Abstract: International audience, The CONNECT European project that started in February 2009 aims at dropping the interoperability barrier faced by today's distributed systems. It does so by adopting a revolutionary approach to the seamless networking of digital systems, that is, synthesizing on the fly the connectors via which networked systems communicate. CONNECT investigates formal foundations for connectors together with associated automated support for learning, reasoning about and adapting the interaction behavior of networked systems.

Abstract: The task of WP6 is to evaluate the CONNECT technologies under realistic situations. To achieve this goal, WP6 concentrated its 3rd year effort on the development of a main scenario in the context of GMES, which requires the connection of highly heterogeneous and independently built systems provided by the industry partners. The resulting scenario allows the consortium to assess the validity of CONNECT claims and to investigate the exploitation of CONNECT technologies in the context of the integration of real systems. Another objective of this report is to provide a first assessment of CONNECT solutions against the project's objectives stated in the DoW. The proposed assessment spans: (i) the project's overall objective of enabling on-the-fly interoperability among heterogeneous networked systems as well as (ii) the project's specific objectives related to the foundations and associated enablers to be elaborated for learning and reasoning about the interaction behaviours of networked systems and for synthesizing mediators so as to make systems interoperate.

Abstract: Interoperability remains a fundamental challenge when connecting heterogeneous systems which encounter and spontaneously communicate with one another in pervasive computing environments. This challenge is exasperated by the highly heterogeneous technologies employed by each of the interacting parties, i.e., in terms of hardware, operating system, middleware protocols, and application protocols. The key aim of the CONNECT project is to drop this heterogeneity barrier and achieve universal interoperability. Here we report on the revised CONNECT architecture, highlighting the integration of the work carried out to integrate the CONNECT enablers developed by the different partners; in particular, we present the progress of this work towards a finalised concrete architecture. In the third year this architecture has been enhanced to: i) produce concrete CONNECTors, ii) match networked systems based upon their goals and intent, and iii) use learning technologies to find the affordance of a system. We also report on the application of the CONNECT approach to streaming based systems, further considering exploitation of CONNECT in the mobile environment.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an asymptotically rigorous one-dimensional analytical formulation capable of accurately capturing the stress and strain distributions that develop within the evolving neck of bars and sheets of rate-dependent materials stretched in tension. The work is an extension of an earlier study by the authors on necking instabilities in rate-independent materials. The one-dimensional model accounts for the gradients of the stress and strain that develop as the necking instability grows. Material strain-rate dependence has a significant influence on the strain that can be imposed on a bar or sheet before necking becomes pronounced. The formulation in this paper enables a quantitative assessment of the interplay in necking retardation due to rate-dependence and that due to the development of hydrostatic tension in the neck. The connection with a much simpler long-wavelength approximation which does not account for curvature induced hydrostatic tension in the neck is also emphasized and extended.

Abstract: International audience; Sustainability has emerged as a concern of central relevance. As a wicked problem, it poses challenges to business-as-usual in many areas, including that of modeling. This article addresses a question at the intersection of model-driven engineering and sustainability research: "How can we better support sustainability by bringing together model-driven engineering, data, visualization and self-adaptive systems, to facilitate engagement, exploration, and understanding of the effects that individual and organizational choices have on sustainability?" We explore this question via an idealized vision of an evaluation environment that facilitates integration and mapping of models from multiple diverse sources, visual exploration, and evaluation of what-if scenarios, for stakeholders with divergent perspectives. The article identifies research challenges to be addressed to enable decision making to support sustainability and provides a map of sustainability modeling issues across disciplines.

Abstract: International audience; We present spectral methods of moments for learning sequential models from a single trajec-tory, in stark contrast with the classical literature that assumes the availability of multiple i.i.d. trajectories. Our approach leverages an efficient SVD-based learning algorithm for weighted au-tomata and provides the first rigorous analysis for learning many important models using dependent data. We state and analyze the algorithm under three increasingly difficult scenarios: proba-bilistic automata, stochastic weighted automata, and reactive predictive state representations controlled by a finite-state policy. Our proofs include novel tools for studying mixing properties of stochastic weighted automata.

