions since fire events could modify PTEs speciation and uptake by plants and associated (micro)organisms thus endangering the whole food-chain. In this review, after describing the effects of fire on soil minerals and organic matter, the impact of fires on PTEs distribution and speciation in soils is presented, as well as their influence on soil microorganisms and plants uptake. The most common experimental methods used to simulate fires at the laboratory and field scale are briefly illustrated, and finally the impact that traditional and innovative agricultural practices can have on PTEs availability in burned agricultural soils is discussed in a future research perspective.

Assessment of soil quality under different management practices is crucial for sustainable agricultural production and natural resource use. In this study, different statistical methods (principal component analysis, PCA, stepwise discriminant analysis, SDA, partial least squares regression with VIP statistics, PLSR) were applied to identify the variables that most discriminated soil status under minimum tillage and no-tillage. Data collected in 2015 from a long-term field experiment on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) were used and twenty soil indicators (chemical, physical and biological) were quantified for the upper soil layer (0–0.20 m). The long-term iteration of different management strategies affected soil quality, showing greater bulk density, relative field capacity (RFC), organic and extractable carbon contents (TOC and TEC) and exchangeable potassium under no-tillage. PCA and SDA confirmed these results and underlined also the role of available phosphorous and organic carbon fractions as variables that most discriminated the treatments investigated. PLSR, including information on plant response (grain yield and protein content), selected, as the most important variables, plant nutrients, soil physical quality indicators, pH and exchangeable cations. The research showed the effectiveness of combining variable selection methods to summarize information deriving from multivariate datasets and improving the understanding of the system investigated. The statistical approaches compared provided different results in terms of variables selected and the ranking of the selected variables. The combined use of the three methods allowed the selection of a smaller number of variables (TOC, TEC, Olsen P, water extractable nitrogen, RFC, macroporosity, air capacity), which were able to provide a clear discrimination between the treatments compared, as shown by the PCA carried out on the reduced dataset. The presence of a response variable in PLSR considerably drove the feature selection process.

This study was carried out in two olive orchards (Olea europaea L., cv. Chemlali) located in a polluted area near a fertilizers factory and in a control unpolluted site, managed with similar cultivation techniques. The aim was to investigate the physiological and biochemical responses of polluted plants (PP), exposed to atmospheric metal contamination (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb) as compared to control plants (CP). Leaves, roots and fruits of PP showed a depression of their non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant defences and a disruption of their hormonal homeostasis. The anomalous physiological status of PP was also demonstrated by the lower values of pigments in leaves and fruits, as compared to CP. Atmospheric metals negatively affected olive oil chemical and sensory quality. However, despite metal deposition on fruit surfaces, the accumulation of potentially toxic metals in olive oil was negligible. Considering that olive oil is an important food product worldwide and that many productive olive orchards are exposed to several sources of pollution, this work could contribute to clarify the effects of atmospheric metal pollution on olive oil quality and its potential toxicity for humans.

Dicotyledons cope with ion (Fe) shortage by releasing low-molecular-weight organic compounds into the rhizosphere to mobilize Fe through reduction and complexation mechanisms. The effects induced by these root exudates on soil mineralogy and the connections between Fe mobilization and mineral weathering processes have not been completely clarified. In a batch experiment, we tested two different kinds of organic compounds commonly exuded by Fe-deficient plants, i.e., three organic acids (citrate, malate, and oxalate) and three flavonoids (rutin, quercetin, and genistein), alone or in combination, for their ability to mobilize Fe from a calcareous soil and modify its mineralogy. The effect of root exudates on soil mineralogy was assessed in vivo by cultivating Fe-deficient and Fe-sufficient cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.) in a RHIZOtest device. Mineralogical analyses were performed by X-ray powder diffraction. The batch experiment showed that citrate and, particularly, rutin (alone or combined with organic acids or genistein) promoted Fe mobilization from the soil. The combinations of rutin and organic acids modified the soil mineralogy by dissolving the amorphous fractions and promoting the formation of illite. These mineralogical alterations were significantly correlated with the amount of Fe mobilized from the soil. The RHIZOtest experiment revealed a drastic dissolution of amorphous components in the rhizosphere soil of Fe-deficient plants, possibly caused by the intense release of phenolics, amino acids, and organic acids, but without any formation of illite. Both batch and RHIZOtest experiments proved that exudates released by cucumber under Fe deficiency concurred to the rapid modification (on a day-scale) of the mineralogy of a calcareous soil.

