3. Monitoring My Dehydration: A Non-Invasive Dehydration Alert System Using Electrodermal Activity

Abstract

Staying hydrated and drinking fluids is extremely crucial to stay healthy and maintaining even basic bodily functions. Studies have shown that dehydration leads to loss of productivity, cognitive impairment and mood in both men and women. However, there are no such an existing tool that can monitor dehydration continuously and provide alert to users before it affects on their health. In this paper, we propose to utilize wearable Electrodermal Activity (EDA) sensors in conjunction with signal processing and machine learning techniques to develop first time ever a dehydration self-monitoring tool, \emph{Monitoring My Dehydration} (MMD), that can instantly detect the hydration level of human skin. Moreover, we develop an Android application over Bluetooth to connect with wearable EDA sensor integrated wristband to track hydration levels of the users real-time and instantly alert to the users when the hydration level goes beyond the danger level. To validate our developed tool's performance, we recruit 5 users, carefully designed the water intake routines to annotate the dehydration ground truth and trained state-of-art machine learning models to predict instant hydration level i.e., well-hydrated, hydrated, dehydrated and very dehydrated. Our system provides an accuracy of 84.5% in estimating dehydration level with an sensitivity of 87.5% and a specificity of 90.3% which provides us confidence of moving forward with our method for larger longitudinal study.

5. Type and Frequency of Misdiagnosis and Time Lag to Diagnosis in Patients with Chronic Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia.

Abstract

Purpose: Since ptosis is an early feature of chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO), patients are commonly misdiagnosed with other causes of ptosis. This study aims to report the type and frequency of misdiagnosis and time lag to diagnosis and the palpebral fissure transfer (PFT) procedure in patients with CPEO. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with CPEO who underwent PFT between 2006 and 2017. The data on previous diagnoses and treatments, age at definitive diagnosis of CPEO, and clinical manifestations were recorded. While the diagnosis of CPEO was based on clinical examination, 75% (24/32) of patients had undergone a confirmatory muscle biopsy and genetic tests. Results: There were 32 patients (19 females) with a mean age of 24.8 years (range, 13--36) at the final diagnosis and 34.1 years (range, 15-56) at the time of PFT. Also, 78% (25/32) of patients had been initially misdiagnosed with congenital ptosis (60%; 15/25) and ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) (40%; 10/25). The majority of patients (20/32) had one to three previous eyelid surgical procedures, of which 90% (18/20) were performed before the definitive diagnosis of CPEO. The mean time lag from the first surgical procedure to CPEO diagnosis and PFT was 6.2 and 14.7 years, respectively. Conclusion: In a referral center, 78% of the patients with CPEO were initially misdiagnosed with congenital ptosis and OMG, and 56% of them underwent ptosis repair before the diagnosis. While the onset of the disease was in the first or second decades of life, diagnosis was delayed up to a mean age of 25 years. Abstract

There are two main techniques of lower blepharoplasty: transcutaneous and transconjunctival approaches. Most patients seeking lower eyelid rejuvenation have concomitant involutional changes in the lower eyelid and midface, which would better be addressed concurrently with the lower blepharoplasty procedure to yield better aesthetic and functional outcomes. This study aims to review common aging-related changes in the lower eyelid as well as important preoperative considerations, surgical techniques, and various modifications of lower blepharoplasty. A literature search was performed in the PubMed database of English-language journals without restriction on the publication date using selected keywords. The relevant articles were selected by reviewing the titles and abstracts. The lower eyelid and midface should be perceived as a continuum. Currently the fat preservation approach is the mainstream in lower blepharoplasty to prevent postoperative skeletonization of the eye. Fat transposition, via either pedicled fat flaps or free fat grafts, is used to efface tear trough deformity and the eyelid-cheek junction as a primary aim inaesthetic lower eyelid surgeries. Abstract

Culling of dairy cattle for non-production causes and on-farm mortality have adverse consequences for farm profitability and animal welfare. Farmers face increasing pressures to improve farm profit and to answer concerns from the public and consumers about the welfare of their animals and ethics of their management systems. Farmers in New Zealand need new information to both develop control programs to reduce losses that arise from non-production culling and mortality, and to promote and defend their farming system. Our main aims were to define the current and past trends in the incidence of culling and mortality in New Zealand dairy cows, and investigate their associated risk factors. Our secondary aims were to review the incidence of culling and mortality in dairy cattle in other modern dairy industries against which the findings from New Zealand studies could be compared, to evaluate any limitations for analysis of electronic database records of culling and mortality of New Zealand cows, and, to estimate the financial consequences for herd owners of reduced incidence of non-production culling and mortality. We found no trend over the last two decades in the incidence of culling of dairy cows, either internationally or nationally, whereas, over the same period, the incidence of mortality in cows has increased internationally, but not in New Zealand. Additionally, we identified several disorders especially common in the period immediately following calving associated with increased rates of culling and mortality; that electronic database records of cows that had been culled or died were suitable for analysis when they came from a large population, but could be biased from individual herds; and that farm profits were increased when the incidence of culling and mortality was reduced.