Abstract: Aspect-oriented software development techniques provide a means to modularize crosscutting concerns in software systems. A survey of industrial projects reveals the benefits and potential pitfalls of aspectoriented technologies.The past decade has seen the increased use of aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) technique as a means to modularize crosscutting concerns in software systems, thereby improving a development organization's working practices and return on investment (ROI). Numerous industrial-strength aspect-oriented (AO) programming frameworks exist, including AspectJ, JBoss, and Spring, as do various aspect-oriented analysis and design techniques.The software systems using AOSD that we have studied are medium to large-scale and span a wide range of domains including enterprise systems, e-health, e-transport, telecommunications, Web based information systems, multimedia applications, and workflow systems. Our analysis highlights typical usage patterns of AO techniques-for instance, they are mainly used for modularizing well-known crosscutting problems and incrementally introduced, addressing developmental concerns and other noncore product features first.

Abstract: International audience; Although model-driven engineering (MDE) is now an established approach for developing complex software systems, it has not been universally adopted by the software industry. In order to better understand the reasons for this, as well as to identify future opportunities for MDE, we carried out a week-long design thinking experiment with 15 MDE experts. Participants were facilitated to identify the biggest problems with current MDE technologies, to identify grand challenges for society in the near future, and to identify ways that MDE could help to address these challenges. The outcome is a reflection of the current strengths of MDE, an outlook of the most pressing challenges for society at large over the next three decades, and an analysis of key future MDE research opportunities.

Abstract: In this work, we have investigated by DSC the structural relaxation of amorphous polymethyl(α-n-alkyl)acrylates in which it is possible to change the length of the alkyl chain. We have evaluated the Narayanaswamy parameter, x, which controls the relative contribution of temperature and of structure to the relaxation time, the apparent activation energy, Δh * , and the nonexponentiality parameter, β, of the stretched exponential response function. The results suggest that x increases while Δh * decreases and β remains constant as the length of the side chain increases. This allows us to comment on the effect of chemical modification on the relaxation kinetics.

Abstract: International audience; Modern software systems are often required to adapt their behavior at runtime in order to maintain or enhance their utility in dynamic environments. Models at runtime research aims to provide suitable abstractions, techniques, and tools to manage the complexity of adapting software systems at runtime. In this chapter, we discuss challenges associated with developing mechanisms that leverage models at runtime to support runtime software adaptation. Specifically, we discuss challenges associated with developing effective mechanisms for supervising running systems, reasoning about and planning adaptations, maintaining consistency among multiple runtime models, and maintaining fidelity of runtime models with respect to the running system and its environment. We discuss related problems and state-of-the-art mechanisms, and identify open research challenges.

Abstract: The core objective of WP6 is to evaluate the CONNECT technologies under realistic situations. To achieve this goal, WP6 concentrated a significant amount of its 4th year effort on the finalization of the implementation of the GMES scenario defined during the 3rd year. The GMES scenario allows the consortium to assess the validity of CONNECT claims and to investigate the exploitation of CONNECT technologies to deal with the integration of real systems. In particular, GMES requires the connection of highly heterogeneous and independently built systems provided by the industry partners. WP6 contributed also in providing mobile collaborative applications and case studies showing the exploitation of CONNECTORs on mobile devices.

Abstract: Interoperability remains a fundamental challenge when connecting heterogeneous systems which encounter and spontaneously communicate with one another in pervasive computing environments. This challenge is exasperated by the highly heterogeneous technologies employed by each of the interacting parties, i.e., in terms of hardware, operating system, middleware protocols, and application protocols. The key aim of the CONNECT project is to drop this heterogeneity barrier and achieve universal interoperability. Here we report on the revised CONNECT architecture, highlighting the integration of the work carried out to integrate the CONNECT enablers developed by the different partners; in particular, we present the progress of this work towards a finalised concrete architecture. In the third year this architecture has been enhanced to: i) produce concrete CONNECTors, ii) match networked systems based upon their goals and intent, and iii) use learning technologies to find the affordance of a system. We also report on the application of the CONNECT approach to streaming based systems, further considering exploitation of CONNECT in the mobile environment.