Besides the variety of colours and flavours, microgreens show interesting nutritional properties, mainly regarding their contents of mineral nutrients and bioactive compounds. To date, the literature has prevalently focused on the individual nutritional features of microgreens usually belonging to Brassicaceae. The present study reports an articulated nutritional profile of six genotypes of microgreens, belonging to three species and two families: chicory (Cichorium intybus L., Puglia's local variety ‘Molfetta’, CM, and cultivar ‘Italico a costa rossa’, CR) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. Group crispa, cultivar ‘Bionda da taglio’, LB, and ‘Trocadero’, LT), from Asteraceae; and broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. Group italica Plenk, Puglia's local variety ‘Mugnuli’, BM, and cultivar ‘Natalino’, BN) from Brassicaceae. All the microgreens, except LB, can be considered good sources of Ca, whilst LT and CM also showed considerable amounts of K. As regards bioactive compounds, Brassica microgreens were the richest in phenolic antioxidants. The microgreens also presented higher amounts of α-tocopherol and carotenoids compared to mature vegetables. In particular, broccoli microgreens and LB showed the highest amounts of vitamin E, while Asteraceae microgreens presented the highest levels of carotenoids. Due to their delicate tissues, fresh cut microgreens showed a shelf life not exceeding ten days at 5 °C. The results obtained highlight the possibility to exploit genetic biodiversity in order to obtain tailored microgreens with the desired nutritional profiles, with particular regard to mineral nutrients and bioactive compounds. Appropriate pre- and post-harvest strategies should be developed, so as to allow microgreens to retain as long as possible their nutritional value.

A new screening strategy using Petri dishes with a gradient of distances between germinating seeds and a metal-contaminated medium was used for studying alterations in root architecture and morphology of Arabidopsis thaliana treated with cadmium, copper and zinc at sub-toxic concentrations. Metal concentrations in the dishes were determined by anodic stripping voltammetry on digested agar samples collected along the gradient, and kriging statistical interpolation method was performed. After two weeks, all agar dishes were scanned at high resolution and the root systems analyzed. In the presence of all the three metals, primary root length did not significantly change compared to controls, excepting for zinc applied alone (+45% of controls). In metal-treated seedlings, root system total length increased due to the higher number of lateral roots. The seedlings closer to the agar sectors including metals showed a marked curvature and a higher root branching in comparison to those further away from the metals. This behavior, together with an observed increase in root diameter in metal-treated seedlings could be interpreted as compensatory growth, and a thicker roots could act as a barrier to protect root from the metals. We therefore propose that the remodeling of the root architecture in response to metals could be a pollution ‘escaping strategy’ aimed at seeking metal-free patches.

Hexavalent chromium was stabilized in soil by using a mixture of glass and aluminum recovered from municipal solid wastes under alkaline hydrothermal conditions. Cr(VI) concentration was reduced by 94-98% already after 7days of treatment. After the same period, more than 90% of total Cr was stabilized in highly recalcitrant and scarcely mobile chemical forms, with 50% in the residual fraction (when the samples were treated at 1/10w/w mixture/soil ratio). Longer treatments increased Cr stabilization. X-ray microanalyses revealed that Cr was stabilized in geopolymeric structures within large aluminosilicate mineral aggregates (containing both amorphous and crystalline phases). 3D microstructural analyses showed a limited compaction of the soil with still a 20% internal porosity in the neoformed aggregates. Increased pH and salinity after the treatment can be restored by simple soil amendments and washing.

