Abstract: Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure. Abstract: Este projeto pretende servir de uma ferramenta, que possibilita as Forças e Serviços de Segurança (FSS) São-Tomense como parte integrante da Administração Pública (AP), acompanhar as reformas, reestruturações e inovações a partir de análise de uma proposta de modelo de gestão e a sua, eventual, aplicação á gestão das forças de defesa, proteção e segurança dos dirigentes do estado. As forças de defesa e serviços de segurança estando inseridas na AP, e submetidas constitucionalmente às determinações das políticas do governo é sem dúvida algumas instituições que ocupam um lugar particular, devido as suas missões e os valores nacionais que preservam. O Projeto tem por objetivo reorganizar e adaptar as unidades de segurança e de proteção dos órgãos de soberania, á atual realidade económica, social e política de São Tomé e Príncipe. Pretende-se através de Fatores de mudança organizacional elaborar uma proposta de modelo para a criação do Comando Autónomo de Defesa e Segurança do estado São-Tomense. A criação de um único órgão de segurança e proteção dos órgãos de soberania, permitirá criar uma estrutura mais forte e moderna, capaz de responder aos novos desafios em questões desegurança de pessoal e das instalações dos órgãos de soberania. Perceber quais são os principaisfatores de mudança organizacional que integram um modelo para a criação do Comando Autónomo de Defesa e Segurança do estado São-Tomense é o principal objetivo deste projeto. Neste contexto, torna-se necessário definir a sua estrutura e o âmbito das suas atribuições bem como a competência de cada serviço do Comando Autónomo de Defesa e Segurança do estado São-Tomense. O Comando Autónomo de Defesa e Segurança do estado São-Tomense, compreenderá Serviços, Destacamentos e Departamento Operacional de acordo com as suas especificidades. No que se refere aos serviços, além do gabinete de apoio, terá um conselho de deontologia na qual integra a secção de justiça e disciplina e, cada estrutura terá as suas competências definidas. This project aims to serve as a tool, which enables the Forces and Services and Security (FSS) São Tomense as an integral part of the Public Administration (PA), to monitor the reforms, restructuring sands and innovations from the analysis of a proposal of management model and its, eventual, application to the management of the defense, protection and security forces of the leaders of the state. The defense forces and security services being inserted in the PA, and constitutionally subject to the determinations of government policies is undoubtedly some institutions that occupy a particular place, due to their missions and the national values they preserve. The project aims to reorganize and adapt the security and protection units of the organs of sovereignty, to the current economic, social and political reality of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is intended through Organizational Change Factors to develop a model proposal for the creation of the Autonomous Command of Defense and Security of the State of São Tomé. The creation of a single security and protection body of the organs of sovereignty, will create a stronger and more modern structure, capable of responding to new challenges in matters of security of personnel and the installations of the organs of sovereignty. Realizing what are the main factors of organizational change that are part of a model for the creation of the Autonomous Command of Defense and Security of the state of São Tomense is the main objective of this project. In this context, it is necessary to define its structure and the scope of its tasks as well as the competence of each service of the Autonomous Command of Defense and Security of the State of São Tomense. The Autonomous Command of Defense and Security of the state Of São Tomense, will understand Services, Detachments and Operational Department according to its specificities. With regard to services, in addition to the support office, it will have a deontology board in which it integrates the justice and discipline section and each structure will have its powers defined.

Abstract: ResumoA vegetação de caatinga do nordeste brasileiro ocorre principalmente sobre dois tipos de substrato principais: sobre solos derivados do embasamento cristalino pré-cambriano e sobre a cobertura arenosa das bacias sedimentares. Evidências recentes têm demonstrado variações na dinâmica, estrutura e composição florística da caatinga desses dois macroambientes, o que fundamenta a necessidade de estudos com enfoque nas diferenças florísticas entre esses diferentes substratos. O presente estudo florístico das ecorregiões de caatinga, Depressão Sertaneja Meridional e Raso da Catarina, no município de Tucano, Bahia, é de especial interesse porque neste município ocorrem esses dois substratos em escala geográfica local, permitindo ampliar o conhecimento sobre a heterogeneidade do Domínio da Caatinga. Neste trabalho é apresentado um inventário florístico de 14 localidades nestas duas ecorregiões da Caatinga. Em conjunto, as caatingas amostradas apresentaram uma alta riqueza florística em comparação com outras áreas no nordeste do Brasil. Foram coletadas 450 espécies, 288 gêneros e 82 famílias. A maior riqueza em espécies foi das Leguminosae, seguida por Euphorbiaceae. Nas localidades sobre substrato derivado do embasamento cristalino ocorreram 226 espécies, enquanto nas de substrato arenoso ocorreram 284 espécies. A proporção de espécies em comum entre esses dois tipos de substrato foi de apenas 13%. Diferenças em composição florística reforçam a hipótese de duas biotas distintas associadas aos dois principais tipos de substrato, que compõem a vegetação da caatinga. AbstractThe caatinga vegetation of northeastern Brazil occurs mainly in Pre-Cambrian, crystalline-derived soils and also on sedimentary-basin-derived sandy soils. Recent evidence has shown variations in the dynamics, structure and floristic composition of the caatinga over these two different edaphic macro-environments, which justifies the need for studies focusing on different substrates. A floristic study of the caatinga ecoregions Depressão Sertaneja Meridionaland Raso da Catarina in the municipality of Tucano, Bahia, Brazil, is of special interest because both substrates occur in a local scale, allowing the opportunity to broaden our knowledge on ecological heterogeneity within the Caatinga biome. In the current study we carried out a floristic survey of 14 sites distributed throughout the ecoregions of caatinga in Tucano. We found high species diversity in the caatingas of Tucano when compared to other areas in northeastern Brazil. A total of 450 species, 288 genera, and 82 families were collected. The most species rich families are Leguminosae and Euphorbiaceae. There occur 226 species in the sites on crystalline basement, whereas 284 species were collected in the sandy areas. The ecoregions were only 13% similar in floristic composition. We found strong differences between the ecoregions with respect to floristic composition and predominant plant habit as proxy for phytophysiognomy. Overall, our results reinforce the hypothesis of two distinct biotas that assembly the caatinga dry woodlands.