Abstract: International audience; Models at runtime can be defined as abstract representations of a system, including its structure and behaviour, which exist in tandem with the given system during the actual execution time of that system. Furthermore, these models should be causally connected to the system being modelled, offering a reflective capability. Significant advances have been made in recent years in applying this concept, most notably in adaptive systems. In this paper we argue that a similar approach can also be used to support the dynamic generation of software artefacts at execution time. An important area where this is relevant is the generation of software mediators to tackle the crucial problem of interoperability in distributed systems. We refer to this approach as emergent middleware, representing a fundamentally new approach to resolving interoperability problems in the complex distributed systems of today. In this context, the runtime models are used to capture meta-information about the underlying networked systems that need to interoperate, including their interfaces and additional knowledge about their associated behaviour. This is supplemented by ontological information to enable semantic reasoning. This paper focuses on this novel use of models at runtime, examining in detail the nature of such runtime models coupled with consideration of the supportive algorithms and tools that extract this knowledge and use it to synthesise the appropriate emergent middleware.

Abstract: International audience; The behaviour of self adaptive systems can be emergent. The difficulty in predicting the system's behaviour means that there is scope for the system to surprise its customers and its developers. Because its behaviour is emergent, a self-adaptive system needs to garner confidence in its customers and it needs to resolve any surprise on the part of the developer during testing and mainteinance. We believe that these two functions can only be achieved if a self-adaptive system is also capable of self-explanation. We argue a self-adaptive system's behaviour needs to be explained in terms of satisfaction of its requirements. Since self-adaptive system requirements may themselves be emergent, a means needs to be found to explain the current behaviour of the system and the reasons that brought that behaviour about. We propose the use of goal-based models during runtime to offer self-explanation of how a system is meeting its requirements, and why the means of meeting these were chosen. We discuss the results of early experiments in self-explanation, and set out future work.

In order to discuss contemporary software engineering challenges on exception handling, the WEH workshop is strongly focused on discussions, interleaved with short presentations and discussion groups.

Abstract: International audience; User Generated Content (UGC), such as YouTube videos, accounts for a substantial fraction of the Internet traffic. To optimize their performance, UGC services usually rely on both proactive and reactive approaches that exploit spatial and temporal locality in access patterns. Alternative types of locality are also relevant and hardly ever considered together. In this paper, we show on a large (more than 650,000 videos) YouTube dataset that content locality (induced by the related videos feature) and geographic locality, are in fact correlated. More specifically, we show how the geographic view distribution of a video can be inferred to a large extent from that of its related videos. We leverage these findings to propose a UGC storage system that proactively places videos close to the expected requests. Compared to a caching-based solution, our system decreases by 16% the number of requests served from a different country than that of the requesting user, and even in this case, the distance between the user and the server is 29% shorter on average.

Abstract: The task of WP6 is to evaluate the CONNECT technologies under realistic situations. To achieve this goal, WP6 concentrated its 3rd year effort on the development of a main scenario in the context of GMES, which requires the connection of highly heterogeneous and independently built systems provided by the industry partners. The resulting scenario allows the consortium to assess the validity of CONNECT claims and to investigate the exploitation of CONNECT technologies in the context of the integration of real systems. Another objective of this report is to provide a first assessment of CONNECT solutions against the project's objectives stated in the DoW. The proposed assessment spans: (i) the project's overall objective of enabling on-the-fly interoperability among heterogeneous networked systems as well as (ii) the project's specific objectives related to the foundations and associated enablers to be elaborated for learning and reasoning about the interaction behaviours of networked systems and for synthesizing mediators so as to make systems interoperate.

