Alpha-oxoketenes have interesting structural features, synthetic utility and high reactivity. 6-oxocyclohexa-2,4-dienylideneketene was generated by laser flash photolysis and observed in solution. Its reactivity with H(sub2)0, MeOH and Et(sub2)NH with relative reactivities of 1.0, 2.0 and 73, was measured. The hydration is thought to occur by in-plane attack of the H(sub2)0 molecule on the ketenyl carbonyl via a pseudopericyclic transition state.

Complexation of an arene by an electron-deficient transition metal center has been much researched over the past 30 years. Anisoles were complexed by pentaammineosmium(II) and the result 5,6-eta2-anisole compounds were treated with activated olefins or acetals, forming 4H-anisolium compounds. They were able to undergo inter or intramolecular nucleophilic addition reactions, and 2-methoxy-1,3-cyclohexadiene complexes were formed. These can be readily converted into functionalized cyclohexenones, cyclohexadienes, and cyclohexenes.

Two separate absorption spectra of hexaamminechromium (III) ion, Cr{NH3}6 (super 3+), are observed in the visible range, corresponding to the transitions between the ground state and the excited state and the vibrionic features in the emission and absorption spectra indicate solvent sensitivity. The differences in ground and excited states of transition metal complexes, especially chromium(III) systems has attracted much attention, due to the fact that the photosubstitutional quantum yields are obtained in good yields.