Compost has been recently suggested as an alternative to peat for the preparation of growing substrates in soilless cultivation systems. However, some physico-chemical properties of compost may reduce plant performance and endanger the quality of productions, in particular for possible heavy metal accumulation in edible parts. This study aims at evaluating the suitability of a municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) and a sewage sludge compost (SSC) as components of growing media for the soilless cultivation of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Heavy metal content of SSC complied with legislation limits but, in MSWC, it exceeded (Cu, Pb) or was very close (Cd, Zn) to safe limits. A greenhouse experiment was carried out by cultivating four lettuce cultivars ("Maximus," "Murai," "Patagonia," and "Aleppo") in pots containing a mixture of MSWC and perlite (MSWC + P), SSC and perlite (SSC + P), or peat and perlite (peat + P), the latter used as control. Plant biometric parameters measured after 72 days of growth revealed that the yield of plants cultivated on SSC + P was similar to control plants, independently of the cultivar. Conversely, MSWC + P suppressed in general the biomass production, especially for Murai and Patagonia cultivars. Compared to peat + P, both compost-based substrates reduced the leaf accumulation of heavy metals, with a major effect in Maximus plants. The levels of Cd and Pb in the edible part were always below the safe limits imposed by European regulation. Therefore, risks of heavy metal intake in food chain associated with the replacement of peat with compost in the growing media are negligible, even when a compost with a significant amount of heavy metals is used. Besides compost quality monitoring, also an appropriate varietal choice is crucial to obtain good yields and safe products.

This study aimed to investigate comparatively the main chemical and physico-chemical properties of the humic acid (HA) fraction of three different composts and to evaluate the bioactive effects of these HAs on the germination and early growth of four populations of switchgrass. Three compost HAs isolated from a green compost (HAGC), a mixed compost (HAMC), and a coffee compost (HACC) were characterized for some chemical and physico-chemical properties, such as ash content, elemental composition, total acidity, carboxylic and phenolic OH group contents, E4/E6 ratio, Fourier Transform infrared (FT IR), and fluorescence spectroscopies. In subsequent experiments conducted in vitro in a climatic chamber under controlled conditions, the bioactive effects of the three HAs at concentrations of 10, 50, and 200 mg L−1 were tested on the germination and early growth of four switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) populations, the octaploids Shelter, Shawnee and Dacotah, and the tetraploid Alamo. The ash content and the E4/E6 ratio were, respectively, much higher or slightly higher for HACC than for the other two HAs. HAMC showed the lowest C and H contents and the highest O content, whereas HAGC had the highest N content. The total acidity and phenolic OH group content followed the order: HAMC > HACC > HAGC. The fluorescence analysis of the three HAs evidenced a common fluorophore unit possibly associated to simple aromatic structures, such as phenolic-like, hydroxy-substituted benzoic and cinnamic acid derivatives. The FT IR spectra of all HA samples indicated the presence of aromatic phenolic structures. Significant beneficial effects were produced by any HA on switchgrass germination and early growth as a function of the population tested and the HA dose. Results of this study demonstrated that the addition of compost HAs to the germination medium of four switchgrass populations positively influenced the germination process and the growth of primary root and shoot. Significant correlations were found between HA bioactivity and some HA properties. These results suggest a possible use of compost as soil amendment in areas where switchgrass grows naturally or is cultivated.