Abstract: Service Discovery Protocols (SDPs) provide mechanisms that allow networked devices and applications to advertise and locate services with minimum or no human intervention. For fixed networked devices, SDPs such as SLP, Bonjour, and UPnP have been proposed. For more dynamic networked environments such as ad hoc, sensor, and wireless networks, a set of discovery technologies have been designed to operate optimally in such conditions; these include protocols like Ariadne, Allia, GSD, and UDDI. Hence, it is possible to advertise and discover services in diverse network types using one of a suite of technologies. Importantly, there are differences between individual protocols in terms of: (i) service description language, (ii) message format, (iii) directory architecture, (iv) discovery protocol behavior, (v) network communication, and (vi) nonfunctional features. These differences mean it is not possible to discover services with one protocol that is advertised by another and vice versa; we characterize this as service discovery protocol heterogeneity . In this article, we propose SeDiM, a dynamic middleware solution to allow heterogeneous discovery protocols within and across different domains to interoperate with one another. SeDiM is evaluated within a case study that demonstrates transparent interoperation of protocols including SLP and Bonjour in highly heterogeneous environments.

Abstract: Part 3: Architecture and Performance; International audience; The increasing complexity of distributed systems, where het- erogeneous systems are composed to form systems of systems, pose new development challenges. How can core middleware services, e.g. event communication, resource discovery, etc. be deployed and optimised in an end-to-end manner? Further, how can important properties such as inter- operability be managed? In this paper we propose OverStar a framework that generates overlay network based solutions from high-level specifica- tions in order to answer these questions. A middleware service is specified as a self-managing overlay network across heterogeneous systems; timed automata specify how the topology of the network is constructed and the data is exchanged. The key contribution is the open access to individual overlay nodes in order to specify additional flow logic, e.g. the transla- tion of messages to support end-to-end interoperability or the filtering of heterogeneous messages to optimise event dissemination. We evaluate OverStar using service discovery and event communication case studies; these demonstrate the ability to compose heterogeneous systems, achieve end-to-end interoperability and simplify the developer's task. Further, a performance evaluation highlights optimisations that can be achieved.

Abstract: International audience; Most existing virtual network (VN) provisioning approaches assume a single administrative domain and therefore, VN deployments are limited to the geographic footprint of the substrate provider. To enable wide-area VN provisioning, network virtualization architectures need to address the intricacies of inter-domain aspects, i.e., how to provision VNs with limited control and knowledge of any aspect of the physical infrastructure. To this end, we present a framework for large-scale VN provisioning. We decompose VN provisioning into three steps to overcome the implications of limited information on resource discovery and allocation. We present a new resource selection algorithm with simultaneous node and link mapping to assign resources within each domain. We use a signaling protocol that integrates resource reservations for virtual link setup with Quality-of-Service guarantees. Our experimental results show that small VNs can be provisioned within a few seconds.

Abstract: Part 8: Run-Time (Re)configuration and Inspection; International audience; Interoperability is a fundamental problem in distributed systems, and an increasingly difficult problem given the level of heterogeneity and dynamism exhibited by contemporary systems. While progress has been made, we argue that complexity is now at a level such that existing approaches are inadequate and that a major re-think is required to identify principles and associated techniques to achieve this central property of distributed systems. In this paper, we postulate that emergent middleware is the right way forward; emergent middleware is a dynamically generated distributed system infrastructure for the current operating environment and context. In particular, we focus on the key role of ontologies in supporting this process and in providing underlying meaning and associated reasoning capabilities to allow the right run-time choices to be made. The paper presents the CONNECT middleware architecture as an example of emergent middleware and highlights the role of ontologies as a cross-cutting concern throughout this architecture. Two experiments are described as initial evidence of the potential role of ontologies in middleware. Important remaining challenges are also documented.

To realise these decentralised social networks, gossip protocols appear as a natural solution, as they intrinsically tend to be highly resilient, efficient, and scalable. Existing gossip-based social networks have however so far been limited to simple use-cases, that typically take a uniform view of users, peers, and the data they hold. To progress to full-fledged decentralised social networks, we posit in this paper that we now need to move to gossip-based social applications that can simultaneously cater for different types of data and services. To help in this task, this paper sketches the main ingredients of a new programming language, Constellation, that seeks to simplify the realisation and experimentation with modular social gossip-based applications.