Abstract: [Aims]: Climate and human impacts are changing the nitrogen (N) inputs and losses in terrestrial ecosystems. However, it is largely unknown how these two major drivers of global change will simultaneously influence the N cycle in drylands, the largest terrestrial biome on the planet. We conducted a global observational study to evaluate how aridity and human impacts, together with biotic and abiotic factors, affect key soil variables of the N cycle., [Location]: Two hundred and twenty-four dryland sites from all continents except Antarctica widely differing in their environmental conditions and human influence., [Methods]: Using a standardized field survey, we measured aridity, human impacts (i.e. proxies of land uses and air pollution), key biophysical variables (i.e. soil pH and texture and total plant cover) and six important variables related to N cycling in soils: total N, organic N, ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic:inorganic N and N mineralization rates. We used structural equation modelling to assess the direct and indirect effects of aridity, human impacts and key biophysical variables on the N cycle., [Results]: Human impacts increased the concentration of total N, while aridity reduced it. The effects of aridity and human impacts on the N cycle were spatially disconnected, which may favour scarcity of N in the most arid areas and promote its accumulation in the least arid areas., [Main conclusions]: We found that increasing aridity and anthropogenic pressure are spatially disconnected in drylands. This implies that while places with low aridity and high human impact accumulate N, most arid sites with the lowest human impacts lose N. Our analyses also provide evidence that both increasing aridity and human impacts may enhance the relative dominance of inorganic N in dryland soils, having a negative impact on key functions and services provided by these ecosystems.

46. Biomassa combustível em campo sujo no entorno do Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brasil

Abstract: A Chapada Diamantina é uma região montanhosa de interesse especial para conservação, pois possui elevada biodiversidade e é sujeita a incêndios frequentes, cujos efeitos ainda não estão bem avaliados. O presente estudo objetivou quantificar a biomassa vegetal aérea em campo sujo, dois anos após um incêndio, e avaliar se esse período permite acúmulo suficiente de biomassa para a queima dessa vegetação, e em caso positivo, estimar a proporção de biomassa consumida pelo fogo. Visou também caracterizar a composição de famílias de plantas vasculares e a distribuição vertical do combustível. O campo sujo situa-se na Área de Proteção Ambiental Marimbus-Iraquara, circundante ao Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina, representando um encrave de fitofisionomias de cerrado sensu lato dentro do bioma Caatinga. A amostragem no campo sujo foi estratificada em áreas de campo sem arbustos e árvores (C), em manchas de arbustos e arvoretas (AA) e em áreas sem arbustos e árvores, mas com subarbustos (S), utilizando-se 20 parcelas de 1m x 1m, nas quais foram determinadas as porcentagens de cobertura e alturas das morfoespécies, discernidas em famílias de plantas. A biomassa vegetal aérea foi coletada em 10 parcelas, separando-se entre fina (até 0,3cm de diâmetro) e grossa (mais de 0,3cm de diâmetro). Após isso, foram realizadas duas queimadas experimentais, coletando-se a biomassa aérea restante nas outras 10 parcelas. Análises de variância foram utilizadas para as comparações. A biomassa em C foi 491,6g m-2, em S 530g m-2 e em AA 1.395,3g m-2. A biomassa fina é contínua e essencialmente constituída de plantas da família Poaceae, sendo em grande parte consumida pelas queimadas (95 a 97%), enquanto que a maior parte do combustível grosso não foi consumida, constituído principalmente de plantas da família Fabaceae nas manchas de arbustos e arvoretas, mais altas e heterogêneas. A alta inflamabilidade do campo sujo estudado e a curta distância deste ao Parque Nacional Chapada Diamantina demonstram a necessidade da inclusão das áreas campestres circundantes nas ações de combate e prevenção de incêndios nessa região.
