The problem of structuring a concurrent engineering team was studied. This research considered various mathematical clustering approaches to group product development design tasks together, and then constructed cross-functional teams based on the task clusters formed from each approach. Resultant team structures were evaluated against each other, and against a traditional discipline-centered hierarchical structure. The goal of this effort was to develop a structuring methodology for concurrent engineering teams that would allow projects to be completed faster, and with a lower risk of project failure. Team structures were developed using alternative clustering techniques and different combinations of data as inputs into the clustering techniques. Clustering approaches included single linkage, complete linkage, average linkage, the centroid method, and Ward's method. Data sources were from the initial stages of product development, and included task risk levels, task precedence relationships, disciplines required, personnel available, task technical importance, task difficulty, task priority, component requirement interactions, and projected communication levels between design tasks. Additional analysis was done on the effects of multiteam assignments for critical personnel. Team structures developed using the average linkage clustering approach and a data set composed of projected communication levels between tasks and discipline requirements for each design task were found to support the development of shorter duration projects with lower risk levels. Ward's method was also found to be effective in developing team structures when a clustering of approximately equal numbers of design tasks was a desirable outcome. Allowing for the movement of critical team personnel between task clusters further refined the team structuring methodology. A concurrent program specifies two or more processes that cooperate in […], Concurrent programming is conceptually harder to undertake and to understand than sequential programming, because a programmer has to manage the coexistence and coordination of multiple concurrent activities. To alleviate this task several high-level approaches to concurrent programming have been developed. For some high-level programming approaches, prototyping for facilitating early evaluation of new ideas is a central goal. Prototyping is used to explore the essential features of a proposed system through practical experimentation before its actual implementation to make the correct design choices early in the process of software development. Approaches to prototyping concurrent applications with very high-level programming systems intend to alleviate the development in different ways. Early experimentation with alternate design choices or problem decompositions for concurrent applications is suggested to make concurrent programming easier. This paper presents a survey of programming languages and systems for prototyping concurrent applications to review the state of the art in this area. FALCON is a programming environment for the development of high-performance scientific programs. It combines static and dynamic inference methods to translate MATLAB programs into Fortran 90. The static inference is supported with advanced value propagation techniques and symbolic algorithms for subscript analysis. Experiments show that FALCON's MATLAB translator can generate code that performs more than 1000 times faster than the interpreted version of MATLAB and substantially faster than commercially available MATLAB compilers on one processor of an SGI Power Challenge. Furthermore, in most cases we have tested, the compiler-generated code is as fast as corresponding hand-written programs.