Abstract: At the interface between distributed computing and software engineering, we present three contributions that seek to help developers build better large-scale distributed computer systems. More precisely, we look a some key research problems related to software reuse in three representative instances of large-scale networked systems: peer-to-peer overlays, gossip-based protocols, and grid middleware. The work we present touches on three different, but interrelated, aspects of these systems: modular fault-tolerance (in peer-peer overlays), component-based development and programmability (in gossip-based protocols), and interactive performance analysis (in grid middleware). The message emerging from our contributions is twofold: first we demonstrate in concrete terms that today's large-scale distributed systems can greatly benefit from reusable software abstractions. Second, we also illustrate the inherent tension between high-reuse approaches and software complexity, and suggest possible avenues of improvement. Our work on gossip-based systems shows for instance how components can benefit from being combined to a more imperative programming paradigm. Similarly our study of a typical grid middleware exemplifies the difficulties introduced by high levels of reuse in modern distributed platforms, and how these difficulties can be mitigated by combining architectural reverse engineering with dynamic performance analysis.; À l'interface entre informatique distribuée et en génie logiciel, nous présentons trois contributions liées aux problématiques de réutilisation du logiciel dans trois cas représentatifs de systèmes distribués grande échelle: les réseaux logiques pair-à-pair, les protocoles épidémiques, et les intergiciels de grille. Abstract: ISBN: 9780521767224; Software product lines provide a systematic means of managing variability in a suite of products. They have many benefits but there are three major barriers that can prevent them from reaching their full potential. First, there is the challenge of scale: a large number of variants may exist in a product line context and the number of interrelationships and dependencies can rise exponentially. Second, variations tend to be systemic by nature in that they affect the whole architecture of the software product line. Third, software product lines often serve different business contexts, each with its own intricacies and complexities. The AMPLE (http://www.ample-project.net/) approach tackles these three challenges by combining advances in aspect-oriented software development and model-driven engineering. The full suite of methods and tools that constitute this approach are discussed in detail in this edited volume and illustrated using three real-world industrial case studies.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a platform for virtual network (VN) provisioning across multiple domains. The platform decomposes VN provisioning into multiple steps to address the implications of limited information disclosure on resource discovery and allocation. A new VN embedding algorithm with simultaneous node and link mapping allows to assign resources within each domain. For inter-domain virtual link setup, we design and realize a signaling protocol that also integrates resource reservations for providing virtual links with Quality-of-Service guarantees. Experimental results show that small VNs can be provisioned within a few seconds.

Abstract: International audience; Advances in the middleware paradigm has enabled applications to be integrated together thus enabling more reliable distributed systems. Although every middleware tries to solve interoperability issues among a given set of applications, nonetheless there still remains interoperability challenges across various middlewares. Interoperability enables diverse systems to work in accordance and extend the scope of services that are provided by individual systems. During an interoperability process, it is imperative to interpret the information exchanged in a correct and accurate manner in order to maintain coherence of data. Hence, the aim of this paper is to tackle this issue of semantic interoperability through an experimental approach using the domain of vehicular ad-hoc networked systems.

Abstract: The task of WP6 is to evaluate the CONNECT technologies under realistic situations. To achieve this goal, WP6 concentrated its effort in the development of a main scenario in the context of the GMES, which required the connection of two very different and independently build systems provided by the industry partners. The first one is a video-surveillance system provided by Thales; the second one, is an implementation of the GSMA Rich Communication Suite provided by DOCOMO. The resulting scenario allows to verify the validity of some of the CONNECT claims and to investigate with the introduction of some of the CONNECT technologies in the context of the integration of real systems. In addition, WP6 started the work of evaluating how the overall CONNECT work cycle can be introduced in the context of industrial prototype development.

Abstract: Interoperability remains a fundamental challenge when connecting heterogeneous systems which encounter and spontaneously communicate with one another in pervasive computing environments. This challenge is exasperated by the highly heterogeneous technologies employed by each of the interacting parties, i.e., in terms of hardware, operating system, middleware protocols, and application protocols. The key aim of the CONNECT project is to drop this heterogeneity barrier and achieve universal interoperability. Here we report on the activities of WP1 into developing the CONNECT architecture that will underpin this solution. In this respect, we present the following key contributions from the second year. Firstly, the intermediary CONNECT architecture that presents a more concrete view of the technologies and principles employed to enable interoperability between heterogeneous networked systems. Secondly, the design and implementation of the discovery enabler with emphasis on the approaches taken to match compatible networked systems. Thirdly, the realisation of CONNECTors that can be deployed in the environment; we provide domain specific language solutions to generate and translate between middleware protocols. Fourthly, we highlight the role of ontologies within CONNECT and demonstrate how ontologies crosscut all functionality within the CONNECT architecture.