This research was performed in order to assess the optimal harvesting time of four olive cultivars for continuous harvest, by following the seasonal changes of the most reliable ripening indices and by developing a model to find out the detachment index by the most quick colourimetric index. In the literature there are no works on these topics. A two-year field experiment was carried out in a super high-density olive orchard on Arbequina, Arbosana, Coratina and Urano® cultivars. Fruits firmness, detachment index, colourimetric index, pigmentation index, oil and polyphenol contents were compared and it used a model coming from a non-linear regressions to determine the detachment index by the colourimetric index. For all the cultivars the maximum oil content was observed in a more concentrated period with respect to the maximum mechanical efficiency, between the 60th and the 75th day after the start of the ripening process. Moreover the oil content maximum values occurred about 1 month after the maximum detachment indices. For Arbosana the relations between colourimetric and detachment index were not significant, both as a linear correlation and non-linear regression, because of the skin pigmentation occurred very slowly and never completely. So, it can be suggested to use the firmness or detachment index as reliable ripening indices for this cultivar. On the contrary, for the remaining cultivars colourimetric index could represent an useful ripening index. The sigmoid model could be reliable for the cultivars that veraison quickly, as Arbequina, Coratina and Urano® do. These first data collected on four cultivars could contribute to highlight their ripening processes and they could be useful for harvesting management in super high-density orchards. The ripening processes showed fundamental differences among the cultivars. Moreover, data obtained in this study are the first ones available in the literature for the new Italian cultivar Urano®. Our results emphasize the importance of setting a priority of criteria for choose the harvesting time for continuous harvest that will take into account first of all the maximum mechanical efficiency, so the maximum oil harvestable and then the maximum oil quality. The question on which better ripening index it could be used in order to detect the optimal harvesting time depend on the rapidity of the ripening process of a cultivar. The sigmoid model obtained is applicable only for Arbequina, Coratina and Urano®, for which it could represent a very reliable instrument to evaluate the optimal harvesting date.

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial element for plants as it increases their resistance to several biotic and abiotic stresses. In the rhizosphere, root exudates, especially when released by nutritionally stressed plants, promote the mineral weathering and, consequently, influence Si biogeochemistry. This study aims at evaluating the mineralogical alterations in the rhizosphere of Fe-deficient or Fe-sufficient barley plants grown either in a natural or in an artificial calcareous soil, focusing on the dynamics of both Fe and Si. After 6 d of soil–plant contact, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of rhizosphere soil samples of Fe-deficient plants revealed, for both natural and artificial soil, a decrease of amorphous phases and an increase of smectite compared to the unplanted soil. Root exudates released by Fe-deficient plants were most likely the main responsible for the weathering of the amorphous phases by a ligand controlled dissolution mechanism. When the soil–plant contact was prolonged up to 12 d, plants overcame Fe nutritional stress and their effect on soil mineralogy completely changed, as proved by the considerable increase of amorphous and decrease of smectite. Smectite decrease might evidence the effort of plant to mobilize Si and micronutrients other than Fe from the soil through the exudation of organic ligands. When the artificial soil was treated with Fe-sufficient barley plants, the mineral weathering trend appeared reversed compared to the experiments with Fe-deficient plants. Plant nutritional status regulates the root exudation pattern and, consequently, drives mineral weathering processes in the rhizosphere. Barley has shown to be able to mobilize Si from smectite, yet depending on its Fe supply and proving the strict connection between Si and Fe dynamics in the rhizosphere.

Sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum L.), an emerging halophyte species, represents a nutritious and refined food product. In this study, the effect on yield and quality of potted sea fennel grown on three posidonia (Podisonia oceanica (L.) Delile)-based composts (a municipal organic solid waste compost, a sewage sludge compost and a green compost) and a peat-based substrate was analyzed. Composts were used both pure and mixed with peat at a dose of 50% on a volume basis. We hypothesized that the halophytic nature of this plant might overcome the limitations of high-salinity compost-based growing media. The growth parameters, color traits and trace metals content (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) of the edible parts were compared. Independently of the substrates, the average total and edible yields were 51 and 30 g plant&minus, 1, respectively, while the average waste portion was about 41%. The use of posidonia-based compost did not affect the color traits of sea fennel plants as compared with samples grown on the commercial peat-based substrate. In general, potted sea fennel grown on both posidonia-based composts and commercial peat-based substrate appeared a good source of essential micronutrients. Only a weak reduction of Fe and Mn concentrations was observed in plants grown on posidonia-based composts, especially when used at the highest dose. Independently of the growing medium, the content of potentially hazardous trace elements (Cd and Pb) in the edible parts of sea fennel was always below the maximum admissible limits fixed by the European legislation. Results indicate that posidonia-based composts can be used as a sustainable peat substitute for the formulation of soilless mixtures to grow potted sea fennel plants, even up to a complete peat replacement.

