1. Air-photonics terahertz platform with versatile micro-controller based interface and data acquisition

Abstract

We present a recently developed terahertz platform. An air plasma produced by an ultrashort two-color laser pulse serves as a broadband terahertz source, with electric field that has peak amplitude in the MV/cm range. Air biased coherent detection of the terahertz field is employed where a peak detector associated with a micro-controller board acquires the signal coming from an avalanche photodiode. The temporal and spectral profiles of the produced terahertz electric field are presented, in excellent agreement with numerical simulations of the whole setup. We illustrate the capabilities of this platform by performing spectroscopy on water vapor and of a polystyrene reference sample., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

In this article we present the first measurement of the electric dipole susceptibility of one excess electron Na[sub n]F[sub n - 1] clusters. The static electronic polarizability and the permanent electric dipole of these clusters have been calculated with a one-electron model. Experimental values for the susceptibility are clearly related to the calculated values of the permanent dipole. The size evolution of the dipole moments is interpreted in terms of the interplay between the lattice and electron properties. This study outlines that the response of the cluster to the electric field cannot be fully understood with only equilibrium structure calculations and that the coupling between the permanent dipole and the vibrational motion of the cluster has to be taken into account. 25. In trap fragmentation and optical characterization of rotaxanes

Abstract

The first experiments on trapped rotaxanes are presented, combining collision induced fragmentation and in-trap laser spectroscopy. The intrinsic optical properties of three rotaxanes and their non-interlocked building blocks (thread and macrocycle) isolated in a quadrupolar ion trap are investigated. The excitation and relaxation processes under thermal activation as well as under photo-activation are addressed. The light and collision induced fragmentation pathways show that the degradation mechanisms occurring in the rotaxane are highly dependent on the nature of the thread. In the prospective of operating photoswitchable molecules, photo-activation is achieved in a controlled way by depositing photo-energy in the desired sub-unit of a mechanically interlocked structure.

26. Mid-IR spectra of different conformers of phenylalanine in the gas phase

Abstract

The experimental mid- and far-IR spectra of six conformers of phenylalanine in the gas phase are presented. The experimental spectra are compared to spectra calculated at the B3LYP and at the MP2 level. The differences between B3LYP and MP2 IR spectra are found to be small. The agreement between experiment and theory is generally found to be very good, however strong discrepancies exist when -NH2 out-of-plane vibrations are involved. The relative energies of the minima as well as of some transition states connecting the minima are explored at the CCSD(T) level. Most transition states are found to be less than 2000 cm(-1) above the lowest energy structure. A simple model to describe the observed conformer abundances based on quasi-equilibria near the barriers is presented and it appears to describe the experimental observation reasonably well. In addition, the vibrations of one of the conformers are investigated using the correlation-corrected vibrational self-consistent field method.

International audience; We present the gas phase measurement of the static electric dipole polarizability of C70 fullerenes. The value is 102±14 Å3. The increase in polarizability from C60 to C70 is discussed and compared to different theoretical predictions.