Abstract: International audience; Distributed systems are becoming more complex in terms of both the level of heterogeneity encountered coupled with a high level of dynamism of such systems. Taken together, this makes it very difficult to achieve the crucial property of interoperability that is enabling two arbitrary systems to work together relying only on their declared service specification. This chapter examines this issue of interoperability in considerable detail, looking initially at the problem space, and in particular the key barriers to interoperability, and then moving on to the solution space, focusing on research in the middleware and semantic interoperability communities. We argue that existing approaches are simply unable to meet the demands of the complex distributed systems of today and that the lack of integration between the work on middleware and semantic interoperability is a clear impediment to progress in this area. We outline a roadmap towards meeting the challenges of interoperability including the need for integration across these two communities, resulting in middleware solutions that are intrinsically based on semantic meaning. We also advocate a dynamic approach to interoperability based on the concept of emergent middleware.

In this chapter, we introduce the Connect architecture, which puts forward a fundamentally different method to tackle the interoperability problem. The philosophy is to observe networked systems in action, learn their behaviour and then dynamically generate mediator software which will connect two heterogeneous systems. We present a high-level overview of how Connect operates in practice and subsequently provide a simple example to illustrate the architecture in action.

Abstract: Part 7: Security and Interoperability; International audience; Interoperability remains a significant challenge in today's distributed systems; it is necessary to quickly compose and connect (often at runtime) previously developed and deployed systems in order to build more complex systems of systems. However, such systems are characterized by heterogeneity at both the application and middleware-level, where application differences are seen in terms of incompatible interface signatures and data content, and at the middleware level in terms of heterogeneous communication protocols. Consider a Flickr client implemented upon the XML-RPC protocol being composed with Picasa's Service; here, the Flickr and Picasa APIs differ significantly, and the underlying communication protocols are different. A number of ad-hoc solutions exist to resolve differences at either distinct level, e.g., data translation technologies, service choreography tools, or protocol bridges; however, we argue that middleware solutions to interoperability should support developers in addressing these challenges using a unified framework. For this purpose we present the Starlink framework, which allows an interoperability solution to be specified using domain specific languages that are then used to generate the necessary executable software to enable runtime interoperability. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Starlink using an application case-study and show that it successfully resolves combined application and middleware heterogeneity.

Abstract: International audience; Geometric morphometrics involves defining landmark points to generate a discrete representation of an object. This crucial step is strongly influenced by the biological question guiding the analysis, and even more when using curve and surface semi-landmarks methods, because these require to generate a template of reference. We exemplify these constraints using two datasets from projects with very different backgrounds. The Theropod Dataset is a functional morphometric analysis of different extinct and extant theropod pelves. The Shrew Dataset is a populational morphometric analysis of the white-toothed shrew with very small variations in skull shape. We propose a novel procedure to generate a regular template configuration, using polygonal modelling tools. This method allows us to control the template geometry and adapt its complexity to the morphological variation in the sample. More studies are necessary to assess the morphometric and statistical importance of template design in curve and surface analyses.

Abstract: This is the first deliverable of WP5, which covers Conceptual Models for Assessment & Assurance of Dependability, Security and Privacy in the Eternal CONNECTed World. As described in the project DOW, in this document we cover the following topics: • Metrics definition • Identification of limitations of current V&V approaches and exploration of extensions/refinements/ new developments • Identification of security, privacy and trust models WP5 focus is on dependability concerning the peculiar aspects of the project, i.e., the threats deriving from on-the-fly synthesis of CONNECTors. We explore appropriate means for assessing/guaranteeing that the CONNECTed System yields acceptable levels for non-functional properties, such as reliability (e.g., the CONNECTor will ensure continued communication without interruption), security and privacy (e.g., the transactions do not disclose confidential data), trust (e.g., Networked Systems are put in communication only with parties they trust). After defining a conceptual framework for metrics definition, we present the approaches to dependability in CONNECT, which cover: i) Model-based V&V, ii) Security enforcement and iii) Trust management. The approaches are centered around monitoring, to allow for on-line analysis. Monitoring is performed alongside the functionalities of the CONNECTed System and is used to detect conditions that are deemed relevant by its clients (i.e., the other CONNECT Enablers). A unified lifecycle encompassing dependability analysis, security enforcement and trust management is outlined, spanning over discovery time, synthesis time and execution time.

