ICHSS is an international seminar that is held every two years organized by the Research and Community Service Institute of the State University of Malang. The meeting aims to discuss the theoretical and practical developments of Social Sciences and Humanities in Indonesia and other countries with a view to build academic networks by gathering academics from various research institutes and universities.Community empowerment serves as a trigger to increase community independence and to cope with the challenges resulting from the rapid development of technology. An important aspect of the community empowerment effort is to link the results of innovation research for the benefit of community. The results of research should not only be limited to publications in the academic environment. Open Access to various forms of the existing literature is one of the requirements for innovative research to develop optimally. Therefore, this seminar has also served as a place for field researchers from various geographical areas to socialize, to discuss and to find solutions to current issues in the field of social sciences and humanities, as well as to build cooperation and synergy in creating ideas for mutual collaboration and to create joint research.

Disasters impose enormous misery on children, the most vulnerable members of the community. Records show that two million children have died as a direct consequence of armed conflict over the past decade. Globally, millions more have suffered death, disease, and dislocation as a result of such natural disasters as earthquakes, droughts, and floods. And even when emergency relief is available, permanent human damage remains; all too often, families fall apart, women are assaulted and degraded, and children are left to take care of themselves.In November 2008, the Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters at the University of Massachusetts Boston, USA, hosted an international conference to examine how to reconstruct sustainable communities that would be safe and secure for children and their families after disasters. This volume collects some of the papers that were presented at the conference. It is remarkable for the sheer assortment of topics covered. These include the role of gender equality in alleviating poverty and assisting children, their families and their communities after disasters; war and child soldiers; lessons from Hurricane Katrina and the Tsunami; the nature of psychosocial resilience and its significance for managing mass emergencies, disasters and terrorism; and, the promotion of human dignity in the creation of sustainable environments that empower families in the aftermath of disasters.

Highlights the necessity of activation and building local resources needed for recovery and development at the level of individuals, social systems and structures, social networks, civil society and at the level of the community in general.

Les diverses pratiques innovatrices d'altermondialisation, d'économie sociale et de coopération internationale décrites prouvent qu'une autre forme de mondialisation est possible. Pour en témoigner, des acteurs dans les organisations de coopération internationale et dans les mouvements sociaux livrent leurs expériences et leurs savoirs, et des chercheurs soulèvent les difficultés qui se font jour et mettent en lumière les débats de l'heure.

The results are presented of a Commission of the World Leisure and Recreation Association (WLRA) to examine the role of leisure and education for leisure activities among people with special needs living in the community, requiring social or health services outside hospital. A conceptual and practical framework for understanding the process of leisure education is provided and its role for community development and populations with special needs discussed. A total of 17 chapters serve as a foundation for developing models and programmes for leisure education within community settings and will be of interest to those working and researching in the area of education, leisure studies and community development.

This publication is an outcome of the International Workshop on Social Funds, held in May 27-30, 1997, in Washington D.C. The workshop's objectives are: 1) to assess a decade's implementation experience of social funds and their impact on poverty reduction; 2) to establish a broad consensus on their main achievements, weaknesses, and risks; 3) to generate a set of recommendations for improving existing operations as well as for the design of future social funds; and 4) to facilitate the integration of international and regional networks of social funds. On the basis of the results of the discussions, the following are the main achievements and weaknesses encountered by social funds over their first ten years of implementation (1986-1996): a) national poverty reduction strategies; b) effectively reaching the poor; c) social participation and partnerships in development; and d) sustainable approaches for service delivery. The international development agencies and the Nongovernmental organizations at the workshop committed themselves to more integrated and coordinated support to social funds. They were also committed to the promotion of a more systematic use of the Internet-based tools to maintain the global dimension of information exchange and to promote further collaboration. The publication of these workshop proceedings is a contribution to this broad international effort.

This collection examines the conflicts and realities of development at a local, empirical level. It provides a series of case studies which illuminate the attitudes and actions of all of those involved in local development schemes. The material is drawn from Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. All the contributors use rigorous anthropological methods of analysis to shed light on the place of feelings of personal sentiment and identity in reactions to planned development schemes. In a world where direct action and public protest are routine responses to local development schemes, they show how protesters, developers and politicians often hold very different fundamental views about the environment, society, government and development which go beyond partisan economic and political interests.