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds that can be released by plant roots into the rhizosphere as a result of root turnover, root injury, root decomposition or through root exudation. In the rhizosphere, the released flavonoids can have multifunctional roles, such as protect plants against pests and diseases, regulate root growth and functions, influence nutrient cycles such as N cycle, interact with proteins and make protein N more resistant to microbial degradation, and induce allelopathic growth effects. Much less is known about their role in interacting with soil constituents and promoting the mobilization of mineral nutrients. In this research we studied the interactions of three flavonoids which can be actively released by plant roots (quercetin, rutin, and genistein) with two different agricultural soils, one acidic and one alkaline. In addition, synergistic and competitive effects with three organic acids usually found in root exudates (citric, oxalic, and malic acid) were assessed for the mobilization of Al, Si, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb by using different combinations of the above-cited compounds. Mobilization processes strongly depended on the soil type and the nature of the element which is being mobilized. More specifically, citrate out of the three organic acids was the most effective in acid soil while oxalate was able to extract more Cu, Zn and Ni in alkaline soil. Furthermore, in acid soil synergistic effect by organic acids was observed only for Mn. In alkaline soil it was noticed for Si, while for Al, Cu, Zn and Ni a competitive effect occurred. While organic acids may be mainly involved in complexation reactions promoting the desorption of elements from soil minerals, flavonoids appear to promote redox reactions which enhance significantly the solubilization of Fe and Mn. In particular, rutin was 25 times more effective than citrate for Fe mobilization in alkaline soil while quercetin was 50 times more efficient than citrate in extracting Mn from the acid soil. In addition, in combination with citrate, quercetin (at µM concentration) can increase as much as five times the amount of Mn which can be extracted by citrate alone. The mechanisms by which Fe and Mn are mobilized by flavonoids were also investigated. Differently from citrate, rutin mobilized Fe from the alkaline soil by reducing it to Fe(II) (reductive dissolution). As for Mn in the acid soil, two different mechanisms seems to be responsible of the marked solubilization of this element. When quercetin acted alone, only a reductive dissolution was observed, with the reduction of Mn to Mn(II). When quercetin was combined to citrate, beside the reductive dissolution to Mn(II), Mn was also partly reduced by quercetin to Mn(III) which, on its turn, was immediately complexed and stabilized by citrate. The formation of this complex could have contributed to the large Mn mobilization observed. At last, the effects of flavonoids and organic acids on soil mineralogy are also being evaluated by XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) with Rietveld method and SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled to Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy).

The rising presence of endocrine disruptors (EDs) in the environment, especially in aquatic systems, may endanger wildlife and humans. The removal of EDs from water by means of the new and sustainable technology of phytoremediation appears promising, although more information is required about the feasibility to apply this technique to real polluted media. In this study, radish was tested during germination for its ability to remove the EDs bisphenol A, linuron and 17α-ethinylestradiol from four different media: distilled water, natural organic matter (NOM)-enriched water and two freshwaters collected in Southern Italy. In water, seedlings were only slightly affected by the mixture of EDs, and they removed a great amount of each ED. In the other three media, although the germination was generally inhibited, the removal efficiency of radish for all EDs remained high. Results of this study reveal the phytoremediation capacity of laboratory-prepared and actual aquatic systems for various EDs by radish.