Abstract: The CONNECT Integrated Project aims at enabling continuous composition of networked systems to respond to the evolution of functionalities provided to and required from the networked environment. CONNECT aims at dropping the interoperability barrier by adopting a revolutionary approach to the seamless networking of digital systems, that is, synthesizing on-the-fly the connectors via which networked systems communicate. The resulting emergent connectors are effectively synthesized according to the behavioral semantics of application- down to middleware-layer protocols run by the interacting parties. The role of work package WP3 is to devise automated and compositional approaches to connector synthesis, which can be performed at run-time. Given the respective interaction behavior of networked systems, we want to synthesize the behavior of the connector(s) needed for them to interact. These connectors serve as mediators of the networked systems' interaction at both application and middleware layers. In this deliverable, we set the scene for a formal theory of the automated synthesis of application- and middleware-layer protocol mediators. We formally characterize mediating connectors between mismatching application-layer protocols by rigorously defining the necessary conditions that must hold for protocols to be mediated. The outcome of this formalization is the definition of two relationships between heterogenous protocols: matching and mapping. The former is concerned with checking whether a mediator letting two protocols interoperate exists or not. The latter concerns the algorithm that should be executed to synthesize the required mediator. Furthermore, we analyze the different dimensions of interoperability at the middleware layer and exploit this analysis to formalize existing solutions to middleware-layer interoperability. Since the work on application-layer mediator synthesis is based on the assumption that a model of the interaction protocol for a networked system is dynamically discovered, we finally present an approach, based on data-flow analysis and testing, for the automated elicitation of application-layer protocols from software implementations. This approach presents similarities, but also several differences, with the work of work package WP4 (protocol learning). Furthermore, it allowed us to proceed in parallel with the work of WP4 and to state the requirements that the learning approaches have to satisfy to enable mediator synthesis. For this reason, we keep this work separate from the work on protocol learning and discuss it in this deliverable. All the approaches mentioned above are applied to several examples and scenarios.

Abstract: Systems-of-systems are formed through integration of individual complex systems, often not designed to work together. A number of factors can make this integration very challenging which often leads to catastrophic failures. In this paper, we focus on three major classes of system-of-system integration problems: managerial independence, interface incompatibility, and component-system complexity. We then present an aspect-oriented requirements description language (RDL) which uses natural language analysis capabilities to reason about dependencies across the documentation of the constituent systems of a system-of-systems. The aspect-oriented compositions in the RDL also facilitate specification of cross-document constraints and inconsistency resolution strategies, which can be used for deriving proof obligations and test cases for verification and validation of the emergent behaviour of a system-of-systems. We showcase the capabilities of our RDL through a case study of a real-world emergency response system. Our analysis shows that the querying and composition capabilities of the RDL provide valuable support for reasoning across documentation of multiple systems and specifying suitable integration constraints.

Abstract: International audience; Interoperability remains a fundamental challenge when connecting heterogeneous systems which encounter and spontaneously communicate with one another in pervasive computing environments. This challenge is exasperated by the highly heterogeneous technologies employed by each of the interacting parties, i.e., in terms of hardware, operating system, middleware protocols, and application protocols. This paper introduces Connect, a software framework which aims to resolve this interoperability challenge in a fundamentally different way. Connect dynamically discovers information about the running systems, uses learning to build a richer view of a system's behaviour and then uses synthesis techniques to generate a connector to achieve interoperability between heterogeneous systems. Here, we introduce the key elements of Connect and describe its application to a distributed marketplace application involving heterogeneous technologies.
